2011 NFL Draft Needs: New York Jets
For the second in time in as many years, the New York Jets fell one game shy of the Super Bowl. Starting with being featured on the HBO Series and Hard Knocks and ending with an AFC Championship loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers, it was a roller coaster season for Rex Ryan's club.
On the offensive side of the ball, Mark Sanchez and company had an up and down season. Sanchez looked clueless at times and brilliant in other games. Ladainian Tomlinson looked like the L.T. of old during the early part of the season, but struggled to sustain his production throughout the season. The wide receiver position was one of strength for the Jets once Santonio Holmes returned from his suspension.
However, Holmes is now a free agent along with New York's other talented wideout, Braylon Ewards. It is unlikely that the Jets will be able to resign both. In addition to retaining offensive weapons, the continued development of Mark Sanchez will determine the fate of New York's offense in 2011.
Defensively the Jets were once again near the top of the league in all major statistical categories. Despite their recent success, New York's defense has some issues to address. The biggest question surrounding Rex Ryan's stop unit is whether or not free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie will be resigned.
Even with the services of Cromartie and Revis, the Jets had trouble closing out games defensively. New York's defense allowing Ben Roethlisberger to seal the deal was representative of their entire season. In addition to replacing or resigning Cromartie, the Jets have a 34 year old free agent on the defensive line in Shaun Ellis. Meanwhile, Rex Ryan is still in need of a pass rushing linebacker for his 3-4 defense.
Last offseason, The Jets made a big splash by signing a handful of high priced free agents and trading for Santonio Holmes and Antonio Cromartie. In 2011, the Jets are trying to hold their roster together while filling holes with young players in the 2011 NFL Draft.
3-4 Rush Linebacker - The Jets have come within a game of the Super Bowl for two straight seasons, and if they expect to get over the hump, New York has to continue to add talented pass rushers for Rex Ryan's 3-4 defense. Jason Taylor will likely move on from the Jets, which leaves the team with Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas at the OLB positions. An athletic prospect like Justin Houston would add some depth to this front seven.
3-4 Defensive End - As mentioned above, Shaun Ellis is 34 years old and a free agent this offseason. While he has been dominant for New York, they have to consider drafting his eventual replacement. Whether or not the Jets spend a first round selection on the position will depend on whether they are able to resign Sedrick Ellis.
Wide Receiver - The New York Jets are going to have a hard time resigning both Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes. The departure of either one would leave a vacancy to be filled. The 2011 NFL Draft class is deep in the middle rounds at wide receiver, so the Jets will not have an issue finding a replacement for either Holmes or Edwards.
Cornerback - If the Jets let Antonio Cromartie test the open market a replacement will be needed. Last year's first round pick, Kyle Wilson, is not ready to step into a starting role. Either through free agency or the draft, New York will address the secondary depth this offseason.

A good pass rushing OLB would do wonders for them.
RELEASE THE KRAKEN! (Greg Hardy)
"I'm going to kill you" - Greg Hardy
His name is SHAUN Ellis.
Ellis was not dominant. He was solid. In fact, other than Ngata, dominant 3-4 DEs do not exist. The Jets will be getting back Pitoitua and Jenkins from injury. Both are as good, if not better than Ellis at stopping the run; and I have a feeling that Ellis’ dominating (sarcasm) 4.5 sacks will not be terribly missed. In fact, NT is an actual need that should be addressed in the draft this season. Jenkins is plus 30 and on two surgically repaired wheels, and Pouha is actually older. The Jets should be laser-focused on snatching up Phil Taylor and/or Kenrick Ellis if the opportunity presents itself.
An OLB would be great, but its such a boom/bust proposition at pick 30. I do think, though, the position has to be addressed at some point during the draft.
WR should also be addressed at some point, but not necessarily at pick 30 if a guy named Baldwin isn’t there.
Although Wilson may not have been ready last year, I’d be fine with him this year. The Jets had the best pass defense in the league 2 yrs ago with Lito Shepphard opposite Revis. Wilson has plenty of talent and a red shirt season. He should be fine.
I would add RB as a possible need to replace Tomlinson should he be cut (and he should be) to clear cap space.
My appologies on that slip up
As far as Ellis, he played a huge role in their playoff victory against the New England Patriots. A dominant 3-4 end is not measured by sacks. Ellis was disruptive all season for the Jets but whether he can continue that going forward is a big question.

good post crack
I agree about going after the best D lineman in the 1st round.
OLB is too risky a pick. outside of clay matthews can u name a successful OLB drafted in the 1st 2 rounds the last 3 years?
I’m hopeful about Wilson, but wouldn’t mind drafting one in the middle rounds in any case.
I also don’t think we need to draft WR or RB this year. The FO is clearly showing they will re-sign edwards and holmes. It’s also being reported that LT will return for another year (still one of the best at picking up the blitz & catching out of the back field) and I expect McKnight to show a little more and become part of a 3-headed attack.
A good analysis of the major needs
I’ll give Ellis a little more credit than above for a good career.
The big question is whether the Jets continue to try to make the big splashes, unloading draft picks and ignoring depth players in the process, or if they learn patience and build a deeper team from the ground up.
jets definitely need to have a solid draft this year.
I’d agree they don’t need to draft any pro-bowlers, but need to draft 2-3 solid defensive starters.
they take a qb in the second
cb in the first

I Love this game. When you think of the perfect player to fill out a team’s roster, what traits should he have? Versatility, willingness to play special teams and an individual that embarrass you off the field are just a few that come to mind. Being a good football player doesn’t hurt either. These qualities are what NFL teams want in their players, from number 1 to 53. I had the opportunity to speak with Nate Bussey recently and he fits all these categories and more.Thank you.
