Geo's 2011 Mock Draft – Version B: Pre-Combine Edition

Hey everyone, sorry this is cutting it so close to the point of just about being late, I've had a lot on my plate this week. As stated in my first mock (Version A: Pre-Senior Bowl Edition), my thought process is to hopefully produce a mock draft around this time of month for January (A: Pre-Senior Bowl), February (B: Pre-Combine), March (C: Post-Combine & Pro Days), and April (D: Final). Heights and Weights are up-to-date from the Combine (per NFL.com).

Star-divide

1. Carolina Panthers – Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson (6-3, 280)

Carolina is Ron Rivera's first and maybe only head coaching job in his career, and as such I have a hard time believing he'll put it on the shoulders of Cam Newton. So instead of quarterback the Panthers look to another critical position worth the first overall pick: defensive end. They let Charles Johnson prove he's worth his second contract (doubtful) with another team and take who they consider the best DE in the class in Bowers, who seemed to finally get it as he dedicated to being in great shape during the past offseason and the result was a highly productive player on the field, and talk is that the unfortunate death of Bowers' father has only furthered his maturity as a young man. Rivera knows pressuring the quarterback is key, particularly now playing in a division featuring Drew Brees, Josh Freeman, and Matt Ryan.

2. Denver Broncos – Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina (6-4, 265)

New head coach John Fox isn't married to Robert Ayers, Fox didn't draft him (McDaniels made that terrible reach), so Ayers certainly isn't go to stop Fox from taking the athletic and talented DE he covets in Quinn. Especially when Elvis Dumervil didn't even play a single game last season because of a torn pectoral injury, there's some uncertainty until he proves he's fully recovered and effective again.

3. Buffalo Bills – Cameron Newton, QB, Auburn (6-5, 248)

Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey are set on picking a quarterback here, and the potential of Newton wins out.

4. Cincinnati Bengals – A.J. Green, WR, Georgia (6-4, 211)

It looks like the Bengals and Carson Palmer may be headed towards a divorce. I think the Bengals take Green here as part of convincing him otherwise, and also to eventually replace annoying pain in the ass Chad Johnson, but the Bengals probably also cover their bets by drafting Ryan Mallett with their second round pick. They will overlook his character concerns to give him the opportunity he's seeking and his strong arm can get the job done playing outdoors in Cincinnati.

5. Arizona Cardinals – Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M (6-3, 246)

The Cardinals add the talented pass-rusher in Miller in hopes of him becoming an impact 3-4 OLB for them. He's a little light, but that didn't stop them from taking Daryl Washington (6-1 3/4, 230) last year to play ILB, and Miller similarly looks to be an every-down linebacker despite his size. The Cards value Miller's experience as a senior, him playing through injuries in that senior year, and his lack of character and motivational concerns.

6. Cleveland Browns – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU (6-0, 219)

It was only a matter of time, but the Big Show is finally installing the 4-3 defense he wants his teams to have. I definitely think the Browns are going to sign free agent DE Ray Edwards (keep a mental note), if either Bowers or Quinn reaches their pick they'll consider drafting them too. But both Bowers and Quinn are off the board in this mock, as is Green if he was being considered, so that leaves the ultra-talented Patrick Peterson. The Browns made a good pick in Joe Haden last year, and Holmgren will look to improve the team further by taking an even better SEC CB prospect this year.

7. San Francisco 49ers – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri (6-4, 234)

New head coach Jim Harbaugh starts his regime taking a talented quarterback he can work with and who will fully buy into his program.

8. Tennessee Titans – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn (6-4, 291)

Fairley falls because of character concerns, motivational concerns, his raw game, and his outspoken displeasure of playing in colder locales. The Titans are no strangers to taking on some risk in their first round picks (Adam Jones, Vince Young, Chris Johnson, Kenny Britt), in the hopes that he'll become the playmaker on the defensive line which then elevates their defense as a whole. Had Newton or Gabbert still been available, they might have done differently. Quarterback-wise, I'd sign Alex Smith if I were them.

9. Dallas Cowboys – Marcell Dareus, DE, Alabama (6-3, 319)

Jerry Jones is playing the misdirection card in terms of CB, but I think the Cowboys have their eyes on Brandon Harris of Miami because he seems to fit their physical profile. So while they could take a cornerback here in either Prince Amukamara or Jimmy Smith, the Cowboys beef up the front seven with Dareus and look to draft Harris with their second pick (staying put or trading up).

10. Washington Redskins – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska (6-0, 206)

Carlos Rogers has absolute stand hands but I'd overlook that and actually like to have him at a relatively cheap price. However Rogers think he's in for a MAJOR payday and he's certainly not worth that, although the recent contract to Stanford Routt (facepalm) will only further his beliefs. Phillip Buchanon is also a free agent. The Redskins move on and take Amukamara, although they still deal with their horrible decision to convert to a 3-4 defense.

11. Houston Texans – Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri (6-4, 263)

As I pointed to in my first mock, the Texans are in desperate need for a 3-4 OLB. I put Aldon Smith here because I think his measurables and length ultimately win out.

12. Minnesota Vikings – Cameron Jordan, DE, California (6-4, 287)

Jared Allen is coming off an incredibly disappointing year, Ray Edwards is lost to free agency, Brian Robison is not close to a high-caliber starter and could be a free agent too depending on the new CBA, and Everson Griffin is a moron. Also, Kevin Williams turns 31 years old in August. Cameron Jordan can start at DE, and with his strength and motor can slide inside as a pass-rushing DT. And it doesn't hurt that Cameron Jordan is the son of 6-time Pro Bowl TE Steve Jordan who played 13 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, the bloodlines and the local connections are bonus. As I said before, the Vikings sign Vince Young to be their starting quarterback (or acquire Donovan McNabb if they can't sign Young).

13. Detroit Lions – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado (6-8, 319)

I wanted to put CB Jimmy Smith here. Especially with Gosder Cherilus having 2 more years on his rookie contract, they drafted Jason Fox last year which already gives them 3 tackles on the roster, so it doesn't seem as though they would go tackle here. But ultimately Jim Schwartz has the confidence and the resume that he doesn't need a first-round cornerback to build a very good if not great defense, so I'm going to guess the Lions pull the trigger on getting a potential franchise left tackle to start for years to come in Solder. He's big, athletic, intelligent, and he's good at run-blocking, he just needs to iron out the inconsistencies in his pass-blocking. And yes the Lions' OL needs to improved, their YPA was among the bottom third of the league (despite having Calvin Johnson among other weapons) and they couldn't keep one quarterback healthy last season.

14. St. Louis Rams – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama (6-3, 220)

Mark Clayton will likely be re-signed and Donnie Avery is returning from injury, but the Rams certainly won't pass up the chance to draft Jones here.

15. Miami Dolphins – Mike Pouncey, C, Florida (6-5, 303)

I think the Dolphins will sign DeAngelo Williams in free agency, which eliminates popular pick Mark Ingram from consideration. And then the Dolphins surprise some by drafting Pouncey as the new starting center to improve their interior OL and open holes for Williams.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars – Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue (6-4, 267)

Gene Smith continues to build his defensive line, acquiring the talented and tenacious Kerrigan.

17. New England Patriots (from Oakland) – Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College (6-7, 311)

Castonzo needs to improve from a strength standpoint, but he doesn't lack for effort as he's probably the most tenacious tackle on the field. He gets after it, and he has the smarts and the character, as well as the agility and the measurables the Patriots like. Matt Light is an unrestricted free agent and turns 33 years old in June, he was never the greatest pass-protector but did his job well enough, however it's time for the Patriots to move on with their two highly-talented and athletic tackles in Castonzo and Sebastian Vollmer.

18. San Diego Chargers – J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin (6-5, 290)

Adding a great 3-4 DE prospect should make San Diego's already very good defense even better.

19. New York Giants – Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama (5-9, 215)

I refuse to believe that a smart and competent GM such as Jerry Reese will take the risk of signing injury-prone runningback Ahmad Bradshaw to a lucrative second contract. Now if they can re-sign him cheap, sure, but even a somewhat reasonable deal could be out of their range considering the money already invested in Brandon Jacobs and Bradshaw's injury history (which the Giants know better than anyone). They instead draft Mark Ingram, giving Eli at least one capable runningback on the roster he can depend on without worry.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Tyron Smith, OT, USC (6-5, 307)

Obviously it would be best to give the Bucs the impact 4-3 DE they need here, but I don't think I see such a candidate here. There's some concerns about Adrian Clayborn that maybe the Bucs could overlook, or maybe they sign someone in free agency (former Panthers DE Charles Johnson? They saw him twice a year). But given that, and the highly-regarded talent of Tyron Smith (some say he won't get out of the Top 10 nevermind 15), they pull the trigger on the tackle here. I think there's still something left to be desired with Donald Penn, and you obviously want to protect Josh Freeman who could easily be the best young quarterback in the NFL.

21. Kansas City Chiefs – Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia (6-3, 270)

Houston has been highly productive and disruptive playing as a stand-up rusher at Georgia. Combine his play with athletic ability, and KC continues to add to their defense by drafting him.

22. Indianapolis Colts – Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State (6-5, 321)

I must admit, Sherrod is the tackle I want for the Colts, so intentionally or not I may have geared for him to reach this pick. But I think the fit is perfect. It's Sherrod, not Castonzo or Carimi, who primarily played in a two-point stance this past year, which is similar to the pass-happy Colts. The Colts want tackles who move well, have very good feet, have long arms, are bright enough to play in the offense – Sherrod fits all of that. He has great character and helped make the program a winner. He's a positional blocker, not a punishing blocker. All of which fits the Colts, you may be sensing the pattern here. Bill Polian likes to compare new players to former players, and I think he can see quite a bit of Tarik Glenn in Sherrod. And obviously I wouldn't be dispeased with the pick. ;)

23. Philadelphia Eagles – Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin (6-7, 311)

Me quoting me, from the first mock: "Knuckleheads are not dependable. Jon Runyan wasn't a knucklehead. Winston Justice is a knucklehead. Gabe Carimi is not a knucklehead." And that was before news that Justice needs a scope on one of his knees that could potentially require microfracture surgery. Andy Reid loves his big guys and Carimi has the capability of playing left tackle should Jason Peters not be able to play – Peters hasn't started all 16 games since 2006, he has missed 8 games the last 4 years, and times where he deals with an injury of some type aren't few or far between.

24. New Orleans Saints – Akeem Ayers, LB, UCLA (6-3, 254)

Admittedly I'm not a big believer in Ayers so that probably plays a part in him lasting until this pick. But the Saints need to add another pass-rushing threat and will be able to make use of Ayers in that and other roles, much like they envisioned using Jerry Hughes who they wanted to draft last year.

25. Seattle Seahawks – Jake Locker, QB, Washington (6-3, 231)

No this is not because Locker played in the state of Washington, it's because he's a good QB prospect. The Seahawks shouldn't let Matt Hasselbeck's playoff game against the Saints have them forget the rest of his season, and while they do have Clipboard Jesus, Locker could be the guy of the future they need.

26. Baltimore Ravens – Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado (6-2, 211)

Honestly I don't expect Smith to go this low, especially after he does great at the Combine this weekend, but I couldn't find an earlier spot to slot him in this particular mock.

27. Atlanta Falcons – Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa (6-3, 281)

Too far of a fall for Clayborn? Maybe, we'll see, but the Falcons took Peria Jerry two years ago despite some little concerns that dropped him a bit in the draft, they could do the same here with Clayborn and add potentially an impactful player on their defensive line. Which they need to do, and the decision to take Clayborn is easier without any of the top offensive tackles still available.

28. New England Patriots – Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois (6-0, 227)

Patriots have some departing veterans from their RB core and Green-Ellis could likely become an unrestricted free agent after this season depending on the new CBA, so they add the talented Leshoure.

29. Chicago Bears – Corey Luiget, DT, Illinois (6-2, 298)

Obviously the Bears would like to upgrade their offensive line, but I don't know that Marcus Cannon is that much of an upgrade considering Mike Tice has crafted a successful project at RT with the kid they drafted last year. If they wanted a shaky LT they would just start Chris Williams there. Instead, considering Tommie Harris is no longer the player he once was, the Bears cut ties and draft the talented and explosive 4-3 DT in young Luiget. His playing in the same state actually had no impact on this pick when I made it, btw.

30. New York Jets – Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor (6-3, 334)

If I had trades in this mock, maybe the Jets trade up to get Jimmy Smith, to replace numbskull Cromartie. Is this where Phil Taylor cracks the first round? Seems like the spot, especially without a standout 3-4 OLB prospect the Jets need available. Unfortunately Kris Jenkins hasn't been able to stay healthy, it may be time for him to hang them up.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers – Marcus Cannon, OT, TCU (6-5, 358)

The Steelers are going to let RT Willie Colon walk in free agency and RT Flozell Adams is a short-term solution. Enter Marcus Cannon, who can play RG until taking over at RT.

32. Green Bay Packers – Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State (6-5, 294)

Surprised he lasted until this pick, but the (well deserved) Super Bowl champs get a quality 3-4 DE prospect in the son of Ironhead Heyward. Considering Cullen Jenkins is leaving to sign a lucrative contract in free agency, this is absolutely perfect for them.

I'd give the Patriots a DL at #28...

…because there’s a run on the defensive line from #29-32. With the #33 pick, the Patriots can take Leshoure, so why not beat the DL run and still get the running back? Great picks for the Patriots, just a suggestion for an improvement.

by Richard Hill on Feb 25, 2011 2:16 AM EST reply actions

Would the Pats know that when making the pick though?

How do they know Leshoure makes it out of the round when they are picking?

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Yeah, it's a calculated risk

But I think the odds are favorable. Chicago hasn’t signed Matt Forte to an extension yet and will cut ties with Chester Taylor, but I think in their minds they have bigger fish to fry so to speak with their first round pick.

Statistics do not tell the whole story, not even close.

I was more talking about the way he said it than the actual premise I guess.
because there’s a run on the defensive line from #29-32

Maybe they think this will happen when they are making their pick, but to go back and say “Since this is how the draft turned out you should have done this.”

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Chicago is actually NOT cutting ties with Chester

Angelo has stated that Taylor does not have a target on his back and that those are just rumors.
So Chicago won’t be in the hunt for a 1st round RB

Devin Hester. 14 Koff/Preturn TDs in 5 seasons.

Because it's generally assumed that a lot of late round teams are looking for DEs...

…like the Jets, Steelers, possibly the Bears, and the Packers. I think the Bears will go O-Line, but DL is in the top portion of “draft needs” for those teams, while RB is not for any of them.

by Richard Hill on Feb 25, 2011 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

My initial pick at #28 was actually Heyward but obviously decided to change it to Leshoure

Because of his ideal size, potentially (very) good measurables, and a great year of production this past year. And the turnover at the position that I mentioned above.

But you’re right RH, those four teams between 28 and 33 likely don’t take Leshoure, so they could potentially draft someone else at that particular pick. Granted I didn’t do trades in this mock, but still.

Don't know if you knew already but

I heard the Colts interviewed Sherrod again at the Combine already.

I was not aware of that

but am quite pleased to hear it! Thanks for the info, AngelsColts.

Like I wrote, I really hope he reaches their pick.

He measured in at 321 at the Combine too! Tarik Glenn was listed at 6-5/325 (although very, very likely that he had a few more lbs. than that).

Here’s hoping …

I don't put much weight in comparisons....

but as far as the pick itself I think it would make sense and seems to be the first person at least that we know of that the colts are showing interest in. I really like Tyron as all know but he won’t even make it to our pick and thank god that Solder wont either Id hate to have him.

Just to be clear

The Tarik Glenn comparison isn’t the or a determining factor for me at all.

It’s just the icing on the cake, I suppose you could say.

Btw I am preparing myself for the Tyron Smith pick

Just in case it does happen. There is the possibility.

I have from now until late April.

Hey question.

Im sure its been said but besides the 2 years and degree thing what are your reasons for not liking Tyron to us I know shakes. I also think the 2 years an degree have a place in the prospect process for us but not as great as many think and think and think there is too much credence given to it.

For me it’s not the degree itself, it’s a question of football intelligence, intelligence, mental/emotional maturity, physical maturity, and work ethic. (Which can be partly if not entirely answered in the manner in how guys get their degree.) Well I don’t know if question is the right word, but I’d want to find out if/he checks out in those areas. He checks out in physical skills, but that’s not all of it. At least not for the Colts, with their first round pick, it’s not.

Football intelligence and intelligence, can he ably run the offense? Can he handle blitz recognition? (Btw I should have mentioned that Sherrod may not be sharp at blitz recognition but I don’t think that’s as much an issue of intelligence with him as an area to work on.) Can Smith handle the audibles and line calls, that are likely to remain part and parcel of the offense? I don’t know Smith, he seems to do okay on the field, yet he was academically ineligible for the bowl game in his sophomore year (as a starter), so it’s a concern that you’d ideally not like to have for the starting left tackle for the Colts.

Maturity-wise, he hasn’t gotten in any trouble, so that’s a definite positive. Let’s not forget/overlook, he is a 20-year-old prospect, who doesn’t turn 21 years old until December. Relatively speaking, this is a very young prospect. Which is where physical maturity also comes in.

Work ethic, you know this AngelsColts, not every player at USC is a hard-worker. They’re all talented, sure, but to be frank they’ve got some dogs and the NFL teams already know this. Some of them pretty much coast off their physical abilities, but that won’t be enough at the pro level.

And in Smith’s case, you factor in that he actually hasn’t played left tackle. It’s not because he can’t, but however the way it worked out at USC, he didn’t.

He has the physical skills, but does he have it from the neck up to use those skills to become a very good player? Can that happen with the Colts? That’s the most important thing.

And these aren’t questions I ask of only Smith, I ask this of every and any prospect. I feel like I’m singling the kid out but I don’t want to, I apologize for that impression.

Statistics do not tell the whole story, not even close.

by project geo on Feb 25, 2011 3:24 AM EST up reply actions

So....

It appears most of your questions are about the above the neck stuff. And although there are things that can point us different ways to gage that we can’t really do that very well. Obviously though the Colts can do a better job of it as they have the benefit of working with these prospects (all of them as we know) and interviews, plus all the other research im sure they do on everyone.

Honestly though in general and not just applying to smith at all im not sure that you can in any way gauge someones level of intelligence in any form based on being ineligible for one game. And I think we can both agree that the Colts def. wouldn’t not draft someone because of that. It just wouldn’t make sense.

What does help is it in no way was a pattern for him in this case and it was the only incident he had. As far as run the offense. If you mean the system we run and such then Id say yes. Id ask otherwise do you think the LT runs the offensive line? they really don’t and at least not for the Colts.

What im seeing though is we each have our things about players that we question that keep us from liking or being sold on players. Its just how it is and the only thing we seem to more or less agree on is Solder isn’t a T we want. At least I think we agree. Otherwise im kinda glad we don’t all seem to like the same prospect as last year…

Its just how it is and the only thing we seem to more or less agree on is Solder isn’t a T we want.

Not really. I haven’t mentioned Solder much because he’ll be taken before the Colts’ pick. That’s my expectation anyway. If the Colts end up with Solder I’ll be very please, but I’ll be please with any of the offensive tackles (Tyron Smith included) because I think they’re all very good even if none is perfect.

Btw it didn’t hit me at first concerning Sherrod’s Combine weight, but Sherrod gained 9 pounds between the Senior Bowl and the Combine (basically a month). That’s head-scratching, usually guys slim down to run the 40, so it really makes me wonder about him.

I am disappointed with his Combine measurables too, but I won’t discount him for them. His numbers are very similar to Bulaga’s last year, actually, other than obviously arm length.

Statistics do not tell the whole story, not even close.

Sherrod

Everyone knew he was athletic, the question was strength. So it is not surprising he added weight, he’s probably been trying to add muscle.

There was one drill he was extremely quick in, but other than that I was not impressed. Castonzo came off as more athletic, which was not supposed to happen. I think Mayock might have Sherrod right as the #5 tackle. He has a lot of work to do to learn pass protection.

Not a fan of Quinn

I dont see this org risking their highest pick on franchise history on a guy who didn’t play last year

If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.

by DBroncs1414 on Feb 25, 2011 2:57 AM EST reply actions

Fair enough

Quinn did lose his junior season due to one (or more?) NCAA violations. The question to ask is whether the bad decision-making involved in the NCAA violation(s) indicative of him as a whole?

Case in point #1: Andre Smith. Suspended for his final bowl game as a junior because of illegal contact with an agent. Isolated bad decison-making? I would say probably not in his case. He definitely has the talent, but does the guy have it upstairs? He’s suffered foot injuries the last 2 years. Maybe just fluke injuries? Probably, but could they potentially be tied into lack of conditioning and preparation? Perhaps.

Case in point #2: Dez Bryant. Lied to the faces of NCAA officials, was suspended for the rest of his junior season. I don’t think he’s the sharpest tool in the shed, but he could be really football smart (when he’s not late and/or sleeping in meetings) and he looked great as a rookie until his season was cut short due to injury.

Let’s be honest, gentlemen: this is a professional game. Professionals, not student-athletes/college students. Getting the job done as the latter tends to prepare for doing the job as the former, however it is not required and there are certainly examples of that throughout the history of the NFL. Hence why football intelligence is a separate factor to consider.

Of course skills are important too. The NFL isn’t stacked with Ivy League QBs. :p

As for actually missing the season itself, consider though that Sam Bradford essentially missed his junior season, due to a shoulder injury which he immediately re-aggravated, and yet was still the 1st overall pick last year and he played very well his first season in the NFL. Although Bradford was part of the Oklahoma program the entire time, not sure if Quinn can say the same.

I would be very surprised if Quinn was taken at #2

not because of concerns about not playing last year, although I am not saying that they will raise doubts, but because of his size.

Doom weighs in at around the 250 mark and that would mean that the two starting DEs are smaller DEs. It has worked at the Colts but if Fox wants to replace Ayers (and I am assuming that if a DE is selected at 2 then he is being drafted to start earl) then I would imagine he will be going for someone who has 20-30 lbs on the likes of Doom and Quinn. In other words I would be surprised if Denver go with DE with the 2nd pick if Bowers has already gone.

I'd just like to note that that isn't Quinn's official Combine height/weight

We’ll find that out on Saturday:

Thursday, February 24:
Group 1(PK, ST, OL), Group 2 (OL), Group 3 (TE) – Measurements

Friday, February 25:
Group 4(QB, WR), Group 5 (QB, WR), Group 6 (RB) – Measurements

Saturday, February 26:
Group 7 (DL), Group 8 (DL), Group 9 (LB) – Measurements
Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 – Workout (timing, stations, skill drills)

Sunday, February 27:
Group 10 (DB), Group 11 (DB) – Measurements
Group 4, Group 5, Group 6 – Workout (timing, stations, skill drills)

Monday, February 28:
Group 7, Group 8, Group 9 – Workout (timing, stations, skill drills)

Tuesday, March 1:
Group 10, Group 11 – Workout (timing, stations, skill drills)

But that’s what nfl.com/combine had for the time being, so I used it.

i realise that but I would be surprised to see him come in at 270-280 the size of which I would have thought the Broncos would be looking at for a DE to come in if they wanted to move on from Ayers

Here's an exercise:

Look at the teams that Quinn registered a sack against. Count how many of them are quality opponents.

Spoiler: He had sacks against Citadel, East Carolina, Virgina, Georgia Southern, Duke, and Boston College.

What games did he have one tackle?

Another spoiler: Florida State, Virginia Tech, Miami.

Those were some of the only good schools they played in 2009.

I’d say that his only sack against quality competition was Castonzo at BC. No one denies his athleticism, but it makes you think- would you use a top 5 pick because of someone’s athleticism, despite the fact that they a) missed a year and b) really produced against weak talent?

Also, I’m hoping that people believe this and he drops to #17.

Awesome breakdown

I hadn’t seen that before, much thanks.

Bowers and Quinn likely make up the top 4-3 DE tier, but Quinn’s interviews at the Combine are going to be critical and similarly so for Bowers.

Statistics do not tell the whole story, not even close.

When over half of your sacks come against Duke and Virginia...

…I’m going to question that a little bit. When over 90% of your sacks come against bottom tier competition? That’s a red flag for me.

Couldn't the Browns have drafted Fairley and the Niners get PP?

Or better yet the Niners get Fairley. Because I am praying that we don’t draft a QB in the first round.

I edited some things out of the 49ers description to keep things short

1. Alex Smith. Jim Harbaugh looks to be a very good evaluator of QB talent (interesting note: I read somewhere that he had David Carr graded as a 6th rounder in 2002) and for him to be as public in his praise and desire to work with Smith, there’s something there I would think. Of course Smith wants to get great coaching and have the opportunity to start, this might be his best chance at that, despite the bad history of previous regimes.

Side note: why I recommend Smith to the Titans is because their offensive line probably gives him the best chance at being given time and space to throw accurately (the overthrows come with pressure, nevermind the injuries that come with hits). And if that happens, he can deliver the ball to their skill position players they have. Of course as a Colts fan I’d rather they not acquire Smith, hopefully Rusty is the only one they want.

2. Blaine Gabbert #1. What ultimately sold me on making the Gabbert pick was reading that Harbaugh (supposedly) recruited Gabbert out of high school. Again touching on his QB evaluation skills, and obviously if true, this is a guy he wants to work with and can see doing great things for him. Similar to Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman.

3. Blaine Gabbert #2. Drafting the kid and rolling with him as the starter means taking some lumps. But also that there is no distraction from the QB position, he’s the guy and that’s that. Ultimately it gives the team one direction, which is what they need to be successful. Now obviously whether they go anywhere in that direction is up to the team, the QB, and the coach & his staff. But it worked for Jim’s brother John in Baltimore with Joe Flacco, even though Flacco isn’t even that good imo, so Jim could take special note of that.

Statistics do not tell the whole story, not even close.

I couldn't find any information that said that Gabbert was recruited by Harbaugh/Stanford.

In fact Gabbert recruiting from high school says that he wasn’t.

Why is everyone spouting this Blaine Gabbert recruited by Harbaugh thing?

He’s tried to recruit 100s of players whom he’s certainly not going to draft.

Fractals r awsum.

And Mark Ingram is an excellent pick there

Thanks

Yeah I think people are kind of going overboard with the offensive tackle to the Giants. For some reason they completely write off Beatty which is a real head-scratcher imo, he’s only 2 years into his NFL career and actually did okay stepping into a starting role due to injuries.

Sure McKenzie isn’t a spring chicken (32 yrs old this May) but other than his bad game against Robert Mathis, he played okay if not good last season. And Diehl is Diehl, in a vacuum he’s probably better off at guard but he is a starting left tackle. That’s already 3 tackles on the roster.

Reese can definitely take an OT if he thinks he’s the BPA, but it’s not the pressing need some make it out to be.

If anything interior OL might be the bigger need. But Reese might be willing to stick with the guys at hand, having them recover from their various injuries.

And of course, Mark Ingram is awesome. I think he’s great value at that pick, he could be a great addition to their offense like Hakeem Nicks was 2 years ago.

Btw for anyone wondering, it’s not that I don’t think Ahmad Bradshaw isn’t a good player. He definitely is. It’s a question of whether he can stay healthy and effective during his second contract. Personally I wouldn’t take that chance, although the guy is still rather young (turns 25 yrs old in May) considering his experience in the league.

Sorry + I want to hear your input

Sorry to disappoint, I know I hate seeing mocks that give my team a player I don’t like.

But give me your input:

1. Who do you want the Panthers to draft?

2. Who do you think, at this point in time, the Panther will draft?

Then he'd double-facepalm

Or his two facepalms would intersect in front of his face and he’d high-five himself

Dear God no for the Steelers

The Steelers will not reach in the first. They go by BPA and that would be Brandon Harris at that spot.

As far as FAs go, like Colon, never ever, under any circumstances, listen to what an agent is feeding the media. His only job is to get more money for his agent, so he pushes all the crap that will lead to that. Neither Colon or the Steelers have said that Willie will not be back. I am very skeptical that the Steelers will let a guy go that they took so long to develop and who looked very good before getting injured. It would be rather short sighted for them to release Colon in favor of a much older Adams. Unless Colon is seeking a ridiculous salary, which would surprise me after an achilies injury, the Steelers will work to bring him back.

Yeah

Cannon has a 2nd-3rd round grade. No way Colbert reaches that far for him. Brandon Harris is who I would take if the draft played out this way.

Agreed

No way the Steelers select an OL with weight problems over Brandon Harris. I wouldn’t mind Cannon in the 2nd or 3rd but not in the first at all. Harris would be the much better pick as the Steelers desperately need help in the secondary. As for Colon he is as good as gone. Ed Bouchette said the Steelers have hardly talked with Colon’s agent and most likely will give him a token offer to stay. Fine by me.

I like Taylor to the Jets

but your comment about trading up isn’t going to happen, they dont have a 2nd round pick and I don’t see them dealing next years first but with Mike Tannenbaum running the draft it’s possible we only have 2-3 picks anyways.

+1

I really like Taylor here. But I think I would be just as happy if we traded back and got an early 2nd.

I like the Ayers pick to the Saints and Liuget to the Bears.

Tampa gave Penn a big contract extension last year. And Youngblood is awful. So any tackle will be going to the right side. They have so many needs, it is hard to project their pick.

by ct17 on Feb 25, 2011 12:37 PM EST reply actions

This:
I think there’s still something left to be desired with Donald Penn, and you obviously want to protect Josh Freeman who could easily be the best young quarterback in the NFL.

Penn is a Probowler at LT, protected Free’s blindside perfectly well last year. It’s the rest of the line that needs major upgrades.

so i am not the only one

Dallas is interested in Brandon Harris
if Smith and Prince are gone I would LOVE that pick

by Archie Barberio on Feb 25, 2011 1:40 PM EST reply actions

honestly

I really like Dareus here, not bad
but we need seconary or OL help at 9

what scares me
this Cam Newton talk, I pray he is off the board

I think Jerry will take Mark Ingram, which I would love, but would be sweating until our 40th pick praying a OT is there

the thing about Newton, Romo is 30 he has alot of years left, but I remember when we didnt get a backup ready to take over for Aikman and it took us 10 years to find a QB
so if we took Newton, I would understand it and I would be happy we have a really good QB in the waiting
but we would have major needs heading into round 2
the Packers did this with Rodgers, if Newton is there it does make some sense

great pick for the lions at 13 also i thought you shoud know that gosder cherilus had knee surigry last year so nate solder could be the starter at right ot next year for the lions next year . because you just dont know how heathly gosder cherilus will be at the start of the seasion next year and as you say if your the lions gm the last think you want to worrey about is haveing big hole ar right ot spot next year .

Kerrigan yet again

I don’t understand why Kerrigan is seemingly an auto-pick for Jacksonville at 16 when there are clearly more talented players on the board. I’d be pissed if we took Kerrigan with Tyron Smith, Adrian Clayborn, Akeem Ayers, Jimmy Smith, Justin Houston…heck, even Jake Locker and Martez Wilson on the board. I’d rather have all seven of those players than Ryan Kerrigan.

Absolutely

We don’t want Kerrigan at 16. I personally like Bowers, Quinn, Jordan, Aldon Smith, Clayborn, and Justin Houston over Kerrigan. He’s my seventh-rated 4-3 DE (I don’t think Watt is a 4-3 DE).

Wow, how stupid of a pick for the 9ers
7. San Francisco 49ers – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri (6-4, 234)

New head coach Jim Harbaugh starts his regime taking a talented quarterback he can work with and who will fully buy into his program.

It’s not like St. Louis took Sam Bradford (who is a better QB prospect than Gabbert, yes) over Ndamukong Suh (who was definitely better a better prospect than Fairley, Dareus, and Amukamara) in the previous draft. Nope, that couldn’t have happened.

PS. Fairley to the 49ers is a ridiculous and clueless notion.
