Could Denver be looking to trade the second overall pick?
Denver Post columnist Dave Krieger reported on Monday that unless there is a rookie salary scale, the Broncos could consider trading the second overall pick.
John Elway, the team's vice president of football operations, says the second pick is expensive. Elway said he hopes the collective bargaining agreement comes together quickly so they can figure out how to slot their board.
With that basis, and the fact that Denver is fiscally conservative, Krieger says the Broncos face a roll the dice in regard to the second pick in the draft.
If they keep the pick, expect the Broncos to target defense. Elway noted that the team finished last in the league in defense, calling that side of the ball a concern.
The Broncos currently have two picks in the second round – 36 and 46. The team gained the additional second-round pick as part of the Brandon Marshall trade with Miami. The Broncos don't have picks in rounds four and five.

It'd be wise for them to move back
McDaniels did unspeakably horrible things to both sides of the ball and the ability to acquire multiple picks in early rounds would be beneficial.
They need a QB- Tebow will only hold them back.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they are in position to draft one due to Tebow next year.
Bradford to Onobun!
unspeakably horrible?
I wouldn’t go that far, especially about both sides of the ball. I think he left us with a solid core for the offense, but agreed on D. The worst thing about all this though is we are at the same spot we were in right before we hired McD, if not worse
Just the defensive side actually
The offense was about as productive as it was before he arrived.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Vikes?
It would be a good spot for the Vikings to move up and get Gabbert if they are willing to.
Skol
The Patriots have the ammo to move up and get a guy like AJ Green or Von Miller…

If they do,
it won’t be for Von Miller.

All the way up to #2?
Using the value chart (outdated, but especially so for the top couple picks), the Patriots would need to trade the #17, #28, #33, #60 and #92 to get up to #2. It’s not happening.
If the pick is too spendy for you
isn’t it too spendy for other people?
There isn’t even a Vick or Manning worth trading up fro in this draft. It sounds more like some owners whining about the CBA not being done.
other teams could afford a high draft pick
especially teams that haven’t had to guarantee a ton of money to earlier first rounder picks already. One of the problems being a team like Detroit or Cleveland: all that guaranteed rookie money starts to eat up your cap space…
The difference between guaranteeing a second overall pick to, say, the twenty-second overall pick is huge (you could pay a couple of mid-priced veterans with the difference)
The 2010 Bucs: Considering their two-minute offense works wonders... Why can't EVERY offensive drive be run like that during the other 58 minutes of the damn game?!
How about this
Denver receives: 17th pick, 28th pick and 3rd rounder
New England receives: 2nd pick and 4th rounder
Do not want.

one problem with that
is that Denver doesn’t have a 4th rounder to give.
Another problem
NE rarely trades up.

I wouldn't say they don't trade up...
…since they traded up for Gronkowski in ‘10 and Ron Brace in ’09, both top 50 draft picks. It’s just that they want value for their draft picks- and #2 overall is definitely not value.
I must say the transperancy is a breath of fresh air
kudos to Elway. They do want a D player but I’m not sure they’d want one at the spot they’re drafting, especially if they are convinced the Panthers are taking Fairley. I think they’d like to trade down for PP or Dareus, and they feel #2 is too high for both of them.
List of possible trade partners, including team and player they are getting:
Tenn: Gabbert
Wash: AJ Green, Gabbert
Arizona: Von Miller, Gabbert
This is just preliminary, I haven’t given it much though. I think the best chance Denver has of trading down is to have someone go up for QB. Von Miller is possible if the team that goes for him is convinced Buffalo will take him if they dont. AJ Green is a possibility, but I dont really see a team giving up a lot of picks for a WR, no matter how good he is
Arizona would likely have their pick of those two even if they don’t trade up. I would be surprised if Gabbert is off the board before Tennessee picks as well. I don’t know that anyone is going to want to take the #2 pick for the same reason the Broncos want out. It’s too expensive.

its too expensive for now
but new CBA=rookie pay scale. They want more picks deeper in the draft, so a new CBA means they could trade down. I said though that Gabbert is the key to a trade down, and even a trade partner has to be convinced Buffalo or Cincy will take him if they dont trade up
As a Lions fan I have heard this trade down stuff on a yearly basis.
Good luck Denver. Seems to me that Denver is in an enviable position this year.
At # 2 they can get one of the top impact players in this draft to boost their defence at DT, DE, or CB. Then use their two early second round picks to get two more strong starters at O Line, Safety, D Line or Linebacker. Trading down to get a couple solid starters as opposed to a real difference maker does not make sense to me.
I never watched them much, but I thought a lot of Denver’s defensive issues were schematic rather than talent. If they go back to the 4 – 3, I think their talent will be used better.
not a half bad analysis
I think talent has a lot to do with it though. The biggest problem is that the DL has sucked for years now and both Shanny and McD ignored it for positions that weren’t nearly as big of needs. I think no matter what scheme we run we need more DL, at least better ones. Doom and Ayers will start, and hopefully prove they can start for years together (they have yet to start together, I think doing so will make them both better but we’ll see). With that, I say the first pick be either Fairley or PP then in the second we go for CB/DT, whichever one we did’t draft first, and then see if a S or LB of good value is there
Yes, I can see that a DT [Fairley or Dareus] at # 2 is a solid pick.
And in the second round, Phil Taylor [if he lasts until # 36] or Paea at # 46 would be excellent to shore up the interior of your line. Jenkins might even be available at your early third round pick [# 67] if you bypass the DTs in the second.
I think I'd prefer Dareus over PP.
Denver’s needs in the front 7 are just immense. Dareus’ production dipped some this past year, but it’s been pretty well documented that he played most of the year with a high ankle sprain and was still effective. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he started closing ground during the offseason evaluation process.
We will have to address CB soon for sure, but I think we get something worked out with Champ or franchise him. Goodman is still solid if healthy. Basically I think we’re good for another year or two at CB if we can improve the depth a bit. Too bad Perrish Cox has managed to put himself in a bad situation. Maybe Syd’Quan can step up his game a bit. Oh were have you gone Jack Williams.
If Denver does trade down, they shouldn't fall too far
This is going to be a defense-heavy First Round draft, especially D-linemen, and if Denver falls too far they’ll miss some quality DEs and DTs. If I were Denver, I’d suggest trading with Minnesota, who’s gonna want to snag best available QB.

Don't all teams look to trade back?
I mean unless its a QB an you don’t have one or Ndamukong Suh waiting for you to draft them, don’t all teams want to look back?
And who’d want to trade up? Guys like Fairley and Bowers are solid potentially pro bowl caliber guys…but couldn’t you wait for a Darues, Aldon Smith, Rob quinn..etc. Or even Pat Peterson…he might be very good too, but so are Prince and Brandon Harris.
AJ Green might be one to trade up for, he’s a great player. But Julio Jones is pretty damn good too.
Denver’s probably stuck with that pick unless for some odd reason someone REALLY wants to draft one of the QBs.

Chiefs Scott " The Don" Pioli might be putting in a bid
As it stands the chiefs have 2-5th round picks this year and our needs of the ball dictate getting the best quality early… I can see Pioli making a move
We need BEEF; This is my mock prediction 2011
1. Houston LB - Georgia
2. Moffit G - Wisconsin
3. Powe NT - Ol' Miss
4. O'Dowd C - USC
5. Carter S - Oklahoma
6. V. Brown WR - San Diego State
7. Taua RB - Nevada
