Mock Draft 1.0

1. Carolina Panthers- Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson.

Ron Rivera is a defensive coach. The Panthers built there success on Julius Peppers, and they could be extremely tempted to take Bowers as their new Peppers.

2. Denver Broncos- Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina.

John Fox is another defensive-minded coach. Patrick Peterson is a possibility here, but Quinn could provide a spark to a pass rush that only had 23 sacks last year.

3. Buffalo Bills- Cam Newton, QB, Auburn.

Chan Gailey passed over Tim Tebow last year, but Newton and C.J. Spiller in the same backfield? That's got to be too much for Gailey to pass up.

4. Cincinnati Bengals- Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU.

Jonathon Joseph could be gone this year, and Leon Hall is a free agent next year. Peterson is the most athletically gifted player in this year's draft, and the Bengals aren't biting on Carson Palmer skipping town.

5. Arizona Cardinals- Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn.

A 6'5 300 lb monster, Fairley had 11.5 sacks last year. No DT on the Cardinals roster had a single sack last year.

6. Cleveland Browns- A.J. Green, WR, Georgia.

Peyton Hillis showed last year the Browns can run the ball. It should only get better with Montario Hardesty being healthy this year. While Josh Cribbs is electric, the Browns need a true #1 receiver. Green will help Colt McCoy get better.

7. San Fransisco 49er's- Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri.

Neither Alex Smith nor Troy Smith could do anything with the offense last year. With the weapons at his disposal, Gabbert could be the 49er's QB for years.

8. Tennessee Titans- Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama.

New Coach Mike Munchak knows how important the battle of the trenches is. I do see a possibility of them trading back and taking Mike Pouncey.

9. Dallas Cowboys- Adrian Clayborne, DE, Iowa.

He's an upgrade over both of their starting defensive ends.

10. Washington Redskins- Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M.

Too much talent to pass up at 10. Should help Brian Orakpo get back to his rookie numbers.

11. Houston Texans- Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA.

He should help Wade Phillips transition to the 3-4.

12. Minnesota- Julio Jones, WR, Alabama.

With the news that Sidney Rice will test free agency, and the top 2 QB's already taken, the VIkings will draft his replacement. And then sign Donovan McNabb.

13. Detroit Lions- Cameron Jordan, DE, California.

Question marks at DE. An outside rush could be the last piece Detroit needs to make a real push for the playoffs.

14. St. Louis Rams- Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska.

The Rams need to improve their defense. Amukamara can help solidify the back end.

15. Miami Dolphins- J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin.

Mark Ingram is a possibility here, but Randy Starks is currently their best DE.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars- Nate Solder, OT, Colorado.

That offensive line is a wreck. They need to keep whoever is in the backfield upright.

17. New England Patriots- Mike Pouncey, OG, Florida.

I doubt the Patriots even stay here, but if they do, Bill Belichek goes to his favourite school and takes the best interior lineman in the draft. Logan Mankins might not be there for much longer, so Pouncey could replace him.

18. San Diego Chargers- Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri.

The Chargers seemed to do everything but win last year. They don't have much at DE right now, and Smith is the best prospect left.

19. New York Giants- Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple.

A really big presence at DT, can help shore up the inside of that defense.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin.

This pick is more me wanting Tampa to pass on Ryan Kerrigan. Plus, Donald Penn is the only starting quality OT on that team.

21. Kansas City Chiefs- Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor.

Probably their biggest need is the inside of their defensive line. Taylor is massive and should be a great NT in their 3-4.

22. Indianapolis Colts- Cam Heyward, DT, Ohio State.

25th ranked rush defense. Heyward's a big body in the middle.

23. Philadelphia Eagles- Jimmy Smith, DB, Colorado.

Will line up beside Nate Allen for years to come.

24. New Orleans Saints- Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue.

I'll pass on both running backs. Alex Brown was invisible this year, and Will Smith could move to LE and improve his efficiency. Should help our rush defense.

25. Seattle Seahawks- Jack Locker, QB, Washington.

He could have been the number one pick last year. Seattle needs an upgrade at QB and Locker is very athletically gifted.

26. Baltimore Ravens- Rahim Moore, DB, UCLA.

Ed Reed is falling apart at the seams. Their back end is horrid.

27. Atlanta Falcons- Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland.

They miss out on Moore by one pick, so they get an explosive receiver to take some pressure off of Roddy White.

28. New England Patriots- Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh.

Wes Welker is a great slot receiver. Baldwin can be the outside receiver they need.

29. Chicago Bears- Aaron Williams, DB, Texas.

Charles Tillman is their best DB.

30. New York Jets- Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama.

LaDainian Tomlinson played well through the start of last year, but he's old. Shonn Greene didn't do much on his own.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- Ryan Mallet, QB, Arkansas.

Ben Roethlisberger will be traded before the draft.

32. Green Bay Packers- Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois.

Ryan Grant missed most of this year, and they saw how tough it was to win without a running game. Leshoure can fix that.

umm...

No think you on Heyward. And I would especially not want him with Castonzo, Sherrod, Smith all still on the board. Id take any of these three before DT. Only way id take a DT over OT in 1st round is if it was Solder left or maybe Carimi although id consider Carimi though he is still a RT to me.

Heyward’s a big body in the middle.

Heyward is only bigger than one of the 5 DTs in the Colts rotation last year. Sherrod and Castonzo are much better fits.

Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

Let's assume the Steelers do trade Roethlisberger before the draft.

Is there any way that organization takes a flier on a coked out head case like Mallett??? That’s just an absurd pick

The spark for the pass rush

will come when Doom comes back. The only reason people had Quinn top 5 recently was because he was supposed to blow up the combine, and he didn’t at all. At this stage, he’ll be lucky to be a top 10. I’d go with whoever you have as the top DT or PP

Castonzo wont fall out of 1st rd

Like Lester said the Bears would take him, and after the Bears, the Steelers and Packers both need an OT so they wouldnt pass him.
And I dont like LeShoure for the Pack, they would take a number of players before taking a balanced runner (they already have 2 balanced runners Grant and Starks). Those players would be Castonzo, Brandon Harris, and Justin Houston.

I gots to put the team on my back, doo.

Cardinals

Calais Campbell had 6 sacks (led the team), Darnell Dockett had 5, Alan Branch had 2. It’s not real impressive, but it’s more than zero. Not sure where you’re getting your data.

Giants, Jets

I think DT is just about the last place the Giants will go. They have Canty + Joseph (last year’s 2nd) + Cofield (if he resigns – can be RFA tendered) + Bernard (backup of last resort) + Tuck (rushing on obvious passing downs). Some teams like to rotate DT. Fewell believes the starters should play every down. I don’t think the backups get more than 5 snaps per game. So if you draft Wilkerson, Joseph is a waste.

Jets drafted McKnight last year in the mid rounds (3rd or 4th?). Ran for 100+ yards when he got playing time against the Bills. Not sure it justifies another 1st round pick. Although Ingram is a huge value there.

Im pretty sure Reed

had 8 INTs this past season in only 10 games. That’s not horrid. And in those games Reed didnt play, whoever did had to be decent.

I gots to put the team on my back, doo.

by BlackPack-fan on Mar 1, 2011 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

We were the top rated secondary while Reed was gone, and when he came back we fell off a bit while he was trying to get back int he groove of things, but yes he led the league in interceptions while only playing in 10 games.

Josh Wilson and Dominique Foxworth are two CB’s we have invested quite a bit in and look to be our future starting CB. Lardarius Webb has all the upside in the world and is only getting better and ask any Ravens fan about Chris Carr, they will tell you he was our best CB last season.

If all 4 of those guys come back next season along with Reed getting healthier, Ravens fans will tell you that CB or FS isn’t even a top 5 need.

I am not getting on the author of this post for choosing Moore with our 1st pick, I would love for that to happen. I was more upset with his dumb comment.

"If only Flacco could put up numbers similar to Matt Ryan, or maybe just improve his stats year-to-year, he wouldn’t seem like such a wasted draft pick. by Mr MaLoR on Mar 1, 2011 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Dumb and all too frequent

Its amazing how many people seem to think that we have a really bad secondary and that Reed is either “falling apart” or is going to retire either this off season or next.

We had the #8 pass defense in the league without any pass rush outside of Suggs and Ngata and Reed has said that he feels better than he has in years because of the forced rest he had while on the PUP list. He also asked for an extension on his contract, not something that a guy wanting to retire would do.

Pass rush is a far bigger need than the secondary unless we dont re-sign our own FAs (which looks unlikely seeing as how heaps of guys who would normally be UFAs wil be RFAs as there wont be a CBA by Friday)

Offensive line a wreck?

That’s what happens when your promising second year RT goes on IR and you’re forced to replace him with Jordan Black. Defense early and often for the Jags.

Bowers?
they could be extremely tempted to take Bowers as their new Peppers.

Charles Johnson (Taking over for Peppers): 62 tackles, 12 sacks, 1 forced fumble
Julius Peppers (First season with Chicago): 54 tackles, 8 sacks, 3 forced fumbles

What happened to Tyron Smith?

An eclectic series of picks to say the least. The commentary is sure to get a response from Steeler and Raven fans, among others.

For the Lions, I personally like Jordan, but we have a good pass rush already with Avril and L. Jackson from the edge. Jordan is more a LDE and stopping the run than a great pass rusher. I don’t believe the Lions will pass on Prince A. if he is there.

However, with the Carson issue up in the air, they could take a flier on Gabbert or Newton. Mike Brown is so clueless, he’ll probably draft AJ Green, if he’s there, and hope for Locker or Mallett (fits the Bengals better, what with all the “alleged” drug problems and all) in the 2nd.

2 FBs and 1 RB usually.

We had 3 FBs all year long. Ryan Grant, our runner, went down on game 1. Our rookie who was drafted to add depth behind Grant as a runner, was on PUP for much of the season. Brandon Jackson, our 3rd down back, ended up having to pick up those carries along with one of our FBs, John Kuhn, until Starks was healthy and ready to play.

Summary: we had a ton of FBs but no real rushing threat for most of the year.

How do they Lions

have question marks at DE, or need an improved pass rush? We need a corner, and two OLB’s. After that, possibly another saftey and a run-blocking guard and a power back. The Lions had one of the top pass rushes in the NFL.

Trust me...

Miami is fine on the D-Line. Starks is a Pro Bowler, Langford played better than Starks did all year, and we have a very sold nose tackle. Plus, we have last years 1st rounder Odrick coming back from injury, and our back-up DE (Tony McDaniel) ranked as one of the best 3-4 DE’s in the league last season. This draft is all about offense for Miami (Unless, of course, an elite defender somehow slips- then it is best player on the board)

Also,

you made Tampa pass on Kerrigan so he would fall to your Saints. If thats not fixing the draft to fit your desires I don’t know what is

Not that great of a Mock draft

Never saw anyone have the Jaguars draft a OL in the first round and Julio Jones will not be avaible by the 12th pick then the ravens will not take Moore that early he is a 2nd round pick

Jimmy Smith will line up opposite Nate Allen for years to come?

Are you implying Smith will move to safety or did you forget and mean Asante Samuels?

Pretty much agree with everyone's assestment on how terrible this mock is.

Steelers trading Roethlisberger? That’s in itself a joke but then to draft a guy who is rumored to be a druggie? Wow, just wow.

Proud fan of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams and the Pirates too.
