Who will be this year's Tyson Alualu?
It's not what you think. No really, it's not. I wrote this article for Big Cat Country regarding players I thought could be this year's Tyson Alualu, but the meaning of that phrase is likely different than you'd think. I wanted to share it with you guys and see who you think "this year's Tyson Alualu" could be...that is, if there even WILL be a "this year's Tyson Alualu". Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I'm not sure if you mean just for the Jags here, but if not a guy like Robert Quinn could be that type of pick.
Most have Bowers rated higher as a DE, but a team like the Bills who like to mix up the 3-4 and 4-3 could fall in love with a guy like Quinn, who seems like he’ll be a stud at both 3-4 OLB and 4-3 DE.

For any team
I just wrote it from a Jaguars perspective, but I think most teams have players that they like more than the draft “experts”.

yup
some team transitioning to a 3-4 need that beheamoth NT to anchor the line. I can see the Redskins or Texans drafting him in the top-15
"The right (draft) move sometimes might be to strengthen a strength. Filling holes in the 1st round leads to grabs and busts." - Steve_Chiefs.
I have trouble seeing that as a WTF pick though
I think the mock draft world wouldn’t be surprised if he goes really high considering the high demand for NT with the low supply of it
If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.
I think Alualu is unique
he was a freak of nature that had a solid offseason. He was very good during the season too but just the face he’s a DL in a 3-4 defense as well as playing in the west he was underrated.
I would’ve said Rahim Moore is one to watch out for, but I don’t think he’s done anything to warrant it.
Maybe Davon House as a first rounder? Justin Houston might not be a 3-4 guy, but as a 4-3 RDE his first step is off the charts, so maybe he’s ahead of some of the others? (Damn is this a good DE class…)
Muhammed Wilkerson timed out pretty well for a dude that big. But I don’t think he’ll be a top 10 pick like Alualu.
I really don’t think anyone who isn’t being considered a top 20 pick right now goes in the top 10.

Ryan Kerrigan
no one is talking about him and he’s a straight up beast pass rusher. What also gets understated is his all around game, sure he’s not gonna be a beast run stopper, but he can hold his own. I think he’ll be a top 20 pick, he’s just too good of a pass rusher, and I can’t see too many teams pass on that

Kerrigan is not a top 20 pick now?
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I haven't seen much of him there of late
I feel he has really gone under the radar in recent mocks.
If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.
maybe that's the problem?
putting too much stock in mocks….
Maybe if he goes at say…#11 to the Texans, that’s a surprise. But if he goes to the Jaguars at 15 I don’t think anyone would be surprised (and that’s not just cuz of what the Jags did last year either, tho I’m sure most would peg it as that again).
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
the way I read the post on BCC
was that it was a person who is mocked lower then they’ll be taken. Hence my Kerrigan pick. It could be subject to change if his stock goes up, but as of now I see his real draft value soaring above his mock draft value
If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.
that's fair and all and you're entitled to it
just I’m not sure where you see Kerrigan going in mocks. I just checked a few on the right and all of them had him in the top 20.
That’s unless you think he’s going somewhere like Tennessee at #8.

I think Tennessee is too high
but I think the Jags will be lucky if he falls to 16, just saying.

The Jags fans in general really aren't big on Kerrigan
There are better players available, in our opinion. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be the pick. I just hope he isn’t.

I would rather have Brooks Reed than Kerrigan
regardless of which pick is used to pick the player

Reed over Kerrigan?
I like Reed as well, but c’mon the dude never posted a double digit sack season. Any specific reason why you like Reed over Kerrigan?

Quicker, more athletic, and better hair
I also like Reed’s bend while pass-rushing; Kerrigan seems to run past the quarterback when he tries to turn the corner; Reed doesn’t.

Cam Jordan
his teammate will be a lot alike if we draft them
by TheonlyJagsfaninSD on Mar 14, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Except that he's going to be playing DE
and hopefully would have a similarly productive rookie season.
Like DBroncs1414 said, the whole phrase is used to describe a player who is drafted above where they were projected
I know for Jags fans, the Alualu pick had all the fans saying “what the f***”, so if theres a first round pick that generates that reaction, then thats the Alualu pick.
Then maybe mine isn't the best
But I can’t think of a WTF pick, hence them being WTF picks lol

Good read!
Last year the Falcons picked Corey Peters a DT from UK in the 3rd, everyone was screaming that he was a reach. Turns out the guy played as well as any DT out of the draft (sans Suh). The best GM’s constantly defy the media draft Guru’s.
I personally think Randall Cobb, Christian Ponder and Justin Rogers may be a few.

Adrian Clayborn
Is going to fly into the Top-15 to a team needing a 4-3 rusher. I don’t think he’s worth a Top-15 but I get the feeling NFL teams love him.
I gots to put the team on my back, doo.
good one

Phil Taylor
Just a thought. I also think Martez Wilson could go sooner. Christian Ponder too.
I think Mikell LeShoure could be one.
He’s a fringe first on most mocks, but damn what a physical specimen/producer. He ahd a beast year and has done nothing but helped his case this offseason. If Ingram goes early, lets say to Miami, I think there’s a possibility he could go soon after

I would love the Chiefs to Pick LeShoure
I am the only one though

Next Rickey Henderson! ; )
(“No one hears about me, especially because of the injury, but he is a baller”)
Kyle Rudolph
There has been at least one TE selected in the first round every year since 2001 (thats as far back as I went), but rarely more than one. If history repeats itself, Kyle Rudolph will betaken in the first, but not likely top 20.
Chiefs pick #21
We need a WR and Rudolph splits out in WR.
hmm, Pioli would never do that though

Locker?
I guess that depends on what projections you look at though (since lots of people have him going in the top 15 while others have him going in the third round). So I dunno if he counts.
I'd be happy with him at 16
I don’t think it’d really surprise anyone for him to go early, though, given his immense upside.

Yeah, that's why I was so unsure.
It wouldn’t be a huge surprise…but it would be at the same time because some people don’t like how he performed in college.
I say Muhammad Wilkerson or Justin Houston could easily slide into the top 20
dark horses:
Orlando Franklin
Colin Kaepernick
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."
I could definitely see Kaepernick
going in the first if Newton, Gabbert, and Locker are taken in the Top 10 and Ponder or Mallett are taken in the first half of the draft.
I think that Cameron Heyward will surprise people in April
or else in September. I think he could easily be on teams radar as a top ten pick & I think he will be a Pro Bowler in the NFL
Really? I don't see it

This is a breakdown on him from Consensus Draft Services, I think he is as good as any D-lineman in this draft
He shows a mean streak and aggression, he uses hands well, locking out, he extends arms very well to keep lineman away from him, setting edge well against run, he uses a mixture of speed and strength to beat blockers. He’s quick enough off the ball to stun blockers and beat them with his first move. He rarely gets locked up by a single blocker. He fights off chips and punches well, and is strong enough to recover from initial blows. Has good balance and can change direction at full speed. Can make the splash play with a big sack or his 80-yard INT return in the season.
He able to rush off the edge, but also big enough to go toe-to-toe with big o-linemen. Is strong and has a variety of rush techniques demanding opponents to account for him on every play. He looks great at times, like in the Sugar Bowl when he completely overwhelmed the highly considered DeMarcus Love. Heyward generates many double (and triple) teams, yet still manages to produce at a high level. He is an excellent character kid with a tremendous pedigree.
Pick a QB.
Let’s be honest….if this was last year’s class or the year before, or the year before that….all 4 of the top guys wound have difficulty cracking the first round (the notable exception of Newton who would undoubtedly get drafted late first due to his potential upside).
Every one of these guys has serious flaws in their game, or their mental makeup. Yet it won’t surprise me at all to see Gabbert, Newton, Locker and Mallet all go first round.
"Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not 'every man for himself.' And the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked 'em up."
I see a lot of Phil Taylors,
but I have mocked him as early as #11 to Houston…but then again I don’t have “great” hair.
"Don't go away Mad, Just go away."
No Dontay Moch? someone will fall in love with his athleticism and perhaps will shoot up draft boards.

Jaball Sheard is a great one
I was reading somewhere the other day I think Wes Bunting (don’t quote me on that) that said Maryland Running back Da’Rel Scott was a FIRST round prospect on mutlilple teams boards
He might go ahead of Leshorue, Williams and we’ll all be going HUH????
I think that would be a definition of a alualu pick.
I’ll be writing something up for him over at nflmocks this week
I think Wes Bunting did something like that last year
it might have been Kyle Wilson at #7 to the Browns.
I think he takes a dart board of his top 50 players and fire away until he has something like that. Tho of course Scott being in his top 50 doesn’t make much sense..maybe its top 200 players?
