2011 NFL Mock Draft: 1.1
The combine has concluded and plenty of prospects have seen their draft stock impacted. A few players that I have moving up my board are JJ Watt, Marcel Dareus, and Julio Jones. While the combine was far from the only factor in evaluating these prospects it did have an impact. If anything, the combine forced me to go back and look at the games and see if they play up to the athletic ability they showed. The biggest drop I had was Akeem Ayers who completely fell out of my first round after a terrible 40 time. The slow time showed that he was either under-prepared or not as explosive as I originally thought.
1. Carolina (2-14)- Da'Quan Bowers- DE- Clemson
- The Panthers decided not to use their franchise tag on DE Charles Johnson and while he could resign I am sure he will at least test the free agency waters. This factor has given Bowers the lead in my book as a pass rushing defensive end is the key to a strong defense. Fairley is still in play at #1 and might get the nod if Johnson is retained. I have yet to jump on the Cam to the Panthers wagon.
2. Denver (4-12)- Nick Fairley- DT- Auburn
- John Fox feels that he is good at defensive end with Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers so that leads me to believe that either Fairley or Dareus will be the pick. Right now, I have Fairley rated slightly higher than Dareus but that will be a tightly contested battle.
3. Buffalo (4-12)- Marcel Dareus- DT- Alabama
- This week at the combine, Dareus showed that he has both great size and athletic ability. The Bills need to get stronger along both lines and adding Dareus to the defense will be an immediate upgrade. The recent release of Marcus Stroud opens a spot for Dareus.
4. Cincinnati (4-12)- AJ Green- WR- Georgia
- Not sure if Cincinnati or Palmer blinks first but either way Green would be a welcomed addition. If Cincy moves Palmer they could go quarterback but there should be a decent option available in the 2nd round.
5. Arizona (5-11)- Von Miller- OLB- Texas A&M
- I still feel that Arizona needs to go quarterback here but Miller will be tough to pass up. The Cardinals might be set on looking to upgrade the quarterback position with a vet which would open the door for Miller in this spot. There is little doubt that Miller will develop into an excellent passer rusher.
6. Cleveland (5-11)- Julio Jones- WR- Alabama
- The Browns are committed to Colt McCoy as their starter and now its time to give him a big time playmaker. In my mind, nobody helped their stock at the combine than Julio Jones. He showed that he has both the size and speed to change games.
7. San Francisco (6-10)- Patrick Peterson- CB- LSU
- This might be a little low for the super athletic Peterson but my mock just shook out this way. The 49ers get a shut down corner that will not only improve their coverage but also their pass rush. Look out of Peterson in the return game because he is dynamic on special teams.
8. Tennessee (6-10)- Blaine Gabbert- QB- Missouri
- Tennessee has zero long term options at the quarterback position on their current roster. Gabbert is the top rated quarterback on my board and someone that has a bright future. He isn't ready to step in and contribute right away and would benefit from learning behind a vet.
9. Dallas (6-10)- Prince Amukamara- CB- Nebraska
- Anybody doubting Amukamara's speed was silenced after he ran an unofficial 40 time of 4.37 seconds. This speed combined with this good technique will immediately help the putrid Dallas secondary.
10. Washington (6-10)- Cam Newton- QB- Auburn
- I still like this as a landing spot for Newton. Washington would provide Newton with a good situation and coaching staff. Coach Shanahan is bold enough to believe he could rid Newton of his bad habits.
11. Houston (6-10)- Cam Jordan-DE/DT- California
- The Texans will be looking to find pieces for their new 3-4 defensive scheme and Jordan will be a nice fit at the 5 technique. He showed that he can both hold strong against the run and also get after the quarterback.
12. Minnesota (6-10)- Tyron Smith- OT- USC
- The fact that Smith weighed in at 307lbs at the Combine helps his overall draft stock. Smith is a young and athletic left tackle prospect that possesses good balance and technique. The Vikings offensive line was an issue all season long in 2010.
13. Detroit (6-10)- Robert Quinn- DE/OLB- UNC
- Quinn is the best player available and too special of an athlete for Detroit to pass up at #13. Quinn will team with Suh to give the Lions a strong defensive line for years to come.
14. St. Louis (7-9)- Corey Liuget- DT- Illinois
- St. Louis misses out on both AJ Green and Julio Jones but landing Liuget is a good consolation. Liuget has the versatility to play both 1 and 2 gap football. He has a good burst off the line to penetrate and also great hand usage to control and disengage from the blocker.
15. Miami (7-9)- Mark Ingram- RB- Alabama
- Still no change with this pick as I feel Ingram fills their biggest need. The wise move would be to cut bait with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams and reestablish the running game with Ingram.
16. Jacksonville (8-8)- Justin Houston- DE/OLB- Georgia
- Jacksonville is still looking to solve their pass rushing struggles and Houston is a pass rushing specialist. The fact that he weighed in at 270lbs and showed a strong lower half leads has me feeling comfortable about him playing defensive end.
17. New England (from Oakland 8-8)- J.J. Watt- DE- Wisconsin
- Watt is a fast rising prospect that showed surprising athleticism at the Combine. He is the ideal candidate to fill a 5 technique position in the Patriots 3-4 defensive scheme.
18. San Diego (9-7)- Adrian Clayborn- DE- Iowa
- San Diego is among the many teams looking to fill a void at the 5 technique spot. Clayborn fits that mold as someone that can hold strong at the point of attack and also bring a pass rush.
19. New York Giants (10-6)- Gabe Carimi- OT- Wisconsin
- This has been a pick I have stuck with for a few weeks now and still feel its a great fit. Carimi will bring both youth and size to the tackle needy Giants. Carimi's run blocking ability will fit in nicely with the way the Giants like to attack.
20. Tampa Bay (10-6)- Ryan Kerrigan- DE- Purdue
- Tampa Bay's defense will benefit greatly from a consistent pass rush and Kerrigan can bring the pressure. He is a bit undersized to play defensive end in a 4-3 but his pass rushing skills make it worth the gamble.
21. Kansas City (10-6)- Phil Taylor- NT- Baylor
- The Chiefs have been adding pieces to their defense line for a few years and Taylor represents the final piece to the puzzle. His ability to clog the middle as a nose tackle is something 3-4 defensive teams covet.
22. Indianapolis (10-6)- Anthony Castonzo- OT- Boston College
- The athletic Castonzo represents both good value and need for the Colts. He is the type of player that can be plugged in early and help protect Manning.
23. Philadelphia (10-6)- Brandon Harris- CB- Miami
- I can see the Eagles going in any number of directions depending if there is a free agency period and how it shakes out. Either way the cornerback position is an area of need and Harris represents a player with high upside.
24. New Orleans (11-5)- Martez Wilson- LB- Illinois
- Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams loves players with speed and the ability to attack. Wilson's skill set is very attractive to a coach like Williams.
25. Seattle (7-9)- Jake Locker- QB- Washington
- I still have Locker graded as a 2nd round player but the fact that Seattle needs help at the quarterback position and Locker has tremendous upside leads me to this pick.
26. Baltimore (12-4)- Jimmy Smith- CB- Colorado
- Smith has both great size and speed which is something the Ravens covet in their secondary. Baltimore has shown in the past they don't get scared away by rumored character red flags.
27. Atlanta (13-3)- Aldon Smith- DE- Missouri
- John Abraham is starting to wear down but his pass rushing presence has been a major factor in the Falcons success. All the teams that sustain success do so by planning ahead.
28. New England (14-2)- Nate Solder- OT- Colorado
- Having two first round picks provides you with the luxury of taking a project type player. Solder has a ton of athletic ability and potential but needs time to develop. He can sit behind the now 32 years old Matt Light and learn the ins and outs of being a consistent tackle.
29. Chicago (11-5)- Mike Pouncey- G/C- Florida
- Chicago needs help along the entire offensive line and Pouncey gives them some versatility. Ideally, Pouncey is a guard in the NFL but landing in Chicago could give him the opportunity to learn the center position from Olin Kreutz.
30. New York Jets (11-5)- Cameron Heyward- DT/DE- Ohio State
- The entire Jets defensive line is in need of a talent upgrade and that's exactly what Heyward will provide. He showed in the Sugar Bowl that he is capable of dominating a football game.
31. Pittsburgh (12-4)- Ben Ijalana OT- Villinova
- Ijalana is a bit of a project but projects at either tackle or guard. The fact that he can play either position will make him attractive to NFL teams come April.
32. Green Bay (10-6)- Muhammed Wilkerson- DT/DE- Temple
- Wilkerson could be the long term replacement for either Ryan Pickett or Cullen Jenkins.

Steelers won't reach for a project player in the first
It doesn’t fit the MO of Colbert. I would think if Pouncey dropped that far and Harris and Taylor were off the board they would trade up to get him.

Lawrence Timmons
Was a high upside supreme athlete with only one year of starting experience. No way the Steelers would draft a project player like that!
Kidding aside, I also wouldn’t be surprised if they found a willing team like oh, say, the Pats, to trade up with and leapfrog the needy Bears if an O-lineman like Pouncey dropped there. Ijalana also strikes me as more of a second rounder.

HUGE difference
Is that the Steelers are a LB manufacturers. The defense is so perfectly designed that anyone can excel as long as they are athletic and able to learn. Additionally, I would say Ijalana is a much, much more raw talent than TImmons was.
Also, Timmons came from FSU and Ijalana is from Villanova. Timmons spent a lot more time playing against elite talent than him.

Uh.. Patrick Peterson fell to 7?
1st round draft wishes.
Bengals: Blaine Gabbert, Nick Fairley or AJ Green!
Cavaliers: Kyrie Irving and Harrison Barnes!
I'm with you
Patrick Peterson is a top 5 pick and probably the cleanest player in this draft (no flaws).
I vote the cleanest player is AJ Green

Hard to imagine Derek Sherrod drop out of first round
Sherrod is definitely better OT than Ben Ijalana.
I am a patriots fan. I will take Kerrigan at 17, other than Watt. Watt is a little small for Pat’s 3-4 DE and I don’t think he has the enough strength to hold position against the run. Kerrigan could be OLB at 3-4 and DE at 4-3 sub-package.
ijalana can also play guard

I'm not sure about the Watt pick
Because I think the Pats would prefer to avoid Tom Condon. If he falls a little maybe they grab him later but at 17 there are enough other players available (Kerrigan, Costanzo, Aldon Smith) with less demanding agents that they can probably avoid picking him.
Size-wise, however, he should be good to go. At 6-6 292 he has the frame to bulk up a little bit and looks a lot like Richard Seymour, a modestly successful 3-4 end.
by 108 on Mar 2, 2011 5:28 PM EST up reply actions
Meh... I'm sick of seeing people put Watt at 17.
They say he is a “perfect fit” and “classic Patriot,” but I just don’t see it. His athleticism was surprising, but you just can’t compare him to Seymour. Watt doesn’t have the strength nor quickness nor instinct that Seymour has.
Easiest way to avoid a parking ticket: Leave your windshield wipers on high.
Watch some film.
He just makes plays. He is disruptive and has a non-stop, four quarter motor. As a Badger fan, I knew that his stock would continue to rise. I honestly would be surprised if he lasted until 17.
When I retire, I want to have Ted Thompson's job!
I can’t complain with the Eagles pick. I like Jimmy Smith more but I would be pretty pleased if the Eagles took a corner.

Personally I think the Eagles will take smith over harris
His dimensions and college performances are too solid to leave on the board. I know Harris had an excellent combine but I still see Smith as the better corner and I couldn’t imagine the Eagles letting him slip by.
actually smith was bigger and slightly faster so smith actually had a better combine

He had the better 40 time,
but Deion Sanders was blown away by what Harris did in the drills aparently.
Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!
Green Bay Packers: Super Bowl XLV Champions!!!!
in the drills
Harris looked better than Smith, although not by much. I would love for us to take Smith but Harris definitely seems to have improved his technique and I liked what I saw at the combine for the both of them.
Like I said, if Smith is on the board at 23 and we don’t take him, I’ll flip.
As a Lions fan I hope the draft does not fall this way.
But your selections are entirely reasonable. I just feel that the Lions have a log jam already at DE, and will have players fighting for playing time as is. Throwing Quinn into the mix means we will have to cut a DE who is entirely serviceable, and cut back on the snaps for Cliff Avril and Lawrence Jackson, who I think are both ready to break out.
I don’t believe the Lions will value Brandon Harris high enough to take him here, and there is no OLB worth a selection until round two.
If Quinn is there at # 13, I would not be surprised if a team traded up to get him. I think the Lions would agree to a trade fairly quickly.
"A lot of people have stayed 3 minutes in the ring with the bear, and they didn't do it by going at the bear. They did it by getting on their bike and running around. - Jim Schwartz 2011
no DE @ #1 for panthers
De is not the problem with their pass rush. problem is lack of push up the middle. panthers are happy with their DEs and charles johnson won’t be leaving. if you are going to look at Dline for them, look at DT and then fairley over dareus, mainly because when they run a 3-4, dareus translates to a DE in a 3-4 while fairley translates to a 1 gap DT like is used in dallas and san diego for 3-4.
beyond DT, i would be considering cam newton who is supposed to have a private workout with the panthers as well as a private meeting with richardson in the near future. also i would consider peterson to replace a most likely gone richard marshall or aj green who could help replace a possibly gone steve smith.
Vikes
I personally like Castonzo more than Smith. Castonzo is a known commodity. Smith never played on the Left side so I see him staying on the right or moving in to guard.
With that being said, if the draft played out like yours, the Vikes would have a hard time passing on Robert Quinn.
"I am patient with stupidity but not with those who are proud of it."

I’m not sure the Chiefs should make that move over someone like Aldon Smith. That is quite the scenario though. Would hate to be the one to make that choice.

We are pretty set at DE (Pioli is gonna give T-Jax one more year)
But we do not have one true 3-4 NT on the roster, granted I love Aldon Smith but he doesn’t address and instant need as great as Taylor does………..
Duece said "Change your sig", so I did...........
uh
Aldon Smith would be an OLB in a 3-4 which is a need.

Why on earth would N.O. draft a clear 2nd round inside linebacker in the first round where the only great player on our defensive from 7 is our lone inside linebacker?
Just cause he ran fast in a straight line, doesn’t suddenly make him a first round LB. He runs downhill, but that’s all he can do. He’s terrible and change of direction, and because of it can’t keep up with RBs or TEs in space.

Rather have Harris, Pouncey or Martez Wilson tho.
Can't complain about getting Von Miller

I like Phil Taylor at 21 for KC........
I would love Justin Houston there though………..

Houston looked terrible in the LB drills at the Combine. He looks like just a 4-3 DE since gaining weight.

Couple of things
1. Don’t be surprised if Julio Jones gets picked before AJ Green after the combine
2. The panthers gave Johnson the RFA tender and with the cap Richardson cleared they will match almost any offer sheet making Daquan Bowers definitely not the pick.
3. PP7 is going wayyyyyyyyyyy before San Fran hits the podium
by Imisshooooooooov on Mar 2, 2011 2:40 PM EST reply actions
I am a big fan of Julio, he could have went anywhere he wanted out of HS, went to a pass first team and put up crazy stats...
he had to know Saban is a run first team, and that he would be required to block if he wanted to see the field.
I have thought all along there is very little difference between Julio and Green, EXCEPT…
injuries! as much toughness as Julio has shown, he has also shown that while his body may be more stout than Greens,
it maybe more fragile. I still think he goes to either the Browns at #6 or Skins at #10, but NOT above Green
I like it

just a little FYI, if this does happen, it would be the third year in a row that we drafted a former Misouri player in either the first or second round. (Weatherspoon first round in 2010, William Moore in the 2nd round in 2009)
Falcons, like the Jags have a recent pattern of going with seniors with first round picks, although I could see them going with Tyron Smith, Kyle Rudolph, of Jon Baldwin (all juniors) this year

Cam Newton to the Redskins
is, as always, solid IMHO. I was disappointed in his passing at the Combine but not surprised, I think he will bring leadership & toughness as well as developing into an elite QB. Good Job on your mock, many are disagreeing on PP dropping to seven but it’s hard to argue the logic of the six that went before him.
Carimi is a fine pick
Castanzo seems to have gotten himself some more NFL strength tho and already possesses some elite lateral movement.
I like Carimi, but I think the Giants would go with Castanzo. Now that he’s the same size as Carimi and seems to be as strong, I can’t really see much of a difference with that sort of thing.

Smith to the Ravens
I would love it if Smith fell to the Ravens. He is exactly what we need in a corner – a big cover cover that can jam and has the potential to be a legitimate #1 CB. Hopefully some time spent with Reed and Lewis will knock a little of that cockiness out of him.
Anyone think it would be stupid to put Julio Jones ahead of Green in a mock???

If the debate for Denver is Fairley or Dareus, I would go with Dareus.
John Fox likes big DTs
He only started one DT under 300 lbs in Carolina. That DT weighed 299 lbs and started because of an injury.
Dareus is stronger, has better burst, better hand technique, and is more versatile.

Nothing that I’m aware of. AFAIK he’s still in consideration for 1st overall, 13th looks crazy to me.
Green will be the Panthers #1 pick
their defense was adequate,
their offense was putride and one dimensional.
opposing DC figured out Steve Smith and there was no help on the other side to take away the double coverage.

but houston is not going defensive end this yr…that is def no where near the biggest need! if peterson falls to 7, they will be looking to trade up for him, or ahead of dallas for p. amukamara! otherewise, look for them to pick up an LB or trade back
Honestly,
… there’s no way Houston takes a back-up 5-technique with Robert Quinn sitting on the board and no starter at SOLB on the roster. Williams and Smith are the starters at the end positions, I can see us bringing in a player like Marcus Spears to serve as first in rotation, and some of our old DTs can play there, too. Quinn gives us an outside presence opposite Barwin that if we don’t address in the first, becomes a huge position of weakness.
Dream Texans Draft:
1. Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia
2. Rahim Moore, FS, California-Los Angeles
3. Sione Fua, NT, Stanford
4. Casey Matthews, ILB, Oregon
5. Chykie Brown, CB, Texas
6. Jerrod Johnson, QB, Texas A&M
7. Chas Henry, P, Florida
DEFINATELY
i would be sorely upset with a cam jordan pick, although he may be a good player eventually, it’s just not a big enough need right now. people forget that antonio smith was a quality end on a arizona 3-4 defense that played for a superbowl!! the texans have made some boneheaded moves, but i think gary is too worried about his job to not pick a player that helps us win now!!
I see something a bit different happening in the first.
The way I see it:
Carolina – AJ Green WR
Denver – Marcel Dareus -DT
Buffalo – Cam Newton QB
Cincinnati – Da’quan Bowers DE
Arizona – Blaine Gabbert QB
Cleveland – Julio Jones WR
San Francisco – Von Miller OLB
Tennessee – Nick Fairley DT
Dallas – Patrick Peterson CB
Washington – J.J. Watt – DE
Houston – Prince Amukamara CB
Minnesota – Ryan Mallett QB
Detroit – Tyron Smith OT
St. Louis – Robert Quinn DE
Miami – Mark Ingram RB
Jacksonville – Cam Jordan DE/DT
New England – Anthony Castanzo OT
San Diego – Adrian Clayborn DE
New York Giants -Nate Solder – OT
Tampa Bay – Aldon Smith DE
Kansas City – Corey Liguet DT
Indianapolis – Gabe Carimi
Philly – Jimmy Smith CB
Seattle – Jake Locker QB
New Orleans Mikel Leshoure RB
Baltimore Akeem Ayers OLB
Atlanta – Kyle Rudolph TE
New England – Justin Houston OLB

This is not Cam Newton, once he escapes the pocket, he isn’t looking to throw to an open receiver once the defense comes up, he is looking to run by them.
I guarantee, there is zero chance the Redskins take Cam Newton.

should say
I would be willing to bet a $1000 that Shanahan would not take Newton.
Anyone want to take that bet that the Redskins will take Newton where the money is held in escrow by a lawyer under a private contract?
I’m game.
