Mock Draft - 4 rounds of ridiculous trades

I understand there's going to be a plethora of negative feedback: there always is with trades. Everybody here wants to trade back (and why not? MtD is all about finding value). With that being said, I wanted to screw around and try some stuff out, and see how a mock would shake out. Oh, and forget the trade value chart. If a team likes a player or wants to jump another team for one, they will ALWAYS overpay.

As always, feedback is much appreciated. Cheers!

Not bad for Ravens. I like Wilkerson for Solder, but understand why you would go OT in the first. Don’t think we would sign Asomugha because he would cost too much. We are trying to re-sign Ngata and want to get Flacco a new contract before the season is over. We will probably re-sign Wilson and carr then might have to re-sign McClain and Dawan Landry as well.

by AV23 on Mar 24, 2011 2:03 AM EDT reply actions

well you could let one of those CBs go with Asomugha, right?

And also heard that you guys were trying to resign Flacco not this year, but next. Its also an uncapped year. And Asomugha wanted to play on a team with an aggressive defense that had a winning record. The Ravens definitely fit the bill in that regard.

I definitely would love him to be on the team, but I just don’t see us giving him the kind of money he wants and think we will be focused on getting some of the other guys re-signed. We definitely would love to have him in baltimore though.

yeah, i doubt there's ANY team that can pay that much for him...

as a steelers fan that would suck..

but i cant see it happening with all the money youll be paying Ngata. resign your guys and get foxworth back healthy and youll be fine. i think your CB needs are overrated

by steel.curtain.number2 on Mar 24, 2011 2:33 AM EDT up reply actions

They are overrated and I agree I don’t think we would bring him in because of the money. It would just be more of a luxury because he automatically upgrades any teams secondary. I would love it, but most likely isn’t happening.

by AV23 on Mar 24, 2011 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Ofcourse you see the CB need as overrated

Steeler WR’s make plays in crunch time against the Ravens current crops of CB’s because of technique breakdowns. Why would you want that to change?

Asomuhga would certainly change the equation/dynamic a bit in games between the Ravens and Steelers.

by Ravens One on Mar 25, 2011 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t say I wouldn’t want Asomugha here, but I think he will be too pricey. Part of our coverage problems is the pass rush and allowing their WR’s to get down field. Also Landry is the bigger problem in coverage and can be a liability.

by AV23 on Mar 25, 2011 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

    I agree with you

I don’t expect Landry to return.

The Lions won't trade that much for Brandon Jacobs thats nuts

No way possible would anyone with common sense do that. You can get a runner anywhere….the leading rusher in the NFL went undrafted. No way possible that trade is even a remote after thought….totally a Giants fan writting up that trade lol…nnnooo way possible would we want a washed up back up….even if he was a free agent

by Shankdiddy on Mar 31, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I fail to see how this wouldn't make sense.

He was almost a 1000 yd rusher this season with the 2nd highest YPC (behind only Jamaal Charles). Your view of Jacobs as a washed up backup is false.

He’s also a ridiculously good complement for Jahvid Best. Jacobs can wear down defenses while Best kills ‘em in the 2nd half. He’s also an incredibly good pass blocker, which gives Matt Stafford even more protection. He’ll add another dimension to your offense.

Giving up only a 4th and at most another 4th is not a bad price at all.

    Seahawks

Love the first 2 rounds, but not sure about a WR in the fourth. What about an OT or OG? Seems like a bigger need to me. Also, what do you think about the hawks landing Gallery in FA?

by Lock_down on Mar 24, 2011 2:37 AM EDT reply actions

    Agree Completely

You are absolutely correct on the Harris comment — too small. Why would the Seahawks give up a 5th to move up five spots for Mallett — I do not see any of those teams taking a QB.

by DanJO on Mar 24, 2011 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

    Agreed

Also, this draft doesn’t have any DL or OL picked in the first 4 rounds. Pete made a point in the end of the season press conference that he wanted to focus on building the lines. I can’t see the Hawks pass on the DL here.

    Yeah i guess you're right

Forgot Harris was on the short side. What position do you see the Hawks targeting if they don’t go CB or QB? OL?

I do think that it will probably be Jimmy Smith if he's available.

They’re reportedly very interested in him and Carroll’s not one to pass over a guy due to character concerns.

Great that you have trades in here and it's interesting but the Pats...

(and no one else) would give up a low third rounder to move up two spots. Especially not too spots that late in the first round. There is a chart of accepted draft values and that would cost them a fifth rounder at most.

I hope BB uses all the picks. If you have a shot at a super bowl then you take it. It’s about rings.

Would love to see the Pats trade up to saaaay the 8th pick for a chance at a big impact player at position of biggest need – pass rush. Maybe even Fairley could drop to them and they’d have a big time end again the way Seymour played.
Great ideas… That point is worth making though my man. Peeace, tjw

by thadjw on Mar 24, 2011 2:52 AM EDT reply actions

    Ya, I agree

Also, having the 1st pick on the 2nd day adds more value to that pick so trading a third rounder in addition is too high a price

Thought about this. I want to start a movement... Pats TRADE UP and draft FIVE IN FIRST TWO ROUNDS

Thought about this. I want to start a movement… Pats TRADE UP and draft FIVE IN FIRST TWO ROUNDS

It can be done. We can start the movement here.

They are close to a SUPER BOWL. Picks in the first two rounds have greatest chance of going to pro bowl type success (just scroll through the last ten NFL drafts on wikipedia and check the pro bowl coloring key to get a quick glimpse of this)… Pats want impact now and are already very young in backup areas. What do they want a bunch of late round picks for? More special teams add-ins? They have enough already after a high number-of-picks drafts in recent history. Plus Brady won’t be injury free forever. Now you go for it and now you go for FIVE impact players. Thoughts from community here? Can we start the whisper campaign here folks? Get this on PTI and we can win.

I’ve give a scenario that could possibly be done.

Trade pick #17 and two 3rd rounders (plus another later 6th rounder if necessary) to Tenn for the #8 pick. Draft Fairley or whomever other big impact guy drops (Patterson if he’s actually there just because he looks so great or the Clemson DE Bowers). Use this impact DE pick to cover a big part of the biggest need – elite rusher like Seymour was.

Then trade a fourth rounder to move from #28 to about #23/#24/#25 to get a Pouncey-type impact guy at that slot (shoring up the O-line that was exposed by the Jets).

Then wait for the #33 pick to roll around. Awesome to have this next day pick… And BTW BB should be willing to trade up two slots or so to get a Heyward if he thinks he needs to but if you check sportznutz.com you can see this is commonly regarded as a 20 pt move (or a mid- sixth rounder)… Get that Heyward if for some reason you needed to get a Quinn around #8 (because #8 wasn’t available and you had to settle for a #10 or #11 impact guy (which Quinn really could be). So shore up that second rush guy to really make sure you didn’t get a Gholston-type pick that won’t really make an impact (imagine the Jets if he had been good?). Pass rush is key and we should no longer accept poor to average pass rush.

Now we are flexible here in all this action besides the #8-#11 guy we need definite impact from. We either have a Fairley-Pouncey-Houston (at around #33) type trio (get BPA for a position of need with last few picks here)… It might be a Quinn-Heyward-Wisnewski type trio. Or a Fairley-Kerrigan-Castonzo trio to hit close to the same need (shift OL future emphasis a little differently if this is the stud that drops).

We still would really benefit from giving Brady some guys to take pressure off the mulit-cornerback defenses that teams might throw at him now that the Jets used it well against the Pats in the playoffs.

(Need to say BTW – These previous three guys would be an awesome draft but we can do even better.)

Give Brady a genuinely dangerous weapon out of the backfield that can block jailbreaking DL guys (like the Jets put on him) and we are really cooking with gas. If Ingram slips because the Dolphins need a QB and everyone else is drafting for need into the mid-20’s then go for him. Make these trade-offs but just do make sure you get passrushers in high picks.

Get a M Ingram or a Leshoure if you wait to make that fourth pick around this area of the draft. Trade up again using next years 2nd rounder and get into early 2nd round for this runner that doesn’t fumble (a great MI strength) and can block and catch well. Remember what Brady did with Woodhead? Love that guy but he could pass himself off as a FootLocker employee (and he even did if you saw the YouTube video he was sport enough to participate in). Brady could kill teams with a more dangerous guy in there.

Then use that last 2nd rounder to get whatever tall-ish speed receiver drops. A Hankerson or even Pitt WR Baldwin will drop and the Pats will be there. We need an anti-Moss who will run a post or flag or go route with gusto every down and who will really stretch the D. It’s a true need if we want to stay on top. Watch the Jets game. Pats are in slight danger of giving other teams a blueprint to beating us.

Use the fourth rounder for a future OT tackle to help Light. Use last late rounder or two to get one more desired position secured.

Ideal that I challenge BB to grab: Fairley and Houston to get pass rush and energize D. We could really help all our DBs with more pass rush. And then Pouncey (have a great feeling about him), Leshoure, and Hankerson. Another OT for later (but likely to ride pine forever as many late round pics do). If Leshoure could be made into an Ingram then I’ll bow down to BB. Do-able to get this type of core group.

That’s five starters or near starters. That’s a real draft. I’m going to buy a page in the Globe. Go big like Theo Epstein has. Go Pats.

    Redskins

First off, you forgot to give us the Titans’ 4th rounder that you stipulated in the AH trade.
About the picks, I don’t like to see mocks that go QB and WR in the 1st 2 rounds. This fails to address any of our most glaring weaknesses, namely along our OL and in our defensive front-7. It seems a bit foolish to sign Braylon Edwards and then draft a WR while drafting no help on the OL or defense. I won’t criticize you for the Cam Newton pick, because I realize it is a very popular mock selection, but I sincerely hope he’s gone by the time we pick or we pass on him.

by CarverM on Mar 24, 2011 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

yeah my bad about the 4th rounder, I forgot

as for the actual draft, I didn’t think your defense was THAT bad last year…I’m thinking it was more the players trying to adjust to the scheme. I do understand about the Oline though.

My main thing with the Redskins was gettting cam newton to learning from donovan mcnabb, and by next year, he’ll have two extremely talented WRs there to give him help. With you guys losing portis, torain oft injured and I personally think Santana is gonna run out of gas soon, your offense needs help in the worst way. Still, though, I understand why you’d pick the lines cuz everything starts up front.

Except for the McNabb part. He has a huge roster bonus for the 2011 season. It seems highly unlikely that we keep him around and pay him that bonus.

    Buc's trade.

I really could see the Buc’s trade up for one of the elite DE’s. I’m just not sure if Smith is better than Kerrigan. Now if Bowers or Quinn start to fall I think they will move up.

I also have the bucs signing kiwanuka.

Smith is a freak, and I think he’d a monster a la Jason Pierre Paul if he’s behind kiwanuka and stylez g white. This pick was more about upside than anything else, and smith would’ve definitely have gone with NE, San Diego, and Jville picking

    Colts

Like the first two picks, though second may be a bit high for Sash. Not crazy about Nevis in the third. He’s a 3-tech DT and the Colts really need a 1-tech. Fua is a much better pick. The Colts won’t pick Rogders. Indy seems pretty dedicated to bringing back Addai and that produces a solid stable of RBs. The Colts’ run problems are due to the O-line and not the backs. Plus, Rodgers doesn’t fit what they look for in a back. Assuming there are no O-linemen worth taking, it’d probably be an attempted trade or looking to build depth somewhere on D

by TrueBlue87 on Mar 24, 2011 10:35 AM EDT reply actions

Jenkins is there too who I'd LOVE in the 3rd.

Don’t like the Rodgers pick either. Colts RBs need to pass block well and he just doesn’t have the mass for it. If he was magically plopped onto the roster they’d probably only use him at WR and returner like Brandon James last year.

well they seem like they are going to make a real effort to keep Addai

put a first round RFA tender on him, which probably won’t mean anything under the new CBA but shows they are willing to pay him a solid chunk of change. So I don’t think RB will be a significant need.

With OT, S, and DT taken care of I’d be looking for another O-lineman or maybe a corner. Jalil Brown is there who I really like as a mid-rounder.

1.22. Indianapolis* (10-6) Anthony Castonzo, OT

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sherrod is the pick instead, but there’s no fault with this. Castonzo could very well be the pick if he reaches the Colts, which isn’t looking like a certainty these days, your mock notwithstanding.

    2.21. Indianapolis* (10-6) Tyler Sash, S

Whereas this pick is questionable, because Sash looks lacking in speed and athleticism to merit a second round selection. I think he’s going to fall farther in the Draft than many expect, maybe the Colts draft him later on, or maybe they don’t draft him at all and it’s no big deal whatsoever.

As for who they might take instead, in this scenario with the players available, I’d probably say it’s Mikel Leshoure. He seems to hit every mark they look for except for sub-4.5 speed, but they’ll likely overlook it in the 2nd round and with his size and ability (including pass-catching).

They could also consider Danny Watkins, who you don’t have in your mock but will be drafted by some team in the second round come April 29. Luke Stocker is likely to be a second round pick as well, wouldn’t be surprised if the Colts are one of the teams that have him ranked that highly given his intelligence, his character, his size, and his ability. Also Leonard Hankerson, although I think he and Leshoure are unlikely to reach the Colts’ pick.

3.23. Indianapolis* (10-6) Drake Nevis, DT

Fantastic value in the 3rd round but doesn’t change the problem. I don’t think Nevis is on their draft board due to lack of intelligence and maybe concerns about him not playing up to snuff until his senior year. The Colts look for players who fit their system/team, and for all of Nevis’ physical talents, he doesn’t seem to fit.

Who instead? I’d probably point to Jarvis Jenkins of Clemson. I’m hoping he’s there at the Colts’ 3rd round pick but I’m not expecting it, but he’d be a good tackle for them to add with his combination of size, stamina, quick first step, and run-stopping ability. Although ideally they may be looking for a shorter 1-technique, for better leverage, and there is a guy I have my eye on. But if the Colts are unable to re-sign either Daniel Muir or Antonio Johnson, Jenkins could be a viable candidate to start.

The aforementioned Luke Stocker could be another consideration here, although I’ll be surprised if he falls this far come Draft Day Two.

4.22. Indianapolis* (10-6) Jacquizz Rodgers, RB

Could be a fit and the value is great, although Jordan Todman (who I didn’t spot in your mock) might be ranked higher on their board, but Todman could/would be taken earlier. Good call not putting Kendall Hunter here though, he doesn’t have the intelligence.

Statistics do not tell the whole story, not even close.

    Colts love two TE sets

I basically treat TE as two positions with 1.5 starting spots when looking at the Colts roster. There’s the TE/slot guy who is a full time starter (Dallas Clark and Jacob Tamme) and the in-line TE who’s PT varies depending on the gameplan, but sees a good deal of time on average (Brody Eldridge and, ick! Gijon Robinson).

Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

    Shake nails it

(Especially that ick, Gijon Robinson part! But hey, he can tell his kids he played in the NFL.)

The Colts need that #2 inline tight end, and the Colts did draft Brody Eldridge (2010 5th round draft pick from Oklahoma) last year. He might be that guy, he dealt with a rib injury that affected his rookie season, and he is raw as a receiving option as he was the complementary inline tight end to Jermaine Gresham. (Similar situation to the Colts, they don’t really like to project players.) Not sure if having him will stop the Colts from potentially considering Stocker.

Also note that Tamme is in the last year of his rookie contract, so he’s a free agent after 2011, and I wonder if Fort Worth didn’t make himself an opportunity and some money on a free agent contract with how he stepped in for Dallas Clark last season. And come June 2012, Dallas will be 33 years old and has dealt with some injuries in his career, so it could prove very beneficial to draft and develop Luke Stocker as that immediate inline tight end who can also contribute in the passing game for Peyton.

Would especially like to see 6-5/258 Stocker running routes down the seams instead of Austin Collie, so as to hopefully preserve Collie’s career (he can awesome and highly productive if healthy).

Good picks for Baltimore, I wouldn’t mind that draft at all. But the Ravens signing Asomugha? Not sure that is going to happen man. While I would LOVE it, we just have too many other priorities to take care of like Ngata, Flacco, Rice, Grubbs and so on. But if Ozzie made that move, man would it be a dream come true.

One more thing, you have Arizona signing Marc Bulger AND trading for Carson Palmer? Don’t think that would happen with Arizona, they would just keep one of them as their starter.

"Can you call Flacco a bust? He’s had super bowl caliber teams but has never gotten them there. The Ravens get into and win playoff games only because of the caliber of the rest of the team. The Ravens do not dominate much weaker defensive teams by winning the game by a large margin. The defense gave him a sizeable lead against Pittsburgh and he wasn’t able to close out the game. For all the reasons you call Boller a bust are the same things I see in Flacco." - TheShadow

    Chargers draft

If they take Ayers in the 1st seems unlikely they also take Sheard (although it would be good value). I think they are pretty happy with Tolbert and Matthews at RB so I don’t see them grabbing Murray when Ballard DE, a big need is right there. Don’t see them taking Jurrell Casey to move to DE. They need a RT – Hairston, Brewer, Carpenter, Pinkston (so many choices). With all the trades AJ makes, it seems likely he moves down to pick up 4th and 5th round picks he traded away or tries to move way up to grab Bowers or WR (hope not).

Also if they didn’t get Rice they will still not trade up for Jones we have to many needs to trade away valuable picks.

    My thoughts

In general, although you appear to be possessed, the trades and free agent moves are pretty good.

NE way overpaid to move up two spots. The Giants giving up three picks to move up seems unlike them, and IMO not worth it if we could have had Wright at our regular pick, who fills the SAM need.

Philly-Kerrigan. Really? What will they do with their 6 other DEs? You can’t bench Trent Cole, and they just used a 1st on Graham last year. And Miami drafted a tall, fast CB named Smith just two years ago.

    Vikings

Why is it that everyone thinks the Vikings are going to give up their first round pick for the overrated Kevin Kolb? This is not going to happen. Kolb has had TWO good games period. They were really good games against bad defenses but he still did it.

He has thrown more INTs than TDs yet many of the “sheep” just follow along with the dimwit media and prop up this guy like he is the second coming. Why?

If he was that good why is Philly getting rid of him? He is younger than Vick and should have more upside right? And Vick has a tendency to get hurt. Yet Kolb is getting moved.

    Go figure.

I just wish some people would think for themselves. Kolb is not that good and has yet to play a full season but somehow he has improved his draft stock.

If the Vikings give them anything for Kolb it would be to swap first round picks this year and give Philly a 2nd in 2012. But even with that I would pass. I would rather draft Ponder or Locker or Mallett. In 3 years they can be just like Kolb.

Worth a higher pick than their original draft position without doing anything.

    Miami

I think you kind of missed on more than one occasion with Miami. They currently have a very talented young and deep CB group and adding a first round pick is a little over the top. Also your 4th round pick of Pettis probably won’t happen as the team is looking for burners not bigger WR as they have enough of them already.

In this scenario I could see them going

    1. Mark Ingram .. BPA and will still fill the need of a big RB with Williams providing speed
    3. Clint Boiling .. they need interior line help and he fits the bill, doesn’t have to be a C as Incognito maybe able to fill that role.
4.a Andy Dalton QB .. don’t see him slipping this far but they would want to add a QB
4.b Lance Kendricks TE .. also don’t see him falling this far but he would be the complement that Fasano is missing

but instead of having us sign Sidney Rice, can you please NOT have us sign Sidney Rice? Do not want.

I like the mock for us a decent amount. Solid value at each pick. I’d personally have Ponder over Watt at 16, Sheard over Sands at 80.

Also, where is Edmond Gates? I have him above Sands at 80 as well.

    Personal preference re-mock:

    1. Christian Ponder

Very interesting Mock of the Offseason BBI. Recked you.

As a Lions fan, I like the trades that you had my team do, although I don’t like who you picked with those three third rounders.

    Sticking with the positions you drafted, although Mayhew really does not work that way, I would take;
CB – Curtis Marsh over Davon House. Much higher upside and Lions won’t get an immediate starter down here anyway.
OLB – KJ Wright over Mark Herzlich. Sorry, I don’t share a lot of people’s optimism on Herzlich’s recovery. I would love for it to happen, and fully admit that he would fit perfectly on the Lions……if he is back to 100%.
WR – Greg Little over Randall Cobb. Cobb is more of a slot guy. Detroit is looking for a true # 2 WR so Burleson can man the slot. Edmond Gates could be another option too.

I don’t want to sound greedy, but I would love the Lions to make the trade with the Giants that Houston made. Then the Lions could take John Moffitt C/G in the third, Marsh with the fourth, and Henry Hynoski FB with the sixth round pick.

Great mock draft, actually. The best I've seen.

One problem though, it makes too much sense. This is a “in the prefect world” scenario. Too bad the actual draft is never anything close.
