J.J. Watt NFL Draft scouting report

Photo

J.J. Watt
6’5, 290 pounds | Defensive end | Wisconsin

Pass rush: Watt is a strong pass rusher who has NFL-ready strength to play from the inside or outside. Doesn’t have the best explosion, but is quick to work the edge. Not especially fluid in his movement and he does have some trouble changing direction on the fly. Still, his spin move is good, but a little slow developing. Displays a very good swim move to work past blocks. Shows a good bull rush. Tends to get tall in pass rush situations.

Pursuit: Takes proper angles toward the ball carrier and doesn’t give up on plays. It’s hard to imagine people questioning Watt’s effort on a play-to-play basis. As good as he is in pursuit, Watt knows when to dial it down to simply hold the edge and anchor.

Star-divide

Run defense: Possesses and top-level punch to beat blockers in the run game. Consistent in his high effort getting after the ball. Watt’s playing strength really shows off against the run. Can be dominant against runs inside but is still athletic enough to defend the outside run. Has worked some inside against the run and uses a good swim to slip past blockers.

Strength: Has the strength to start as a rookie and not get washed out of plays. Has power throughout his frame, which he uses to his advantage. Has an impressive bull rush. Has the strength to hold up against the double team, which will help if he’s used in a 3-4 scheme.

Tackling: With his length, strength and effort, Watt can be an excellent tackler. He takes good pursuit angles to the ball carrier as long as he uses proper technique. Is a strong wrap-up sacker who can really deliver a pop.

Technique: One issue that might keep Watt from being a true NFL pass rusher is that he gets high in his stance. Watt has long arms and he knows how to use them to his advantage. Consistently gets extension with his arms. Watt has a tendency to get sideways in run defense and needs to square up better.

Final word: The comparison Watt will continue to see is Adam Carriker. The difference between the two, though, is that Watt is more diverse working off the line of scrimmage. He displays a solid array of moves to get into the back field. Has power and quickness, which makes him hard to get a handle on.

Has the look of a classic 3-4 defensive end because he has the strength to hold his place on the line. The only thing you have to question about Watt is his technique. As a former tight end at Central Michigan, he can be inconsistent in several areas of his technique.

Dan, Do you consider Watt a possible 4-3 DE?

Your write up mentions his 3-4 potential, but I wonder if you think he can be effective as a DE. Especially lining up against the Right Tackle.

A number of Lions fans are drooling over the thought of him next to Suh. I like some others better [C. Jordan and A. Smith] but would not freak out over a Watt selection at # 13.

Considering Watt played DE in a 4-3 at Wisconsin

I would have a hard time imagining him not being able to do the same exact position in the NFL.

I think he could potentially play a 4-3 DE, but the talent level in the NFL is different and based on his size he is best suited for a 3-4 DE.

based on his athleticism

he’s a better athlete then players 40lbs lighter then him.

If anything, I’d say his size says he could potentially play the 3-4 as a DE.

Is there a good player comparison out there for him?

I’ve seen his combine compared to Mario Williams’, but I’d like to know which, if any, 3-4 defensive end in the NFL Watt plays like.

Dream Texans Draft:
1. J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
2. Sam Acho, OLB, Texas
3. Sione Fua, NT, Stanford
4. Tyler Sash, S, Iowa
5. Chykie Brown, CB, Texas
6. Jerrod Johnson, QB, Texas A&M
7. Chas Henry, P, Florida

Justin Smith

Aaron Smith, maybe so that I don’t have to compare to all white people, I’d say Richard Seymour.

This guy’s a monster

Justin Smith is the exact comparison

When his name gets tossed around at NinersNation I end up drooling thinking of him across from Smith.

Gimme 1 round!

Didn't Watt have a 37" vert?

that’s pretty explosive right there. Not sure why no mention of 4-3, he’s really an ideal LDE given his speed and size.

Love the metal makeup of J J Watt

I have not seen a ton of film on J J Watt but the film I have seen is impressive. There are some players that you have that feeling about and Watt is one of those guys in this draft for me. Watt’s a football player and to use a scouts term - he looks good getting off the bus. Watt is mature beyond his years and according to his draft profile run on NFL Network has a charity in his name for youth in his area. Point is, if you draft this guy, you know you are getting a player that has his head on straight and will be in his playbook in addition to obvious talent on the field.

Watt is, without a doubt in my mind, the finest 5- technique player in this draft and I don’t think it is close. Watts is scheme diverse and should have no problems in 3-4 as 5, 4-3 as a strong side DE and I see the potential, because of his frame, to slide inside and rush the passer in nickle situations. J J Watt is a football player and whom ever gets this kid will be very fortunate. I see mutiple Pro Bowls in Watt’s future.

It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if J J Watt turns out to be a better player than D’Quan Bowers, a player projectied to go much higher in this Draft. Watt’s another defender that has Baltimore Raven written all over him.

Agreed, IMO he might be the safest player to take in this draft. He has everything you want. Production-check, Size-check, Measurables-freakish for his size so check, Motor- check, and one of the biggest thing is the love for the game. When your hear him talk you can tell he genuinely loves Football and will never lose the passion to work and get better. Whoever drafts him is going to get a player who is an absolute stud for years to come.
