Do the Buffalo Bills Need a Quarterback?

This is the time of the draft season where speculation takes over as we try to project team needs.  One team that has many needs but is in an interesting situation is the Buffalo Bills.  The Bills have had a rough couple of years but are hoping to get moving in the right direction.  Holding the #3 overall pick, the Bills have an opportunity to add a difference maker to their roster.  However, they might be in a bit of a pickle as they try to decide their plan of attack.  Mocking the Draft writer KillerKowal did a nice breakdown of the Bills Team Needs.  He identified rush linebacker, defensive line, and quarterback as the top needs.  At #3 the Bills will likely have the opportunity to add someone at either of those positions.  The question is, what position is more important to the Bills?  After the jump I am going to give some reasons why I feel the Bills should select a quarterback with the #3 pick.  I would love to hear some thoughts about this topic.

Star-divide

Ok, here is my argument for why the Bills should select a quarterback with the #3 pick. I feel it all starts with evaluating the talent available and building your draft board.  We can use my draft board as an example where I have Blaine Gabbert #12 and Cam Newton #13.  However, chances are that Buffalo's board looks very different then my rankings.  Next, I would start evaluating my roster and determining my immediate and future needs.  In order to make the best selection for the franchise, I would be honest with where my team is and decide if we have a real shot at competing right now.  In the Bills case they are several years away from contending for a playoff spot.  Lastly, I would consider financial considerations such as ticket and jersey sales.  Here is the list in order of importance to me ( I would like to see your list or maybe different things to consider):

1. Player Evaluation

2. Honest look at my franchise standing

3. Current and Future needs

4. Money

As I wrote this article, I got a decent sense about what NFL teams might go through before making a draft day selection.  I want to point out that I did not get any inside info about the thought process but determined this on my own opinion.  I will be working on getting some thoughts from someone closer to a team but for now this will have to do.

The Player Evaluation portion gave me my first opinion and I immediately thought, why would the Bills select #12 ranked player at #3?  Both Gabbert and Newton have potential but question marks, you can check out their Scouting Reports HERE.  There is also a growing group of 2nd round developmental quarterbacks.  The Bills can wait to select a quarterback until the 2nd or even 3rd round.  That player can then grow and learn under current quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.    Score- Drafting a QB- 0 Not Drafting a QB- 1

Next, I did a little research on the Bills and went back and watched a game or two.  I came away feeling that the team lacked talent but ultimately played really hard.  If they can keep their coaching staff in place and add some players at key positions a playoff run might be in their future.  However, the overall lack of talent at keys spots led me to the honest opinion that the Bills need to plan for the future. Score- Drafting a QB- 1 Not Drafting a QB- 1

Since I decided the Bills should be planning ahead the evaluation of future needs trumps current needs.  It is likely that at least one of two top quarterbacks will be available when the Bills pick at #3.  However, my evaluations lead me to believe that neither Gabbert or Newton are worthy of the #3 pick and are anything but sure fire franchise quarterbacks.  The key with each of these players is potential and both have much higher upside than current quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.  If you're planning for the future you might need to take a risk on a player with high upside.  The fact that the NFL is a quarterback driven league also plays into this decision.  If both Gabbert and Newton live up to their potential they could be Super Bowl winning quarterbacks.  A teams ultimate goal is winning Super Bowls which in my opinion gives the edge towards taking a quarterback at #3. Score- Drafting a QB- 2 Not Drafting a QB- 1

I hate to say it but money plays a big factor on draft day.  Teams such as the Bills who struggle with attendance and are tough to market on a national stage like to focus on creating a buzz.  No position creates more of a buzz than quarterback.  Selecting a quarterback with high potential will lead to more ticket and jersey sales.  Networks such as ESPN and blogs all over the Internet will be discussing your team.  Imagine the conversations that will be created if the Bills select Cam Newton.  Imagine the national TV coverage that will be created from that selection.  Unfortunately, this factor will play a role in what direction the Bills take at #3.  The money factor might be a little lower on the list than some of the others but it will still be considered. Score- Drafting a QB- 3 Not Drafting a QB- 1

This was a quick breakdown of the thought process that might go into your teams selection.  Based on the above breakdown I came to the conclusion that the Bills are should  select a quarterback at #3 overall.  However, there is still a possibility that the player evaluation factor will trump some of the others.  Going through this process completely changed my initial thoughts.  I still think that Buffalo could target a quarterback in the 2nd or 3rd round and improve other areas of the team.  I would to see some feedback.  I am completely off base w/ my factors?

I dont think the Bills should take a QB at number 3.

We need defensive help and lots of it. OLB’s ILB’s DE’s Corners,Safeties. We need to beef up the defense and then next year take a look at Luck,Barkely,Foles, etc.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

I voted NO.

I feel like there is better value for the Bills by choosing an outstanding defensive player at # 3. Dareus, Peterson, Fairley, Miller, or Bowers, could be long term star players for them.
The bottom line is how the Bills FO evaluates the QBs. If they have Newton or Gabbert in the top five, I think they have to take them. If they have them around # 10 or higher, like you, they should pass.

The second round QB options look pretty good; possibly Locker, Ponder, or Kaepernick. I think at least two of them will be there.

Then again there is a lot of defensive and other offensive talent available at # 35 that make another QB pass reasonable. Leave the QB until 2012?

I vote yes if that QB is Newton.

The Bills are in one of the toughest divisions in football. You may pick up a game or two a season against the Dolphins, but in any game against the Pats and Jets, you’re in danger of getting out-coached, and you’ll probably get out-talented. So you need a unique player at QB to get wins against those teams.

I think Newton’s best fit is in Buffalo, not for the financial (jersey sales) or fan support (attendance) ramifications of the pick but for schematic and situational reasons:
Chan Gailey is a great coach of quarterbacks. He turned a career backup (Fitzpatrick) into a legitimate starter and Gailey has, as you say, made the team play hard and relatively well despite an overall lack of talent. Gailey is also uniquely gifted in working with athletic quarterbacks. He is the guy that turned Kordell Stewart into a true #1 quarterback in Pittsburgh (albeit relatively briefly), and Tyler Thigpen flourished in KC under Gailey. I think that Newton couldn’t find a coach better suited to developing his talents and maximizing their effect on the field.

Also, while the Bills are generally untalented, they do have excellent running backs in C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. Having a quarterback that can take off and run off of boot-action is hugely beneficial for running backs because edge defenders have to honor their assignments and can’t collapse on the running backs. To put it another way, a running quarterback is to a running back what play action is to a throwing quarterback; just as play action freezes secondary defenders and opens bigger throwing lanes, so the threat of a QB draw or option play freezes box defenders and opens bigger running lanes.

For evidence of the advantage a running QB gives his running backs, you need only look to the success of CJ2K (who became CJ2K with Vince Young at QB), and the ATL running backs (Warrick Dunn) while Vick was under center, and the Steeler running backs while Kordell Stewart was under center.

A combination of Newton and Jackson/Spiller would be really exciting offensively, and could actually make them competitive because Gailey is creative enough to put them all to use.

For the record, I’m not a Bills fan, but I live in the area. I’d be thrilled if they picked Newton — because it would make the local broadcasts on Sundays worth my time!

Best case scenario for the top 6 picks:
1Car Dareus, 2Den Fairley, 3Buf Newton: 4Cin Jones 5Ari Gabbert 6Cle Bowers

As a Bills fan, I find this to be an interesting take that I haven’t heard much on yet. But you are correct, Newton could help us unlock CJ Spiller as a dynamite player – good point. So could Jake Locker for that matter.

you also got to consider

that Fitzy is a QB who doesn’t get enough credit for a being a guy who can hurt you with his legs and so if Gailey did want to develop an offense for Cam to transition into it wouldn’t be that difficult as Fitz would be able to run whatever it was Gailey would like Newton in two or three seasons.

Your Right and Wrong

Yes the Bills have running backs. The problem is that they could not even get a 1,000 yards last season out of one of them.

So were you are wrong is the thought of getting a QB whom can roll out.

How about trading down and getting multiple picks to shore up our offensive line and defensive.

Example:
Trade down with N.E. if we can to get their two number ones and a two.

Then draft JJ.Watt/DE and G.Carimi/ROT for our lines. In the third round also grab J.Moffitt/ROG.

Now we can get out running game going next year with a better talent offensiv eline along with Fitzpatrick having a more solid year with Evans/Parrish//Johnson/Nelson to throw to.

In 2012 draft we can worry about getting a qb A.Luck or M.Barkley to run things with the line, running game and receivers in place.

If the Bills grab a QB it will be foolish and another bad draft of needs that goes to waist. Terible move.

This is excellent analysis (rec'd)

And the very reason why I like Newton in Buffalo and not Carolina. I too have tremendous confidence in Chan Gailey to maximized a players strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. It’s called coaching. I would also like to see the Buffalo Bills become relavent again in the AFC East and knock the Patriots down a notch.

Look at gabbert and Cam Newton

I think more than anywhere Buffalo has a chance to make those two guys achieve their potential.
Buffalo has a guy in place who can be a serviceable starter and give these guys the veteran leadership and time to adjust that they need. Quarterbacks who have a year behind a starter I feel are more likely to succeed than the guys who come in to start day one. Take a guy like cam newton and redshirt him. From what I understand he is a guy who would potentially have some difficulty learning the play book and taking snaps from under center. The transition time would likely help him build the necessary reps to feel fully comfortable with the system. Towards the end of the season you can start playing him, and make him starter at the beginning of the next season.

Add to that, that you really do need a rockstar under center to go anywhere in this league and its starting to make more sense. Especially since both guys have the potential to be rockstars at the quarterback position.

This years draft is deep with dline and corners and other positions. Solid quarterbacking is much harder to find in later rounds.

That said adding a guy liek Bowers is hard to argue with.
And they likely wont improve a whole lot this year meaning they have a shot at one of the top quarterbacks next year who look to be better than this years crop.

Yes, the Bills should take a QB at no.3.....

that way, it will insure that one of those defensive studs will be available when the Titans pick at no.8.

My logic is actually pretty similar.

I want Patrick Petersen to be available at #7 for the 49ers. Please please please please please please please please please let this happen.

Voted NO!

With options in the second round in Ponder, Dalton and, maybe, Locker, there’s still a chance to improve the QB position without rolling the dice by picking Newton or Gabbert too early. Grab a true stud on the D-line, last years draft had only 1, BTW, and go home happy on Day 1. Play it right and you can improve with each pick, not just the first one.

Not sure their feelings on Gabbert or Newton

but unless Pat Peterson is on the board, this team can’t afford to keep beating around the bush with the QB spot.

Sure Newton and Gabbert might not be the best prospects, but it seemed Gailey got something out of Fitzpatrick, which says a lot.

This franchise needs to take a god damn risk already. Maybe these QBs are more risky then others, but how many years are they not going to go after a franchise QB, or at least make an attempt?

Its not like doing so or otherwise will set them back. They’re pretty far back as it is. Who the hell knows, maybe they actually strike gold on a QB?

Well, to be fair, if JP Losman (who they traded back into the first round for) had worked out, he’d still be the franchise QB today. They’ve taken lots of risks in terms of picks (Losman, 1st and 2nd; Rob Johnson, 1st and 4th; Drew Bledsoe, 1st), but none of those risks have paid off. It’s only very recently, with Fitzpatrick and Edwards, that they’ve taken the bargain route at QB. And each of those players (high pick or not) looked, for a short time, like they might be the answer before they ultimately collapsed.

I Like That

You ar enow using half your brain to think. The Bills did not a 1,000 yard rusher last year.
Why?
Offensive Line sucks.

So if we draft G.Carimi and J.Moffitt we can have four out five pieces in place to run the ball and have Fitzpatrick thro to Evans, Johnson, Parris and Nelson.

2011 Offensive Line:

LOT/BY Committee LOG/A.Levitre OC/E.Wood ROG/J.Moffitt ROT/Garimi

Next year we can go after A.luck or M.Barkley for the home run QB with the line in place and surrounding talent.

Just a side note. The Bills have a rabid fanbase and they only really struggled with attendance this year because the economy is down and it was pretty clear from the start that the team was going to be bad. Normally, the vast majority of games (except possibly the yearly Toronto debacle) are sold out.
Additionally, you can market pretty much any team (from a large or small city) if they’re good. Are the 49ers hard to market? Are the Dolphins hard to market? No. They just suck right now so your average ESPN-watcher doesn’t give a rat’s ass about them.

Even being a Jets fan..

I must say that Fitzpatrick is an above average qb……..I don’t understand why people downgrade him just because of his team and his popularity.

I voted no

Reason being is that we couldn’t stop a paraplegic from running all over us last year. Until this situation with the D is addressed and we can finally keep teams off the board and get offenses off the field it’s going to matter very little what QB we have calling plays. In this draft alone there are a bevy of immediate playmakers on defense that we could get with the #3 pick. Plus I hear all the time that the Bills could take Newton, or Gabbert with the 3rd pick and groom him to play in 2 or 3 years. Fundamental problem with this is that with a pick as high as #3 you need to draft someone who can contribute NOW, not 3 freakin years from now!

by gfbillsfan on Mar 25, 2011 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

I also voted no

The value and risk just isn’t worth it. There are a handful of quality QB prospects, but I’m not sure any of them are worth a top 3 pick. The fact that no QB is by far and away the #1 prospect says a lot about this draft class IMO.

Buffalo has a way of staying in games. With a better front 7, we might actually win those close games a little more often instead of giving it away. I’m really hoping Dareus is available for us in the first round. Get better against the run, better at collapsing the pocket, getting pressure on the QB and less of a “bend but don’t break” mentality. In the glory days, we had a great offense. But we also had a pretty solid defense with Bruce, Hansen, Biscuit and Talley. I’d like to see them get back to that and hope that we can land a Locker, Kaepernick or Ponder in round 2. That would create some excitement for us Bills fans… just as much if not more than going big with Newton at #3 overall. We can’t afford to miss on this pick. Not with this QB class.

I think we’re a lot closer to being a playoff contending team that a lot of people give us credit for. If we hit on our first couple of draft picks, that could be the tipping point. I love how Stevie is becoming a leader. I love Spiller’s potential. A healthy Poz and OLine, and we could surprise a lot of people. Cheers to keeping the faith after all these years!

Bills cannot afford to miss in the 1st again. They need a pass rush.

With that defense, you select the best defensive player available, which is Peterson or Dareus. Fitzpatrick is an ok player with a shit defense. get that defense half good and theres no telling how good he could be
