Phil Taylor NFL Draft Scouting Report
Phil Taylor
6'4, 340 pounds | Defensive tackle | Baylor
Pass rush: Many will be quick to classify Taylor as a nose tackle and assume that he has a limited pass rush. However, he possesses very good quickness and the ability to shoot the gap and penetrate. Taylor shows good strength and ability to push the pocket. However, inconsistent pad level and hand usage makes him a hit or miss on passing downs. In the NFL, he may not get many opportunities on 3rd downs as his value comes with this ability to stuff the run. However his quickness, ability to disengage, and strength give him a lot of pass rush potential.
Pursuit: For a big fella, Taylor shows the skills to effectively pursue the ball carrier. I have heard some label Taylor with having a poor motor but the games I viewed show the exact opposite. He works hard to get to the football and his quickness makes him a threat to make a play. His awareness and ability to find the ball is what makes him so effective in pursuit. He also maintains good balance through the play which allows him to remain on his feet and chase the ball.
Quickness: Taylor has surprising short area explosion that allows him to get off the ball quickly. That explosion also is apparent as he closes on the ball carrier. I have been really impressed with his lateral quickness and ability to slip past the offensive line. Overall, Taylor's combination of size and quickness make him a really impressive prospect.
Run defend: The size and strength of Taylor play an important role in his ability to stuff the run. At 340lbs, Taylor is the ideal size to fill the all important nose tackle position. He has a natural bend and strong base that he uses to anchor and hold strong at the point of attack. These skills and play on the field show me that he can be an effective 2 gap defender in the NFL. I would like to see him be more consistent keeping his pad level low and using his hands better. He has a tendency to get high as the play develops which limits his leverage. Taylor doesn't always get his hands inside and arms extended. He was able to get away with that in college but in the NFL those inconsistencies will hinder his effectiveness.
Strength: Taylor has great natural strength and a very strong base. He is thick through the lower half and that allows him to absorb contact and remain balanced. Taylor has heavy and violent hands which results in delivering a strong punch. Those heavy hands also allow him to control and disengage quickly.
Tackling: The ability to quickly locate the football allows Taylor to be in good position to make a play. That awareness permits him to get to the football quickly and balanced. As he approaches the ball carrier, he is under control and finishes the play with a pop.
Technique: I would like to see Taylor maintain a low pad level through the play but he has a tendency to get high as the play progresses. However, his natural bend and good balance counteract the high pad level from time to time. As the play begins, Taylor starts low and fires off the football and does a nice job keeping his feet underneath him. The majority of the time, Taylor gets his hands inside and arms extended. However, he needs to be more consistent in this area if he wants to be effective in the NFL.
Games Viewed: Oklahoma, Illinois, Texas
Final word: Taylor is flying up my draft board. The more I watch the more impressed I am of Taylor's potential. He is the ideal candidate to fill the nose tackle role in a 3-4 defense. However, his quickness and athletic ability makes him versatile and increases his overall value. Taylor has the ability to hold strong against the run and also rush the passer. If he can improve his stamina he could develop into a 3 down defensive lineman. Right now, I would have no problem taking Taylor in the middle of the 1st round.

Yes, I agree. I expect to see him taken as early as # 14 by the Rams.
I am no expert, but I believe he could be outstanding in a 4-3 scheme as well. There is an outside shot that Houston might take him for their NT also. Although # 11 seems a little high to me.

I honestly wouldnt have a problem with taking him for houston.
He is a guy who needs to be on our radar for sure.
If we could trade down a few spots and pick up an extra 4th at the least I would be pretty happy about it.
I think Taylor would be a great fit for the Seahawks DL
manning the 1-tech and 5-tech positions.

Chiefs fans that are crave a Vince Wilfork so bad they will fit a square peg in a round hole
Phil Taylor did best at penetrating one gap in his time at Baylor and when asked to anchor down and be a 2 gap style NT he was just good at doing it… in the big XII… where the football is thrown or ran to the outside and seldom up the gut.
This great NT prospect helped anchor the Baylor Bears defense to allowing 177.5 YPG rushing ranked 81st in the NCAA. Opposing offenses averaged almost 6 yards per play against this defense. And yes i know that the players around him aren’t great but a great NT should make the defense look much better against the run than 81st in the NCAA.

To go with that
the difference between Taylor and the 2nd-3rd round NTs do not seem that big. Either way, a NT is a 2 down player so I would rather have 3 down player in the first round.

People said Dorsey was a square peg being forced into a round hole
he turned out fine. Taylor fits what we need at NT. He can command double teams can find the ball carrier. It’s really the last piece of the puzzle. I believe he’s worth the 21st pick

Dorsey is a square peg in a round hole
And btw it took him 3 years to get to where he is a very good 3-4 DE. If he stayed in a 4-3 he had potential to be an all pro DT already. The last piece of our defensive puzzle? Because last time i checked the Ravens rushed the ball 40 times for only 3.6 ypc meanwhile they passed the ball at will on us.
No single player is the last piece and there never will be a last piece. Teams always have needs and Taylor fits a need for the Chiefs but he isn’t a 1st round talent. He is the best player at a huge position of need in this league. If he were a true 1st round talent he would go top 5 like BJ Raji did.
Crennel has done a great job his whole career getting the best out of D Lineman so i believe he could do as great of things with a NT drafted in the second or third.

A Stud NT
He takes up blockers and can get some penetration himself. this allows the QB less time to pass thus making our secondary look better and allows our LB to make plays. Therefore improving our whole defense. A solid NT improves our defense and takes it to the next level.

Did you just say a NT gets a pass rush?
Vince Wilfork has 9.5 sacks in 7 years in the nfl. What we need is a second pass rushing OLB to get more pass rush and a second LB or S that can cover tight ends. It was 3 or 5 step drops that they killed us with. Because Todd Heap made one move and he was wide open across the middle. A stud NT on passing downs does nothing, absolutely nothing. And we repeatedly held Baltimore to 3rd and 5’s yet there was todd heap and Flacco destroying our soft zone.

I've seen some tape of him breaking through the Lines
Not my point though. He can strengthen our pass rush just by purely taking up blockers consistently and he’s not bad in run defense either. A NT can make an average OLB good. It takes an Elite OLB to make an average NT look just above average. Finding an elite OLB in the draft is really hard as your converting 4-3 DE into 3-4 OLB who have to learn coverage skills and be able to accountable in run defense.

You still lost me with your weird logic.
But whatever if you want to believe that they double team NT’s on passing downs i’ll let you.

Raji was picked at # 9 in 2009.
Is Raji so much better than Taylor? I am not a Packer fan so I don’t know exactly what happened with Raji, but he did not really come on as a playmaker untill the second half of the 2010 season from what I remember.
But then I am a Lions fan.

Possible Chargers pick at 18
Chargers have both their starting and backup NTs signed in 2011; but this guy might be too intriguing to pass up. Could allow the current starting NT Antonio Garay to play the 5T.
I have tiger's blood.
If him or Paea falls to the Bengals pick in round 2 I'd be elated to get either.

I think He's getting some Dan williams type hype
Walter football had him going 9th, and I saw some just as high, yet he went in the mid 20’s. I expect Taylor to land in a similar area. He’s good, moves well for his size, but he’s beginning to be way over hyped by this community. His tape from Baylor is hardly stellar, and he’s benefited from being pretty much the only good NT prospect. I think a lot of you guys will be severely disappointed if you think your team is taking him before the 20’s, heck I would be surprised if he’s drafted before the last few picks of the first.
I could be wrong, but again, I think a lot of fans are over hyping him because they want an NT for the future and don’t care that its a reach. Don’t take this as an “I hate this guy” type thing, I really want him to be a Bronco, but I want him at good value.
If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.
agreed
He was a 3rd rounder before the senior bowl imo and after the senior bowl and combine i’d say he is definitely valued around pick 40. But i could see a team reaching for him in the late 1st.

There or Houston. He is perfect as a one gap NT.

You will have to make a very good case for a first round OT with Jerry.
As you must know, Jerry Jones does not take O Linemen in the first round. I really don’t know why you think he may change this year.
Doug Free, a fourth round pick, is looking very good at LT and I doubt you will draft a Tackle at # 9 to play on the Right side.

there are multiple reports
that are saying that Dallas has requested more film on Smith, plus he is the first player to be brought in for The Dallas interveiws….And bear in mind Jerry has said that Garrett has final say over the roster for what that is worth…..
"And one should bear in mind that there is nothing more difficult to execute, nor more dubious of success, nor more dangerous to administer than to introduce a new order to things; for he who introduces it has all those who profit from the old order as his enemies; and he has only lukewarm allies in all those who might profit from the new. This lukewarmness partly stems from fear of their adversaries, who have the law on their side, and partly from the skepticism of men, who do not truly believe in new things unless they have personal experience in them."
