Best Landing Spot for Blaine Gabbert

Blaine Gabbert is fighting to be the first quarterback selected in the 2011 NFL Draft. His rise up draft boards has put him in the position to be selected early.  However, is there a downside to rising to far up the draft board?  A lot of times quarterbacks are successful because of where they land and conversely fail because of their surroundings.  I always like to argue that JaMarcus Russell might have been a successful quarterback if he landed with a stable organization.  The same could be said for Alex Smith, who has been subjected to an unordinary amount of offensive systems and coaches.  The rest of this article I am going to take a look at what teams might be the best fit for a player like Blaine Gabbert.   I would love to see some feedback.  Let me know if you think Russell's career might have looked different if he landed with a different organization.

Star-divide

3. Washington Redskins- The Redskins football team is not oozing with talent but they do have one of the better offensive minds running the show.  Coach Shanahan has a history of developing quarterbacks and getting the most out of the available talent.  The concerns I have is that the offensive line is not great and the receiving corps leaves a lot to be desired.  The offensive line has some nice pieces such as Trent Williams but more talent is needed.  Overall, Gabbert to the Redskins would bring him the opportunity to learn under Mike Shanahan.  He would also be part of an organization that isn't afraid to spend money in an attempt to win.

2. Buffalo Bills- A lot of people might think I am crazy for including the Bills on the list of good fits for Gabbert.  However, this might be an attractive landing spot for several reasons including the presence of Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Gabbert is anything but NFL ready and the opportunity to sit behind a quarterback like Fitzpatrick will give him the time to learn and develop.  Fitzpatrick has often been described as a good teammate and smart football player both qualities that will make him a great mentor.  Nobody should overlook the fact that Chan Gailey is the head coach because he has a good history of developing young quarterbacks.  Gabbert's athletic ability will be utilized by Gailey's offensive mind.

1. San Francisco 49ers- This is no doubt the best landing spot for a young quarterback looking to land in a positive situation.  The 49ers just spent big bucks and committed to Coach Harbaugh who is responsible for the development of college quarterback Andrew Luck.  Harbaugh is a former NFL quarterback that has a good feel for the position.  His offensive system will be friendly to a young quarterback looking to develop as it employs a heavy running attack coupled with play action.  If Gabbert lands in San Francisco he also needs to thank Mike Singletary who used two 1st round selections to sure up the offensive line.  The line features promising young players like Mike Iupati, Joe Staley, and Anthony Davis.  Nothing is concrete but it is looking more and more likely that Alex Smith will be returning for another season in San Francisco.  Smith would be a good mentor and tale of caution for a young quarterback.  You also can not overlook the other surrounding talent including a strong running game featuring Frank Gore.

And either deal with 2 of the most dysfunctional WR's in the NFL

or have little talent at WR if they are not brought back? No offense, but from Gabbert’s point of view, I don’t think the Bengals are a desirable landing spot.

Who does the Redskins at WR

or the Bills.
Come on now.

He’s got Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham too.

Shanny has had QB's put up good numbers

with less then stellar talent. It all revolves around the run game with boots and PA off of it. I think Gabbert can run that O

it’s best landing spots for Blaine not possible landing spots… More geared towards best for player not for team

WCO wouldn't be a good landing spot for him?

We just brought in a new OC (Jay Gruden) and Wr coach (James Urban) from the eagles.
Two guys who come from pretty respectable coaching tree’s.

Bengals are looking to completely retool their offense. And I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Cincy is a better fit then Buffalo.

I would argue Minny could be the best

kinda like a Sanchez situation where as long as he doesn’t F up he can coast to the conference finals game.

I like your list though, not so big on Buffalo but I think Washington is good, Shanny knows how to handle young QB’s, and SF is good with Harbaugh.

It would suck if it wasn;t top 10

but I can see Minny make the trade into the top 10 for him, possibly to Clevelands 6 to snag him right before SF and Tenn

Arizona is probably best for him

I mean who wouldn’t want to throw to Larry Fitz? Breaston and Doucet are solid as well.

2nd I’d say SF given that Harbaugh seems to be a dude that will get the most out of a QB (TBD of course) and also with Crab, Davis, a power running game with a young OL, that’s a good spot too

I would not want to go to Buffalo tho they may be the team that likes him the best.

Overall if I was any of these teams I wouldn’t draft Gabbert until the 2nd.

No telling how long Gailey might last in Buffalo

1 or 2 years, maybe 3

Plus a D for the Niners.

I don’t see how the Cards are better. They don’t have an O-Line and their D isn’t anything to write home about.

neither team is winning now with Blaine Gabbert at QB

largely he’s a gump. But I say the Cards cuz of Fitz, nothing else.

Couple of things that would have let the Niners into the playoffs.

A slide by Clements would have won the Atlanta game.
A non-prevent defense against the Panthers or the Saints game would have won those.
An offense that doesn’t run it up the gut on 1st and 2nd down then throw it on third down.
A defense and offense that doesn’t go into prevent mode once they are up by a touchdown.

Pretty much but we have a pretty good situation for a rookie QB.

We have a D, a RB, and a young O-Line.

I would love to see him come to the Titans....

of course, I’m a little bias, but with VY gone….it would be a place where he could come in and show the NFL why he deserved to go so high.

I think Washington because of Shanahan's offense.

The play-action and roll-out offense would suit him. Athletic and accurate, with some shakiness in reads and poise, exacerbated by the spread transition.

You know Shanny pretty well

Yes that’s why I think Gabbert would be a good fit there.

Redskins

Can’t honestly say for sure but I am a Redskins Fan and would love to pick him up at the #10 spot. He would be learning under Shanny and would have an owner who would spend the money to get the players he needs. HTTR!!!

I would love him in KC

We got Cassel and Tyler Palko…….

Russell wouldn't have been successful anywhere.

He was protected by Lane Kiffin’s run 70% of the time and solid ZBS scheme and was brought along verrrrry slooooowly his first year despite the amount of money he held out for. He showed he was fat and out of shape and wouldn’t have put in the work to get better. Look at how Bruce Gradkowski was considered a God send by comparison once Oakland benched him. As for Blaine Gabbert, best landing spot would be a team with an aging QB in a good system somewhere in the 20-32 range much like Aaron Rodgers.

It's true.

My boss’ brother-in-law is a former NFL player for 2 teams and he invites my boss to a football camp for under-priveleged kids each summer. So my boss has been able to chat briefly with a few guys, and a couple were Raiders.

Aside from their staunch defense of Al Davis as a really nice guy who goes out of his way to take care of his players, they noted how clear it was that Russell was going to fail, from the beginning. Did not take to coaching. Slept in team meetings. Deliberately. Complete disregard for conditioning.

Alex Smith, though, you have to wonder. Could he have succeeded elsewhere.

Being a Cardinal would be best

Best recievers of the group, not the best fit for san fran’s new west coast system.

with that O-line.
