Updated 2011 NFL Mock Draft

The 2011 NFL Draft is only a few weeks away which means teams are finalizing their boards and spreading some false information.  It is at this point of the draft season where we hear tons of stories about teams scheduling workouts and other information intended to mislead other franchises.  This information will impact a lot of mock drafts.  Below is my latest mock with some adjustments but likely little surprises.  Keep coming back the next 3 days as I will post the 2nd roundWednesday, 3rd round Thursday, and team grades Friday.  As always be sure to check out our Scouting Reports for the most in depth info on each prospect..

1. Carolina Panthers (2-14)- Cam Newton- QB- Auburn

- Unless an offer to trade down presents itself it appears likely Newton will be the selection. Newton will give the Panthers a player with tremendous upside.  However, this pick may take several years to pay off as Newton is anything but a finished product. It is still possible that the Panthers go defense with this selection.

2. Denver Broncos (4-12)- Marcell Dareus- DT- Alabama

- Dareus's versatility is what makes him a good fit for this position.  The Broncos need a  lot of help in the interior of the defensive line.  Dareus has the ability to either penetrate the pocket or stuff the run.

3. Buffalo Bills (4-12)- Von Miller- OLB- Texas A&M

- Miller has game changing potential with the ability to get after the quarterback.  Buffalo could go in several different directions but Miller might be the safest pick.  I get the feeling that Buffalo is completely comfortable with Ryan Fitzpatrick at the quarterback position.

4. Cincinnati Bengals (4-12)- Blaine Gabbert- QB- Missouri

- Bengal fans are hoping that the organization heads come to the realization that Carson Palmerwill never play for the Bengals again.  If thats the case Gabbert would mean the future at the quarterback position.  The NFL is all about quarterback play.

5. Arizona Cardinals (5-11)- Patrick Peterson- CB- LSU

- The Cardinals are sitting in a tough spot here because both top quarterbacks are off the board.  Von Miller is also a likely target but he is also got at this point.  However, all is not lost because Peterson might be the best overall talent in this draft class.

Star-divide

6. Cleveland Browns (5-11)- Da'Quan Bowers- DE- Clemson

- Bowers is still under the spotlight because of concerns over a knee injury.  However, he has the potential to anchor the Browns defensive line for years. Cleveland is switching to a 4-3 defense but lacks the proper pieces and  adding Bowers would be a great starting point.

7. San Francisco 49ers (6-10)- Robert Quinn- OLB/DE- North Carolina

- The 49ers defense has a lot of great talent but they struggled to generate a consistent pass rush.  The addition of Quinn might be the missing piece to take this defense to the next level.

8. Tennessee Titans (6-10)- Nick Fairley- DT- Auburn

- Fairley is on a bit of a slide but he would be a steal here for the Titans.  Tennessee could use someone that is able to penetrate the pocket and create pressure in the backfield.

9. Dallas Cowboys (6-10)- Tyron Smith- OT- USC

- Dallas has problems along their offensive line especially at tackle.  Smith has the ability to step in right away and start at right tackle with the potential to develop into a left tackle.  Smith's athletic ability combined with his balance make him the top tackle prospect in this class.

10. Washington Redskins (6-10)-  A.J. Green- WR- Georgia

- At this point, Green represents great value at a position of need.  Washington has a need at the wide receiver position and Green is a potential gamebreaker.  This selection will help the upcoming transition at the quarterback position.

11. Houston Texans (6-10)- Prince Amukamara- CB- Nebraska

- The Texans secondary is among the worst in the NFL so this pick makes a ton of sense.  Amukamara has top 10 talent combined with excellent technique.  He would be an immediate upgrade over the current players on the roster.

12. Minnesota Vikings (6-10)- Julio Jones- WR- Alabama

- Sidney Rice is a potential free agent and we saw last year what his presense on the field means to the Vikings.  Jones gives Minnesota another big bodied wide receiver that will open things up underneath for Percy Harvin.

13. Detroit Lions (6-10)- J.J. Watt- DE- Wisconsin

- This Lions team has made strides but still has a lot of holes to fill before they can make a playoff run.  They could look to address the offensive line but at this point Watt represents more value.  Watt will add another talented player to what could be a dominating defensive line.

14. St. Louis Rams (7-9)-  Aldon Smith- DE/OLB- Missouri

- Unfortunately both AJ Green and Julio Jones are off the board so St. Louis needs to go in a different direction.  Aldon Smith represents someone with the potential to develop into a dominate pass rusher.  However, there is still a lot of questions surrounding what position is the best fit.

15. Miami Dolphins (7-9)- Mark Ingram- RB- Alabama

- No matter who the quarterback is in Miami they will need to depend on a solid running game.  Both Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown are declining so adding Ingram would help rejuvenate the running game.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8)- Justin Houston- DE/OLB- Georgia

- Jacksonville is still looking to solve their pass rushing struggles and Houston is a pass rushing specialist.  The fact that he weighed in at 270lbs and showed a strong lower half has me feeling comfortable about him playing defensive end.

17. New England Patriots (from Oakland 8-8)- Cameron Jordan- DE/DT- California

- Jordan is a great fit for New England's defensive scheme at the 5 technique position.

18. San Diego Chargers (9-7)- Muhammad Wilkerson- DE/DT- Temple

- There are more than a handful of teams looking to upgrade at the 5 technique position and San Diego is among that group.  Wilkerson possesses the ideal skills to fill that role and contribute early in his career.

19. New York Giants(10-6)- Gabe Carimi- OT- Wisconsin

- The Giants offensive line is aging and becoming less effective.  This unit needs an infusion of youth and talent which Carimi represents.  Carimi could be a dominate right tackle and fit in the Giants run first scheme.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-6)- Brandon Harris- CB- Miami

- The secondary for the Bucs is a major question mark with the recent off the field issues for Aqib Talib impacting the depth.  Harris has the ablity to contribute early and has a clean off the field history.

21. Kansas City Chiefs (10-6)- Mike Pouncey- G/C- Florida

- The running game was a major factor in the Chiefs playoff run and that continued success is dependent on the offensive line.  Pouncey has the potential to be a very good interior offensive lineman and help keep the arrow pointing up.

22. Indianapolis Colts (10-6)- Anthony Castonzo- OT- Boston College

- Peyton Manningstruggled a little last season when he was faced with pressure.  Castonzo is an athletic tackle that excels in pass protection.

23. Philadelphia Eagles (10-6)- Jimmy Smith- CB- Colorado

- I can see the Eaglesgoing in any number of directions depending if there is a free agency period and how it shakes out.  Either way the cornerback position is an area of need and Smith represents a player with high upside.

24. New Orleans Saints (11-5)- Corey Liuget- DT- Illinois

- This pick is more about best player available than need.  However, Liuget would give the Saints a tackle that can penetrate but also hold up against the run.

25. Seattle Seahawks (7-9)- Ryan Mallett- QB- Arkansas

- The Seahawksare looking very closely at every available quarterback option.  If a new CBA is not in place by the draft they may need to use their first pick on a quarterback.  Mallett possesses a big arm and Pete Carroll isn't the type of person to be scared off by some personality question marks.

26. Baltimore Ravens (12-4)- Nate Solder- OT- Colorado

- The offensive line started to show some weaknesses last season with injuries taking there toll.  Solder may needs some time to develop but he has great potential.

27. Atlanta Falcons (13-3)- Ryan Kerrigan- DE/OLB- Purdue

- John Abraham is starting to wear down but his pass rushing presence has been a major factor in the Falconssuccess.  All the teams that sustain success do so by planning ahead.

28. New England Patriots (14-2)- Brooks Reed- OLB- Arizona

- Reed is a fast rising prospect and would give the Patriots another pass rushing option off the edge.  The Pats have a ton of early selections so they have a shot to really bring in some impact players.

29. Chicago Bears (11-5)- Danny Watkins- G- Baylor

- This pick could be prime real-statefor a team looking to move back into the first round.  At this point all the top tackles are off the board but the interior of the line stil needs help.

30. New York Jets (11-5)- Phil Taylor- NT- Baylor

- This would be a dream scenario for the Jets.  Taylor is the best nose tackle in this draft and would fill a position of need for the Jets.  Taylor has the potential to really develop into a game changing defensive tackle.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4)- Steven Paea- DT- Oregon State

- Casey Hamptonis getting up there in age and Paea has the ability to step in and take some snaps.  Pittsburgh could go in several different directions including offensive line.

32. Green Bay Packers (10-6)- Adrian Clayborn- DE- Iowa

- Green Bay is looking at some turnover at the defensive end position and Clayborn can bring some depth and talent.

Justification for Carimi over Castonzo?

I’m curious to see how scouts contrast the two. The BC connection seems to be repeatedly linking Castonzo to NYG.

by Mike Fiammetta on Apr 12, 2011 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

is BC connection any reason to take one player over the other?

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

Of course not

I’ve just seen Castonzo linked to NY more and was wondering why Carimi here

by Mike Fiammetta on Apr 12, 2011 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

probably cuz many think Carimi's better then Castanzo

which I think too.

ALso Castanzo can’t run block, Carimi can. Giants can get any LT to pass block (see: Diehl, David), but run blocking to the left side was a problem.

Pretty much

Carimi is better. I think he’s alot better, and would be one of the Chargers targets at 18.

Carimi is a better run blocker and the giants love to run the football.

JJ watts doesn't fit in detroit

He is a good player but the Lions need ends that are up field rushers. Watts isn’t that type of player… The Lions would be more interested in a Bowers or Quinn or Aldon Smith mold… The 3-4 ends like Watts and Cameron Jordan and Cameron Heyward don’t fit detroits system on all 3 downs as they aren’t those type of players (with Cameron Jordan showing the most edge abilities)….in the Lions style they need ends that are gonna get sacks and caused fumbles….those above listed 3-4 ends just are not those type of players…they are really good. But not a fit for Detroits system.

by Shankdiddy on Apr 12, 2011 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

21 TOL, 7 sacks , 3 forced fumbles and 3 blocked kicks

The guy is 6’6" and 290 he fits any system, and pretty much is the definition of what a 3 down player is

Not a good scheme fit

Watt (I’m a big Badger fan) isn’t that upfield speed rusher that Detroit should want. Watt is a far better fit as a 34 DE. As much as I love Watt, he isn’t the upfield speed guy they want…

This

I’m not a Badger fan but a J J Watt fan. I thiink this guy is an ideal 5-technique.with his long arms to lock out defenders while locating the ball plus his wingspan to disrupt the passing lanes is another trait.

by Ravens One on Apr 13, 2011 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Watt is an ideal fit for a 5 tech but that doesnt mean he is not a fit as a LDE. He could fit in either scheme.

For sure

If 3 blocked kicks doesnt mean versatile I’m not sure what does. Special teamer, versatile and good tackler, all adds up to beast. Was the reason I wanted the Chargers to draft Clay in 09, and McCourty in 2010; and now I want Watt in 2011. When are people going to open their eyes, and see scheme versatility equals beast. And beast transcends scheme

Nobody said he couldn't...

He can play in either front… But he isn’t ideal in a 43, like he is a 34. And I don’t think he has the upfield pass rush you want in a 43 DE.

As i said before...JJ watts is a very good player...but his skill sets don't meet the Lions system

The Lions won’t draft a guy that doesn’t have a clear defined 3 down role on defence. The Lions want ends that their main asset is the push the edge..speed rushers…JJ watts is good, but he isn’t that type of player. I really don’t see how you can deny this fact. Not saying he isn’t good…he just doesn’t fit Detroits system. A better choice would be Aldon Smith or if Quinn was there or if Da Quan Bowers….even Cam Jordan has some Utility in that role…just not JJ watts. They did a big special on this very subject last night on NFL network detailing how teams need to ensure that the ends they are picking have a 3 down role …and THEY ALL agreed that JJ WATTS ISN’T a 4-3 end.

Speaking of the Giants...a prospect that the Giants are considering @ 19 doesn't even show up

No love for Akeem Ayers, Jon?

Final Dream Draft

1) Akeem Ayers, OLB
2) Marvin Austin, DT
3) Jake Kirkpatrick, OC
4) Chimdi Chekwa, CB
6) Henry Hynoski, FB
6) Jarriel King, OT
6) Josh Bynes, ILB
7) Ricardo Lockette, KR/PR

by BigBlueIntervention on Apr 12, 2011 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

Akeem is out of consideration from now on BBI.

Just joshin’ with you but I’m not heavily in his camp, this LB class has to be the worst its been in recent memory, even Von Miller isn’t a lock to me and in most other years isn’t a top 15 pick because of his shortcomings. He’s no Derrick Thomas and Akeem Ayers is no Julian Peterson. I gotta go in another direction and it wouldn’t be Gabe Carimi either. I’m taking Pouncey and calling it a great day one.

Yeah whats up with Ayers Dove?

This is another guy that I think is really good. Watt, Carmini, Ayers/ Jordan, and Wilkerson. Hopefully the Chargers pick in the order.

AJ Green would be great there

but if this turns out anything like my dream draft i think we’ll get him in the 2nd.

Redskins Dream Draft:
•Round 1, pick 10 (10 overall) Patrick Peterson
•Round 2, pick 9 (41 overall) A.J. Green
•Round 5, pick 13 (144 overall) Von Miller
•Round 5, pick 24 (155 overall, from New Orleans) Mark Ingram
•Round 6, pick 12 (177 overall) Phil Taylor
•Round 7, pick 11 (213 overall) Julio Jones
•Round 7, pick 22 (224 overall, from Indianapolis) Mike Pouncey
•Round 7, pick 52 (253 overall, compensatory selection) Cam Newton
I DID SAY IT WAS A DREAM DRAFT!!!

I really don't think the Seahawks will draft Mallett.

He’s just not a good fit for their offense, even with the new O-coordinator.

by Coach Owens on Apr 12, 2011 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know what kind of QB Pete wants

but it looks like we’re taking a pretty close look at Mallett. It could be a smoke screen or an attempt to cross him off our list but it looks like we might be interested in the guy. I think the only certain thing about the QB position is that no once can be certain what we’ll do.

I voted yes

So hopefully he’ll be off the board long before the Vikes are on the clock!

you were wrong about Ingram to Miami before

and now it seems stubborness plays out. Quarentee phins dont draft a rb at 15 now if trading back to 28 maybe Ingram is the pick there

2 new rbs for 2011. Ryan Williams and DeMarco Murray???? I like. If we can trade down in first and get a 2nd or another 3rd *wink*

FINALLY

A mock draft that makes sense for the Chiefs. Love the Pouncey pick. Everyone keeps choosing P. Taylor but I don’t think he is at all what the Chiefs would be looking for. I have not chosen Pouncey myself because in each of mine he is off the board, but if this were to happen I’d be very happy.

by Nick_Keith on Apr 12, 2011 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

I voted no

Cam Newton would be a perfect fit in Buffalo with Chan Gailey.

Chan took Tyler Thigpen and made a reasonable offense out of him.
He would have a field day with Cam’s abilities

You are all over it

If I had to pick one coach to develop Newton—— Chan Gailey would be the guy. Under ideal circumstances, Fitzpatrick would remain the starter until week 8 or 9 ala Josh Freeman and then Cam Newton would take over the reigns.

by Ravens One on Apr 12, 2011 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a mixed bag

Don’t like Newton in Carolina. The stars do seem to aligning that way, however. Bowers will slide out of top 10 now. 16 is too high for Justin Houston. Houston is more of a late 1st Rd. type.18 is a little high for Wilkerson too. I like Wilkerson or Phil Taylor in KC.

As desperate as the Seahawks are for a QB, I say there’s no way they take Mallet in Rd. 1. That would be a major reach in my oipinion.

by Ravens One on Apr 12, 2011 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

Paea will not be a NT for the Steelers

Cowboys or texans maybe but not the Steelers. You got to have massive weight to go with massive strength 291 just doesn’t count it.

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

by Steel in FL on Apr 12, 2011 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

where'd you get 291?

everywhere ive seen has him at 305 range. and with a few years behind Hampton he’ll have plenty of time to add more weight. ive been thinking about Paea for a while now im starting to like it. glad someone else is on board.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Apr 13, 2011 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Hampton is listed at 325

Which I highly doubt. he probably weighs more. That’s 20 pounds just to come up to Hampton’s listed weight. Not to mention Paea is a penetrating D-line. When was the last time we saw Hampton blow up a play in the backfield? A penetrating NT would be nice but as I understand them NT’s primary task is to ocuupy blockers. I just don’t see Paea having the body mass to play NT for us.

Paea

Is already as strong as he can probably get. Even if he’s 305 he would be very light for NT in Pitts defense! They like the Packers want a NT that goes 340+ like Raji or Hampton. He won’t be able to get nearly that size w/o significant loss of his quickness. He would just be fat… And Paea probably wouldn’t know how to play that strict power game. Its complete different than how he’s played his entire career.

steelers

I get the point everyone is making about Paea not being a perfect fit. However, there isnt a ton of players that weight 330lbs+ that play at Hampton’s level. Sometimes defenses need to make adjustments to the players they have available.

No way Harris to Bucs

Even without Talib the secondary is still way better than the DE’s we have. MAYBE if all the good DE’s are gone they would go with CB if it was BPA. Talib was injured last year and our pass defense did not slip off that much. IF the draft went this way the Buc’s would take Ryan Kerrigan.
