2011 NFL Mock Draft

This isn't anything special, just a mock draft. Would like y'all's take on it. I'm too lazy to fill in analysis on every pick, but I will on some, maybe half of them.

1. Carolina (2-14) Cam Newton- Regardless of Mel Kiper's love affair with him, Jimmy Clausen will NOT pan out.
2. Denver (4-12) Marcell Dareus- Champ Bailey was re-signed, so Denver can wait a few years to address CB.
3. Buffalo (4-12) Von Miller- Need a pass rusher.
4. Cincinnati (4-12) Blaine Gabbert- Palmer is not ever going to be in a Bengals uniform again, so they need a QB.
5. Arizona (5-11) A.J. Green- BPA. Even Rex Grossman could have a good year with Green and Fitzgerald.
6. Cleveland (5-11) Da'Quan Bowers- Injury is a concern, but his talent can't be overlooked.
7. San Francisco (6-10) Patrick Peterson
8. Tennessee (6-10) Nick Fairley- Babin and Morgan are solid on the outside, so they need a DT.
9. Dallas (6-10) Tyron Smith- Dallas needs to protect Tony Romo with more success.
10. Washington (6-10) Julio Jones- BPA and need help at WR.
11. Houston (6-10) Robert Quinn- Houston needs an explosive edge rusher to go along with Connor Barwin.
12. Minnesota (6-10) Prince Amukamara- An aging Antoine Winfield needs a future replacement.
13. Detroit (6-10) Aldon Smith- Would pair very nicely with Suh.
14. St. Louis (7-9) Corey Liuget- Need to replace an aging Fred Robbins.
15. Miami (7-9) Mark Ingram
16. Jacksonville (8-8) J.J. Watt- Watt can play as a 4-3 DE, and can provide pressure off the edge, or in the middle(if needed).
17. New England (from Oakland 8-8) Anthony Castonzo
18. San Diego (9-7) Muhammed Wilkerson
19. New York Giants (10-6) Mike Pouncey
20. Tampa Bay (10-6) Cameron Jordan

21. Kansas City (10-6) Phil Taylor- Could also give Akeem Ayers a look, but they need a potentially dominant NT in Taylor.
22. Indianapolis (10-6) Nate Solder
23. Philadelphia (10-6) Jimmy Smith
24. New Orleans (11-5) Adrian Clayborn
25. Seattle (7-9) Jake Locker- They need a QB. Pretty simple.
26. Baltimore (12-4) Justin Houston- The thought of Suggs and Houston coming off both edges is scary.

27. Atlanta (13-3) Brandon Harris- Atlanta needs help at CB. Brent Grimes had a fairly good season, but Dunta Robinson showed why he got massively overpaid.
28. New England (14-2) Akeem Ayers- New England needs a very athletic, smart OLB like Ayers.
29. Chicago (11-5) Gabe Carimi- Chicago needs help all over the O-Line, and this is a start.
30. New York Jets (11-5) Ryan Kerrigan- The Jets need a pass rushing OLB, and they get that with Kerrigan.
31. Pittsburgh (12-4) Cameron Heyward- Steelers need a replacement for the aging Aaron Smith.
32. Green Bay (10-6) Brooks Reed- Would hopefully draw attention away from Clay Matthews.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

Watt would not play DT in our 43 and would be a LDE. Jordan could be a RDE, but I think he will be a LDE in our scheme. Jordan is better than Watt so I agree with you here.

by Jags.0 on Apr 17, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw Jordan as more of a 4-3 DT.

He may be listed as a DE, but a lot of film on him shows that he plays quite a bit of DT.

However, he’s probably the most versatile defensive player in the draft. 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE, 4-3 DT, and could play 3-4 OLB. He did do some stand-up rushing from the edge at CAL.

Watt just looked a bit better coming off the edge than Jordan did. I think Jordan is ultimately going to be a 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE. His technique against the big OGs is flawless.

However, I put him at the Bucs, simply because they need some edge rushers, and Jordan can do that, but I still think his strength is at DT. He looked unblockable while playing there.

I gave Watt to you guys mainly because I saw Jordan as a 4-3 DT, and since you guys just drafted Alualu, I thought a guy like Watt would fit at RDE or LDE better than Jordan would.

No, you are misunderstanding.

Jordan can be a good edge rusher, but I think his main strength is as a 4-3 DT. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a good 4-3 DE.

Like I said, he’s the most versatile player in the draft, maybe excluding Patrick Peterson.

And Kerrigan's stock is dropping.

Or so I’ve heard.

I also watched film on the guy, and wasn’t that impressed.

Where have you heard Kerrigans stock is dropping?

I dont think there is anyway he doesnt go in the first.

by Yankees10 on Apr 17, 2011 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Lot of the early mocks had him in the top 15,

now he’s projected to go in the 20s.

The main reason is that he’s not a versatile player. Very one-dimensional.

Kerrigan is inconsistent, but I would spend a late first round pick in him. He has a good motor.

by Jags.0 on Apr 17, 2011 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The Jaguars need “some edge rushers” too.

by Jags.0 on Apr 17, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That's why I put Watt there.

Watt looked good coming off of the edge at Wisconsin, while Jordan played a lot of DT. Like I said to Pirate25, it doesn’t mean Jordan can’t be a good edge rusher, I just think his strength would be as a 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT.

Well, ok.

I’m not going to argue against it. You guys know the Jags better than I do.

no we know our perception of what the Jags would draft

for all we know Watt is much higher regarded by the GM and he is the pick

by Jagsrok9008 on Apr 18, 2011 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Jordan is a better prospect. You are supposed to mock what you think teams will do, not what you would do.

by Jags.0 on Apr 17, 2011 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you can do either

Got me there.

I did use my bias of players on certain picks.

Ravens

How do we need help at CB? That is completely inaccurate and Harris would not be a good fit for us. We need more help with the pass rush or OT, so Houston or Carimi would be a lot better.

by AV23 on Apr 17, 2011 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

Woops.

Got ATL and BAL mixed up.

BAL needs Houston, and ATL needs Harris. Don’t know why I did that.

Thanks for the catch.

Thank you. Houston would look really good opposite Suggs.

by AV23 on Apr 17, 2011 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Atlanta does not have CB need

They signed Dunta Robinson last year and Grimes went to the Pro Bowl.

by ct17 on Apr 17, 2011 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

This is coming from a life-long Texans fan:

Dunta Robinson is TERRIBLE. He got massively overpaid to go to ATL.

His last year as a Texan, he allowed the most TDs in the NFL, and he was called for the most Pass Int. calls.

Believe me, he is easily the most overrated player in the NFL. Everyone on BRB or in Houston in general, will agree with me.

Everyone outside of Houston thinks he’s good because he had a good rookie season and decent second year. Believe me when I say he’s terrible. If teams knew how bad he was, he’d be competing for the Nickel CB job. He doesn’t deserve to start.

Really? Watkins to the Jets?

Not only does this guy not belong in the first but THE JETS CANNOT GO OLINE IN THE FIRST.

by JetKing55 on Apr 17, 2011 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

You guys have some holes on the O-Line.

Especially at LG. I know Ducasse is supposed to fill that hole, but he didn’t have the greatest season rookie season, or so I’ve read. The RG situation isn’t as bad, but it’s needs to be addressed.

Who would you have the Jets take at that spot? And what’s wrong with addressing the O-Line?

by bone31crusher on Apr 17, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Ducasse is being moved to RT

Woody is aging and may be a salary casualty to resign Holmes/Edwards/Cromartie.

A season on the bench is not bad for a guy playing at a much higher level than he did at UMass.

While I think LG unlikely, it is not unreasonable. A lot depends on their comfort level with their free agents.

Colts

Not a fan of Solder over Carimi. Carimi is more pro-ready and has the ability to play either side of the line. Plus, Polian loves Big Ten players.

Solder is more of a project. The Colts are in a win-now mentality.

"Solder is more of a project. The Colts are in a win-now mentality."

True.

I based that pick off of the handful of Colts fans over at our blog(Battle Red Blog), that picked Solder over Carimi.

They are all heavy Carimi over anybody else.

31. Pittsburgh (12-4) Cameron Heyward- Steelers need a replacement for the aging Aaron Smith.

His name is Ziggy Hood and he is already on the team. I like the pick, but I don’t like the explanation.

Brett Keisel’s eventual replacement? Either way, I like the pick

A long way from Pittsburgh PA, in fact, 8653.2 miles to be precise. My blood still bleeds black and gold like the rest of Steeler Nation, proud fan since 2002.

BTSC's token Kiwi fan. That means I'm a New Zealander. Yes, that small country next to Australia....no we are not part of Australia

by Michael Hewitt on Apr 17, 2011 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

I thought you guys could use some more depth at the position.

Heyward is probably the BPA anyway.

by bone31crusher on Apr 17, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

DE is probably our deepest position

Although, half of those guys are on the wrong side of 30 (Smith, Keisel, and Eason). I would be fine with this pick, although it is not as sexy to me as the idea of a OT or CB. He could very well be BPA though.

I think Heyward would be a 3-4 RDE

Replacing Keisel here. It all depends on the medical evaluation of his beard-growing ability.

The Jets have holes in the middle of their O-Line, excluding Mangold of course.

No they don’t.
Matt Slauson isn’t amazing, but he’s solid, just needs to cut down on the penaltys a bit. Brandon Moore is one of the most underrated linemen in the league, plays at a Pro Bowl level and still has a few good years left in him. The only way I see us going O-line in the first round is if Smith or Carimi somehow fall to us.

Oh yes that's right, I'm a Jets fan.

by Bob_The_Friendly_Baker on Apr 17, 2011 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

I heard Slauson was rather mediocre.

Well, since I appear to be getting a lot of hate for the Watkins pick, what do you think the pick should have been?

Ahh

Forgot about the Jets need at OLB.

My bad.

by bone31crusher on Apr 17, 2011 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

And Slauson was by no means mediocre.

He is going to be so much better, its his second year after being a seventh rounder. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the Pro Bowl along with Dbrick in a year or two from now.

by JetKing55 on Apr 17, 2011 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

If we for some stupid reason go Oline in the first, it will be a tackle.

by JetKing55 on Apr 17, 2011 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Give the Patriots Heyward over Ayers.

Ayers is not a good player for the Patriots. Can’t stop the run, gets washed out and he’s not worth a first round pick by the Patriots.
