Rhett's Mock 15.0

I know I already had my "last mock" and a "real last mock", but I'm too excited, I put a lot of thought into each pick.  Enjoy!

Star-divide

Round 1

  1. Carolina (2-14) Cam Newton - I hate this pick, but I feel that this is how it's going to go down.  A new head coach, Rivera will want the face of the franchise to be somebody he wanted.  Although Newton has a large downside, he has a very large upside.  Clausen can be traded after the lockout, or kept as a backup.  Look for a veteran QB, like McNabb, to be brought in.
  2. Denver (4-12) Marcell Dareus - They need DTs bad(3 of them), they might as well take the best, and start rebuilding their defense from the front.
  3. Buffalo (4-12) Von Miller - They need a 3-4 DE, and a 3-4 OLB, the next best DE/DT is Nick Fairley, and his stock is falling, and the next best OLB is Von Miller, whose stock hase risen.  With a star like Von Miller, the Bills will never be at the bottom of the league in sack, ever.  They can take Blaine Gabbert here, but a lot of Bills fans like Fitzpatrick, or they want to try to get Luck next year.
  4. Cincinnati (4-12) Robert Quinn - Dunlap was a great pick, but Antwan Odom can't stay healthy, a great pass-rusher like Quinn opposite Dunlap, will cause havoc in the backfield, whether it's hitting the QB, or taking down the back.
  5. Arizona (5-11) Tyron Smith - Ken Whisenhunt, likes Skelton, so Gabbert will most likely not be the pick.  Patrick Peterson is the Best Player Available right now, but Tyron Smith will make a much bigger impact on the team, then Peterson. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had an off-year, and is expected to make a come-back.  Levi Brown needs to be upgraded, he is horrible,  Tyron Smith can come in, play Left Tackle, and improve this offense tremendously.  Skelton, or a veteran QB, will have more time to throw, and backs will have more holes to run through.  Left Tackle is one of the most important positions of football, and you need a great player to play it, and Smith fits the application.
  6. Cleveland (5-11) A.J. Green - Colt McCoy needs a playmaker, Josh Cribbs is a good returner, and would make a good slot reciever.  Mohammed Massaquoi is at best, a solid #2.  Benjamin Watson is a really good player, and he is a playmaker, at tight end.  They have a playmaking tight end, a playmaking running back(shouldn't be in Madden Finals), and now they need that playmaking #1 reciever, and Colt McCoy will have a very good offense to manage.
  7. San Francisco (6-10) Patrick Peterson - San Francisco received a trade offer, from Dallas, but the 49ers turned them down.  San Fransisco got lucky, and landed the best player in the draft.  He will contribute day one, and be a playmaker from years to come.
  8. Tennessee (6-10) Blaine Gabbert - New Coach, New QB, fresh start.  Gabbert will be the face of the franchise for years to come.  But Tennessee should think about bringing in Marc Bulger, Donavan McNabb, Brett Favre(just joking).
  9. Dallas (6-10) Aldon Smith - He fits Ryan's schemes very well, an article turned me on to this pick, that I read.  He is a really great player, and would be great running across from Ware. (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/667172-dallas-cowboys-rob-ryans-3-4-scheme-a-perfect-fit-for-missouris-aldon-smith)
  10. Washington (6-10) Julio Jones - With no QB fitting the value here, a trade back was the first thought, but realizing Julio Jones was still available, and the need of two recievers, Julio Jones is the instant pick. Washington gets him at great value, and fills a big need. Another receiver should be found an free agency.
  11. Houston (6-10) Prince Amukamara - BPA, and fills a need.  Whether that need is at cornerback(not really), or safety(YES!).

TRADE: New England trades their 17th pick, and their 74th pick for Minnesota's 12th pick.

  12. New England (14-2) Nick Fairley - They need a defensive end, and though Fairley is a DT, he can make the transition over.  Marcus Stroud can start the season, and Fairley can rotate with him, and eventually take the position.  Fairley is a monster, and I have no doubt in my mind, that he'll become great.
  13. Detroit (6-10) Anthony Castonzo - With no linebacker who fits the value of this pick, nor cornerback, Detroit grabs a great left tackle, Backus can now move to right tackle, and Castonzo can protect Stafford's blind side.
  14. St. Louis (7-9) Stephen Paea - Gary Gibson is overmatched, and Stephen Paea would be a great fit.  No wide receiver is available at good value, so  this is a good pick, without finding a trade partner.
  15. Miami (7-9) Mark Ingram - Ronnie Brown, and Reggie Williams are set to become free agents, so they need a running back.  This is good value for Mark.
  16. Jacksonville (8-8)J.J. Watt - J.J. has great size, at 290, but can still get around the edge, and harass the QB.  He's a top 10 talent, and this is great value.
  17. Minnesota (6-10) Christian Ponder - They grab a great QB, it would of been called a big reach, by every analyst and his hair, so they trade back, and still get their guy.  They didn't trade that far back, but it is closer to Ponder's value(20-50).
  18. San Diego (9-7) Cameron Jordan - They grab the guy they wanted, without trading up. Jacques Desaire is a free agent, so they need somebody to fill the space.  And Jordan will do a good job of that.
  19. New York Giants (10-6) Nate Solder - William Beatty isn't the franchise left tackle they want.  They fire again at somebody they think can be that player.
  20. Tampa Bay (10-6) Da'Quan Bowers - Boy did he slide.  They grabed the best guy at his position when healthy.  If he responds well to the surgery, he'll a steal.
  21. Kansas City (10-6) Phil Taylor - He is a first round talent, he's simply great.  Ron Edwards is a free agent, so this position needs to be filled.
  22. Indianapolis (10-6) Derek Sherrod - They grab a great Tackle, who can run-block and pass-block great.  Maybe the run-game will be seen again.
  23. Philadelphia (10-6) Gabe Carimi - They need a Right Tackle, so they grab the best right tackle in the draft.  Not only will he protect Vick's blind side, he'll be mauling in the run-game.
  24. New Orleans (11-5) Akeem Ayers - Shaun Rogers was signed, so a mid-round DT successor can be found.  Akeem would move insides, and Vilma would move to the weakside.
  25. Seattle (7-9) Jake Locker - Quarterback of the future.(If his accuracy is fixed)  Good value.
  26. Baltimore (12-4) Titus Young - They need a wide receiver badly.  Speciffacly a deep-threat reciever.  One who can stretch the offense.  Anquan Boldin can only do so much.
  27. Atlanta (13-3) Jonathan Baldwin - They need two wide receivers, they draft Baldwin to be their #2, they will need to find a #1 in free agency though.
  28. New England (14-2) Justin Houston - Grabbed that elite rusher that they need.  A good DE in Fairley and a good rusher in Houston makes this a good defense again.
  29. Chicago (11-5) Danny Watkins - Due to concerns about his age, he slides this far.  And Chicago lucks out, by grabbing an elite tackle.
  30. New York Jets (11-5)  Mason Foster - They need a outside rush line-backer.  This is arguably a reach, but I don't consider it one.  Solid pick.
  31. Pittsburgh (12-4) Mike Pouncey - He slid a bit, and the Steelers get lucky.
  32. Green Bay (10-6) Brooks Reed - Two long-haired white pass rushers on one team.  Oh boy.

Wow

First mock I’ve seen with Tyron Smith taken before the cowboys. Anyway, Cowboys should take Fairley at 9 if he’s there. Like you said he’s gonna be a great player.

Will Beatty hasn't gotten enough of a chance to show he's not their franchise LT

and Jerry Reese was just quoted as saying just as much.

That said they could still go OT. I hate Nate Solder but I guess if they draft him it’d allow Beatty to get a shot cuz its essentially a waste of a pick for 2 years.

You don't want Sherrod

so I give you Solder, and you don’t want him either?

I said Sherrod was average

so unlike Solder, he doesn’t suck…so I guess that’s a good thing. I’d take Sherrod over SOlder at least.

I did not want Sherrod

If they go LT, Solder makes more sense. A quicker player now that we will be seeing more OLBs in division. If Sherrod and Beatty are too much alike to have one replace the other.

Jets

Reach, he can’t rush the pass well enough to be a true 3-4 OLB. Should have given us Martez Wilson.

by JetKing55 on Apr 21, 2011 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

Foster is an ideal 4-3 OLB

Wilson or Reed would be a much better pass rusher

The below comment contradicts the above one.
I put a lot of thought into each pick.

no I did think about that...

…I just didn’t give a long explanation.

Could of went Rodney Hudson, Muhammad Wilkerson, I can give an actual explanation, if you want, my cousin came over, so I rushed this, as you can see the explanations did get shorter.

That is just such a stupid reason to make a pick. If you were rushed it's OK, but I just found those 2 statements funny.

Oh. and give us Wilkerson over Reed all day. Not a first rounder.

BTW, the Packers already have 5 white LBs, 3 of which have long hair. I think we filled our quota in that area.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Brooks Reed actually is considers worthy of #16 by some Jags fans…so #32 is better value.

Let me see if I can name them:

AJ Hawk, Clay Matthews, and does Poppinga have long hair or something I can’t think of the third.

by JetKing55 on Apr 22, 2011 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Hawk, Matthews, and Brandon Chillar are white and have long hair. Poppinga is white, as is Frank Zombo, but they have short hair. Nick Barnett and Erik Walden are black with long hair, and Des Bishop’s hair isn’t exactly short either. So it’s not just white guys with long hair, it’s long hair in general.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Erm...

Watkins isn’t a 1st round talent, nor is he a tackle in the NFL.

I do like the pick, but in the 2nd round. He will be a G in the NFL and that is the Bears’ biggest need.

I'll roll up

Good point, hes a guard,

but hes the best guard in the draft, his age is practically his only con.

Still

Not a 1st rounder and not the Tice style of guard.

Tice prefers big tackle types to transition to guards. I.e Marcus Cannon (TCU)

I'll roll up

by suckmyditka on Apr 21, 2011 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reason he's not a "first rounder" is due to age, not talent.

But Chicago isn’t a rebuilding team, they’re one of those who’s really in win now mode. They can take Watkins and feel good about it because he’ll produce right away.

not liking the pick

Ponder and even Bowers are better picks

by Jagsrok9008 on Apr 21, 2011 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

Bowers is better, I'm not understanding why he slid, but Watt is still a top talent.

I think Bowers will still go in the Top 10, and I think the Jags would take him over Watt but Watt is still a pick a fan should be very happy with. Ponder, Im not sure if he belongs that high but I guess on draft day it won’t really matter.

Good effort

But nonway pats trade up for nick fairley. Not even a option fairley one year wonder in college with character issues. No thanks pats will trade down for quanity and future picks .

No thanks on Phil Taylor.

His feet now concern me, and honestly I don’t know if he’s worth it at 21. I like Jerrell Powe better, and he can be had later on, possibly in the second, if not third.

My alternate pick: Martez Wilson from Illinois.
He plays MLB but he’s fast enough to take over for Vrabel on the outside.

Just my opinion, but overall I like the mock, it looks like you put thought into it.

Yeah, I used to be high on him....

But then I started to research him more, and find out more about him and I saw him get washed out of A LOT of plays. Well, maybe not a lot, but enough to make me wonder why anyone would pay him first round money. Kind of like Ayers. I can’t believe anyone would ever draft him in the first round.

I had that happen with Kerrigan for the Jags

The more I looked into him, the less impressed I was/am. He no doubt has talent, but not pick 16 talent IMO

by Jagsrok9008 on Apr 21, 2011 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me get this straight.

Moving a veteran left tackle, who is coming off the best year of his career(only 4 sacks given up) to the right side, where we have a young right tackle coming off the best year of his career and about to hit his prime, just to put a rookie left tackle, who will at best be as good as Jeff Backus is, is going to help the Lions offensive line. People have to realize that tackle is a STRENGTH on our offensive line, with Backus starting on the left side, and Gosder Cherilus on the right side. And, we drafted our future left tackle last year in Jason Fox, who is probably just as good as ANY of the tackles in this draft, if not better. And we also have a great backup right tackle in Corey Hilliard. Our weakness on the o-line is at right guard, where Stephen Peterman is decent at best, when healthy, but hasn’t been healthy for 2-3 years.

just say who you'd take

Castonzo is a decent pick here. Some people rate him the #1 tackle in the draft. And there are very few positions Detroit won’t take in the 1st round. OT isnt one of them. I’d personally go Jordan or Bowers.

by BSims on Apr 22, 2011 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

With this mock,

I could see the Lions taking Watt, C. Jordan, Bowers, or maybe even Ingram. All over an offensive tackle.

Agreed. I am one of the biggest Titus Young fans around and I would be very upset if we used our first on him.

by AV23 on Apr 21, 2011 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing. The Ravens have a need at receiver (especially for a burner), but it isn’t as pressing as a couple of other positions. As far as Ozzie’s draft philosophy goes, it seems moderately unlikely that the best player available at number 26 would be a receiver.

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Ed Reed covers the rest.

Particularly a one dimensional WR like Young. If we are going to take any WR in the first (which I doubt happens) it would be Baldwin I believe.

Love Dareus

just wanted to throw a couple thoughts out there though.

-For Arizona, Whisenhunt may like Skelton but I bet he likes his job more, and won’t rely on a kid a year out of Fordham to be his QB. If Miller is gone and Gabbert’s available, I doubt he’ll pass, especially for an incredibly raw OT.
-Word is Texans don’t want to go CB first again, I think they should consider but that’s the word I’ve heard. And if anyone drafts Prince that high I doubt its for him to be a Safety
-Don’t see Fairley in a 3-4, especially a 2 gap one. He’s your prototypical 3 tech penetrator, I don’t see him taking on blocks at the next level.
-Paea I don’t see going that high, pretty sure at this stage he’s a fringe first.
-Bowers at 20 because of arthoscopic knee surgery? Its one of the most basic kinds and recovery is about a month. If he falls that far, it would have to be something else that turns off teams
-Foster as a pass rushing OLB?
-I like Watkins as well, but even without the age I think Pouncey is the better prospect and if the Bears go OG they’d go Pouncey over Watkins

I like it overall, I just like knitpicking mocks when I have the time to.

If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.

Drafting a LDE really solves our pass rushing problems. We are going to have the best defensive line in the NFL next year and lead the league in sacks.

by Jags.0 on Apr 22, 2011 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Bowers remains the wild card of the whole draft

in that the injury/surgery he’s undergoing could make him a horrific bust to whichever team drafts him… and that some teams drafting for DE want to get a player who starts right away (whenever the CBA gets done, that is) and may not want to wait for 6 weeks-3 months for Bowers to heal up.

The question has to be asked right up to Draft Night: what is Da’Quan Bowers’ medical status, and how soon will he be up to snuff?

The 2010 Bucs: Considering their two-minute offense works wonders... Why can't EVERY offensive drive be run like that during the other 58 minutes of the damn game?!

by witty on Apr 24, 2011 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

I'm coming around to liking JJ Watt at 16,

but not above Jordan and certainly not above Bowers, who is the best DE in this draft. I know he had injuries but he has passed every conditioning and medical test since, Thats top-5 arguably #1 overall talent, you can’t pass that up at 16.

And Nick Fairley doesn’t seem to Bhelick’s type of player at all, I can’t see him trading up for him.

by Sylvester.The.Jaguar.fan on Apr 24, 2011 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

This is nuts

-Liuget is not falling out of the 1st altogether. Stephen Paea is a huge reach at 14, and probably won’t make the 1st round. Titus Young and Mason Foster absolutely won’t sniff the first. Way too many reaches.
-Ballsy on Tyron Smith, but I just think it’s too far of a reach. If they trade back, maybe. The Cards need to win now so the Wiz can keep his job. He needs to fill the biggest holes first and foremost.
-Doubt the cowgirls add a luxury like Aldon, too many other pressing needs.
-1 trade? Seriously, either don’t do trades or make it realistic. The Broncos alone had 3 more trades in the first than your entire mock does. You have so many reaches that if you think those guys are the best fits then you should probably incorporate more trades.
-Pick a font and stick with it. This gave me a headache reading it.
