Ronald Johnson 2011 NFL Draft Prospect Notes

The 2011 NFL Draft begins Thursday and the staff at Mocking the Draft is working hard to bring you the most in-depth information possible. We have spent countless hours reviewing college games in an attempt to produce scouting reports for each of the prospects. However, time is running out so we decided to release some scouting notes in order to cover a wider range of prospects.

After the jump you can check out the notes taken in order to come up with this final analysis.  Be sure to check out our full scouting reports HERE.

Ronald Johnson
5'11, 199 pounds | Wide receiver | Southern California

Final word: Ronald Johnson will never be a No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL. Fans will need to know that off the bat. What he should be is a very good slot receiver who contributes early in his career. He has quick feet to beat off-man coverage and  good hands. Has good long speed, which he showed playing special teams. On a team loaded with talent, Johnson pushed his way into playing time and had a good career at USC.

Star-divide

NOTES:

• Knows how to get open against zone coverage, especially in the short and middle area.

• Good hands and catches the ball away from his frame. Doesn't short-arm catches over the middle.

• Doesn't have a lot of strength and struggles against the press.

• Is limited to playing the slot and won't be a factor playing on the outside.

• Doesn't have a lot of shiftiness in the open field. Has trouble getting separation.

• Needs to get more fluid in and out of his breaks.

• Has had issues with small, lingering injuries, despite playing 47 career games (with 20 starts).

• Considered a hard worker at USC and spent a lot of time in the film room.

• A lack of size limits how good he can be in the red zone. Has to be used on slants near the end zone.

• Is easy to take down in the open field and doesn't break many tackles.
