2011 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 64
Our annual 2011 NFL Mock Draft, with picks made by each of SB Nation's NFL team bloggers, is in full swing. The latest - and last - pick in to the podium: the Green Bay Packers, at No. 64 overall.
With the 64th overall pick in the 2011 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Allen Bailey, defensive end, Miami (FL)..
Brandon Benson of AcmePackingCompany.com explains the choice, and our own Dan Kadar reacts to it, after the jump. Make sure you're grading this pick for the Packers, and checking out Acme Packing Company for all of your Packers needs.
Brandon Benson explains: As in the first round, the Green Bay Packers don't really have a pressing need here in the second round. They addressed the offensive line in the first round, with the selection of Mississippi State LT Derek Sherrod, so they can afford to look now on defense. The two positions they could use help on defense is at defensive end and outside linebacker, and in Miami's DE Allen Bailey, they might have a player who can do both.
He's a great athlete, but not a speed rusher, which might make him ideal as a five-technique (over the offensive tackle) DE in a 3-4 defense. It sounds like he's got the strength to hold the edge against the run. He could also compete with ends Mike Neal and C.J. Wilson as the lineman alongside NT B.J. Raji when the Packers play with only two linemen on passing downs.
Because he's a little undersized at 275, according to the scale at Miami's pro day, he'd probably be best suited to playing defensive end on the weak side. Since that would take the spot of expected to depart DE Cullen Jenkins, he could become his replacement. He's also light enough that he could be considered as an outside linebacker if he shows the ability to naturally drop back into coverage. That might make him better suited as the strong side outside linebacker, and require LB Clay Matthews to move back to the weak side, but obviously that wouldn't be a problem for Matthews. Bailey could be a project, but the Packers may be able to use him at multiple positions, and they can afford to give him a season to develop.
Dan Kadar reacts: Being the Super Bowl champion with a stacked roster, the Packers will be afforded the chance to take some risks in this year's draft. Bailey is a big one. He's wonderfully athletic and has flashed huge potential. But what keeps Bailey out of the first round is inconsistency. He's a hot and cold player who will consistently require the attention of coaches. His upside, though, is high. I don't think he'll ever be a linebacker in the NFL and think 3-4 end could be his top spot. He's really good at hitting gaps and penetrating the pocket. On a team where the linebacker spot opposite Clay Matthews is a little uncertain, Bailey could give them a pass rush from the end spot. [Allen Bailey Scouting Report]

I agree
Bailey is too slow off the line. I watched a clip of him on youtube a couple days ago, the video even went into slow motion clearly showing that Bailey was the last one out of his stance EVERY time. I don’t think he’s the kind of player Capers will want. Doesn’t play fast enough. That’s just my hunch though…
Superbowl Champs Baby!!!!!
