Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Rank your teams draft.

Returning from last year, your opportunity to tell why you think a player will or won't work for your team, or if you like or dislike what your team did.

Star-divide

As for my Steelers:

1.31  Cameron Heyward:  A.  Looks to provide depth and work into the rotation this year, should be a great starter in our system.  It's a no glory trench job as our DE, and Heyward looks like a perfect fit.

2.31  Marcus Gilbert: C+.  Position flexibility is a Tomlinism, and Gilbert has it.  He also has upside to eventually start wherever he fits best.  Downside is he looks like he'll take a while to get there, which as a second round pick gets you marked down a lot.  Bonus points for being best friends with our Pro Bowl Center who called blocking assignments last year, let's hope they get together and help overcome the lockout delay on player development a little bit.  Really like this pick, but it's not going to pay soon enough to get a higher grade.

3.31  Curtis Brown:  A-.  I'm a fan of Brown, I think he's going to be a starter by his third year and this year will at least be able to not get destroyed by GB's 4th WR.  He might not be fast enough to cover the elite burners, so he won't be filling Ike's shoes.  That's the reason he's got a minus.  That's the only negative on this pick.  Seriously, I'm a big fan of this pick.

4.31  Cortez Allen:  B-.  This looks like a gamble pick to me, but paired with the Brown pick it works.  If Brown is able to fill the immediate depth concern then we don't need a polished 4th CB with this pick, we can gamble on a guy like Allen.  BTW, these grades assume Ike stays with the Steelers, if he doesn't we're screwed no matter who we drafted at CB.  (short of Peterson, maybe, our system isn't rookie friendly at all.)

5.31  Chris Carter:  A.  His combine numbers are incredibly similar to our 2nd round pick last year.  They are close in size too.  While I wasn't a huge fan of Worilds last year, getting a similar athlete in the 5th is a great pick.  We don't need him to start, we don't need him to play at all unless both Woodley and Harrison go down, at which point it's all academic anyway.  Tomlin likes taking athletes with a certain mindset and molding them into players.  We'll see how it works out in the future, but I'm buying in right now.

6.31  Keith Williams:  B+.  This is a 6th round pick.  The scouting reports on him mirror a current starter on our O-Line, fellow 6th round pick Chris Kemoatu.  I like the mentality of the selection.  Seriously it's a 6th round pick and we don't have holes to fill that I think we could fill here, I'm not grading harshly at this point.

7.31  Baron Batch:  B.  See above.  This is a shot to find a third down back to replace M. Moore.  If he can do that we save money towards keeping Woodley.  A smart risk/reward pick.

Overall:  B-

What we need is future starters on the O-Line, CB and DL, and depth at CB immediately.  We addressed that rather well.  I like the individual picks a lot, but overall we got nobody who figures to make a starting level impact on day one, and the best scenarios these players are replacing older guys.  I'm not giving a higher grade without an immediate significant upgrade or a potential Superstar in the mix.

Giants

1) Prince Amukamara – A+ (Top 10 talent at 19? Yes please.)

2) Marvin Austin – A (Late 1st round pick at 52? Yes please)

3) Jerrel Jernigan – B+ (2nd round value, WR insurance, and KR/PR? Yes please)

4) James Brewer – B+ (A little raw, but OL help with a 3rd round prospect? Yes please)

6) Greg Jones – A+++ (A 2nd round prospect in the 6th at position of need? Yes please)

6) Tyler Sash – A+ (A 3rd round prospect in the 6th? Yes please)

6) Jacquain Williams – C+(A little known, but physical specimen and all around good guy? Yes please)

7) Da’Rel Scott – A- (Fastest RB in the draft in the 7th? Yes please)

Overall Grade: A.

Didn’t address all our needs, but got arguably best player available in each round.

I think they addressed all their needs

I mean maybe a center instead of Williams, but it appears that Williams is just a hidden gem type dude, or at least that’s the plan. He’s tall, long (pause), fast, good agility and a team captain on a solid college defense.

Wonder how the hell he was so overlooked…but maybe he’s a Landry Fields type dude.

Texans

1) JJ Watt – A- ( I think hes going to be really good but we have good DE’s. Only reason for minus but i love the pick)

2) Brooks Reed- A+ ( Good player, no real flags, Position of Need. Good Value)

2) Brandon Harris – B+ (Could be good. Im not as high on im as others but ill trust Wade here)

4) Rashad Carmichael – C+ (We really have enough CB’s on the Roster. This kinda reeks of throw players at it till one sticks. Still he does have some upside and our secondary does suck.)

5) Shiloh Keo – B ( Position of need. I dont expect him to really play all that much but in the 5th its ok. Seems like he has the upside to maybe play and could contribute on special teams)

5) T.J Yates – A+ ( I think he is a guy who with a little development could turn into a productive starter. Ive heard nothing but good things about him and in the 5th is great value. )

7) Derek Newton – Developmental Swing Tackle who could step in if our backup LOT leaves in F.A

7) Cheta Ozougwu – A+++ just for the name. And being Mr. Irrelevant

Overall: A

We got some good players and added alot of talent to the defense. There is still more work to be done but our team just became alot more potent on Sundays.

Do you feel

that they could want to throw Glover Quinn into safety? I think you’re right in a sense, keep trying until something sticks, but that’s how the draft goes. Watt and Reed really help the front of that D. The secondary needed a lot of work though. Harris should start, and how you think Kareem Jackson will come along is a big thing. Quinn, Carmicheal, Keo, they all have some upside and figuring out the pieces to the puzzle is a big part, but at least on the surface it seems as though the pieces are there.

ive heard alot of smoke around glover quinn to safety.

I think it could be a good move but he was out best cb last year. I really dont want to move him away from a position he has played well at. Add to that the position is already an area of need and i would really rather not move him.

Kareem Jackson- possible the worst cb in the league last year is now our number 1 option. God help us.
We really need to find a top flight free agent cb.

Ravens

CB Jimmy Smith – A
WR Torrey Smith – A+
OT Jah Reid – B
WR Tandon Doss – B+
CB Chykie Brown – C+
DE Pernell McPhee – C+
QB Tyrod Taylor – A-
RB Anthony Allen – C

Overall, I give Ozzie an A- for this draft. He nailed on some of our biggest needs while also getting some of the drafts best players in the first few rounds. Ozzie picked up elite playmakers in Jimmy Smith and Torrey Smith that are the players we need to take us to the next level (Superbowl).

Jah Reid is a C+. He was a reach at 90 so trading up makes him a bigger reach. Tyrod Taylor should be a B since he is 3 to 4 years away from being able to play in the NFL. And, You Will Never Get To The Super Bowl

Tandon Doss

what an absolute steal — A+. Reid I can understand, he was the only tackle on the board who might actually play well this year, maybe not great upside, but understand the need to replace Gaither. Overall, I’d say A+ (as a Giants fan).

Redskins

1 – Ryan Kerrigan – A- Will be a starter immediately & get the double teams off of Orakpo
2 – Jarvis Jenkins – B Will be an immediate starter & improve our D-line, situational 3rd down NT, slight reach at 41 tho
3 – Leonard Hankerson – A+ Immediate starter who was a steal in the 3rd rd., very good player at a huge need
4 – Roy Helu – B Will probably be a rotational starter with Torain
5 – Dejon Gomes C- Provides backup for Landry & STs help but both a reach & a position that was not a need
5 – Niles Paul A – Great value & tons of potential & talent, could develop into a #1 WR, provides immediate depth & help on STs
6 – Evan Royster – C- Good hands & pass blocker, mediocre RB, 3rd down/ back up type of RB
6 – Aldrick Robinson – B+ Good slot reciever, possible day one starter
7 – Brandyn Thompson C ST & backup
7 – Maurice Hurt – C Possible starter in a season or two, backup
7 – Markus White – F Bad fit, doubt he makes it to the PS
7 – Christopher Nield – B- Under-rated player at WVU who could contribute as a rotational NT from day one
Overall I think the Redskins get a B-, passing on Gabbert IMHO was a mistake but I must be higher on him than our coaching staff is & by adding four more picks that included both Hankerson & Helu & getting Kerrigan for the pick they gave up they got a lot of value. I think that they should have taken a NT earlier (Powe) & added some more interior line help but if the talent or fit is not there at your pick, it is not wise to reach no matter how big the need is

by ENsDad27 on May 1, 2011 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Not a huge fan of Jarvis Jenkins in a 3-4 defense

but, love the Kerrigan and Hankerson picks. Chris Neild in Round 7 was borderline grand theft. Thought you guys should have addressed the OL more and took 1 too many WRs, but overall, definitely an above average draft.

I’d be very happy as a ‘Skins fan, provided I knew I’d be getting a new QB in FA.

Jets

1, 30: Muhammad Wilkerson-Fills a need and maybe starts, should force havoc in opposing backfields. (A-)
3, 96: Kenrick Ellis- A complete monster who was an enormous value pick while also filling a minor need. Makes our line even better. (A+)
4: Bilal Powell- A reach in my mind, and a RB early wasn’t really necessary, but he could make our backfiled even scarier because I think he can be great in the future. Would have prefered a pass rusher. ©
5: Jeremy Kerley- Even if this pick marks the end for Brad Smith as a Jet, Kerely is a playmaker with good hands in the slot and crazy return skills. (B+)
1st 7: Greg Mcelroy- I don’t understand this pick. I was always fine with Kellen Clemens as our backup, but I guess he somehow isn’t good enough. We could have again went S or OLB here. However, even if there isn’t much of a purpose, I think he could become a great QB in the NFL. (C-)
2nd 7: Scotty Mcknight- Just a dumb pick. It was only for Sanchez, since they are best friends, which I think doesn’t help at all. I know that its a 7th but we still could have gotten value and filled a need with CB Kendric Burney or OLB Mark Herzlich. (D-)

Patriots:

Nate Solder: A-: He will likely be good, but because he is raw, the Pats will have to re-sign Matt Light, who will demand 3 years. Solder will be good, but I would have gone Castonzo/Carimi

Trade of 28th pick: A+: We absolutely ripped off the Saints, and Ingram won’t be anything special.

RasI Dowling: B+: Pats have a lot of CBs, but you can never have enough. Value was decent too

Shane Vereen: C: The Pats needed at least one RB, but the value was terrible. I would have preferred using a later-round pick on Todman/Scott/Ridley

Stevan Ridley: D: Another RB, really? Plus he is a huge reach and a 5th round prospect at best

Ryan Mallet: F: Tom Brady’s “heir apparent” won’t see the field in his years in NE, and therefore, won’t yield a great return in a trade

Marcus Cannon: A+: A second round prospect is worth the risk in the 5th. I wish him the best on his chemotherapy. He is a mauler on the O-Line and (assuming he recovers from his cancer) should be a fixture on the Pats’ O-Line

Lee Smith: C-: The Pats have always had a great blocking TE, and he could be the next guy to do that. But the value is terrible, he would certainly be available in the 7th round.

Markell Carter: A-: the value, once again, isn’t great. But I’m glad to see the Pats finally draft an OLB. THis guy is a good prospect, and IMO could work hard and get off the practice squad in 2012-13.

Malcom Williams: F-: The 730th rated prospect in the draft: Enough said.

All in all,

RBs are so volatile,

great one year, out of football the next. I feel that there are a few once-in-a-decade talents like Peterson and Johnson who deserve 1st round picks. But so many RBs are either out of football or useless in 5 years. But you can get a solid OT, DE, QB, or CB for a decade if you get them right. I don’t think Ingram will be much VALUE at 28

Colts

1) Anthony Castonzo, LT – Great pick, fills massive need at tackle for us [A+]

2) Ben Ijalana, OG/OT – Another good pick, can be used as a OG right away or even be starter at RT [A]

3) Drake Nevis, DT – Solid DT that can fill holes and get through the line and make plays in the backfield [A]

4) Delone Carter, RB – Looks like he can be a good back for us. Mostly when we get into short yardage. It wasn’t a area of need coming into the draft with the many backs we have on the roster already, but I believe it was a draft value of Carter is well placed. [B-]

6) Chris Rucker, CB – If it wasn’t for the off the field issues I think Rucker would have gone higher. Watching the Big10 all year I was what he had when focused on football. But that said the many off the field baggage that he carries drags down this pick. If he can get his head straight I think this might be a great draft class for the Colts top to bottom.[C-](until he shows he’s serious about football)

Overall: [A-]

Im kinda with you with Carter.

What I’ve seen of him looks good but, that’s just highlights.

I think in a normal year the Colts don’t draft him. But Polian said that they were going into this draft as if none of our FA are coming back, and with Addai as a FA i believe that’s where the pick came from. Though I do like how they address our issue of short yardage, because who knows how many games could be won/put away if we could make 3rd and 1 (i.e. Suber Bowl 44 (maybe))

by BigBlueIntervention on May 1, 2011 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

When Polian made the comment about not assuming any of the FAs would be back, I actually nailed the Delone Carter pick. I read that as “we are drafting a RB” but figured they would use a mid round pick. While perhaps I disagree in theory, I really love what Carter brings. He is basically Mike Hart but 3 inches taller and 40 pounds heavier. Our biggest struggle for the last half decade has been 3rd and 1. Carter is exactly the kind of stocky-do-a-bit -of-everything back that the Colts should be targeting. While he may not see a lot of snaps, I think the value you get from him exceeds what you should expect from a 4th round pick.

I probably give that pick a B+ and downgrade the Nevis pick to a B+ so I’ve got us at an A- overall as well.

Bills

3- Marcell Dareus, DE/DT (A) – Impossible to argue with this pick. Stud D-lineman that the bills needed badly
34- Aaron WIlliams, CB/S (B+) – Tad surprising, but they got a fringe first round talent that will help a thinning secondary
68- Kelvin Sheppard, ILB (C+) – Feels like a bit of a reach as it seems they were higher on him than most, but the theme here is an easy one for bills fans to get behind: big defenders who play the game hard.
100- Da’Norris Searcy, SS (B) – Trend continues, another big physical guy who can do a lot of different things on the field and will almost certainly be a special teams stud. Donte Whitner and his mediocre, over-priced, over-drafted play are out the door finally.
122- Chris Hairston, OT (B) – I question waiting this long to deal with our thin depth at OT, but hairston’s a solid prospect with starter potential
133- Johnny White, RB (A-) – Solid value pick, White brings a lot to the table as the Bills’ third RB and special teamer.
169- Chris White, ILB (A) – Hands down my favorite pick of this draft. Whites a heck of a good football player
206 – Justin Rodgers, CB (B-) I thought some better guys were left on the board here, but im OK with completely retooling an overrated secondary left over from the jauron years
245- Michael Jasper, NT (C-) Fun pick for us bills fans to talk about, as the mans a physical freak at a slender 380 lbs. but bottom line is its tough to see this guy making the team. no one seems to know if he can actually play football or not

Overall: Solid B. First time in years (maybe ever?) i didnt hate a single one of the bills picks

Agreed, the Bills draft was pretty good

although I question not getting any interior OL prospects. Didn’t like De’Norris Searcy, I think it was superfluous to get 3 DBs, and nobody had him ranked that high. Your draft wouldve been sick if you got a nice guard like Clint Boling or John Moffitt or someone liek that.

Bow to the Fresh Prince of the Meadowlands.

by BigBlueIntervention on May 1, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

eh, they seem to like their interior OL, and a lot of us kind of see things the same way. i dont disagree that adding a guy like that wouldve been nice, but i think it only would have happened if the value was exceptional. i dont really remember any interior guy “falling” to them at any point
i think they took 3 DBs because they are assuming the worst for the lockout, which is to say that ALL of their free agents are out the door into an open market. this would likely mean whitner, youboty, and florence are all goners, so they take 2 CBs and a safety.

by boomsauce on May 1, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

i take that back, boling couldve been had instead of searcy. i do find that kind of strange but they obviously liked searcy more i guess…

Searcy was a reach, look how many good safeties went undrafted. Rogers was a great pick, you got great value.

Raven

Jimmy Smith B+ I like the pick, I will grade him down a bit for the character issues. His highlights indicate great coverage skills and he can tackle. Not many interceptions in college.

Torrey Smith B+ Another good pick. Big receiver who can go long. Sterling Sharpe thinks he needs work on his short and medium routes. Sharpe did really like him going deep. He wakes up every day with that speed and tiny hands.

Jah Reid B Maybe a small reach. I know Reid was moving up almost every ones draft. He is big and fits the Ravens mold. Ozzie is really good picking tackles in middle rounds. I really like his name… The Force May Be With Him

Tandon Doss A ( I do not think Tandon is better than Torrey but I like him in the fourth) This guy has great hands. check out his highlights.

Chykie Brown C+ He is fast and can cover. Not sure about his tackling

Pernell McPhee B- We do need more pressure on the QB. This guy has not played up to expectations but has an upside.

Tyrod Taylor A I like Tyrod. He has great speed and runs well. When scrambling , he always has his head up and looking down field. Seems to me to be a throw first QB.

Anthony Allen B – Fits what Ravens need, big back who keeps his feet going.

Patriots

Solder A: He looks exactly like Vollmer, has the same scouting report as Vollmer, came from being a TE like Vollmer, and has had more experience than Vollmer did in college. 2 Vollmers= 2 bookend tackles.

28 trade A- : I always like the future 1st + current 2nd. Wish we had gotten a 5 tech, but next year’s draft has a lot of possible OLB’s that fit BB’s system.

Dowling B+: Wish the Pats had scouted his injuries, but he is a first round talent. Big guy. Matching him+McCourty with Bodden in the slot= Good secondary.

Vereen C: Only pick I dislike. Inbetween Woody+BJGE, I feel like one of the three will leave because they will get more touches elsewhere.

Ridley B: Bit of a reach, but this was the RB we did need. Bruiser, gets the tough yards, can play a bit of FB. Solid pick, but a reach.

Mallet A: This is a Win/Win/Loss scenario. Loss is if he is found in a motel doing blow of a hookers stomach, never gets his s*** together, and is out of the league in 3 years. But then again, it’s not like he was a top 15 selection. If he doesn’t pan out, shrug. Slight disappointment, but really no harm no foul. Scenario 2 he turns into Kevin Kolb and the Pats ship him for a first round pick in three years to a team that needs a QB. Scenario 3 he stays, learns from Brady, Pats trade away Brady in three years, Mallett is the starter who hopefully turns into a less mobile version of Rodgers.

Cannon A+: 90% chance of getting a late first early second round guy (Chicago was reportedly going to take him at thirty before the news) in the fifth. I’m rooting for him to get through his cancer, and I think he’s a great pick.

Lee Smith B: Possible future replacement for Crump. Gives us more options with the Heavy sets. I wanted them to take Herzlich from here on out.

Markell Carter B-: The only front 7 guy, watched some tape, got some info. He’s got some potential. I won’t put anything after the fifth round below a B-, because you never know who’s gonna be the few standouts in the later rounds.

Malcolm Williams B-: Roster fodder, possible specials teams gunner. You never know with these picks.

Overall B: Love Solder and Cannon. No matter what others say, O-Line was our number 1 priority. Mallett will make this class an A if he pans out. Don’t like Vereen, Ridley seems like a solid pick but a reach. Getting the extra 1st and 2nd makes me feel a lot better about the draft.

WE ARE PENN STATE

by Cameron O on May 1, 2011 5:27 PM EDT reply actions

So we only have a few differences.

I hit the Ridley pick harder because of circumstance. If it weren’t for Vereen, I would give it a B. I gave it a D because we already had one RB in the draft. THe other main differences were Mallet (I’m done arguing about him), Smith, and Williams. I can’t give the Pats anything but an F for reaching 500 pllaces down (Williams was no. 730 on CBS’s draft board), and I feel like Smith was a huge reach. But because of so many reaches, I gave the overall a C.

Dowling

That guy was probably the #1 CB in the draft (yes even over PP, who has conversion to safety written all over him, over amakumara, over Jimmy Smith, even if Smith was clean) He’s the biggest hitter, best tackler, 4.43 speed, long arms, big hands, size, team captain, big production. Every team who passed on Prince thought, oh well, we’ll take Dowling in the 2nd cuz he’s better, and I knew the Pats were going to take him. The injuries are overblown, he was healthy for his first 3 years. So jealous, and I’m a giants fan. I was kind of hoping the Giants would take him in the 1st. He’s an A+.

by robotoverlord on May 1, 2011 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he is the 4th best:

He’s not better than PP, period. He’s close to Prince, but not quite as good. The third guy is Aaron Williams. I think he will be great.

but on tape he reminds me of antrel rolle, antonio cromartie. On tape Dowling reminds me of Nnamdi Asomugha. Clone even.

Lions

Nick Fairley A+
Top echelon defensive talent falling to the 13th pick, to be paired with Suh, Avril, Vanden Bosch, Williams, Jackson, Hill? The Lions tied with the Giants last year in terms of most disruptive defensive lines, and now it’s a fair bet that the Lions will stand tall above the rest at the end of this year.

Titus Young B
Not a tremendous need, but the value lined up here for the 44th pick in a guy that fits the system perfectly and will help relieve the team of at least one of its terrible WRs. Goodbye Bryant Johnson, we won’t miss you.

Mikel Leshoure A
Sacrificing a fourth round pick to reach up and snag this guy was a great move. We’ve been in need of another running back in our tandem since Morris is getting up there in age and Kevin Smith is on the last legs of his career in Detroit. Will tremendously help in the power game that was being serviced by a patchwork of RBs in Morris, Felton, Smith, and Logan. The perfect thunder to our lightning in Jahvid Best with great value.

Doug Hogue C
Even for a fifth round pick, it’s hard to be overjoyed in this kid. That said, he was easily the best special teamer left on the board and we do need to start developing more LBs to help that facet of the game. If all he does is contribute to special teams in his career, he won’t be a bust.

Johnny Culbreath B+
Below Leshoure and Fairley this is easily the best pick of our draft. An athletic, versatile small school OT/OG with upside to spare, a pickup who was (reportedly) being targeted by San Francisco as well, so I’ll give props to them for snatching this kid up before he hit UDFA status.

Overall A
Three immediate impact players and two projects, can’t do much better than that when you’re only picking five times.

Haven’t seen anyone give a team a C, D, or F. Wow, for a site dedicated to draftniks and draft junkies, I thought people would be able to put fandom and homerism aside and acurately rate their draft.

I’ll be straight, I like my team’s picks, however they were average picks and I would give them a C.

Chiefs

1. Jon Baldwin, B: While I’m glad that we addressed the need for another wideout, Baldwin had a lackluster Senior campaign and that fact that he threw his teammates under the bus is disheartening. Still pretty talented, however. If Todd Haley wasn’t the coach, I would be more concerned about this pick.

2. Rodney Hudson, A: Was calling for this pick, and was ecstatic when it was announced. Even if Wiegmann comes back for another year, Hudson is ready to step in at the starting spot at either center or guard.

3. Justin Houston, B+: I couldn’t believe how far down the draft board this guy fell. I know he has “character issues”, but most people were still giving him a high second round grade.

4. Allen Bailey, A-: This guy is freakishly athletic, and he’ll need some time to coach him up, but he could really be something down the line. If anything, maybe this will push Jackson a little more. If not, I would still feel comfortable plugging Bailey in there.

5. Jalil Brown, B-: It’s getting to the point where teams almost have to add at least one cornerback with every draft to offset how many defensive backs are used in each game. Brown’s a tough, physical DB that we can stick at the nickel or dime.

6. Ricky Stanzi, B-: Pioli wants to draft a QB almost every year, which is a change of pace for this organization considering this is only the THIRD QB taken by the Chiefs since after the 1997 draft. Last year our team looked lost when Croyle had to step in for Cassel, so bringing in a more reliable back-up was needed.

7. Gabe Miller, C: The pick I am least excited about. We already drafted one OLB, and even if Vrabel retires, we would still have a nice little rotation of Hali, Houston, and Studebaker. Would’ve rather have seen a WR here, like a Jeremy Kerley.

8. Jerrell Powe, B+: Was surprised that Powe lasted until this pick. I know that he has is fair share of issues, but big bodies that can be the NT in a 3-4 are hard to come by. With the right motivation, he could be our starter for when the season starts.

9. Shane Bannon, B+: Had no idea who this was, but sounds like a beast of a fullback that should see some playing time this year.

by RediculousAM on May 2, 2011 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

Nobody is really talking about Justin Houston

dude was a 1st round value literally a couple weeks ago. He failed a marijuana test at the combine? Happens every year, and I don’t see it being a huge impact…best example is percy harvin.

Giants didn’t need a DE otherwise I would’ve been rooting hard for us to try and get this guy in the 3rd round.

Bow to the Fresh Prince of the Meadowlands.

by BigBlueIntervention on May 2, 2011 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. I have been lobbying for months for the Ravens to take him in the 1st so a team to get him in the 3rd would be a steal. I was hoping we would have traded up in the 3rd to get him, but obviously Ozzie wasn’t too high on him. Still loved the Ravens draft and think we found some quality players and a couple starters.

by AV23 on May 2, 2011 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Watching game film, he does take a fair amount of plays off, so I think might’ve been a bigger red flag for teams than the marijuana test. But players taking plays off seemed to be quite the theme of the players the Chiefs selected, uncharacteristic of Pioli, so we’ll see how a they’ll respond to a coach who won’t take any sh*t.

by RediculousAM on May 2, 2011 4:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with these grades

Except for Bailey. I give that one a B since I’m not sure how he will fit yet. I’m sure Crennel has a plan for him, possibly like how the Chiefs used Gilberry last season. Still, good draft considering how much talent the Chiefs got.

Bengals

AJ Green, WR, Georgia- B
A lot of people in Cincy love this pick, and I think that he’ll be a productive WR in the NFL, but taking a WR at the #4 spot takes away some of the value in my eyes.

Andy Dalton, QB, TCU – A
I think Dalton is going to be a good NFL QB and may surprise a lot of teams. He’s accurate both inside and outside the pocket and is a natural born leader. The reason he gets an A though, is because the team didn’t reach to draft him. They were patient and they got the guy they were targeting all along.

Dontay Moch, OLB, Nevada – B-
There have been reports of this 250 lb man running the 40 in 4.2 or less (yeah, you read that right). You simply don’t find athletes like that very often in the third round of the draft, but it’s hard to project how Moch’s game will translate to the pros, But he’s a smart kid with high character, a hard worker, and he’s going to get after Flacco, McCoy and Rothlesberger for years to come.

Clint Boling, OG, Georgia – A
Boling will be an immediate starter at guard and could develop into a good RT in time.

Robert Sands, SS, West Virginia – B+
I like this pick a lot more than other people in Cincy. Sands is a perfect fit for Zimmer’s defense. He’s a hard hitting athlete with good range. I know, his cover skills leave something to be desired, but to pick up an athlete like this in the 5th round is a great value at a huge position of need for this team. He’ll contribute immediately on special teams and will work his way into the starting SS role.

Ryan Whalen, WR, Stanford – D
He’s a good player, but it’s hard to envision him making it past the practice squad given our current roster. Could be a special teams contributor in two years and maybe backup Jordan Shipley.

Korey Lindsey, CB, Southern Illinois – B
It might take Lindsey some time to get used to the NFL game, but the Bengals got a potential nickel corner in the seventh round. He’ll spend some time on the practice squad but has a shot at the 53 if Joseph isn’t resigned.

Jay Finley, RB, Baylor – D+
Another pick that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Quick back without blazing speed. Sounds like Bernard Scott. It does fill a need however and add depth at the position.

Overall – A-
The Bengals got potential starters and role players at pretty much every level in this draft. They found good value in the money rounds, got the QB they wanted and picked themselves up from what’s has been a disastrous offseason.

I think the Texans, Arizona, New Orleans and KC and the Ravens had the best drafts.

On the other end of the spectrum I have Carolina, Chicago, New England and Seattle as having the least specatular drafts.

I would take off NO

and add Cincy. If we are grading drafts only weeks later, their draft did the best job by far at this point in the fact that they had a reeling franchize and fan base and actually gave them something to be proud about. NO I liked as far as the prospects went, but I’m getting sick of teams giving first rounders to the patriots, and Ingram I just don’t think was worth it.

Cardinals

1. Patrick Peterson, CBA+: Hard to argue with getting arguably the best player in the entire draft, and QB’s are going to have a tough time choosing which side of the field to throw the ball too with PP7 roaming the opposite side of the field from DRC.

2. Ryan Williams, RBB-: Probably going to be a productive RB with big play potential, but at first glance one has to wonder where he fits in the Cards backfield. Beanie, Hightower, LSH, and Wright is a good group, but had very poor results last season (as did the rest of the team). However, Wright is likely to retire (due to concussions) and Hightower is an RFA, so this was a bigger need that some realized.

3. Rob Housler, TEC+: The Cardinals haven’t had a legitimate TE in who knows how long. Housler has a chance to be a good TE that will beat defenses up the middle with his size/speed combination. He needs to learn how to block in order for Coach Whiz to take him seriously, and it would seem that there were other players available at positions of greater need.

4. Sam Acho, OLBA-: A converted OLB that can rush the passer and has a non-stop motor. I actually really like this pick, and while I think this should have been addressed a bit earlier, I’m willing to believe that new DC Ray Horton learned from LeBeau the art of drafting later round LB’s who end up very good in the 3-4 defense.

5. Anothony Sherman, FBC: Yes, the Cardinals never use a FB, but that’s because they never have one worth using. It’s kind of nice to see the FO address it. However, a FB in the 5th? From what I’ve heard, Sherman is a pretty good lead blocker with passable hands, and he’s a beast on special teams (which means he can replace the retired Wright on ST).

6. (1) Quan Sturdivant, ILBA+: This guy had a 2nd round rating from some scouts, and the Cards got him in the 2nd round. He is another high motor, high character guy who always seems to find himself around the ball. Lining him up in the middle of the Cards defense next to 2010 2nd rounder Daryl Washington with 2010 4th rounder O’Brien Schofield and Acho on the outside, will give the Cards a young, fast, and physical linebacking core to run the aggressive defense that Ray Horton wants to implement.

(2) David Carter, DEC: Simply depth behind Dockett and Cambell, should be a solid back-up as a 3-4 DE.

7. Demarco Sampson, WRD: Big and strong, and will help a very unstable WR situation in the desert after Fitz and Breaston. Most likely just a camp body a this point in time though.

Overall grade – B+: Arizona stayed with the BPA approach to this draft, and ended with some players who are going to hopefully be very good. The only thing keeping this grade from being an A, in my opinion, is the fact that there were no OL picks in the entire draft. Lets hope this stupid lockout ends soon so they can finish filling holes at QB and on the OL..

Jaguars

Round 1: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

Grade: A One of the Top Qbs in the Draft, most people thought he would be gone by San Francisco or Arizona’s pick but he was still there and the jaguars traded up. Even though the loss of a 2nd round pick hurts, a franchise quarterback gives us a reason to forget about it.

Round 3: Will Rackley, OT/OG, Leigh

Grade: A This was a good pick, it fills a need but we got a lot of value. Some mock drafts thought he could go in or around the 2nd round. The Jaguars are over 30 years old at Center and at 1 of our OG spots. Rackley played LT in college but his biggest impact will come from Guard, which potentially will let him start his rookie season. Our o-line coach said he could possibly cross-train at center. Versatility, Depth, and a starter is a very nice pick in the 3rd Round.

Round 4 (A): Cecil Shorts, III, WR, Mount Union

Grade: B+ He comes from the small college as Pierre Garcon and people see similarities. However, Shorts statistically has better stats in college than Pierre Garcon. With the Jaguars lacking a lot of depth at Wr with the likely departure of Mike Sims-Walker, Shorts could be seeing time as our #3 WR. Also has kick returning abilities.

Round 4 (B): Chris Prosinski, S, Wyoming

Grade: C Prosinski is the least known of our draft picks, coming out of Wyoming. Youtube doesn’t really have much to show us and there isn’t a lot out there about him. Some one said he could be a potential starter at FS but for now i see just quality depth at a big weakness.

Round 5 Pick 16: Rod Isaac, DB, Middle Tennessee State

Grade: B I do think this could be our “steal”. Rod Issac is a very quick CB who was a playmaker on Middle Tennessee State’s team. If Rod Issac lives to his potential he could push Rashean Mathis to safety and be the #2 CB. Here’s some highlights from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ3BnlxDjNs

Overall Grade: B+

Green Bay Packers

1) Derrick Sherrod: A

Up until about the 18-20 range, it looked like the Packers were going to get a really good player. Then there was a run on our guys and I was terrified we were going to be stuck with a meh player. But Sherrod made it too us, and I’m very happy with the pick. He gives us the young LT to develop behind Chad Clifton this year. We have to keep Rodgers on his feet.

2) Randall Cobb: A

This pick was awesome. Cobb is a versatile playmaker that adds a whole lot of options to the offense. James Jones is likely gone, so we needed another WR for our 4-WR sets. PLus he’s a very good KR/PR, something we desperately needed. Now Tramon Williams doesn’t have to risk himself on STs.

3) Alex Green: B-

I didn’t really like this pick, and it was almost a C. But he does have a few redeeming traits that could make him very valuable for us. B-Jax is likely gone, so we needed a 3rd-down receving back. He isn’t nearly the blocking back that B-Jax is, but he does provide more as a runner if Grant or Starks miss time. He was probably a reach here, and there were other good backs to be had a bit later.

4) Davon House: B+

We needed a guy to develop behind Charles, and House has good potential. Even more importantly, Jarrett Bush is pushed farthert down in the CB depth chart.

5) D.J.Williams: B

Very good value for an extremely productive college TE. He has great hands and could be a nice weapon for Aaron. He also provides depth in case Finley goes down again. But If Jermichael can stay healthy and is re-signed, I’m not sure how much impact he’ll have.

6a) Caleb Schlauderaff: B

Don’t know much about him, but OG is good position to pick a guy up at.

6b) D.J. Smith: C

He’s a midget. I’m not sure where he plays, but maybe he could be a goot PS player.

6c) Ricky Elmore: B-

Looking at his college stats, he out-produced teammate Brooks Reed. He seems to have a knack for getting into the backfield. Kevin Greene has done wonders with our LBs, and I’m sure he can coach this guy up. Look at Frank Zombo last year.

7a) Ryan Taylor: C-

Umm… why? I don’t see any way where he makes the team. PS guy only.

7b) Lawrence Guy: B+

This guy could be a steal. He’s big and he’s fast. Good coaching can really turn this guy into a contributor.

Overall: B+. We got a couple impact players, some good developmental prospects, and also some good value.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

3. Demarco Murray- B+ There was good value rb`s much later in the draft but even so he`s probably better than the rb`s on our current roster.
