Alshon Jeffery Player Profile

Photo

Alshon Jeffery exploded last year with a breathtaking sophomore season in Columbia. He may be the most talented receiving prospect since Calvin Johnson. So much for Lane Kiffin, telling Jeffery that if chose the Gamecocks he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life.

Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 233

Class: Junior

Star-divide

NFL Player Comparison:

Brandon Marshall: Jeffery is already more of a deep threat than Marshall but they both possess great ability to make catches in traffic and use their bodies to box defenders out and fight for extra yards.

Player Bio:

  • Jeffery started his career as a true freshman in 2009. His breakout game came against Kentucky when he caught 7 passes for 138 yards and 3 TDs earning him SEC freshman of the week. He ended up leading the team with 46 receptions and 763 yards, which was good enough to make the Freshman All American Team and Freshman All SEC Team. In 2010 Jeffery set the college world alight with some simply sensational performances and ended the season with 88 receptions, 1,517 yards and 9 TDs. He set the single season school records for receptions and yards and had the second most receiving yards in SEC history. He was a Biletnikoff award finalist and a first-team All American. During 2010 he tormented opposing secondarys with eight 100 yard games. He had the fourth best receiving game in South Carolina history against Auburn when he caught 8 balls for 192 yards and 2 TDs. But perhaps his most impressive performance was in the Gamecock's upset win over Alabama when he torched the ‘Bama secondary including potential top 5 pick Dre Kirkpatrick for 100+ yards and 2 TDs.

Other Potential 1st Round WR's:

Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma State)

  • At this point in time Blackmon is really the only other receiver who could threaten knocking Jeffery off his top spot. Both are big time playmakers but come draft day I think Jeffery's size will be more coveted.

 Projected Draft Status: Top 5

  • Jeffery is the top WR in this class entering the 2011 season. If he comes close to emulating his 2010 season and runs anything below a 4.55 40 he is a lock for the Top 5 in the 2012 NFL Draft.

 Career Stats

  • 134 receptions, 2,280 yards and 15 TDs.

 Video Highlights

  • Highlight #1: Alshon Jeffery v Alabama: Look at how he dominates the entire Alabama secondary both off the line and fighting for extra yards. The way he extends for the ball over Mark Barron's head on the TD play is superb.
  • Highlight #2: General highlights showing the best of his game.

Final Thoughts

  • Jeffery is big bodied, with massive hands and a huge wingspan and he uses all three to his advantage. He is down right nasty at the line of scrimmage; he beats press man with ease and can make tough catches in traffic.
  • His body control is exceptional and I have seen him make some sensational one-handed catches. His greatest asset may well be his ability to track the football when it is in the air, he can pluck the ball over defenders like no other receiver in this class. He is exceptionally dangerous when competing for jump balls and excels running the fade route.
  • If Jeffery produces a similar season to his 2010 campaign he could well break the SEC all time receiving yards record and if it weren't for the pesky Andrew Luck guy I would have no problems in putting Jeffery at the top of my big board.

Only thing that worries me about Jeffery is his speed. Watching him, he doesn’t seem THAT fast. But the guy does everything else correctly. He definitely reminds me of Brandon Marshall with their builds.

He may be the most talented receiving prospect since Calvin Johnson.

Wasn’t this the same thing being said about AJ Green on this site? I still think Green is a far better WR than any of the guys coming out next year.

"No disrespect to Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara, but I just think I have better cover skills. They get tested a lot, and that’s for a reason. The other team sees something in their game that they want to attack, and me playing in the same league as Prince, we played the same teams and they didn’t attack me the same. So why does that happen?" - CB Jimmy Smith

I know this, but it seemed like a general statement all throughout this site and even other media outlets around the internet.

Yeah, if Alshon gets the technical sides of the game down, I'd take him over Green

But as it stands, Green is the much more refined guy, so if they were both in the same class, I agree, I’d take Green over Jeffery

I was gonna point that out too

Regardless of different writers I just don’t understand why every top rated big bodied WR is the next Calvin or the next QB is Peyton Manning or the next CB is Revis etc.

Please just tone down the hyperbole!

Green was the best since Calvin, Jeffrey is the best since Green. Simple.

Calvin Johnson is the benchmark

That is why people compare the top receivers to them. Until someone is 6’5 240lbs and runs a 4.32 they won’t be Calvin Johnson, he was a freak. I personally prefer Jeffery to Green but that is purely my opinion. Both are elite prospects though.

I agree 100% that the main concern with Alshon is his speed, he is prone to being caught from behind.

Jeffrey = Plaxico Burress. He doesn’t look fast cuz he’s a giraffe, but as soon as he’s sprinting down the sideline and giving peewee football sized DBs stiff arms into the ground, then no one cares abotu his speed.

Just don’t allow him to carry guns

Jeffery has no character concerns so it is unlikely he would be carrying a gun, and even if he did I doubt he would be as stupid to shoot himself in the leg.

I like the comparison though to Plaxico, just a little before my time as a prospect.

just cuz a guy has or doesn't have character concerns

doesn’t mean he does or doesn’t carry a gun. Lots of athletes carry guns for whatever reason.

Plaxico was carrying a gun cuz his teammate, Steve Smith, just got robbed at gun point as he was heading out to a club just a few weeks prior.

So its also not like Plaxico and his well noted character concerns was carrying a gun because of them.

What I want to know more than the fact that Plaxico had a gun in the club is…….who the hell wear sweat pants to the club?

Joe Flacco doesn’t go to the club. He is a dork.

I guess being from the UK I just can’t quite understand why carrying a gun for protection is a good idea. Different cultures I guess.

by tomwghagger on May 23, 2011 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

never said it was a good idea

just that its common with professional players to have one or more

You answered your own implied question

If one believes protection is necessary, what would you suggest as an alternative?

I like the Marshall comparison better than Johnson

But Jeffery is still very raw. He’s big. He’s had some good games. But he’s not had one of Marshall’s 10+ catch, despite the coverage, domination games yet.

"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
