Vontaze Burfict 2012 NFL Draft prospect notes
Vontaze Burfict
6'3, 255 pounds | Linebacker | Arizona State
First word: Burfict is getting a lot of love among draft analysts and deservedly so. He is a physical specimen with both great size and quickness. The first think I noticed about Burfict was his impressive size and bulk. However, I was equally impressed with his quickness and flow to the football. His athletic ability is combined with a high motor and drive to make plays. He plays with a nastiness that results in big hits and Burfict always being around the football.
While Burfict has a ton of strengths, he also has a few areas that need improvement. Like most college football players, Burfict struggles with sound tackling technique. He often leads with his head and throws his shoulder into the ball carrier not wrapping up. He also needs to do a better job stacking and shedding. For a player of his size, Burfict looks to avoid blockers too often rather than attacking and shedding.
There just isn't many linebackers with his skill set which will make him an attractive player come next April. Obviously, Burfict needs to build on his success but all signs point to him being an early selection.
Bold statement: Vontaze Burfict will be a top 10 selection.
Games viewed: Oregon ('10), Arizona ('10), Stanford ('10)

Notes:
- Burfict is a rare player with excellent size and quickness
- He has great bulk and overall build, just an intimidating presence
- His quickness allows him to be a sideline to sideline player
- Offensive players rarely out run his angles
- He has good recognition and quickly flows to the football
- His post snap diagnosis is quick and gives him a good jump
- Burfict is a tenacious player that is always in pursuit of the football
- When he reaches the ball career he delivers a punishing hit
- The best way to describe Burfict is explosive
- He has great closing speed and gets up on the ball carrier quick
- Against Oregon, he looked very quick despite the speed on Oregon's offense
- Burfict has good blitz timing and savvy
- His lateral quickness and suddenness allows him to avoid blocks and slip past blockers
- He is a 4 down player providing good special team play
- Burfict needs to improve his tackling as he often leads with his head and doesn't wrap up
- He is a little flat in coverage and needs to gain more depth
- I would like to see him take on blockers more and use his size and strength to stack and shed

I love this guy and hoping the Ravens trade up to get him as the replacement to Ray. I’m hoping his dirty plays scare off a few teams and he can drop a little. Teams don’t put a whole lot of value on MLB’s so I’m hoping he can drop some. I wouldn’t mind trading the majority of our draft to move up because we won’t have very many roster spots anyways and I think he is the best MLB prospect since Willis.
I don't think he will be as good as Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis
those guys are in a class of their own. Both were also coached by one of the greatest ILB ever in Singletary. He may not know much about HC but damn did he make good LBs.
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
Im not competitive I just addicted to winning.
Love this hit from his first game as a freshman

did someone say he has incredible arrogance issues
bordering on character concerns?
I have read this multiple times on this website and I have no idea where it comes from.
As an alum, I follow ASU quite closely and I have never read anything about him that indicates he is a “me first” kind of guy. In general he shuns the spotlight and doesn’t seem to care about personal awards. When he won Preseason All American honors, he said that it doesn’t mean much and that he just wants to play football and win. He helped arrange players only workouts this offseason and didn’t miss a single offseason workout.
If people want to question his on-field emotion and passion that sometimes results in personal fouls, then that’s fine. It’s a problem that he needs to work on. However, arrogance and character concerns shouldn’t be an issue.

It sounds like you know a lot about him, so how is he off the field? I absolutely love him and the way he plays the game (minus the personal fouls, but love the intensity). He is probably my favorite player going into this college season and will definitely be following him closely this year.
well, I've never met the guy...
…which, absent a criminal record, is the only way I could know his off the field character. However, he hasn’t gotten in trouble in scottsdale or tempe that’s been recorded so I’d give him that benefit.

Few LB's can run OLinemen over
Maualuga and Ray Lewis come to mind…so does Burfict.

He does get lazy with his tackling
If you watch any video of him he doesn’t always tackle correctly, ends up pulling players to the ground or bouncing off runners. However this is about the only bad thing on tape, he can down right dominate some games. And I love a nasty streak in defenders, want to hit people and let them know you’re going to knock them out if they run at you.
