Build your own team

Here's a chance to play G.M. and build your own NFL team.  If you could choose any ten players to build the core of your own NFL team, five on offense and five and defense, who would you choose?  I'd go with Aaron Rodgers, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald on offense.  On the defensive side of the ball I'd take DeMarcus Ware, Ndamukong Suh, Patrick Willis, Darrelle Revis and Eric Berry.  I know this isn't exactly NFL draft related, but I was curious about other peoples team building philosophies.

He has won a Super Bowl after Spy Gate?

He lost one thanks to the single most miraculous play in NFL history.

Filming really helped there, didn’t it?

Did you even see the 2010 team? They were supposed to be a 10 win, maybe-WC, maybe-3rd-in-the-division team.

Funny how it's always fans of teams not in the clear.

Cowher:

There’s people stealing signals all the time before that," Cowher said. "You have ways to hide those things. We had wristbands for our defense. I remember trying to get offensive plays and see what the formations were. Everybody knows.

And of course the Jets camera crew getting kicked out of Gillette Stadium in the 06 Wildcard game puts them in an equally spacious glass house as in Pittsburgh.

Filming signals was never illegal.

Prior to the memo or after it came out. So stealing signals by camera is no different to stealing signals by using a lipreader, and guess what? Stealing signals has never been illegal, either.

So keep feeling cheated, at least you’ve got a couple of consolation pieces to erase the pain of being spanked by the better team, twice, as opposed to the back-to-back preseason champs, the Jets.

So, the Patriots just got in trouble for nothing. Damn you, Goodell.

Also, let me take your sound logic. The Giants were the better team when they beat that 18-0 team?

And why are you talking crap about the Jets? They sent your team home this season.

Here would be mine

Offense: Big Ben, Mike Wallace, Maurkice Pouncey, Andre Johnson, Vernon Davis
Defense: LaMarr Woodley, Haloti Ngata, Lawrence Timmons, Ndamakong Suh, Eric Berry

Reasoning: On offense I want a proven winner in Big Ben and then I want him to have one dominant OL and a lot of weapons. Wallace, Johnson, and Davis would be incredible. ON defense I want versatility and talent. Woodley is one of the best OLB’s in the league. Ngata and Suh would dominate in a 3-4 or a 4-3. Timmons can roam the field and do everything you want from an LB. Berry would allow me to have a safety roam the field and play in the box.

Give me

Offense: Brady, AP, Ryan Clady, Andre Johnson, Joe Thomas

Defense: Polamalu, Ngata, Peppers, Revis, Willis.

Protect Brady with two bookend OT’s and he can pick apart any D’s with any WR’s, and he has Andre. Put in AP and that’s an O that will break records.

The D is just the most talented players spread around to all aspects of the D, with a slight focus on age.

A bit of a tangent

But one of the guys at CJ was talking about the idea of having three running QBs a la Vick on the team. Considering that Vick gets injured, you’d often have to be using a back-up. Problem with Kolb is that Kolb is more of a traditional pocket passer where as Vick is…not. That throws the entire offense out of sync whenever Kolb enters the game. I’m curious about what you’d do with a set-up that featured Vick with his depth being Cam Newton and Tim Tebow.

It’s not the same style of mobile QB but I was talking with my friend about it and he was drooling at the sets you could use with all three of them on the field. Vick’s age would eventually lead to your contingency plan being one of the two young kids. Using a wildcat formation would actually work because it’s three starting-caliber QBs and not just a QB-converted-WR-but-being-used-as-QB-for-gadget-plays. I dunno, wonky idea I’ve been kinda wondering about for a bit.

Back on topic:
Offense: Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Whitworth (come at me), Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Brandon Pettigrew

In response to the one season or a decade

I was thinking more along the lines of a decade, but I like the idea of coming up with both options. The only changes I think I would make if it was a one year team would be to swap Polamalu for Berry and Brady for Rodgers. I’ll add that I’d run a base 4-3 even though the majority of the defensive players I listed play in a 3-4, in order to better utilize Suh, the centerpiece of my defense. I’m a Lions fan by the way. I know Ware is a rush linebacker, but I think he’d be just as effective in a 4-3. If I was running a 3-4 for my ten year team I’d take Clay Matthews over Ware.

He runs in a zone blocking scheme designed to help him avoid big hits.

Stretches, sweeps, draws designed to open up a hole and let him exploit it. But when he is asked to pick up tough yards he has shown repeatedly the ability to pick up the first down. At a rate higher than any other running back in the nfl, over 30% of his carries.

Raji up the middle, Suh collapsing the pocket from the right side, and Clay and Ware rushing off the ends?

I think I might bump Revis. Ted Thompson is my GM, so he can always find another Sam Shields to play CB. And with all the pass-rushing in that front 7, teams will run the ball 95% of the time. So I need Willis in the middle.

Here is what I would do

Picking the offense was easy.

QB: Aaron Rodgers (young and good)
OL: Jake Long, Mike Iupati, Pouncey (the steelers one), Oher (he was a really good RT which is where he would play )

The Defense is a little harder but if I can be the GM and coach I would like to run a 3-4

CB: Revis, Patrick Peterson
ILB: Patrick Willis
NT: BJ Raji
DE: Ngata

I was debating if I should pick an OLB over Ngata but I decided not to. I figured if the DL is beastly and the starting corners shutting things down the OLBs should get to the QB. With Willis stopping the run game this would be a great D.

Ware played DE in college

Matthews played more of a hybrid LB/DE position but he wan’t a true DE and Ware is a little bigger so I think he’d hold up better against the run. I think Ware could carry 270+ lbs without losing a step, I’m less sure about Matthews.

Yes, I'd move Ware to DE in a 4-3.

I think there are only a handful of elite 4-3 Ends like Freeney, Peppers and Allen and they are aging, I’d rather take Ware and convert him. I could see Matthews playing LB in a 4-3, he can cover enough not to be exploited, but unless it’s a scheme that blitzes a lot his pass rushing ability would be kind of wasted. Kind of like why I don’t get the Broncos taking Von Miller to play LB in their 4-3.

by JXNLF on Jun 7, 2011 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

SUH

I agree that Suh would be good at 3-4 End, I consided that all the defensive players I chose could transition between even and odd fronts. That would make for a very dynamic defense that could fool offenses with different looks.

I just went with 5 on each side of the ball to keep things simple, but feel free to throw in some extras. I thought about doing one with a starting 22, but I didn’t think people would want to list that many players.

Ryan – Great young QB
Jones-Drew – Best back, great at everything.
Nicks – Young and very talented.
Lewis – Best overall tight end, can block, catch, and run.
Monroe – A good young tackle, who has the potential to be a premier left tackle for years to come.

Knighton – Great player, dominating force on the center of the line.
Asumough – Tied for best corner in the league.
Revis – Tied for best corner in the league.
Smith – Very unknown great centerpiece of the defense.
Woodson – Throw him in to seal up the secondary.

Lewis – Best overall tight end, can block, catch, and run.

Pure opinion, but ok.

"No disrespect to Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara, but I just think I have better cover skills. They get tested a lot, and that’s for a reason. The other team sees something in their game that they want to attack, and me playing in the same league as Prince, we played the same teams and they didn’t attack me the same. So why does that happen?" - CB Jimmy Smith

by Mr MaLoR on Jun 9, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Ryan – totally get that, he’s very good and young to boot
Jones-Drew – beast RB, totally okay with that
Nicks – I guess he’s pretty good but I can’t see him as a true #1, something tells me he’ll regress as Bradshaw emerges
Lewis – this is definitely a big question mark for me as I see more productive TEs that can block still. I have a feeling a lot of this is based off the fact that you watch Jag games and would be confident in his abilities
Monroe – definitely a personal opinion pick I think. there are other tackles like Thomas and Long that have proven themselves and are just as young

Knighton – same as Lewis, he’s probably underrated but still not the best in the NFL
Asomugha – makes sense
Revis – makes sense, I’d like to note Asomugha is better cuz he’s not as self-centered (as far as the public knows)
Smith – again, slightly underrated but not the best MLB
Woodson – i’ve heard reports of him switching positions as he gets older but I think Reed would be a better choice as he wouldn’t have to practice for a switch since he’s dominated the position for the last decade

Woodson has basically been playing his own position for the better part of the last year.

He’s a combo CB-S-LB who is used to make havoc all over the field. With cover corners like Shields and Williams, he doesn’t have to worry about locking anyone down any more. He’s free to rush the passer, stop the run, and jump passing lanes.

Someone suggested calling it the “Woodback.”

here was my first take....
Offense: Doug Free, Logan Mankins, Maurkice Pouncey Justin Blalock, Tyron Smith,

Defense: Demarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff, Ndamakong Suh, Haloti Nagata, Von Miller

My Reasons:

Offense- Everything starts with the Offensive line. If your O-line is great then you can "plug and play" any skill positions…even QB…

Defense- Do I really have to explain?…

After a little thought, I thought if I really wanted to be nasty I could run BJ Raji instead of Ratliff….But only because BJ is ALOT younger than Ratliff….
So My DLwould be this:
DE’s- Demarcus Ware and Von Miller
DT’s- Ndamukong Suh, and Haloti Nagata
NT- B J Raji
 I would run a 5-0-6 defense, 5DL,0LB,6DB though 2 would “Line up” as LB’s
The idea is that every one of my DL can simply destroy one on one blocking and if you try and double any of them that means that someone is either coming free or is blocked by a tightend…..which means that I am free to run a 6 man zone in behind them using up to 6 cornerbacks…yeah have fun passing on that….

That's an interesting concept

I know some people over on Pride of Detroit have suggested using 5 man lines to get the best players on the field. Avril, Suh, Williams, Fairly & VandenBosch. But that’s with LBs still involved. So you’d probably want a couple of bigger strong safetys that can play in the box on running downs? Or would you have LBs for those situations?

by JXNLF on Jun 8, 2011 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Sort of

the DL would be responsible for the run(mostly) but I would have two “big Corners” (think Malcolm Jenkins/Patrick Peterson in terms of size) lining up in the middle for run support and to cover the middle.

Would be ideal for this type of scheme, almost as big as a linebacker with good all around skills. LaRon Landry is another guy that would work well and is a younger. There aren’t many 220 lb safeties that can cover.

RBs and LBs are plug and play. Behind that OL and DL it doesn’t matter who you have back there. Top WRs and DBs are tougher to come by and have a long shelf life. This team not only wins the SB this year, but 7 out of the next 10.

Peyton has shown what he can do with below average lines for years, so an all-pro OT is not relly needed. Therefore just add more weapons.

Puting Suh next to Freeney is dream cause it would force teams to keep extra blockers in or single up on one of them.

This is for the next decade...

Offense- Rodgers (QB), Jake Long (RT), Calvin Johnson (WR), Maurkice Pouncey (C ), Ryan Clady (LT)
Explanation- A great QB, Megatron to throw to, and a monster young O-Line to protect him. I did not go with a RB because I don’t think they have the same value as other positions and with that O-Line, I could rush for 1,000 yards.

Defense- Revis (CB), Berry (S), Suh (DE), Clay Matthews (OLB), Ngata (NT)
Explanation- Revis and Berry would be the foundation of a beastly defensive back unit for a long time. Suh and Matthews would give the opposing QB nightmares. And Suh and Ngata would shut down the run. I also strongly considered Willis, but I went with the monster NT instead (because I would be running the 3-4)

But he is about to turn 28 and Sitton is a few years younger and is a very good right guard. I took Hakeem Nicks over Fitzgerald for the same reason. and being a Dolphin homer, I went with Vontae. I considered Nnamdi Asomugha who is better than Vontae right now, but he is turning 30 next month…

one reason he is underrated is his inconsistency

when I watch him play it makes me think he’s a rookie because of how often he’ll just miss coverage/assignments

by vitzeng on Jun 17, 2011 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I considered Davis for my team

He would have been my Nickel if I’d listed reserves. But I saw enough of McCourty last year to like him a little more. The AFC East seems to be loaded with good defensive backs.

I’d love to see A-Rod with this kind of protection and those weapons. Beastly and versatile receiving group, plus CJ2K? And with that line? Can you say Arena League style scoring?

Then you throw in the bhe beefiest 3-man DL ever (not to mention they are all outstanding pass-rushers), the scariest pass-rushing LB corps ever, Charles Woodson, a ballhawk like Collins, and an insanely talented young group of CBs? What can you possibly do against this defense?

fun game

On Offense – Joe Thomas, Maurkice Pouncey, Calvin Johnson, Jake Long, Peyton Manning

On Defense – Suh, Berry, Mayo, Grimes, Freeney

Starting Lineup:
QB – Peyton
RB – LeSean McCoy
WR1 – Calvin Johnson
WR2 – Roddy White
WR3 – DeSean Jackson
TE – Rob Gronkowski
LT – Joe Thomas
LG – Carl Nicks
C – Maurkice Pouncey
RG – Chris Snee
RT – Jake Long

DE – Freeney
DE – Justin Tuck
DT – Suh
DT – Jay Ratliff
OLB – Jon Beason
MLB – Jerod Mayo
OLB – David Hawthorne
CB1 – Brent Grimes
CB2 – Tramon Williams
FS – Antoine Bethea
SS – Eric Berry

I didn’t pick the obvious superstars at every position but wanted to mix a little youth and upside with my vets. With Peyton slinging the ball all over the place, this defense would have to give up a lot of points to lose games. With Freeney and Suh getting a lot of extra attention, these LBs would probably set some tackling records.

by BlueVol03 on Jun 21, 2011 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

I like this idea. This would be for the Patriots

Offense
Tom Brady
Adrian Peterson
*sorry for not knowing a lot of offensive linemen
Joe Thomas
Jahri Evans (I hear good things about him)
Sebastian Vollmer (homer pick hehe)

Defense
Vince Wilfork
Ndamukong Suh
Darrelle Revis
Devin McCourty
Patrick Willis/ Jerod Mayo (it is a Belichick defense and Mayo did well last year in it)

I hope I followed the rules ok.

Why would you pick the 2nd team All-Pro center over the 1st?

Mangold is miles better than anybody else, and there are still 3 guys (at least) better than Pouncey.
