Barrett Jones 2012 NFL Draft prospect notes

Barrett Jones
6'5, 311 pounds | Guard | Alabama

First word:
Jones is a tough offensive lineman with good size and bulk.  He plays hard and works to gain good positioning.  His ability to go from stance to set allows him to gain initial positioning.  Jones is an aware and smart player who is always in the correct position.  His football IQ allows him to identify the immediate threat in pass protection.

However, Jones is a limited athlete which impacts his ability to explode into the defender.  He doesn't create a great push off the line as a result of short arms and poor hand placement.  A zone blocking scheme appears to be the ideal spot for Jones as he can gain position and seal.

Overall, it looks like Jones will be fighting for a later round grade.  He doesn't have the ability to play tackle which impacts his upside and versatility.

Bold statement: Barrett Jones is a guard only prospect and a mid round guy at best

Games viewed: LSU, Arkansas, Penn State, Florida

Barrett Jones
6'5, 311 pounds | Guard | Alabama

Notes:

  • Jones has good size and weight distribution
  • He is able to quickly get into his stance and set
  • His hands get up quickly and into the defender
  • However, he doesn't consistently get his hands inside
  • In pass coverage, Jones keeps his head on a swivel
  • He is able to anchor after initial contact and hold his ground
  • Jones plays with good balance but his limit athletic ability hinders his change of direction
  • He appears to be a good fit for at team with a zone blocking scheme
  • His short arms makes it tough for him to keep the defenders off his frame
  • Those short arms also impact his ability to velcro
  • Jones isn't a great athlete and plays stiff limiting him to the guard position

Was this written 2 years ago??????

it is funny that you say he doesn’t have the ability to play tackle but after Saban and staff put several guys at Tackle in the Spring and they weren’t dominant he went with guess who………..Barrett Jones. And another note to ruffle your feathers, We just had last years Tackle go in the first round of the Draft and he was what?? A converted Guard that they said couldn’t play Tackle. Barrett is probably one of the 10 best linemen in the country on either side of the ball period. he can play EVERY position on the line including center and that versatility is what made James Carpenter a 1st round pick and it’s the same reason Barrett will e a 1st rounder. He will be the starting Tackle for Bama this year and he’s only a Junior

reassess these thoughts

so now that Jones started all year at LT as well as playing G and C just to prove he could, was named all-sec and all-american and won the outland, what’s your take on his draft position now?
