Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Rookie Depth Chart Battles: Roy Helu

More and more NFL rookies are expected to contribute early in their careers.  However, for them to make an impact they need to beat out a veteran player.  We are going to analyze the situation of specific rookies and determine the likely hood of them winning a position battle.

Player: Roy Helu

Team: Washington Redskins

Position: Running Back

Competition: Ryan Torain, Keiland Williams, Clinton Portis, James Davis, Evan Royster

Chance of winning the battle: 40 percent

Thoughts: The Redskins appear to be in a major transition phase as several key positions lack top end starters.  We are all familiar with the failed Donovan McNabb experiment but they also have major questions at the running back position.  Clinton Portis has another injury plagued season and is unlikely to return to the team which no doubt led to the drafting of Roy Helu and Evan Royster.

Roy Helu will enter camp with a great opportunity to earn major carries.  He is the type of 1 cut running back that typically fits Mike Shanahan's system.  Helu runs downhill and is able to break tackles due to his balance and strength.  His experience and work ethic will make for an easier transition to the NFL.  While Helu might not be a game breaker but he offers good inside running and solid play.

The starting job will be open for competition but you have to figure Ryan Torain has a leg up on the competition.  Torain was drafted by Shanahan in Denver and put up decent numbers last season.  He complied 742 yards with an average of 4.5 yards per carry.  However, Torain's injury history is extensive which could open the door for Helu.  Don't count out fellow rookie Evan Royster who is Penn State's leading rusher and another Shanahan type back.

Here’s what the good people at HH think about the RB situation.

Torain is opening day starter, Helu takes over mid-season, and Royster may be a prime candidate for the PS.
