An early/Wrong 2012 mock draft Enjoy!
Im bored and as someone has already stated this is mockingthedraft so what am i to do.... yes a mock draft
Im keeping the same order as 2011 to avoid controversy and I will include any trades i think could happen. Both of these points obviously will be incorrect next year.
1. Carolina Panthers - TRADE - Arizona Cardinals trade their 1st and 2nd round picks in 2012 and their 1st round pick in 2013 for Carolinas 1st round pick.
Arizona Selects Andrew Luck QB Stanford - Arizona has everything on their team to make them succesful, everything accept a QB and andrew luck could be something special.
2. Denver broncos - Jerrel Worthy DT Michigan - Denver didn't address the DT position at all last year which is a major need for their team, and worthy has a chance to be a big impact player at the position.
3. Buffalo bills - Matt Barkely QB USC -Ryan fitzpatrick isnt the long term answer for the bills at QB, he played well last year in some matches but isnt going to win you a superbowl, Matt barkley has the potential to be the best QB prospect next year and if Andrew luck wasnt in the draft could easily be the first pick overall.
4. Cincinnati bengals - Matt Kalil OT USC - Kalil can plug right in at the left tackle position and gives them an instant upgrade, and will protect daltons blind side for years.
5. Carolina from Arizona – Alshon Jeffrey WR South Carolina – For Newton to succeed he’s going to need weapons around him, he already has a very good running back combo and a solid O-line so all he needs is a go to receiver. Jeffrey can go up and get any pass and has shown flashes of genius.
6. Celeveland trades its pick to Seattle for their 1st, 2nd and 5th in 2011 and their 1st and 4th in 2012.
Seattle - Landry Jones QB Oklahoma - Seattle is another team in desperate need of a QB and cleveland seems to love trading its picks for more players. So pete carrol gets his Franchise QB.
7. 49ers – Dre Kirkpatrick CB Alabama – the 49ers passed on Amukamara last year but they still need a major upgrade in their secondary and Dre Kirkpatrick is probabl the best player on the nation’s top D and the top CB prospect in the nation.
8. Tennessee titans – Quinton Couples DE UNC – the UNC DE machine is in full swing again next year with, across from morgan the titans have nothing and to win that divison you need to get to P manning.
9. Dallas Cowboys – Jayron Hosley CB Virginia Tech – Hosley had 9 ints last year and the cowboys are desperately in need of some CBs.
10. Redskins – Trade – San diego chargers trade their 1st,2nd and 5th round selection for the redskins 1st and 6th
San Diego chargers select – Donte Paige moss DE/OLB UNC – at 245 lbs paige-moss is an ideal player for the 3-4 olb position, he had 7 sacks last year, the chargers need a pass rusher he could be the answer to all their problems.
11. Houston Texans – Alfonzo Dennard Nebraska – The Texans need all the help they can get at the cornerback position end of.
12. Minnesota Vikings – Jonathon martin OT Stanford – The Vikings need to fill in needs in their O-line or ponders going to be on his ass more times than a dog with worms.
13. Detroit Lions – Brandon Jenkins DE Florida state – If this happens id be crapping myself if I was an opposing QB playing against the lions they could easily have the best D line in the league.
14. St Louis Rams – Justin Blackmon WR oklohoma state – Sam Bradford gets his No1 receiver and the rams can actually start winning more games with a viable QB WR combo for years to come.
15. Miami Dolphins – Nick Foles QB Arizona – Miami needs a QB and if Foles has a very good year he could push himself into the first round.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars – Cliff harries CB Oregon – Jacksonville needshelp at CB and in a dvision with as premier passer that help needs to be now.
17. Oakland raiders – Reilley Reiff OT Iowa – This pick makes sense Reiff can plug in at RT, hes athletic yet powerful and could eventually be their starting LT.
18. Washington redskins – Trent Richardson RB Alabama – Richardson is a good back who will instantly upgrade the redskins offense, this pick could be a QB but I believe the skins will find a veteran once free agency starts.
19. New york giants – Manti Te’o MLB Notre Dame – The giants need an MLB Goff is good but hes not a starter, they need a constant starter who can boss the defence an Te’o is the guy.
20. Tampa bay Buccaneers – Zach Brown OLB UNC – this pick makes sense as it’s a big need for the Bucs and I think brown is the best OLB in next years draft,
21. Kansas City chiefs – Vontaz Burfict ILB Arizona st – the chiefs seem set at pass rushing LB now all they need is a good ILB and thie LB core is set for years.
22. Indianapolis colts – Jeff Fuller WR texas A&M - Fuller was a monstor his junior year and there are high hopes for him, this gives peyton a viable no1 as Reggies getting a bit long in the tooth.
23. Philidelphia Eagles – Chase Minifield CB Virginia – Samuels is getting older and will need replacing within the next few years so why not develop Minifield along side samuels.
24. Patriots from saints – Courtney Upshaw OLB Alabama – The patriots need a pass rush and Upshaw is a pass rushing LB in a college 3-4 he has been a very large contributor to one of the best Defenses in College. This is a pick the patriots should make but undoubtedly they won’t because they will trade it.
25. Cleveland from seattle – Lamichael James RB Oregon – The browns have Hillis as their big power back now if they add james they have a deadly one two punch.
26. Cleveland from Atlanta – Michael Floyd WR Notre Dame – With their two picks in round one the browns just made their Offense a hell of a lot better. If Floyd can stay out of trouble hes set to have a good year.
27. Baltimore Ravens – Michael Brewster C Ohio state – irk will be 35 next year so the ravens will look to add a very talented C, they can hope that Brewster turns out like Mangold for the jets who also went to Ohio State.
28. New England Patriots – Robert Lester FS Alabama – Again this pick will probably be traded but it’s a pick the patriots should make, Lester is set for a big year in Alabama and Merriweather isn’t working out in NE.
29. Chicago Bears – Ryan Broyles WR Oklohoma – IfJay cutler gets a legit no1 reciever he can be scary good.
30. New york Jets – Bruce Irvin West Virginia – Irvin has great speed and has a variety of pass rushing moves and his production last year was amazing, if the jets don’t make this pick then Mike tenenbaum is gunshy after that Gholston debacle.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers – Nate Potter G Boise st – The steelers always seem to need help on the O-line and potter is an instant upgrade at RG.
32. Marcus Forston – DE Miami – This is a case of BPA and filling a need. Forston could easily go higher than this if he has a good year, but past problems may lead to a slide down draft boards.

I see Kalil mocked to the Bengals often, but that would only happen if after this year Andre Smith is pretty much completely proven to be a bust.
Because he sure as hell isn’t replacing Andrew Whitworth at LT anytime soon.

Pitt and Oakland
Pitt tends to go for bigger OL, and RG is usually the power position. Potter seems to be more of a ZBS player.
If Campbell is a guard, and Veldheer a center, I think that makes Reiff a cornerback for Oakland.
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
Veldheer is the starting LT
he played C for one game. He will be a boarderline pro-bowler at left tackle this year. Calling it.
Veldheer – Barkesdale – Wisniewski – Campbell – Rieff

I guess I should explain why I think that
Colbert does a good job of recruiting to what his coaches are looking for. Tomlin loves position flexibility, especially on the OL. I can’t see us drafting a straight up guard unless he doubles as a C or T.

definitely think that's pretty much impossible
it depends on the board of course, also if you’ve somehow found a gem in the middle rounds in recent past drafts. But I know the Steelers were very much ready to draft Mike Iupati if he was there in that draft, and also ready to draft Mike Pouncey if he was there.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
In 2010 the Steelers wanted Pouncey badly. They didn’t really keep it a secret either. You can play the what if game, but that’s the truth.
This year, sure they were considering Mike, but when push came to shove and some other people they liked dropped, they gave up on him. Also, I think the fact that Maurkice is already on the team makes that a special case scenario. Potter isn’t a Pouncey.

I wasn't arguing for Potter
he’s more of a tackle anyway. Just in the future I doubt the Steelers will never draft a G again. They’ve done so before and considering they’ll always be a team that likes to run the ball, if a G they like finally falls to them I doubt they pass. 2 years in a row they would’ve drafted a G but the draft didn’t pan out that way.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I’m not saying they won’t draft a G in the first. I just do not think they will unless he can do more is unexpectedly drops. The Steelers are all about value picks (not need) and I don’t think that guards often outweigh other important positions like T. So possible? Yes. Likely? No.
And you keep mentioning the before and neither of those relate to this same situation. Kevin Colbert, who has the biggest input into their big board, was not on the team when Faneca was drafted. And with Simmons, that pick was pushed by Cowher’s style of play, not Tomlin’s.
Furthermore, the Steelers have been shifting heavily towards a passing team over the last two years with Ben behind center. They don’t really run it as much as they used to.
2 years in a row they would’ve drafted a G but the draft didn’t pan out that way.
This is wrong. They wanted Maurkice in 2010 and no one else. They made it abundantly clear throughout time leading up to the draft. If you do not believe me I can look up the articles for you that had Tomlin and Colbert swooning over him. As for last year, like I said, Mike was a special case. And, he has position flexibility.

I feel the need to defend this
I pickied potter because i think hes an ideal pitt player… however im not a steelers fan and will not know nearly as much as u but let me explain, Potter can play pretty much any position on the Oline and thats something the steelers like in players as lets face it they dont have much depth on the oline and just because i put him as a guard doesnt mean theyle play him there, i realise this is almost definately not going to happen but its was just someone i thought the steelers would like
Then it’s a good pick. I haven’t watched any game tape on any of the juniors and won’t until the season starts up, so I know nothing about Potter. If he does have that type of flexibility than it is definitely a guy the Steelers would like. Tomlin likes that flexibility so he can ideally maintain one less OL and use the extra spot to keep young talent or extra players in another needed spot.

They did not even give other teams time to pitch them a trade.
“He was just that good,” director of football operations Kevin Colbert explained simply, time after time.
Everyone I know, close to the Steelers lamented that Pouncey was a foregone conclusion the week before the draft. It really was not a secret.

I never suggested Iupati was #1 on their board
just that they would’ve drafted him and was on their board. Just that the idea they’ll never draft a G in the 1st round is far fetched.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Iupati might have been on their list, but it didn’t matter with Pouncey still on the board. I’m not sure how that validates your idea that the Steelers would draft a G in the first. This is what I have said and you have ignored:
1) The Steelers draft on value and not need. Just because they need a guard, does not mean they will take on in the first.
2) Tomlin likes position flexibility when possible, particularly for OL/DL/DBs. I even said they would draft a G as long as he could also play C or T in a pinch.
3) Colbert did not draft Faneca. Tomlin was not the coach when Simmons was drafted.
Also, you suggesting they would draft Iupati IS directly implying that they would have preferred him over Pouncey. If they had taken him they would have been passing on Maurkice.

His whole point is that they are willing to draft guards,
and wouldn’t hesitate to take one if the situation is right. That situation wasn’t right in this case because they had a player higher on their board fall to them.

I also edit things at Ridiculous Upside. Check it out.
My whole point is that it is very unlikely for them to draft a G in the first based on how they draft, how they rank talent, and because they don’t weigh OL that highly. Since Colbert has been with the Steelers, they’ve taken two OL in the first, despite having a notoriously shitty line since 2006.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
you're saying one thing
I’m saying another. You’re acting like I’m saying something different when its not what I said.
You can think you know the steelers as well as you want, but saying they won’t draft a G, when they have and probably would have the past 2 years if certain players fell…is extremely laughable.
And that’s all I’ve been saying, and you’ve done absolutely nothing to discount it.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Like I said, you have read absolutely nothing I have said. Here is a direct quote from above:
I’m not saying they won’t draft a G in the first. I just do not think they will unless he can do more is unexpectedly drops. The Steelers are all about value picks (not need) and I don’t think that guards often outweigh other important positions like T. So possible? Yes. Likely? No.
I discounted your “have drafted a G” argument because it is almost completely irrelevant to the team now. Colbert did not draft Faneca. So, why even bring that up? It makes absolutely no sense. Simmons was a Cowher pick. He liked to run, run, pass. No matter what. Tomlin is not like that at all. Tomlin is more balanced and likes defense and skill positions more. The way Cowher evaluated talent IS NOT THE SAME as the way Tomlin does. So Simmons is also completely irrelevant to now. Discounted.
They “would have in the past two years”. If that isn’t subjective, I don’t know what is. Was DE/OLB one of their big needs this year? It wasn’t even a top 5 need, but there was Heyward. No one mocked was mocking that. To assume that Iupati was going to be their draft pick is a complete guess and like I said, he was no where on their radar with Pouncey alive.
With Mike Pouncey, he has position flexibility and he is the brother of Maurkice who was a rookie pro bowler. I’d be shocked if they didn’t look at him. However, they never had a shot at him. It’s like saying they also considered Patrick Peterson. A pipe dream is called that for a reason. Discounted.
I don’t know why I just wrote all that because you probably won’t read it and then express how annoyed you are.

Ravens
In real life if it played out like this I would hope the Ravens would trade up for Burfict because we need to find Ray’s replacement and we don’t have a whole lot of other needs. Center would be one of the few needs and even though it’s not a flashy pick we could end up going Brewster because I think he is the best C in the draft. I really do think we try to get a MLB in the 1st next year though. Hightower from Bama would be another possibility.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."

I love hightower and definately can see the ravens going after an ILB but think brewster is a BPA and a big need pick, maybe if you trade down to the early 2nd you pick up hightower then,
Manti Te-o' is great
but you can’t pass over Vontaze Burfict, if your the Giants. You can’t.

If Dre Kirkpatrick is the nations best player on the nations best D
Then Alabama definitely does not have the nations best defense. Either way, Potter probably isn’t the best pick for the Steelers, especially if there’s a tackle like Mike Adams available. I am one of the Steelers fans that would rather see Gilbert @ Guard than Tackle though.

Could definitely see Indy going with Fuller if he has another strong season.
Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." Upton Sinclair
Fuller is good. As is Broyles. I also think there might be an outside shot on Mike Brewster if the Colts like him. Saturday is entering the final year of his contract and McClendon is still training to be center and could be more natural at guard.
I don't think Indy will go reciever in the first
The WR position is deep this year and a team could get a real nice sleeper into the third. I see Indy going BPA in this year’s draft at the moment, now that could change, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Indy went with Ray Ray Sanders if he declares, Mike Brewster, or depending on where they pick a QB.
Ray Ray Armstrong?
the Colts don’t usually take underclassmen. The big argument for a WR is that they might be replacing Reggie Wayne, which means they need someone with #1 potential who is ready to contribute early. Even if they keep Wayne they could lose Garçon and/or Gonzalez, leaving at least one hole in their top 3 WRs.
Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

by shake n bake on Jul 11, 2011 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
no, not usually
but Armstrong is great, and we have a need for a saftey, he very well could be the BPA when the Colts pick. If the Colt’s lose Gonzalez, it’s not much of a loss, the offense is quite capable without him, as Collie has shown. Now we would be in real trouble if we lose both Gonzalez and Collie, unless White steps it up this year (pulling for him but don’t think he will). I know the argument is for Indy to go WR in the first, and it makes sense we will need a WR in 2012, their is a lot of ambiguity at the spot, however this draft class has a lot of talent at WR so I don’t think the Colts go WR in the first. Oh, and I like the Jeff Fuller pick as well
I haven't gotten a chance to watch Armstrong yet, but from what I've read he seems more of a potential guy than production
which obviously could chance, but might be another point against him given how much the Colts love guys that produced in college.
Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

Seeing as there are few other texans ppl on this blog
Ill have to champion the cause.
No MOAR Rookie CB’s for the Texans!
We took Kareem Jackson(1st) in the first last year.
Brandon Harris(2nd) and Roc Carmichael(3rd) this year.
Not to mention Jason Allen(former 1st)
as well as a slew of other dudes on the roster.
Add to that a potential free agent pickup this year and we should be set at the position..
Now if you wanted to give us a FS? I’d be cool with that. We have Glover Quinn at one Safety position and from what I hear Wade likes twin coverage safetys in the backfield.
Want to give us a ILB? We have Brian Cushing and DeMeco Ryans currently with little good depth there. DeMeco is coming off injury and Cushing looked lost at times at MLB last year. Till the season starts itd be ok to mock us a first or second round ILB.
Nose Tackle? We currently have little to no depth and no experience at the position. Heres to hoping Earl Mitchell can hold it down at the position but the combo of him and cody is definately a question mark on the team. I think we draft one in the early rounds next year.
Oline? This was one of the stronger positions on the team last year. Still I cant help but feel that more depth along the line would be well appreciated and could make this unit even more effective.
WR? Would be awesome to bring in another guy who can take some of the pressure off Andre. He’s getting older too so might want to start looking for his replacement who can take over in 3-4 years.
So the Texans Wish list(in no particular order really): DT, FS ILB, Oline, WR
Dont really need: QB, RB, DE, OLB, CB

No NT’s are worth a first rounder next year unless theres a few surprises in college fb this year and your not going to pick a 1st round WR in my opinion, dont think theres any FS worth it this high and the Safety class looks to be just as bad as last year, the other points are valid but just dont rate any of the texans CBs very highlly
All the texans CB's are super young
I think the Cb’s need a little more time to prove themselves.
Im hoping Harris turns into a Flowers lite type player.
Harris can be a serviceable Nickle im hoping.
Jason Allen I thought actually looked pretty decent at times.
I agree that none of our DB’s are good right now, but we really are much more likely to bring in a veteran player rather than draft another rookie CB.
"Slammed that hoe on the counter like I just got 35 on the domino table!!"

Awesome pick for the Chiefs
Especially that late, but I could see Burfict fall there because of work ethic/instinct concerns.

Super sexy
If we can get an OLB worth a damn across from him we may just have the best LB corp in the business, with the best 2ndary behind them hopefully.

At this point there is no way you can come close to the Steelers LB corp.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

We already have one of the top ILBs and OLBs in the game
Adding Vontaze and another great OLB while the Steelers begin to get old and fade definitely puts us close

We have one of best who is fading in Farrior
And young blood in Timmons ready to replace him. Timmons already is special. Throw in Woodley and Harrison and your kinda on the outside looking in.

Do you feel the same about Roethlisberger and Mendenhall?

Overblown and taken out of context
Mendenhall has come out and sayed he is okay with it, and supposedly Harrison has talked to Ben about it. I don’t see a problem.

Harrison and Farrior aren't getting any younger
I do like Woodley though he is a bit inconsistent, but Timmons is a damn good player.
Hali and DJ are both top 5 at their respective positions and in a few years while we continue to add talent you could be on the outside looking in :D

Well, when Farrior or Harrison slow down, then you can talk about having a better LB group.

Like I said a couple years
Shoot Harrison might be on his way out of Pittsburgh as early as next year.
And Farrior has already started to slow down.

He has? Over 100 tackles and 6 sacks. That seems pretty good to me. And Harrison isn’t going anywhere. He is the best all around OLB in the league. You don’t just give that away.

You should sell before the high point though.
Ensures there’s still a market for his services.
This year, of course not. Probably not, anyway. He is coming off a few surgeries. But if his back up is showing signs he can play, and the coaches know there’s only one or two years left at an elite level, then you can afford to get rid of him. Nothing worse than holding on for a few years too many and watching your team suffer.

You don’t sell a player who is playing better than anyone at his position. You just don’t.
I’m curious, do you even know who his back up is? He only played 43 snaps last year and spent a good portion of his rookie campaign sidelined with an injury. When he did play, he played almost strictly pass rush. He wasn’t involved in a lot of the more complex zone blitz schemes that would see him dropping into coverage, like James Harrison does very well. I’m not sure where you gathered that he showed signs he could “play” let alone replace a player the caliber of James Harrison.

I didn't say trade him,
I said you trade before he slips. No one’s giving up a first for an average player.
Of course, if the back up is only an average player, there’s no point trading the starter if he’s average too (which is probably only a few years away)
"Perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me." Mayor Adam West
Has Ray Lewis slowed down some?
If you look at the stat sheet no, but he clearly has. Same goes for Farrior.
And all reports say that because of Harrison’s comments and general attitude its more likely he leaves then stays in Pitt. Sorry man its just what I’ve heard, and on the wrong side of 30 he may just start to slow down too.

He probably stays,
Until they know what they have in Worilds.

Well, you were wrong. I have no idea where you heard that. Rooney is not even planning on suspending him.
Ray Lewis is still playing damn good football. Sure, they might be a bit slower, but they are both still smart enough to be in the right place.

The Steelers already have a top ILB in the game and two of the top OLBs in the game. The only question I put out there is how long can Farrior last and is Stevenson Slyvester an avid replacement? We will see.
You may be close, but I still think we own the crown until someone proves otherwise.

Bucs
I would love to have Burfict at that spot instead of Brown
If it's lonely at the top, I'd rather be alone
cause the closest people to ya, the ones who gonna do you wrong
I hate saying "no way we take that guy"
but for the Redskins I think it’s highly unlikely that they go after a RB in the 1st rd. They have Ryan Torain who was a pretty good back last year & drafted Roy Helu in this past draft. Also Mike Shannahan is known for drafting late rd. RB gems. A NT, QB or help on their Offensive line (Michael Brewster ??) would make more sense. I agree that the Redskins will find a QB in Free Agency but at some point they will need to draft that elusive “franchise” QB
I know
Yes shannahan is ment to find gems in later rounds but ilook at the redskins anthey need a premier back, and the whole QB situation could be the same as last year where shannahan doesnt think theres anyone worth taking that early and trades back to get more value, also i agree they definately need an NT but cant see anyone who is a true NT thats worth a 1st rounder next year in my opinion, it was a kinda small need but BPA pick with the redskins i think
Browns
I don’t see a RB so early in this draft for them. They still have to see what they have in Hardesty during a season.
Stop with Worthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please, yes DT is a need but there are other needs and players who have actually played up to or near to their potential more worthy of the pick.
If you reply to a comment/post/fanshot of mine, I will more likely then not respond to it, unless you come off like a d-bag.
I dunno man
Worthy’s main problem seems to be hand usage, the fact that he gets double and tripled most of the time yet still puts up the stats says he’s playing up to potential.

If the Lions go DL again after drafting 13th
There will be rioting in the streets here. Especially with Burfict, Reiff,Teo,Brewster, et al still on the board. I know they go BPA, but three straight DL would be insane. Unless Coples falls to them, in which case they have to take the value at 13.
I'm so ahead of my time, my parents haven't met yet
As a Cardinals fan
I’m guessing you don’t like Kevin Kolb much?
Hopefully, you’re wrong, and Kevin Kolb does amazing this season, but if you (unfortunately) aren’t wrong, I think I can live with Andrew Luck in Cardinal red.
