Billy Winn 2012 NFL Draft prospect notes

Billy Winn
6'4, 295 pounds | Defensive line | Boise State

First word:
As the football program at Boise State continues to improve so will their list of highly rated draft prospects.  This past draft saw the likes of Austin Pettis and Titus Young receiving a ton of draft love.  Expect to see quarterback Kellen Moore's name discussed come draft time but more as a non-prospect.

Billy Winn appears to be the top NFL prospect on Broncos. He is an explosive defensive lineman that does a good job at disrupting the offense.  His best attribute is his ability to get into the backfield and create pressure.  Winn shows a great 2nd gear that helps him close and make plays.  He is always around the football thanks to his physical skills and high motor.  Winn looks to be a very good 3 technique prospect especially for a team looking to create pressure.

Winn boasts a lot of talent but has some deficiencies as well.  He doesn't do a great job holding his ground against double teams.  Winn doesn't appear to have the anchor necessary to play two gap football which limits  his versatility.  However, spending more time in the weight room could improve his ability to hold at the point of attack.

Overall, Winn shows the skills and effort needed to be a legit NFL prospect.  Another productive season followed by good workout numbers could push him into the 1st round.

Bold statement: Winn could work his way into the first round with a team looking for a 3 technique

Notes:

  • Winn has a nice build with thick lower body
  • He is really quick off the ball and possesses an exceptional burst
  • His short area burst allows him to close on the football
  • Winn's quick hands help keep blockers off of his frame
  • He does a nice job of delivering a jolt by rolling his hips and exploding into the lineman
  • Winn has a really good motor and is always in pursuit of the football
  • In the run game, Winn showed some ability to anchor but is much better when asked to shoot the gap
  • He needs to do a better job of consistently getting inside hand placement

Chance he could play DE for a 1 gap 3-4 team?

I'm a huge Winn fan however, I respectfully disagree with your comment

OT Nate Potter will most likely go first for the Broncos and he’s definitely a first round guy. Billy should be too, but I would be surprised to see him get picked up before Potter.

Billy has lined up (and has done quite well) at DE for us before and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up making a long career out of the position in the NFL.
