Jonathan Massaquoi 2012 NFL Draft prospect notes

First word: Every year more and more players are slapped with the tweener tag.  These players make it tough on evaluators because they lack a true position.  In the case of undersized defensive ends, it is tough to project their ability to play linebacker and play in coverage.

Jonathan Massaquoi is definitely an undersized defensive end that I see as a linebacker only.  He appears the have the quickness and fluidity to make the transition to linebacker.  At Troy, Massaquoi is asked to drop into coverage from time to time.  When in coverage, he shows fluid hip movement and quickness.  Massaquoi's best attribute is his ability to create pressure.  He is quick off the ball and is able to flatten out around the edge.  His passing rushing arsenal is pretty deep as he can use both speed and rush moves.  He does an excellent job of using leverage to get under the blocker and get a push.

This biggest concerns with Massaquoi is his ability to make the transition to linebacker and hold up against the run.  Massaquoi has some experience dropping into coverage but more time is needed to develop those skills.  His lack of bulk and size make it tough for him to defend the run.  He looks to avoid blockers rather than attacking and shedding.  There are also times when Massaquoi doesn't give 100% effort which is something teams will categorize as a concern.

Massaquoi is a linebacker prospect playing at defensive end.  He doesn't have the frame to add bulk and develop into a defensive line prospect.  However, his ability to rush the passer is something NFL teams cannot ignore.  He reminds me a lot of Dontay Moch.

Bold statement: Massaquoi will only be looked at as a linebacker

• Massaquoi is undersized as a defensive end and doesn't appear to meet his listed weight of 250lbs
• He is a very quick and explosive player
• His ability to keep his pads low allow him to employ a good bull rush
• The name of Massaquoi's game is suddenness which allows him to make plays
• Massaquoi has some experience dropping into coverage and is fluid enough to hold up
• He doesn't have a great awareness or football IQ
• Massaquoi takes poor angles to the football and doesn't quickly recognize plays developing
• His lack of size makes it very difficult for him to hold at the point of attack
• Once engaged with an offensive lineman, Massaquoi struggles to disengage
• He isn't always giving 100% and took some plays off
