2012 NFL Mock Draft: Dove 1.0
The College football season is very close to kicking off so it seemed like a good time to put out my 1st 2012 Mock Draft. One of the hardest things with this early of a mock draft is the fact that no NFL games have been played making it a pure guess on the draft order. I used the created draft order from the guys at NFL Draft Scout who also solicited the help of an NFL GM. Everyone should keep in mind that this early in the year player's draft stocks are very fluid and will change a lot before the draft. Be sure to check out our Prospect Notes for a good look at each player.
1. Washington Redskins- Andrew Luck- QB- Stanford
- Luck is the unquestioned top prospect and also fits a need for the Redskins. This would be a dream scenario as the current roster has no long term answer at the position.
2. Cincinnati Bengals- Quinton Coples- DE- UNC
- The Bengals have a few young defensive ends with upside but none with the talents of Coples. He could be the next dominant pass rusher in the NFL.
3. Carolina Panthers- Alshon Jeffery- WR- South Carolina
- Steve Smith appears to be sticking around but is getting older and there isn't much else on the roster. Jeffery's size and leaping ability will have a tremendous impact on the development of Cam Newton.
4. Denver Broncos- Landry Jones- QB- Oklahoma
- Tebow fans will be calling for my head but this offseason only strengthens my belief that the Denver brass doesn't see Tebow as a legit NFL quarterback.
5. Minnesota Vikings- Jonathan Martin- OT- Stanford
- The Vikings are starting Colts castoff Charlie Johnson at left tackle. Martin is the top tackle prospect in the draft and could anchor the Minnesota line for years to come.
6. Miami Dolphins- Nick Foles- QB- Arizona
- Foles' draft stock is all over the place but I feel the is a legit NFL prospect. He reminds me of Blaine Gabbert but with more down the field accuracy. Unless Chad Henne really has a good season the Dolphins will target a quarterback early in 2012.
7. Buffalo Bills- Matt Kalil- OT- USC
- Do the Bills feel that Matt Barkley is going to be a star? That is the question but I feel they need to address the offensive tackle position before adding a quarterback. They just benched their starter at left tackle and filled the spot with a benched guard.
8. Cleveland Browns- Donte Paige- Moss- DE- UNC
- The Browns are making the move to the 4-3 system and need pass rushers. Paige-Moss is very underrated and has the potential to develop into a pass rushing force.
9. Arizona Cardinals- Brandon Jenkins- OLB/DE- Florida State
- Arizona is relying on an aging Joey Porter, mid round picks Sam Acho, and O'Brien Schofield to provide a pass rush. Jenkins has the quick burst and speed to be an effective edge rusher from the outside linebacker position.
10. Seattle Seahawks- Matt Barkley- QB- USC
- Seattle is gambling on Tavaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst this season and its unlikely it will work out. Pete Carroll has no issue bringing in players he is familiar with and at this point Barkley is also the best available quarterback.
11. Houston Texans- Justin Blackmon- WR- Oklahoma State
- Andre Johnson is a great reciever and has battled double teams his entire career. Its about time the Texans give him some help. The combination of Blackmon and Johnson would be deadly.
12. Tennesse Titans- Manti Te'o- LB- Notre Dame
- Tennessee lost Stephen Tulloch to the Lions this offseason and could use an elite talent at the linebacker position. Te'o can cover a ton of ground and is a good leader.
13. San Francisco 49ers- Dre Kirkpatrick- CB- Alabama
- The 49ers were mentioned as a team pursuing Nnamdi Asomugha but were unable to land the prize free agent. Loosing out on Asomugha and Nate Clements going to Cinncy has left a hole in the secondary. Kirkpatrick is the best corner prospect in the draft and fills a big need.
14. Oakland Raiders- Mike Adams- OT- Ohio State
- Looking at the Raiders roster, it is apparent that they have talent at almost every position. However, a big weakness appears to be that left tackle position. The Raiders have been trying to fill the spot with mid round selections but have the opportunity here to add more talent.
15. Chicago Bears- Mike Brewster- C- Ohio State
- Olin Kruetz has moved on leaving a major hole at the center position. Roberto Garza will be a decent fill in this season but he is 32 years old and not the long term solution.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars- Stephon Gilmore- CB- South Carolina
- Gilmore is a nice fit for the Jaguars who will be looking to improve their secondary.
17. Kansas City Chiefs- Trent Richardson- RB- Alabama
- Kansas City has employed a two back system using Jamal Charles and Thomas Jones. Jones is a good in between the tackles runner but is on the downside of his career. Richardson would be a great replacement for Jones and compliment to Charles.
18. New York Giants- Vontez Burfict- LB- Arizona State
- The middle linebacker spot has been a weakness for several years and adding Burfict would make it a strength. He has had some character concerns pop up but there is no denying his talents.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Cyrus Gray- RB- Texas A&M
- I need another year before I really trust LeGarrette Blount. However, even if he continues to produce Gray would add that game breaking ability Blount lacks.
20. Detroit Lions- Alfonzo Dennard- CB- Nebraska
- The Lions still need help at corner and after passing on Prince Amukamara they get his former teammate.
21. St. Louis Rams- Jeff Fuller- WR- Texas A&M
- I didn't completely agree with the Rams strategy to bring in two mid round recievers in 2011. I think they will still be looking for a big time playmaker come April.
22. San Diego Chargers- Zach Brown- LB- UNC
- Brown is too talented to pass up here as he would bring some explosiveness to the Chargers linebacking corps.
23. Philadelphia Eagles- Jerel Worthy- DT- Michigan State
- Cullen Jenkins was a nice offseason addition but he has struggled staying healthy. If he doesn't remain on the field this season Worthy would be a nice young replacement.
24. Cleveland Browns (from ATL)- Kendall Reyes- DT- Connecticut
- Any defense that hopes to be successful needs production from their front four. Cleveland added Jabaal Sheard and Phil Taylor last season and now add Donte Paige-Moss and Kendall Reyes. Reyes' quickness and penetration will complement Taylor's skills.
25. Indianapolis Colts- Brandon Thompson- DT- Clemson
- One of these drafts the Colts will take a big run stuffing defensive tackle in the 1st round. Thompson is a skilled defensive tackle that has the ability to stuff the run and push the pocket.
26. Dallas Cowboys- Chase Minnifield- CB- Virgina
- Unless Terrence Newman and Mike Jenkins find their game the Cowboys will be looking for replacements.
27. Baltimore Ravens- Courtney Upshaw- LB- Alabama
- Ray Lewis is slowing down so bringing in a young protege would be a good idea.
28. New England Patriots (from NO)- Vinny Curry- DE- Marshall
- New England continues to stock pile draft picks and talent. This makes it difficult to project what direction they will head but adding a player with pass rushing ability is always a good bet.
29. New England Patriots- Bruce Irvin- OLB- West Virginia
- Adding both Irvin and Curry would bring a ton of quickness to the defense.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers- Kelechi Osemele- OL- Iowa State
- Pittsburgh is another team that has a ton of talent but could use some help along the offensive line. Osemele is a big and powerful player that could play either guard or right tackle.
31. Green Bay Packers- Devin Taylor- OLB/DE- South Carolina
- In the 2011 draft, Green Bay didn't add someone with the potential to bring pressure. However, 2012 could be the year and Taylor has great quickness and the ability to threaten the edge.
32. New York Jets- David DeCastro- G- Stanford
- Vlad Ducasse has not really emerged as the long term answer at guard. This season will determine his future but if he falters someone like DeCastro would be a great replacement.

I think Burifict is a solid prospect
but I also think Jon Goff is in incredible shape and ready to really take his game to the next level. Even if somehow he doesn’t make it, which I doubt at this point, Greg Jones looks like a future starter somewhere and Mark Herzlich supposedly is close to his pre-cancer athleticism…so again, doubt that Burfict is going there.
I wouldn’t mind Dennard there actually. Also Devin Taylor seems like a JPP type freak, so wouldn’t mind another one of them either.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Of course we need to see how the season plays out but Burfict is a physical freak.. Taylor needs to add some weight to hold up at DE but that might end up being his best position.

We liked the Burfict pick before camp started
But the surprise of camp has been the linebacker play. Greg Jones (6th) and Spencer Paysinger (UDFA-Oregon) are pretty much locks to make the roster. Herzlich (UDFA) is not far behind. Both Jones and Herzlich are getting reps at MLB behind Goff. We also have Dillard, but his roster spot is in jeopardy.

I was admittedly wrong about JPP
actually, I don’t know if it’s been long enough to call it a success but the early signs are looking very promising… just one more coin in the treasure chest that is NYG DE’s
I don't think there's any way he's a bust at this point aside from injury
from day one he was never this project, boom or bust type that he was made out to be.

Is he still rotating in with Osi and Justin Tuck on the other end
cuz it must be hard to factor in time for Kiwanuka also
Giants D-line rotation
While Osi is out JPP is starting. And playing very well. Osi will not be extended past 2012.
But the rotation is that on passing downs, Tuck moves inside to DT. Under Fewell, the true DT has been playing the 0 and Tuck can line up on either side of him. Then Kiwanuka or JPP can play LDE, with the other guy as a sub. Not sure the details this year since Kiwanuka is starting at SAM, but he will be expected to be a pass rusher too. My guess is that JPP will be the standard LDE, Kiwi the sub + SAM.
Team Okpokowuruk
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
Kiwi's playing LB most of the time
as for JPP he played a lot last year so I’m sure they’ll find ways to get him on the field regardless of who’s healthy

Yes to Dennard
Also Minnifield, or maybe Fuller.
Giants have options at MLB. Thomas and Ross are free agents at CB, and we don’t even know who the 4th would be. At WR, they have to lock up Manningham, and Hixon and the young guys have to prove themselves.

As far as the Broncos go
I guarantee they don’t have a top 5 pick. Not with Orton at QB this year. Team is much improved. They will be at least 8-8

Really?
You just gave Colon a big contract and drafted Gilbert, who is a RG before a LT. So I can see a LT, but do you think a G/RT would fit in the 1st?
Team Okpokowuruk
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
Kemo could be upgraded.
And when Gilbert moves to LT we’ll need someone to take his place

Did not know Kemo was on the outs. That’s a big money issue as well.

"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
Its not so much he is on the outs
So much as if a possible upgrade is there we’d have no problem snatching him up. Unless Kemo gets so consistency.

I like Upshaw, but don’t most have him playing OLB in the NFL? I do think we go MLB though.

that terrible defense will be incredible now that they’ve changed schemes and moved a lot of players to new positions.

Seems about right with the Niners
If Rogers plays well he may get an extension. This will allow Kirkpatrick to be the #2 or #3 depending on how well Culliver advances.

People here don’t think that Hightower is a better option than Upshaw? I have watched both pretty closely and found that Upshaw doesn’t really go 100% everytime it seems. I like his build a little more than Hightower’s, but don’t really see a first round pick.
Either way, Ozzie taking another Bama boy is not surprising. This class is loaded with ILB like last year’s class was with DE/OLB. Perfect for finding Ray’s replacement.

Colts
The reason the Colts don’t draft DTs in the first round is the guys who are there are usually of the same quality as the guys in the second. That’s Polian’s philosophy.
Thompson, to me, isn’t a great fit for the Indy DT rotation. The Colts need depth at 1-tech, not 3-tech. Fili Moala has developed well in his first two years and Drake Nevis looks extermely promising as a rookie. At 1-tech, Mookie Johnson is a good placeholder, but they could use an upgrade. Thompson is projected as a three tech and so doesn’t fit on the need/value axis the Colts use.
they feel the late 1st round DTs are of the same quality as 2nd round DTs
If they could get their hands on a top 15 caliber guy they would. That’s how I understand their take on DTs.
Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

Matt Kalil
Love that pick for the Bills. Totally agree w/ your write up. They need to address the LT spot first before getting a QB, especially if they’re not in play for Luck or Jones.
Nick Foles
a top 10 pick? Only time will tell on that. The top 3 Qb’s should be Luck, Jones, and Barkley as 1st rounder. The rest in the 2nd round, Jonathan Martin before Matt Kalil? Only time will tell on that. The Panthers are running a vertical pass offense, does Alshon J really fits in it? Only time will tell on that. Dre KirkPatrick is very raw from watching the games, but his upside with lead him to be a top 5 pick. The Cheifs drafting a rb in the 1st round? Their will be ton of rb’s they can get in the later rounds. Zach Brown is at best a 4-3 OLB, way to small to play in a 3-4( in which the Chargers play in).
Agree on Foles
Team Okpokowuruk
"Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun."
The Eagles have drafted a couple of DT’s out of the first round the past few years but I have a hard time seeing them doing it again. Even if Cullen Jenkins doesn’t work out, they are really high on Antonio Dixon. Admittedly, I’m not sure what else they would take. I would say linebacker but history suggests the Eagles will draft a linebacker in the first round when hell freezes over.
Let the beasting begin.

The last 40 time I heard for him was 4.5, which doesn’t seem great but he is very explosive. When he comes back from suspension, I hope he tears it up, raises his stock, and leaves all off field questions behind. He’ll be a steal if he goes in the second round

we'll see on that 40 time
we really don’t see their true 40’s till the combine, since school’s at this point enhance them. My money’s on it being in the 4.6’s

If we had to get a QB not named Luck
I’d like Jones. I expect a big year from him and I think he’s just as talented as Bradford.
However, I think they’ll give Tebow a shot before they abandon him. So with that in mind, I think Blackmon, and/or Kirkpatrick would be to my liking. I’m surprised you have them so far out of the top 10.

Draft order is AWESOME.
If Vlad doesn’t turn into a quality RT, I think he could easily slide inside and take over at RG when Moore is ready to move on.
Nice pick
I like that you went CB.

Ma I would hate to have that choice as the Chiefs.
Trent Richardson with Vontaze Burfict on the board? I don’t know about that one. I’d probably go with Burfict, though.

I don't blame ya
I don’t think you guys look to bad, I just think the NFC East will be too tough, the key to get out of the first pick will be out of division play, IMO. You guys look better then I thought though. The only way I see you being “good” is if Shanny can get the run game to perform like it did in Denver pre-2008. Even then though it may be tough
