NFL Stars of the Week - Week 1

Photo

Stars of the Week is back and ready to go for the season. This week was a not so fun week of football for me, as I had to watch Rutgers and the Steelers lose but there were a lot of impressive performances this week. After the jump, see the Stars of the Week and the Dud of the Week.

Star-divide

Offensive Stars

Star No. 1 - Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots - Brady put up 517 yards and 4 TDs. He was easily the biggest star and is probably the early favorite to win MVP.

Star No. 2 - Steve Smith, WR, Carolina Panthers -  Smith looked like himself on Sunday, finishing with 8 receptions for 178 yards and 2TDs. He barely edged out Wes Welker for this spot.

Star No. 3 - Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers - Newton had an incredible start to his career, throwing for 422 yards and 2 TDs as well as rushing for one. This was the hardest one to pick as it came down to Newton, Welker, and Ray Rice for this final spot.

Honorable Mentions: Drew Brees, Wes Welker, LeSean McCoy, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Cedric Benson, Ray Rice

Defensive Stars

Star No. 1 - Ed Reed, FS, Baltimore Ravens - Ed Reed started off the year with 2 INTs and was all over the place in the Ravens blowout of the Steelers.

Star No. 2 - Terrell Suggs, OLB, Baltimore Ravens - Suggs finished the game with 3 sacks for a total of 25 yards lost. He dominated the Steelers.

Star No. 3 - Joe Haden, CB, Cleveland Browns - Haden had 1 solo tackle, 2 assisted tackles, 1 sack, and five pass deflections. He was incredible despite his team struggling a lot.

Honorable Mentions: Lawrence Timmons, Ray Lewis, D'Qwell Jackson, Barrett Rudd, Chris Houston, Jason Pierre-Paul

Dud of the Week

Donovan McNabb, QB, Minnesota Vikings - McNabb was just 7-15 for 39 yards, 1TD and 1INT. Not the debut he wanted.

Now, here is how my scoring is going to work to determine my MVPs at the end of the year. A SOW (star of the week) will count as two points. An HM (honorable mention) will count as 1 point and a DOW (dud of the week) will count as -1 points. I will keep an excel file to keep track of this and will update you guys weekly.

Timmons does not deserve an honorable mention

He was terrible in coverage

I know but since I base all the other games off the stat sheets

I have to forget what I saw and just look at the stat sheets

that’s kind of hard to make legitimate cases for guys at positions that don’t show up on the stat sheet then. Ngata had a bigger impact than Ray, but that might not show up on the stat sheet. Or you may have a CB who completely locks up Andre or Calvin Johnson. Or a QB who throws for 400 yards because they are getting blown out and threw the entire game. Stats just aren’t always the way to go.

I know but that is the only way I can go because there is no way I can watch 16 games each week

And to even it out, I erase the games I watched from my memory so it is subjective.

And trust me, I notice if a great WR goes for nothing

by looking at the WRs stats and then seeing who was covering him. Look at Haden. His stats were not off the charts but he made the list because he locked down a good WR in Jerome Simpson and also deflected alot of passes

respectable

but not exactly “star” numbers, expecially considering he did it against a train wreck of a team

Raiders suck
Chargers are whiny douches
Chiefs are meh

Not really

2 sacks is nice but it was en route to a blowout against a Manningless Colts. Great game but “star?” Not in my book

1 of those sacks against Dallas Clark

Not the ideal matchup

Not his fault

How is he responsible for who he gets his sacks against?

Haralson

Not saying he deserves a spot

I just find that pretty damn impressive

Had a rugby game starting at 2 so missed all the 1's

and most of the 4’s, so I can’t agree or disagree on many, but from what I’ve seen of the Panthers game Newton/Smith are very deserving. Did catch the PAts game though and must say he belongs in his own god damn category, unbelievable performance

What did Chris Houston do to get in over Sean Lee

And yes, I’m only bringing up Lee b/c he’s from LBU

Good writeup.

But Haloti Ngata has to be mentioned if Reed, Suggs, and Lewis makes the list. He is the one who sets up everyone else with his pressure up the middle. He can’t be blocked by one guy. The picks by Reed and Lewis were set up by his pressure. Watch those replays on the NFL Network. They are what i call “The Fantastic 4”.

Daryl Washington, ILB Arizona Cardinals

6 Tackles (+2 assists), 1.5 sacks, *2 INT (one was taken away on a Richard Marshall “roughing the passer” call, which the NFL has since clarified as being a legal hit)

May not be a top performance, but it’s definitely a notice to the rest of the league that this 2nd year player is set-up for a break-out year in Ray Horton’s new defensive scheme.

No honorable mention for Chad Henne?

he threw for a carrer high 416 yards and 2 TDs while also leading the team with 59 rush yards and a TD his INT was meaningless being on the last play of the game and he kept the game competative till the end, loss or not that is the kind of play that at least deserved an honorable mention.
