2 Round NFL Mock Draft

Originally published on draftdatabse.wordpress.com

Well guys. Thanks to all of your help, I have enough information to write a 2 round NFL Mock Draft. Like always, where you see ??? that means I still need help with team needs. I can not go on to longer mock drafts until I know those needs. After the jump see the entire two round mock draft.

Star-divide

Round 1

1. Indianapolis (2-14) – Team Needs: QB, OG, OC, 2CB, WR, SS, TE, DE, LB, RBAndrew Luck, QB, Stanford – This is an absolute no brainer and no explanation is really needed.

2. St. Louis (2-14) – 2OT, 2WR, 2OLB, FS, CB, DT, OC, RB, FBMatt Kalil, OT, USC – This pick is basically a no brainer. The Rams will consider Justin Blackmon but a franchise LT is more important and more valuable than a franchise WR.

3. Minnesota (3-13) – LT, CB, WR, S, OG, 2LB, DT, FB, RB3 – Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State – If Kalil is taken by the Rams, this pick will also be a no brainer. Blackmon is a beast and would give Jake Locker a franchise WR.

4.Cleveland (4-12) – QB, WR, RT, DE, CB, OLB, RB, OG, FS, DT, KRobert Griffin III, QB, Baylor – Again, another no brainer. If Blackmon is off the board, the Browns will have to take the 2nd best QB in the draft and someone that fits perfectly in Pat Shurmur’s West Coast offense. He has great accuracy, is very mobile, and has great intelligence.

5. Tampa Bay (4-12) – 2CB, 2LB, RT, WR, OC, RB, LG, FB, DT, QB, K Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU – Another easy pick. The Bucs biggest need is finding a CB and Claiborne is the best CB in the draft class and could be better in coverage than Patrick Peterson was in coverage.

6. Washington (5-11) – QB, WR, LG, ILB, RT, CB, NT, TE, OC, SS, K, Rush LBDre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama – Ah and here is where it gets tricky. What do you do if you’re the Redskins and you can’t trade up to get Robert Griffin? Do you reach and take Tannehill? Do you select Alshon Jeffery to give your QB a franchise WR? Do you reach for David DeCastro or Luke Kuechly? So many options but I think the best one is to take a franchise, lockdown corner to build your defense around. No way is this the Redskins biggest need but he is the BPA and would help the Redskins compete in a pass happy division and converence.

7. Jacksonville (5-11) – QB, WR, 2CB, DE, FS, RT, P, OC, LB – Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina – Jeffery is a phenomenal talent but had an awful year due to bad QB play. However, he is still capable of being a #1 WR. He would give Blaine Gabbert a real #1 WR.

8. Miami (6-10) – QB, RT, Rush LB, NT, FS, RG, CB, TE, DE, ILB – Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford – Talking a RT at #8 overall might seem crazy but there is no QB worth the pick and any Rush LB would be a reach. Martin is the BPA and would give whoever their QB is a fantastic trio of OL.

9.Carolina (6-10) – DT, CB, LB, RT, 2S, RG, WR, KRiley Reiff, OT, Iowa – In this scenario, the Panthers are stuck in a situation where their top 3 needs to not match the BPA on the board. However, they can use this pick to upgrade their RT situation as Reiff is one of the top OTs in this class.

10. Buffalo (6-10) – 2 Rush LB, WR, LT, CB, QB, DE, TE, K, ILBCourtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama – The Bills need to spend multiple picks improving their pass rush and starting the draft off with Upshaw would be a great start. He has a good set of pass rushing moves and is very athletic.

11. Kansas City (7-9) – QB, RT, NT, CB, OG/OC, TE, RB, Rush LB, ILB Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska – If the Chiefs don’t pony up the money to resign Brandon Carr, they will need another starting CB. Dennard is a phenomenal man-coverage corner and has the potential to be a Pro-Bowler in this league.

12. Seattle (7-9) – QB, RDE, OG, DT, LDE, CB, RBQuinton Coples, DE, North Carolina – Coples is the best DE in this draft class and fills a big need for the Seahawks. There are no QBs worthy of the pick so addressing their next biggest need with the BPA is a great option.

13. Arizona (8-8) – RT, WR, RG, ILB, DE, Rush LB, CB, QB, NT, K, P – Mohammed Sanu, WR, Rutgers – The Cardinals would look long and hard at DeCastro here but Sanu would give them an awesome WR to pair with Fitzgerald. Remember how good the Cardinals were when they paired Fitzgerald with Boldin. If Kolb could step his game up, they could become an elite offense again.

14. Dallas (8-8) – CB, DE, OLB, OG, OC – David DeCastro, OG, Stanford – DeCastro is the top OG to come into the draft in the last few years and even though the Cowboys have bigger needs at CB and DE, there are no players on the board worthy of the pick.

15. Philadelphia (8-8) – LB, DT, CB, S, WR, TE – Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College – The Eagles need to address the LB spot at least once, if not twice in this draft. Starting off with Kuechly would give them a fantastic talent that knows how to make plays.

16. New York Jets (8-8) – OLB, RT, FS, SS, WR, DEWhitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois – The Jets need to address their pass rush with a good, pass-rushing, 3-4 OLB. Mercilus is a phenomenal athlete and combines that with a good set of pass rushing moves.

17. Cincinnati - from Oakland (8-8) – CB, RB, OG, ???Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama – The Bengals have some great young talent on the offensive side of the ball, but they need a franchise RB. Richardson has every feature that a franchise RB should have and will be a great player for the Bengals.

18. San Diego (8-8) – OLB/DE (pass rush), OG, ???Devon Still, DE/DT, Penn State – The Chargers need to spend at least one pick on a pass rusher and Still is a very good pass rusher at the 3-4 DE spot.

19. Chicago (8-8) – OG, OC, CB, ???Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina – Gilmore has a ton of talent and could be a great NFL player. He has to work on zone coverage a little bit and I almost made Chase Minnifield the pick here due to that fact but Gilmore has more upside than Chase.

20. Tennessee (9-7) – DE, OLB, ??? – Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina – Brown is the top 4-3 OLB in the draft and Tennessee is in desperate need. Brown is good in coverage and is an above average blitzer and should be able to start right away.

21. Cincinnati* (9-7) Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama – With their second pick in the first round the Bengals could look to add to their CB talent. Leon Hall is very good and Nate Clements is good but old. Jenkins should provide them with a new, young talent that could become a lockdown corner.

22. Cleveland - from Atlanta* (10-6) – Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame – Cleveland got their franchise QB earlier and now needs a franchise WR. Floyd will give them just that and will give the Browns a player that is incredibly versatile. Landing a franchise QB and WR is exactly how the Bengals started their rebuilding process and the Browns will hope to have the same success with that strategy.

23. Detroit* (10-6) - CB, LT, DE, OC, ??? – Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State – The Lions have four glaring needs and Jenkins is the BPA at those needs. He is a fantastic pass rusher and will play DE in the Lions 4-3 system.

24. Pittsburgh* (12-4) – OG, ILB, NT, S, K, CB, OT, QB, RB – Peter Konz, OG/OC, Wisconsin – The Steelers top 3 needs are all glaring but the position where the Steelers are hurting for talent the most it OG. Konz is the top center prospect and the #2 guard prospect in the draft and would likely start right away at LG

25. Denver* (8-8) – CB, RB, LG/RT, DT, WR – Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia – Denver has Champ Bailey but he is getting older and will retire soon. Minnifield is an awesome zone corner and an above average man corner. He can make plays on the ball and has great instincts.

26. New York Giants* (9-7) – ILB, OG, DT, WR, ???Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona State – Burfict might be the most talented LB in the draft but he has some character concerns to go along with that talent. However, Jerry Reese might decide to take the gamble on the uber-athlete and hope that the strong locker-room the Giants have can keep him focused.

27. Houston* (10-6) – CB, WR, NT, S, ???Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor – Wright is an awesome talent and pairing his speed and shiftiness with Andre Johnson might make this Houston offense the best in the AFC. Wright’s value is boosted due to his abilities as a kick and punt returner.

28. San Francisco* (13-3) – WR, CB, DE/OLB, DT, ???Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin – The 49ers need to give Alex Smith a franchise WR. Toon has great size and hands and above average speed and should be a good target for Smith or Kaepernick.

29. Baltimore* (12-4) – ILB, OC, LT, FS, OG, WR (big), CB – Donta Hightower, ILB, Alabama – The Ravens need to find a replacement for Ray Lewis and Hightower can be just that. He is not the greatest athlete but he plays tough, is great in the run game, and is a good pass rusher.

30. New England - from New Orleans* (13-3) – WR, CB, DT, OLB, ??? – Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC – The Patriots need to shore up their awful defense and adding a pass rush is the easiest way for them to fix their pass D. Perry is a phenomenal pass rusher and is great value at this point.

31. New England* (13-3) – Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson – Thompson is a good interior DL prospect and would fit in the 4-3 sets that the Patriots run. He can get some pressure from the interior and would help the rest of the front 7 by requiring a double team.

32. Green Bay* (15-1) – OLB, RB, CB, S, ??? – Mark Barron, S, Alabama – ThePackers defense went from top of the league to bottom of the league in just one season. They need to improve on all 3 levels of the defense and adding Barron, who can play either safety spot, is great value.

· Atlanta -> Cleveland: Julio Jones

· New Orleans -> New England: Mark Ingram

· Oakland -> Cincinnati: Carson Palmer
Round 2

  1. St. Louis (2-14) - OT, 2WR, 2OLB, FS, CB, DT, OC, RB, FB – Dwight Jones, WR, North Carolina – The Rams need to give Bradford a franchise WR and Jones can be just that.

  2. Indianapolis (2-14) - OG, OC, 2CB, WR, SS, TE, DE, LB, RBCordy Glenn, OG, Georgia – The Colts need to improve their interior OL to protect Luck/Manning.

  3. Minnesota (3-13) - LT, CB, S, OG, 2LB, DT, FB, RB3Kelechi Osemele, OG/OT, Iowa State – The Vikings won’t find a franchise LT here but they can improve the OG spot.

  4. Tampa Bay (4-12) - CB, 2LB, RT, WR, OC, RB, LG, FB, DT, QB, K Ronnell Lewis, LB, Oklahoma – The Bucs need two LBs and Lewis is the BPA. He is a good pass rusher and his most likely fit is at OLB.

  5. Cleveland (4-12) - WR, RT, DE, CB, OLB, RB, OG, FS, DT, KMike Adams, OT, Ohio State – The Browns have an awesome LT but they need an upgrade at RT. Adams is a great talent that could end up in the 1st round so this is great value.

  6. Jacksonville (5-11) - QB, 2CB, DE, FS, RT, P, OC, LBRyan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M – The Jags need to bring someone in to compete with Gabbert. Tannehill has all the tools but just needs to get more consistent.

  7. Washington (5-11) - QB, WR, LG, ILB, RT, NT, TE, OC, SS, K, Rush LBNick Foles, QB, Arizona – The Redskins can’t go into next year with the same QBs as last year and Foles is the best QB available. He has a good arm, makes good reads, and has good accuracy. He just needs to become more consistent.

  8. Carolina (6-10) - DT, CB, LB, 2S, RG, WR, KFletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State – The BPA also is the Panthers biggest need. Cox is a great 3 down DT that can do it all.

  9. Buffalo (6-10) - Rush LB, WR, LT, CB, QB, DE, TE, K, ILBMelvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina – The Bills could double dip on the rush LB in the first two rounds. Ingram is the BPA and would give the Bills a vaunted duo of rookie pass rushers.

  10. Miami (6-10) - QB, Rush LB, NT, FS, RG, CB, TE, DE, ILBVinny Curry, DE/OLB, Marshall – Curry is a great pass rusher and with no QBs worthy of this pick, the Dolphins can address their next biggest need.

  11. Seattle (7-9) - QB, OG, DT, LDE, CB, RBKevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin – Like the Dolphins, the Seahawks can address their 2nd biggest need with the BPA. Zeitler excels in the run game but is also a pretty good pass blocker.

  12. Kansas City (7-9) - QB, RT, NT, OG/OC, TE, RB, Rush LB, ILB Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis – Poe is the top NT in the draft and fills one of the Chiefs biggest needs.

  13. Dallas (8-8) - CB, DE, OLB, OC – Billy Winn, DE, Boise State – No CBs are worth this pick and Winn is one of the top players available. He fills a big need at DE and is a perfect fit for a 3-4 Defense.

  14. Philadelphia (8-8) - DT, CB, S, WR, TEJerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State – The Eagles have great DEs but need to improve at DT. Worthy is the BPA and could end up being a pro-bowler.

  15. New York Jets (8-8) - RT, FS, SS, WR, DEBacarri Rambo, S, Georgia – The Jets could use improvement at both safety spots and Rambo’s athleticism makes him a great ballhawk. He will need to improve in coverage but the talent is there.

  16. New England - from Oakland (8-8) – WR, CB, ??? – Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa – The Patriots need a WR to pair with Welker and Branch. McNutt is a big target that could be a very good #2 WR.

  17. San Diego (8-8) – Rush LB, OG, ??? – Chase Thomas, OLB, Stanford – The Chargers need to improve the pass rush and Thomas will do just that. He is a good fit for a 3-4 OLB and is good value.

  18. Chicago (8-8) – OG, OC, ??? – Ben Jones, OC, Georgia – The Bears must take an interior OL early in the draft and Jones is the best one left.

  19. Philadelphia - from Arizona (8-8) – CB, S, WR, TE Markelle Martin, S, Oklahoma State – The Eagles need an improvement at the open safety spot next to Nate Allen and Martin is the last good safety left in the draft.

  20. Tennessee (9-7) – DE, ??? – Andre Branch, DE, Clemson – The Titans need a player to try and replace Babin and Branch can be just that.

  21. Cincinnati* (9-7) – OG, ??? – Ryan Miller, OG, Colorado – The Bengals need an upgrade at RG and Miller is a fantastic pass blocker. He needs to improve as a run blocker but the talent and potential are there.

  22. Detroit* (10-6) - CB, LT, OC, ???Nate Potter, OT, Boise State – The Lions need a LT of the future and Potter can be that. He has all the tools to be a great player but needs to put it together.

  23. Atlanta* (10-6) – TE, ?????Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson – The Falcons need a replacement at TE and Allen is the BPA and the best TE in the draft. He is an awesome receiver and an above average blocker.

  24. Pittsburgh* (12-4) - ILB, NT, S, K, CB, OT, QB, RB – Alameda Ta’amu, NT, Washington – Ta’Amu is the 2nd best NT in the draft and with no ILBs worth the pick, the Steelers can fill their 2nd biggest need. They may give Lamar Miller a strong look here as you won’t be able to tell if Mendy can come back after his injury.

  25. Denver* (8-8) - RB, LG/RT, DT, WR – Lamar Miller, RB, Miami – The Broncos need a franchise back and Miller is exactly that. He is the BPA and has the tools to be great.

  26. New York Giants* (9-7) - OG, DT, WR, ???Derek Wolfe, DT, Cincinnati – Wolfe is an awesome athlete and the best pass rushing DT in the draft. Reese would love to land this kid here.

  27. Houston* (10-6) - CB, NT, S, ??? – Josh Chapman, NT, Alabama – Chapman is the best NT available in this draft for the Texans scheme and getting him here is good value.

  28. San Francisco* (13-3) - CB, DE/OLB, DT, ???Bruce Irvin, OLB/DE, West Virginia – Irvin is a great pass rusher and pairing him with Brooks and Smith would give the 49ers a great trio of pass rushers.

  29. Baltimore* (12-4) - OC, LT, FS, OG, WR (big), CB – Michael Brewster, OC, Ohio State – Birk is old and bad and the Ravens need a replacement. Brewster has tons of talent and could be that replacement.

  30. New Orleans* (13-3) – CB, DE, DT, ??? Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington – I am not aware of the Saints needs but I know their pass D struggled this year. Adding Trufant could help that weakness. Trufant excels in zone coverage.

  31. New England* (13-3) – CB, ???Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech – Hosely is a phenomenal talent and fills a need at corner. He excels in man coverage, which is exactly what the Patriots need.

  32. Green Bay* (15-1) - OLB, RB, CB – David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech – The Packers have average RBs in Starks and Grant but landing a talent like Wilson this late in the 2nd round might be tough to pass up. He can come out of the backfield as a receiver and seems like a perfect back for the Packers.

· Oakland -> New England: Joseph Barksdale and Taiwan Jones

· Arizona -> Philadelphia: Kevin Kolb

"Tennessee is in desperate need"

No. What we are gonna probably be in desperate need of is a SS or a FS but we’ll probably go DE. We have AYERS, McCarthy, and Witherspoon. Two of those guys are rookies and the other is still serviceable. We could go OLB, but it’s not out of desperation, it’s out of BPA.

No prob

Both SS Chris Hope and FS Michael Griffin are set to be free agents. Hope won’t come back. SS Jordan Babineaux (who is also a FA but should get a new deal) has replaced him quite well but Griffin is up in the air. Griffin was called out a couple times this year by the new DC and could very well be on his way out.

I like this one for Denver.

I’d like to think Miller or even David Wilson falls to us in the 2nd round.

A lot is two words. Allot can be one word but it has another meaning.
The only time you really want to use "myself" is when you are the recipient of your own action. Usually you're better off using "me."
Your is not the correct contraction of you are. The word you're looking for is you're.

Chargers

The team is pretty much set at DE with Liuget and either Castillo or Martin. The team would prefer to address the pass rush issue at OLB. Barnes is not a 3 down player. Phillips is injury prone and will be on the last year of his contract. LaBoy is a disappointment. English can’t be counted.

There’s also not much emphasis in the Chargers defense on the DE having pass rush skills. The defense basically designs plays such that the DEs main assignments are to free up the LBs on passing downs.

Chargers - probably O-line, eh?

Or once more into the linebacker pool?

Probably OLB in the first, and offensive line along the way

Chase Thomas isn’t a fit for the 3-4, though. Ideally we’d be able to grab someone like Upshaw, Perry, or Curry.

Bills

K and ILB are not needs.

Not crazy about the Upshaw pick, especially at 10. He’ll probably be a solid 3-4 OLB but from his college production I don’t see him being a force as a pass-rusher.

I do like the Ingram pick in the 2nd round though.

On another note, Brandon Jenkins is staying in school.

Da'Jon McKnight - WR, Nick Toon - WR, Marvin McNutt - WR, Dan Persa - QB, Russell Wilson - QB, Whitney Mercilus - DE, Melvin Ingram - DE/OLB, Jared Crick - 3/4 or 4/3 DE, Alshon Jeffery - WR, Michael Floyd - WR, Ryan Tannehill - QB

I also love the Ingram pick in the 2nd. Having both him and Curry available in the 2nd would be amazing. I’m ok with Upshaw, but not thrilled. I can’t see him really excelling at the NFL level, but he would be a solid upgrade. I could see Buffalo taking Mercilus over Upshaw since Nix has said he wasn’t someone Merriman’s size, which Mercilus fits exactly.

K is not a need for Buffalo, but ILB is. I don’t think either Morrison or Davis will be back next year and while I like Sheppard and Barnett, there needs to be more depths at that position.

by J_Mac on Jan 13, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

That should read “Nix has said he wanted someone Merriman’s size”. Not sure how I screwed that one up.

by J_Mac on Jan 13, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

I considered Mercilus there but decided to go with Upshaw because he is the safer pick

His bust potential is very low and he will likely at worse, be an average player. At best, he will be a good to great OLB that can average 9 to 12 sacks a year. For Mercilus, he is really a boom or bust player. At worst, he is a complete flameout that can’t make the transition to the NFL. At best, he is a top of the line pass rusher averaging 12 to 15 sacks a game. I think the risk/reward is much better with Upshaw and the BIlls can’t afford another 1st round bust

This is pretty much my take on Upshaw vs. Mercilus as well. I think Upshaw’s performance at the combine and other stuff like Dareus’ opinion on Upshaw will decide who they pick, but I can see the logic behind either one.

by J_Mac on Jan 13, 2012 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yep that is a good explanation

Upshaw will need a good combine to cement himself as a top 10 pick where for Merciulus, it will basically just affect whether he is a top 10 pick or top 20 pick. With a bad combine, Upshaw could fall out of the first round. A bad combine for Mercilus and they will just say he had a bad day

As a Bills fan

I find myself intrigued by going OLB rds 1 and 2. And Bruce Irvin in the second is an intriguing pick.

Just some ideas for Falcons needs in future mocks

TE is a definite need. There is no telling how long Tony G will be around.
OL is in bad shape. Baker is a bust, McClure is getting old, and there is no consistency at RG.
DE could be a great area of concern if John Abraham leaves in free agency.
LB is up in the air if Mike Peterson leaves. That would leave three solid starters and some unproven youngsters on the depth chart.
S is up there with Thomas DeCoud and James Sanders both being FAs. At least one should return but little depth regardless.

LT, RG, C

In that order. Neither Baker nor Svitek are franchise LTs. McClure is aging and Hawley struggled at center in replacement. Hawley was the best RG this season as Garrett Reynolds was awful. Mike Johnson has promise but was out all season with an injury. Tyson Clabo is holding down RT well and Justin Blalock is a good LG.

For the Redskins

CB is pretty far down the list as a need altho an upgrade would be good. In your draft I would think that Alshon Jeffery, Reilly Reiff or Johnathon Martin (RT is also a very real need) would all make more sense & be BAP over Kirkpatrick. Also, altho I am in the minority for Redskin fans, I am not a fan of Foles & I think he will drop into the mid rounds. Also you have seven out of the 1st 12 teams primary need as a QB including Jax & KC, not to sure if that is accurate

by ENsDad27 on Jan 13, 2012 3:51 PM EST reply actions

Which teams do you not agree on for QB needs?

Indy – Not really a need but they want to move on from Peyton
Cleveland – Colt McCoy is awful
Tampa – They need a backup because Josh Johnson is a FA and will likely try and go somewhere where he might be able to start
Washington – Rex and Beck are awful. Will likely look to Matt Flynn or Peyton Manning.
Jacksonville – Gabbert is awful and has no future in the NFL as of now.
Miami – Moore is ok but they need a QB of the future.
Buffalo – Fitzpatrick is ok but he will never lead them to the playoffs
Kansas City – Orton is average but a long term upgrade is needed

RG3 is gonna be a Brown unless a team gives up the farm for the pick.
Bucs: Plenty of veterans out there. No, he won’t start anywhere.

Jax: If Gene Smith was fired, yeah. Since he is still there, He “saves face” and tries to make Gabbert “work out.”

Buffalo: False

There are a lot of Bills fans who feel that Fitzpatrick can get the team to the playoffs, but never further than that. Sort of a Chad Pennington ceiling on playoff performance.
With the way Buffalo keeps accruing top 10 picks, a lot of us would really like to see Buffalo pick up a QB if a good one falls to them.

And

Gabbert is a rookie and was put in a horrible situaction. Coming into the draft, he was seen as a very raw quarterback was a lot of potential. This year will be key for him.

I am in the minority for Redskin fans

Most of us Skins fans are hoping that they trade up for either Luck or RG3, with a trade up to #2 or #3 for RG3 the most likely. If these options cannot be consumated, then a fall back option such as Tannehill or Foles will probably be the direction the FO takes.

BTW, Jake Locker does NOT play for Minnesota, as your #3 pick states. That happens to be Christian Ponder; Locker is in Tennessee, but I am sure you already knew that.

If the vikes don't get Kalil

I see them trading back and the skins might make a decent trade partner for them to get reiff or martin. If they don’t I could see someone doing it. The only way I see the browns getting him in this scenario is if they trade up to number 3 with both their firsts this year, which seems rediculous, but it would prevent another team moving up and taking him from them.

While the Vikings need WR help I don’t think Blackmon is worth a third pick, besides there are a few good ones in FA this year and I hope they realize this.

You forgot Seattle.

I didn’t really see anything of them this year but are McCoy and Gabbert really so awful or just rookies without O-lines or weapons? If Cleveland gets RG3, does McCoy have any trade value? Is it worth it to stick with Gabbert and wait for the Barkley sweepstakes?

Brewster, Hosley, or Wilson goes to the Giants right there. Taze….eh I guess. I think I’d prefer Dwight Jones or even Dwayne Allen there, maybe Glenn or Adams.

I though a lot about putting Brewster there in the 2nd round

but Wolfe was awesome value. He is the best pass rushing DT in the draft and has the potential to be a top 5 pass rushing DT in the league. Adding him into the mix with JPP, Osi, Tuck, and Austin would make that DL so, so scary. I appreciate the input though. I don’t know if they would take Allen in round 1. We have plenty of DTs

Canty is on a long term deal. 6-7 320. Joseph was a 1st year starter. 6-4 330, 39 bench press reps at the combine. Bernard had his best year as a Giant. All three received positive grades from PFF. Next year Austin returns.

The other thing that you may not realize is that with all of our DE talent, one or two of them (usually Tuck) moves inside on passing downs.

Replace DT with CB on the need chart. Aaron Ross and Terrell Thomas are UFAs.

Yeaaah the DL would be very fearsome, but it almost becomes a problem of not being able to get each guy enough time.

Taze’s potential is huge, but the Giants don’t need the headache of holding his hand and keeping him in line, though I’m sure they could do it. Giving them a guy like Allen gives them a HUGE threat and gives Eli a real security blanket to throw to. Try covering Nicks, Cruuuuuuuuz, Ham (pending FA happenings), Barden (he has the potential, just has to be given the opportunity), AND Allen would be a nightmare and a half for defenses, plus if we kept Ballard as our 2nd TE we’d have a even bigger arsenal.

taze has the pottential to be the steal of the draft.
he woulda been top 10 if it werent for his senior (dare i say) season.

Because Canty is not very good and is not a pass rushing threat

Likewise with Joseph, he is a run stopper, not a pass rusher. The Giants need to add a pass rushing DT in this draft and Wolfe happens to be the best one in the draft. I figured it would be good value and fill a minor need, especially when your other needs did not have anywhere close to the BPA

Wolfe is a good pick, but 2nd round DTs in 3 straight years just doesn’t make sense. Wolfe doesn’t have a first round grade…I really can’t see any way he will or can in the future. He’s not THAT good. However Austin and Joseph did, and that’s why they drafted them.

Last time you told me Burfict is a great fit for the Giants

Wolfe is very good and finished the year with 21.5 TFLs and 9.5 sacks. Unlke Austin and Joseph, whose strengths are in the run game (and Austin had a high grade but might never pan out as a pro. He has a lot of ? coming into the draft and could just as well be a bust as a star), Wolfe’s strengths are in the pass rushing game and he is an elite pass rusher.

I never said Burfict is a fit for the Giants. And who the hell cares if Austin “might never pan out”. They spent a 2nd round pick on dude and he hasn’t played a down yet. They were and still are high on him, and he has elite pass rushing potential too as a DT.

Giants go BPA sure, but they do know when to calm down with drafting the same position over and over and over again.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Jan 13, 2012 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

What makes you say Austin has elite potential as a pass rusher

Freshman: 6TFL, 3 Sacks
Sophomore: 1.5 TFL, 1 Sack
Junior: 6TFL, 4 Sacks

How is that representitive of an elite pass rusher? His strengths in college were in the run game and that is where his strengths will be in the NFL. However, here is what Wolfe brings

Sophomore year: 8TFL, 5 Sacks
Junior Year: 11TFL, 4.5 Sacks
Senior Year: 21.5 TFL, 9.5 Sacks

So how can you say with out laughing at yourself that Austin’s potential as a pass rusher is better than Wolfes? Is it because he is on your team and you hope he turns into a good player? It must be because by every measure of reason and thought, Wolfe will be the better pass rusher in the NFL

mostly cuz of his athleticism and potential.

and also how college production, especially for a DT, doesn’t exactly hold up in the pros.

Also since I don’t care about Derrick Wolfe. Good for him if he’s the better pass rusher in the pros. The Giants have plenty of guys to collapse the pocket and rush the passer.

Like the Broncos picks

Our need on the OL though is a LT (pass protector) to play at RT. Tebow is left-handed so he needs a blindside protector in order to free up the TE on that side for routes. Can be a project because we’ve signed Ryan Harris for 2012. We’re all set with OG’s.

by yibberat on Jan 13, 2012 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Franklin isn't a pass protector. He's a run masher

Tebow is going to need blindside protection if he is ever going to be expected to 3/5 step drop. Shotgun all the time won’t work long term.

by yibberat on Jan 13, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

You must be basing that off of the begining of the year.

Frankln improved a lot over the year and in that winning streak Tebow had all day to throw the ball and Frankln was apart of that. Not just the winning streak either, Tebow still had all day to throw against the steelers. I’ve not heard anyone complain about his pass protecting skills since the Miami game. I have no idea why EFX would want to replace him.

by tiderfootball09 on Jan 13, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying he's going to be replaced.

Broncos signed Ryan Harris for a reason. Because he’s a great pass protector. But he’s injury prone so he’s not a long-term starter solution unfortunately.

Franklin doesn’t have the lateral mobility to ever project as a blindside protector. Lateral mobility is not coachable. It just is. He did fine this year – with the Broncos running shotgun formation most of the time and with the TE on that side completely out of the receiving game. But that is going to have to change if Tebow is ever going to be able to open up his passing game. He can’t possibly pass successfully with one fewer receiving option than every other QB in the league. And with his blindside protected by two players rather than the one on every other team.

Clady is a FA in 2013 and it is entirely possible he will get big FA offers from a traditional (read right-handed QB) team at LT that we won’t likely match if we go with Tebow. He won’t be moving over to RT. That Clady contract will IMO be the longterm go/nogo re Tebow.

There will be plenty of places on the OL to play Franklin – at LG rotating with Beadles to upgrade run block on that side. To replace Kuper at RG for the first part of the season (no way Kuper will be able to start the season with that injury). To rotate in with either LT/RT on running plays. And in 2013, to replace Clady at LT if Clady leaves. And longer-term, to replace Kuper at RG when his contract ends and Kuper retires.

by yibberat on Jan 13, 2012 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

They brought in Harris for o-line depth...

Did you notice they signed Harris after Kuper went down? That’s why they brought in Harris. He’s more of an emergency situation. Frankln was drafted to replace Harris. Why do you think they let Harris walk in the offseason? Also they gave Frankln Harris’ number. Also You said it yourself, Frankln had a fine year. Guess what? He was a rooke. Not many second round OTs have that kind of impact. It would be foolish to give up on him at tackle after making the all-rookie team and being apart of the o-line that set the team rushing record—which is pretty good. In addition, Fox stated before that one of his top o-linemen in Carolina had the same injury as Kuper and was ready to go by the start of the season. I’m not worried about that.

Like I said in my other post down below, I don’t know where your getting this idea that Frankln is moving to guard. The guy made all-rookie team as an OT. Ever since the Miami game, he’s been good with his pass protection. In case you didn’t see last game, he did good against Lamar Woodly. Woodly is easily a top 5 pass rusher in the league. If he can handle Woodly, then I’m sure he can handle anyone.

I'm on an island with this one ...

but I don’t think safety is a big need. I think Mays is the guy they want there and I still think he has the ability to live up to his second round pick status.

A run stuffing DT would nice if they don’t resign Pat Sims, but I think DE might be a bigger need. Michael Johnson appears to be just a situational player. Frostee Rucker is a Free Agent, Geathers will be a free agent next year and is completely ineffective as a pass rusher, and Dunlap hasn’t proved that he can stay healthy.

I think my order of needs right now would go like this:
OG, CB, RB, WR, DE, DT. If they don’t resign Manny Lawson I’d also say that linebacker is a need.

by Animal_Like_Football on Jan 16, 2012 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't have a problem with this draft.

My favorite pick is Miller because the broncos need a homerun threat at RB badly. Chase Minnifield is not too bad of a pick. However it will be interesting to see what the broncos do in free agency/trade wise. It seemed like last year they went BPA in the draft and got their needs through free agency/trade.

by tiderfootball09 on Jan 13, 2012 4:51 PM EST reply actions

We agree.

For the most part…I think Von Miller was the perfect storm of BPA and need; but after the first round…still hard to tell about BPA versus need. Rahim? Maybe BPA…maybe need.

Regarding your comments on FA, I’d love it if we stole Carr from the Chefs and moved Goodman down to nickle or dime.

But as I’ve said elsewhere, I’d die happy if the Broncos made it Miller Time in back-to-back drafts. Lamar Miller is exactly what we need to take this offense to another level.

Truth shall be known.

by Agent Jerry Fletcher on Jan 13, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

At the time Moore was a BPA

Each pick when I look back on it, each “expert” says that most of them were good value picks. I personally would like to get Jermichael Finnely from the Packers. He would add a ton to this offense.

by tiderfootball09 on Jan 13, 2012 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

Value picks? Really?

Most of the stuff I’ve read has our 2011 draft picks as slight reaches. Nothing too extreme but in every case the Broncos filled a position of near/immediate need rather than a BPA who would fill a bench slot for a year. At least in my opinion.

We doubled up on TE and S because we needed immediate starters. The only reason the TE’s haven’t started is because we pulled in two FA’s as well. Likewise with Franklin to replace Beadles in Harris slot last year. Nate Irving was nowhere near the top-ranked ILB last year – Martez Wilson or Kelvin Sheppard or Quan Sturdivant or Akeem Dent or Colin McCarthy were all higher. We took Nate before any of those others were off the board.

by yibberat on Jan 13, 2012 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

Also both TEs were Clancy Barone (of Antonio Gates fame) projects...

Essentially hoops players that he thought might make TEs (and maybe still might.) Too bad about Irving, was elite before his accident. Maybe he never recovers. I’m of the opinion that after round 3, the whole draft is a crapshoot. Some guys you hit on, like the LBs you listed above, some guys you don’t. I don’t really recall, anybody howling reach on Rahim, he was a late first-early 2nd guy. Franklin, maybe but as tider said, he made the all-rookie team so there’s that. Carter was the top rated (by many) strong safety in the draft last year. Why everybody lumps SSs and FSs together always kills me. It really is a totally different head.

I see a lot of “good value” comments. Also Bill Parecells said Irving was the top MLB on his big board—on his draft show. From my stand point it was a good draft. The broncos had three rookies make the all-rookie team. Carter had a nice year for a fourth round pick. Not many teams can get that much out of a fourth rounder right away. Virgil Green made an impact in the run game. Like Mike Mayock says, if you can get three guys that can contribute right away from the draft, that’s a homerun. If Moore, Irving, and Thomas have a nice offseason, the draft will be a grand slam. Hard to get much better than that.

Lastly I don’t know where you’re getting this idea that Frankln will replace Beadles. I have not seen anything that would suggest that. I know Beadles is the weakest link on the o-line, but compared to other o-lines, this o-line for the broncos was pretty good. I don’t see EFX changing up one of the top o-lines—not to mention youngest— in the NFL after they just set the team record in rushing yards. Not a lot of teams can run the football like that. Also Tebow got plenty of time to throw the ball. It’s amazing how much time he has to throw the ball.

Lions

I like the picks. There were a number of players you could’ve mocked to the Lions and I would still like it. Konz, Minnifield, Hightower, Ingram

Happier than a pig in shit that I was wrong about Matthew Stafford since 2009!
Go Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons!

It kills me when someone mocks Konz the pick after the Lions in the first round.

If Konz is there, I really hope Mayhew pulls the trigger on him.

Also, the second round order is messed; Lions pick 23rd, Atlanta picks 22nd.

One of the things I see the Lions continuing to do

is take the best player at a given position in the draft.

2009: Stafford: QB, Pettigrew: TE
2010: Suh DT, Best RB
2011: Fairley: DT, LeShoure: RB

I think they believe these guys will be the best for their role on the team out of the entire draft class. The management seems to take pride in saying, “We drafted the best ____ in the draft.”

In this situation I think Konz would be a very likely pick because most have him as the #1 C in the draft, and other O-Line positions will already have picks off the board.

by Adam Keith on Jan 17, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

I don't like the Lions picks

I don’t see us needed a DE at all. If Avril leaves, we still have two guys sitting on the bench who are good enough to start. Sure, we can use some new blood to take over the DE bench position, but that is what the 7th round is for.

In this mock, the BPA for the Lions is Konz. By far.

You don't really understand the needs of the Seahawks

We’re set all along the OL, at CB and have pretty good starters at both DE spots (LEO and 5-tech). Red Bryant and Marshawn Lynch are both FAs, but we’re not going to let them walk.

Our biggest needs are at QB and LEO-of-the-future/situational pass-rusher.

Coples kind of fits as a possible value pick, but we’d have to make a bunch of changes in his play and our scheme to get him snaps. He may not be worth it, given his pedestrian 2011 performance.

Zeitler doesn’t fit a need and would have to replace either a 2011 draft pick or 2011 FA to get snaps. OG isn’t a bad depth pick for the mid-to-late rounds, but it doesn’t make any sense in the second.

Alright

thanks for all this info. The Seahawks are a tough team to get a read on because all of you fans tell me they have like two needs but clearly, after another pedestrian season, they have much more needs than you guys are telling me. I am going to have to analyze them and look at their season because I am not getting much help from the fans. If they were this bad again after an average year last year, they clearly have some big needs. They don’t just need a QB and a future pass rusher.

We had a top 10 defense and a bottom 8 offense

Aside from the loss to the Steelers, all of our losses were relatively close. We didn’t win any more games this year but by all statistical measures we were much improved.

You mention we need CBs, but Brandon Browner is a Pro Bowl alternate and was outplayed by rookie Richard Sherman. You say we need a RB and an OG but our run game was one of the most productive in the 2nd half of the year. You mention we need new DEs, but Clemons put up 11 sacks this year and Red Bryant is doing exactly what he’s being asked to do. You can’t expect to replace these players with rookies and get improved play.

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Jan 13, 2012 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair, some of us did mention DE as a need (albeit in pass-rush form)

I think I may have mentioned Coples prior, although I can’t remember if that was for seton hall’s mock or not. Pass rush is still a need, although I’ve warmed up to the pick being an interior lineman who can rush. Brockers (if he declares) or Still would be good. If it’s a DE, not the end of the world – Brock stank, and Clemons won’t be there forever. I don’t know enough to definitively say who fits our scheme best though.

Past QB (which I am seriously thinking is a hole that won’t be filled in the first two rounds this year… thanks Barkley!) and DT/DE, I think LB depth would be good. I thought we had some issues with TE coverage, and our LB corps doesn’t seem to have a great deal of speed.

Trying to look at it from an outside standpoint, I can see why our team looks like it needs more than Seahawks fans say they do. I personally don’t see where a rookie in this year’s draft would dramatically upgrade us other than the areas we mentioned.

Work hard, play harder, rest easy.

by jwolf0 on Jan 13, 2012 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Coples might be a fit if

(a) we change the scheme and use him to replace Red on base downs
(b) we use him at the 3-tech, despite his lack of size, to get more pass rush on base downs, or
© we use him as a DT on passing downs.

I think we’re flexible enough with our DL to find a place for him, but he’s not necessarily a clear upgrade as a starter.

Seahawks stuff to keep in mind:

The roster has been completely overhauled since 2009 and a lot of guys that played in 2010 are gone too.

We were the second youngest team in football this season.

We had an awful first half of the season and a pretty good second half of the season.

Outside of adding pass rush, or a potential franchise QB there aren’t a lot of places on the roster that can be immediately upgraded from guys in the draft.

As a fellow Cowboys fan, I would not be that pleased.

I think defense should be our top priority and getting just Billy Winn in the first two rounds wouldn’t cut it for me.

I would be much happier going with Janoris Jenkins and Bruce Irvin. Or Janoris Jenkins and Andre Branch. Or an OLB (Ingram, Perry, or Mercilus) and Ben Jones.

Taking DeCastro and Winn would probably make me break my TV>

DeCastro is one of the best G prospect to come out in years and he fits a need for us. To pass on him for a corner with character issues or a lesser prospect just to “fix the defense” would ultimately not be good move for us. To me, DeCastro is the perfect combination of value and need.

Well we will see. FA will probably dictate which direction we go.

The defense though is begging for help and I am not sure how much longer we can neglect it. By the time we get around to it at this rate, D-Ware will be in his 30s and likely declining.

Also, I don’t think its written in stone that the guys I listed are lesser prospects than DeCastro. He may be a great guard, but good guards are much more obtainable than great pass rushers or even great corners. If any of those guys kill the combine like I think they might, I don’t think you can pass on the chance to actually upgrade the defense.

Here is a thought:

Instead of clogging up MTD with your poorly researched Mock Drafts, why don’t you go and find out team needs on your own? It kind of irks me that you’re putting this on us, like it’s our problem that you can’t find team needs.

Also, you’re a writer here, right? Why is this formatted so poorly? Surely there is a way you can make this look nicer.

Also, Bacarri Rambo, Chase Thomas and Desmond Trufant did not enter the draft. I’m actually kind of scared to read some of the descriptions.

And finally, this would be a very good Eagles draft. Kuechly, Worthy and Martin? That’s a nice haul.

Yeah I really don't see them letting Carr go.

I have an easier time seeing Bowe gone than Carr, but ultimately I think they are both back at least for next season.

And yeah I’d go for DeCastro in this scenario too. I’d be ok with Poe in the second (even though they have yet to really give Jerrell Powe a shot), but I’d also like Dwayne Allen there.

Colts

Wow, that is an atrocious set-up for the Colts in the second. Dennard, Minnifield, Thompson and Barron are all off the board. Glenn is alright, but I’d need to see more tape on how he is as a pass blocker. Second might be a bit high for a right guard, but I don’t really see anyone else on the need/value axis the Colts draft on other than one of the top guards. The only other option I see would be McNutt.

Any pick would do for the Vikings really. However as good as Blackmon is, he will not be able to do much with the current line. If the Vikings cannot trade down they should just go ahead and make sure they get a left tackle and take Jonathan Martin.

Homer homer homer homer

Your offensive line is garbage. You had the 28th most adjust line yardage. You had the 27th worst power success rate. The only spot you averaged more than 4 yards per carry was around the left side (and only 4.03 at that). Your whole line is terrible at run blocking. You’ve got the worst LG in the NFL with Diehl. And ProFootballFocus gave your offensive line the worst grade in the NFL as Eli Manning was under pressure more than any QB in the NFL by a whopping 36 drop-backs, that is 36 more pressures allowed than second worst.

And you severely overestimate your defensive tackles, your team allowed 4.3 yards per carry against carries up the middle, 26th worst in the NFL.

You absolutely do not need a WR, you’re correct about that. Especially if Manningham comes back. But I should remind you that Barden is awful, he has limited quickness and he isn’t physical enough to outmuscle corners. And Jernigan showed absolutely nothing that would lead anyone to believe he is going to amount to anything, all he did that was notable was fumble a bunch of kickoffs in the pre-season.

You should look into rewording those needs because you make it seem like those guys are going to be easy to find. I mean all I need is a million bucks and a stud 3 down linebacker.

And you’re not winning a superbowl. All you’re doing is making your draft spot worse, congrats!

And the Eagles have beaten you 7 of the past 8 times so you might want to cool it.

I'm glad to hear back from you DJaxfan10

But you and your handy PFF quotes and impressive, encyclopedic knowledge of that site, while admirable have failed you once again. The first time is when you thought your team would do anything but be home for the holidays!I give the Iggies credit..they have our number for sure. But we are peaking in the playoffs.

The OLine is the weakness, which I have pointed out but the only team that truly made us pay is WASH. and their home too…no one left in the playoffs really has that great of a pass rush. And teams have to do in the playoffs is rise to the occasion in the clutch..our OL is jelling. We are jelling in the interior..and OT is holding up for now..but yeah we need Beatty back and KMac is almost done, but he’s squeezing a little more out of himself for this title run!

The DL is jelling as well and has been playing up to potential, the stats you site are taking into account early season games before we picked it up..we’ve been stopping the run with the front 4 and getting to the QB on the way to the run regularly.DT play has been a big part of that!
As for WR don’t get me wrong I’ll take one…it’s a passing league,so why not?!But our track record at WR suggests we could get something good out of Barden and JJ..not to mention SS12 the traitor should be fully recovered, possibly back in the fold and has great chemistry with 4th quarter,Playoff Stud,Eli Manning!

What is going to be so hard to find?A replacement for Mario…we have a UFA in Cruuuuuzzz in the top 5 in rec. yardage…Jerry Reese can get it done!

I would prefer a 6’ 5"stud TE who is a serious threat in the pass game and capable in both phases of blocking, ala Gronk or Graham.

You have beaten us 7 of 8 times and I tell you the truth,I’m not happy about that.
But we have 3 Super Bowls(in my lifetime)and 4 old league championships which makes 7…going on 8 and you can’t be happy about that,my Dream Team loving nemesis!

Going a little far with your Giants bashing

But you make some points. I won’t defend the O-Line, it’s been bad. But also we have solutions to that problem in house, and the draft shouldn’t be a huge part of our O-Line’s success.

I will defend our DT’s though. This is Joesph’s first year starting, there are some bumps to be expected. But the man is formidable and quick for his size, and once he adjusted to the defense and play of pro ball, he became a good player. Canty has been playing well this year, getting pressure up the middle and clogging up gaps on many occasions, makes a fair amount of plays in the backfield. Austin has potential, but that doesn’t mean jack in the NFL, so I won’t say too much about him. Bernard is a good back up, and the Giants DE’s take turns rotating into the DT spots on passing downs. Overall our DT’s are a fairly set situation.

The Niners draft
28. San Francisco* (13-3) – WR, CB, DE/OLB, DT, ??? – Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin – The 49ers need to give Alex Smith a franchise WR. Toon has great size and hands and above average speed and should be a good target for Smith or Kaepernick.

None of those are team needs. Many of them are fan WANTS, but not team needs. It’s not your fault, you’ve just been listening to the wrong people.

WR – Most of the younger generation wants T.O. back under a different name. We have more tight ends on the field than wide receivers on 90% of our downs. Want to add another receiving threat? If you want him to see the field you’d better get a tight end instead.

CB – Adding another young guy for the future isn’t a horrible idea — but Rogers is solid and we’ll be paying him, Brown is above average and is hated mostly for his failures of years past, and Culliver was good enough to leave in single coverage on Megatron for about 20 snaps and did a great job. Not a need.

OLB – see below.

DT – Yes we have a couple guys on the DL at 30 or above. But both are still playing almost every down, and doing so at a high level. Even better for us, our depth could start on most teams. Everyone we play damn sure wishes it was a need and Justin Smith was close to retirement, but he isn’t and it’s not.

If we want to replace an aging player close to retirement, Frank Gore is much much closer to that mark than Justin Smith.

San Francisco* (13-3) – CB, DE/OLB, DT, ??? – Bruce Irvin, OLB/DE, West Virginia – Irvin is a great pass rusher and pairing him with Brooks and Smith would give the 49ers a great trio of pass rushers.

Bruce Irvin wouldn’t play a down. This year Aldon had the opportunity to play on nickel downs but next year he’ll be a three down player. He’ll still be playing our nickel packages which doesn’t leave room for Irvin to “make his bones” as a situational rusher.

And nobody wants to address the hands down worst unit on our team — the offensive line. On the left side we have Joe Staley and Mike Iupati, who are average to excellent at everything they do. Everything to the right of Iupati is a huge liability.

Goodwin and Snyder can’t move anyone off the ball to save their lives and Anthony Davis, while a mauler in the run game is one of the worst pass protectors in the league because he’s a guard playing out of position.

Well the depth at OLB isn't very good.

We have three OLBs this year. Brooks is a FA. If Brooks leaves we will have 2 so in that case someone will have to come and replace him. Not to mention Haralson isn’t that great

And when we win, we want to dominate. We want to take guys out. We want to hurt guys. We want to win. We just want to dominate, hit them in the mouth. - Rathman

Houston

Needs OL depth, and LB depth to end your ????

Mainly OG’s, and ILB’s/ or convertibles, Safety I wouldn’t call one of the spots that needs upgrade, we have 4 safeties we rotate in. I would be more inclined to say CB is more important to upgrade then S.

But most definitely OG and LB depth would be more important before any more DB’s

I do like the two picks you handed us, I would love to see both of those happen

Jets

Mercilus — no thanks. Not athletic enough to play OLB, and he’s not a good prospect, imo. Dude isn’t going to beat NFL tackles with that bull rush.

And I’d be livid if we passed on Richardson, Burfict, Floyd and Perry to draft that bust. You can even throw Jenkins in with that group.

Drafting RBs is their thing

You forgot Bilal Powell and the fullback Conner as well. The Jets even traded up to get Conner. Same with Greene.

Greene isn't a primary guy, Tomlinson stinks and should retire, and Richardson is a generational talent.

You don’t pass on one of the best prospects you’ll see in years, at a position you rely heavily on, to grab some pass rusher thats better suited to play in a different scheme.

Jets need OL very badly...

their past success running the rock was b/c of OL dominance, not RB.
And you should have never fired Bill Callahan…that was so stupid.
I hope they can get it going as I enjoy it as long as their fans don’t hate on my team.
And having a 3-4 and not drafting OLB…or even ILB is perplexing to say the least!

Panthers.

Can’t really complain too much, but now that the LSU DT has declared I think he is a worthy pick at 9, even if he could be a bit of a project.

If that was the way they went, I can’t see them double dipping and would say someone like Baccari Rambo in the 2nd. I mean his name is Rambo.

by tarheels24 on Jan 14, 2012 3:15 PM EST reply actions

I REALLY dont like this draft for tha Panthers

I don’t see us taking a DT in the 2nd atter taking 2 in the 3rd last year. We will either take one in the first or not at all IMO. The Reiff pick is even worse. Our O-Line is the strength of out team. The FO is very confident that Otah will come back and even if he doesnt Bell played decently as a rookie last year. but we dont really have a lot of good options at this draft spot, if we couldnt trade back i would probably take Brockers (i know you didnt have him coming out when this was made), Brown (a little high but fills a bigger need and has the talent to justify it), Floyd (I think this is way to high for a WR and it isnt a big need but i still think it’s better than a RT), Wright (A lot of people are really high on him and i suspect he will be flying up the boards soon). in the 2nd i would like to go after a DB. with who you have available i would go with Martin

Matt Kalil - Franchise LT

After I saw the second pick, I’ve got to ask, why do so many people think a franchise left tackle is a necessity. Looking at the past 5 years of super bowl champions, it shows left tackle does not need to be a star position. Even looking at the top 10 OL picks in the past 5 drafts, those picks weren’t strong on success and those teams have not done well since using a pick on them. I think the WR position has been much more important on successful teams.

Not nearly as high on Upshaw as many, but Upshaw-Ingram would finally give this team good OLB.

Personally I’d prefer DeCastro, Floyd, or Mercelius with that pick

by seton hall and steelers on Jan 14, 2012 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Where would DeCastro play?

Really good guard, excellent player, but the Bills aren’t gonna draft a OLineman in the first round, and if they are it would be a Left Tackle. I don’t really get the preference of Mercelius over Upshaw I have seen in these comments. I think Upshaw’s upside is greater, heck I would probably take Perry over Mercelius, but I’m in no way a professional, so I could be wrong. I like Floyd, and wouldn’t be mad about the pick, but still consider pass rusher a greater need.

by Mr. h on Jan 14, 2012 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

I think Mercelius has much more potential than Upshaw, but Upshaw is more of the sure thing to transition into the NFL.

An interior 3 of DeCastro-Wood-Levitre would open up monster holes and in his past 2 drafts Nix has shown he likes value more than filling needs

Chiefs need to resign Carr

I rather pick up a need then create a need due to bad GMing. I like the 2nd pick for the chiefs poe 1st string and powe as 2nd string DT would be good.

Jaguars

Let me preface by saying I cannot take this draft seriously after seeing a QB as the second rounder for the Jaguars. Any half-intelligent football fan would realize that the Jaguars are not going QB unless Luck falls to #7.

As for Jeffery, the way the draft falls he is a solid option although there might be better picks out there like a Martin or Rieff

Browns

Okay, I’ll go on the premace that we actually draft RGIII with the 4th pick. I would rather take kendall Wright to go with him instead of Floyd, and then I’s use the 2nd round pick on Ingram at DE. The O line is going to get some addressing in this years FA market, as is the LB, CB, WR, & RB. Don’t forget that Clevelands got a huge pot of cash under the cap, and now teams have o spend at least 90% this next season.

Preferably, trade that #4 spot out for as much as you can get some team to give up, in players and picks (over a multi-year period – like 3 years).

Chargers

I would put the needs at OLB, OT, SS, C. They managed to get two solid OGs in the 09 draft. WR could be looked at early if the team doesnt franchise VJ. Still would be a good pick for the Chargers. It’s not really a need and they took 34 DE in the first last year; but that pick isnt bad. I was going to say something about Brandon Jenkins and the Chargers, but I think he’s going back to school. Chase Tomas would be a perfect 2nd round pick

Nice 1st round pick, the 2nd is probably the absolute worst pick I have ever seen in a mock draft. You waste a 2nd round pick on competition? thats just awful.. awful. If you don’t want to at least attempt to make a decent pick why not just skip the team on your next mock.

Texans needs - WR, NT, OG, KR/PR, S, ILB,

As far as the 1st round pick goes, I say no way to Kendall Wright. He doesn’t fit what the Texans do, plus with Andre on the wrong side of 30, there’s no way I see Wright ever stepping up to the #1 spot in the Texans offense once Andre is gone or if he gets hurt again, not to mention I wouldn’t use a 1st round pick on a guy because of his return skills. Dwight Jones or Nick Toon would be better fits for the Texans offense. Dwight Jones is the ideal pick cause he already knows the offense since they run it at UNC. In the 2nd round though, if Chapman is there, hell yeah I’d take him.

As far as the CB situation is concerned, the Texans will either address it in FA or not at all

They’re logjammed at CB. Brandon Harris was taken in the 2nd round in the last draft & hasn’t seen the field in meaningful time this year (mostly because most believe they don’t want to repeat the mistake they made with Kareem Jackson). They also took Roc Carmichael in the 4th & he spent the year on IR. I hope they cut Kareem Jackson & resign Jason Allen if he’ll take a discount, but the Texans have a lot of personnel they need to evaluate at CB already

The only way we draft a safety in the first is if Nick Collins is done. Until I hear the doctors saying he can’t play any more, I will expect him to be back. And if that were the case, I doubt we’d go for one in the first anyway unless it posed tremendous value. Nick himself wasn’t a first rounder, nor was Morgan Burnett, our most recent safety pick. And Charlie Peprah is a good back-up himself and solid spot starter.

The biggest culprit for the Packers’ defense’s demise is the departure of Cullen Jenkins. That destroyed our pass rush. B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews are the only ones capable of rushing the passer on the entire team, and as such they are easy to game-plan against. The OLB contingent has been either injured or underwhelming. The Packers most desperate need is a pass-rusher, whether it be a DL or an OLB. Those two spots are the only holes on the team.

RB might be a need, but Ryan Grant has played pretty well this year and might be re-signed (I have no clue about that), but even if he wasn’t I don’t think TT will look for a RB early. We have Starks and the injured rookie Alex Green on the roster for next year. Chances are we weep Grant or find some other mid-to-late round guy to take over. GB chooses not to run the ball, so spending a high pick on a back isn’t likely to happen. Wilson will probably be gone before that anyway.

CB is a depth need. We could always use another OL. Perhaps a QB to replace Flynn unless McCarthy likes Graham Harrell. Maybe another WR with DD’s retirement drawing near :-(
