Two more enter 2012 NFL Draft; may be new underclassmen record

Troy pass rusher Jonathan Massaquoi and Wyoming running back Alvester Alexander both decided to forgo their senior seasons today and enter the 2012 NFL Draft.

By our (very amateurish) count, that makes it 59 underclassmen who have declared for the NFL Draft. If they all maintain their declaration, it would be a new record for underclassmen in the NFL Draft. The record was set last season with 56 in the draft. The total I've accumulated is in question because the NFL may not consider a couple of the players as being underclassmen due to off-field or injury reasons.

Star-divide

Underclassmen have until Sunday to declare for the draft. Those who haven't signed with an agent have until Wednesday to rescind their declaration.

Massaquoi is a college defensive end who will have to shift over to linebacker in the NFL. At 24 and graduated, going pro was a smart choice for Massqauoi. He's a mid-round pick and in two seasons had 31 tackles for loss and 19.5 sacks.

Alexander finished second on the Cowboys in rushing yards with 695 on 152 carries to go along with six touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 200 yards.

The new CBA could be causing more underclassmen to declare early

I think it is probably because the new CBA has caused it be less worthwhile financially to go back to school and improve your stock. With the new CBA the second contract is where the big bucks are at, especially at certain positions such as RB and CB were players have a relatively short shelf life. I’m new to this board so sorry if this has already been discussed…

He was probably going to be beaten out for the starting job in 2012. I wonder if he even gets drafted.
