Rock out with your mock draft out: Mel Kiper
It' is officially draft season, which also means it's mock draft season. When it comes to mock drafts, none garners more attention than that of Mel Kiper's He released a new mock draft today, which you can read here. Note: It's In$ider content.
Skipping over the first pick should be commonplace. What isn't is who the Rams get projected to take second overall. Kiper goes with Oklahoma State Justin Blackmon. I can't agree with the pick. Blackmon, while very good, isn't a transcendent player because of size or athleticism and comes out of a pass-happy offense with the Cowboys.
The Rams could sign a free agent from the loaded group of wide receivers who will be available that would have the equivalent production and impact of Blackmon. They won't be able to sign a player who would have the same impact as offensive tackle Matt Kalil — which is, of course, assuming they don't trade out of the No. 2 overall pick.
The hot name among NFL Draft analysts is Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright. In Kiper's mock draft, he has him going to the Browns at pick No. 22. It would be a good pairing should the Browns choose to draft Robert Griffin III at No. 4. Another hot choice seems to be placing LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers on the Patriots. Without looking up history, I'm not sure how interested Bill Belichick would be drafting a redshirt sophomore.
One of the major points of contention I have with Kiper's mock draft is placing Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus on the Green Bay Packers. While he was greatly productive this season, he doesn't have the athleticism to play at linebacker.
One pick the Kiper projected that should really take off in popularity is placing offensive tackle Zebrie Sanders on the New York Giants. Considering the Giants will be drafting in the back-end of round one, they may need to reach on a tackle. It's their most obvious need, so it will be interesting to see which players are still available when they draft.
Read Kiper's full mock draft here.

We need a tackle before we need a guard
We have seen nothing out of Brewer, but at guard we’ve seen plenty of good from Petrus and Boothe, and Snee isn’t going anywhere, even if he’s had an off year. Doubt the Giants go LB either, just won’t be anyone there at the back end of the first round that they’ll want. Maybe Taze, but doubtful. The further the Giants go into the playoffs, the more I think Dwayne Allen is a legitimate possibility in the first.
Sanders to the Giants is an embarrassment
The guy has no upper-body strength. He’ll be lucky to weigh in at 300 lbs. The Giants had trouble with the running game, and Sanders is the answer? Has Kiper seen the Giants OL? Has he noticed we gave both of the Andrews brothers a chance? Weneeded a center last year, and we signed one 6-4 320. We drafted a 6-8 tackle in Brewer.
Maybe Kiper should spend more time studying NFL franchises instead of college games.
2012 mock (Manningham resigns) - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB / Chase Minnifield CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler LG / Ben Jones C-LG / Cordy Glenn LG-RT, 3: Keenan Robinson SAM, 4: Neiko Thorpe FS, 5: Vic Ballard RB / Brandon Bolden RB
(Manningham lost) - 1: Marvin McNutt WR, 2: Kevin Zeitler LG / Ben Jones C-LG / Cordy Glenn LG-RT, 3: Keith Tandy CB, 4: Neiko Thorpe FS, 5: Vic Ballard RB / Brandon Bolden RB
Who did he give to the Panthers?
I’d appreciate it

- Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
Were they to line up Kirkpatrick across from Chris Gamble, the Panthers would have a pair of corners with elite size and talent in a divison in which you can’t have enough good corners. Opponents completed a hair less than 65 percent of their passes against the weak Carolina secondary in 2011, and Kirkpatrick can provide an immediate upgrade. He has elite size for the position, at 6-foot-3 and nearly 200 pounds, but doesn’t give much away in cover skills. Kirkpatrick has some off-the-field questions that could hurt his stock, but reserving judgement for now, he’d be a fit here.
he's sometimes high
which we know due to recent events

"may need to reach"
Reese will never reach. He’ll draft the best player available, simple as that. We have Beatty coming back as our LT and James Brewer as our RT-in waiting. I’d rather they give big $$$ to Carl Nicks. That O-line would look good: Beatty-Nicks-Baas-Snee-MacKenzie/Brewer

The Giants were barely able to get under the cap last year
We’re probably not gonna resign KMac, Aaron Ross, and Manningham, so that’s only 9mill off the books.
Subtract rookie contracts, a couple “show-me” contracts for Goff and TT, and Eli’s extra 2mill cap hit, there’s nothing left for a big-money free agent.
GIANTS! 2011 NFC East Champs!
If Diehl gets released, that might open up some money outside of McKenzie, Ross, maybe Jacobs, and maybe Osi.
The Giants need to move mountains to get a guy like Nicks who will instantly improve the run game and protect Eli.

The Giants need a RT
McKenzie Sucks and we have seen nothing from Brewer to suggest he is ready to start in the NFL (He doesn’t even get activated ahead of Ugoh) but at he end of the 1st round I wouldn’t mind drafting a G or C like Konz the OL needs help everywhere

Why not just list the picks...
…for all the non-Insiders who would prefer to read this blog than put more pennies in ESPN’s pocket?! just sayin’
That would be highly unprofessional.

Who does he have the Texans taking?
Murphy’s 20th Military Law:

"Fuck em all. Go Texans."
Sanu WR from Rutgers
I like the position, but not the pick. I don’t see Sanu in the first round, especially being picked above Alshon Jeffrey.
I do, especially with the character & work ethic questions popping up about Jeffrey
I wouldn’t touch Jeffrey or Michael Floyd (& his 3 DUIs) with a 20 ft pole. I’d want either Dwight Jones, Nick Toon, or Sanu

Ehhh....
I think the Rams will trade the second over all pick. It just makes too much sense, however, trades are hard to predict. What’s to say the Jets don’t get sick of Sanchez and offer this year’s first and second, next year’s first and second, and another first? There’s also the Skins too, they might give them a truck load of picks too. This draft will be particularly hard to mock because of this.
Lions?
Happier than a pig in shit that I was wrong about Matthew Stafford since 2009!

The Giants don't reach for their picks
and they definitely don’t “have to” reach for anything. Sanders is really a bad pick there. Giants could definitely use OLs, but not Sanders.

Running back not that great a need for the Bucs compared to needs at CB or OLB
Gotta remember that the Bucs defense was more atrocious than the offense. And the collapse of the secondary (missed tackles, terrible coverage) was a large part of it. If Claiborne is on the boards when Tampa Bay selects, you better believe that they’ll go with him over Richardson. You can draft a good RB in the Third Round.
Time to shamelessly plug my book and short story!
Not to mention they're possibly looking at losing both their starting CBs
One possibly to retirement, the other possibly to jail time
