Georgia vs. Michigan State; Outback Bowl NFL Draft watch notes
In regard to the NFL Draft, for Georgia the Outback Bowl against Michigan State (1 p.m., ABC) is much more about the players who should come back as anything else.
The Bulldogs are expected to return quarterback Aaron Murray, pass rusher Jarvis Jones and defensive tackles John Jenkins and Kwame Gethers for next season. Even with those four returning, Georgia players will tattoo this year's NFL Draft. Four Bulldogs — cornerback Brandon Boykin, punter Drew Butler, offensive tackle Cordy Glenn and center Ben Jones — will all play in the Senior Bowl. The best of the bunch Glenn, who played left tackle for the first time this season. He'll be much better in the NFL at his natural position of left guard where he can use his power and in-line blocking ability.
Jones, a second-team all-conference choice, is a dominating center who gets into his stance without a wasted motion. He's not as fluid as Wisconsin's Peter Konz, but he can handle defensive tackles by himself.
One player who may go to the NFL a year early is tight end Orson Charles. Although Charles hasn't had the best of seasons with 44 receptions for 572 yards coming into the game. He's good in many areas, but not great.
Many of Michigan State's best players are seniors, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins. The Spartans' leader has a solid arm and gets good placement on his throws. Cousins has a tendency, though, to throw the ball into coverage and can be inconsistent.
Wide receiver B.J. Cunningham was Cousins' top target this season, with 72 receptions for 1,240 yards and 12 touchdowns. If a team needs a big wide receiver who has some physicality to his game, Cunningham would be a good choice. He's this year's version of Austin Pettis.
Inconsistency has been the knock on defensive tackle Jerel Worthy all season. He may be as naturally gifted as any tackle in this year's class, but doesn't get the most out of his ability. He's fast off the line of scrimmage and can disrupt the flow of opposing offenses. Despite an up-and-down year, Worthy is expected to enter the draft.
2013 NFL Draft watch: There are rumors that Michigan State cornerback Johnny Adams may jump to the NFL after today's game. He's a cornerback on the rise because he can be physical but still turn and run with almost any wide receiver he's faced.
