Seahawks mock through 4 rounds

Cincy falls in love with Trent Richardson and is willing to make a jump to get him. Seahawks trade their 1st (#12) and 3rd rounders for Cincy's #17 and 2nd rounder (#53)

1st round- Courtney Upshaw, OLB- Serious upgrade at OLB, but Aaron Curry's ghost makes people uneasy.

2nd round (sea)- Brock Osweiler, QB- they’ll like him, and make sure to get him, even at a reach.

2nd round (cin)- Nick Perry, DE- this would be a huge upgrade to the pass rush.

4th round- Austin Davis or Kirk Cousins, QB- will light a fire under the ass of anyone hoping to be the starter, thus elevating them all.

John Schnider showed last year that he's not afraid to reach a little to get someone the coaches like. He also likes the QB pool this year and grabs 2 (showing his Green Bay roots), opening the QB competition roller coaster in Seattle.

In other news, Sam Bradford and Alex Smith share reoccurring nightmares about the Seahawks D.

Nick Perry is very likely to be a first round pick

I am not sure Osweiler is a a Pete Carroll type of QB, here is what I have been lead to believe:

Many comments have been made about Seattle’s desire for a "point guard" quarterback. (referencing Barkley vs Luck)

Is Matt Barkley a point guard quarterback? http://seahawksdraftblog.com/luck-vs-barkley-who-fits-seattle-best

Not really. He’s more of a pocket passer who runs occasionally. He plays with "heavy legs" as I call it, meaning that he doesn’t look explosive or lightweight on his dropback and isn’t explosive when he takes off.

I agree

Perry is likely a 1st rounder.

Osweiler likely still available in the 4th.

I’m pretty sure Alabama runs a 3-4 Defense, so I’m not sure if Upshaw would easily transition to what the Hawks run. I agree, though, that we need LBs. We were forced to play Wright and Smith this year. Both could use competition. Plus, It would stink if Hawthorne went down. Who would play MLB?

I would like to see an RB chosen somewhere in the first 4 rounds. Even if/when we resign Lynch, we should prepare for Lynch to degrade over next couple of years.

I also hear a lot of talk about improving interior pass rush, so a DT who could supplant Branch would be cool. Depth behind Clemons and Bryant is also needed at DE.

My context for the Osweiler pick

Is based around JS reaching a bit last year for Carpenter. Also that Ponder was taken at 12, new CBA rules, blah blah… reaching isn’t so bad anymore.
I kinda figured that Perry would be a jackpot if he fell that far. Say he’s gone then, who do you get with that late 2nd rounder? Bruce Irvin would be fine by me. Carroll has said he wants more speed, Bruce is full of that.

Actually, watch him rise as the evaluation period progresses.

Mark my words, before all is said and done Osweiler is going in the first round. His measureables are off the charts. Look at the guys who made big runs up the draft board last year (Gabbert, Ponder and Locker). I believe this guy has a higher ceiling than all of them, and the things he does well are the things that are going to shine through at the combines and in his personal workouts. Plus, he’s a dynamic kid. He’s as impressive with a microphone in front of him as he is with a ball in his (huge) hand.

I agree with you on the Hawks trading down to pick up extra picks, I think that would be their preference in this draft. But if they end up liking Osweiler, they’re going to have to act on it in the first round.

ASU fan here

Oswieler is a good prospect not a great one. He is a project QB and no possible way, in any circumstance will he be selected in the 1st.

His arm is average, his pocket presence is average although he can scramble and extend plays with his legs. Most of his success came with short throws and screens to the flat where the recievers could make plays after the catch. The guy is no top prospect. I’m not trying to undermine you at all, just my opinion from watching the kid all season. He does have some upside due to his size, athleticism and decent accuracy. But I can’t see him going before the middle of the 3rd round.

I respect your opinion, but just watch.....

You’re already hearing the buzz from draft analysts. McShay has him in the first round now, as does Rob Staton. I can’t believe you think his arm is average. Maybe it’s because ASU’s offense didn’t ask him to throw the ball downfield a lot, but I’m telling you NFL scouts don’t agree with your assessment. I covered Drew Bledsoe in college and this guy reminds me so much of him from a raw skillset standpoint, except that he’s a better athlete. I’ve watched tape of 5 games and I see Osweiler make throws that other QB’s can’t even conceive of.

I agree with you that’s he’s a bit of a project, which is why I have written at length that he should be drafted and sat for at least a year (seahawksforever.blogspot.com) but NFL teams don’t care how ready you are to play these days. If they see the skillset that indicates you have the potential to be an elite QB, they aren’t going to wait around and hope you fall to them. No way Ponder, Locker and Gabbert go in the Top 12 ten years ago, but they all did last year.

It’s a different era now.

Let’s remember this debate, and check in with each other after the draft.

I wonder

If we could go Richardson… we are a run oriented team that is in position to get the best one while a qb will not be available…
