Cowboys Thoughts

This draft comes down to one thing in my opinion...depth. There are many things to consider when heading into a draft , the main two things that get talked about are BPA and need, the one thing they both have in common is value. I don't think enough can be said for how much of an impact value has on a draft.

Star-divide

Would I love a new safety? Of course! What Cowboys fan wouldn't? Our safety play has been deplorable at best. With Abe Elam and Gerald Sensabaugh we have two strong safeties starting, so that, in my mind eliminates Barron because he's a strong safety, what we need is a true center field type free safety. Only issue is we need to upgrade our whole secondary and as far as depth goes in this years draft the value for a cornerback in the second and third is much higher. Markelle Martin will be over drafted due to lack of depth, but if we pick him at 45 we'll sell ourselves short because there will be a handful of cornerbacks rated higher than him at that spot. so my ideal scenario for the Cowboys first three rounds goes as follows.

1. Decastro if he's available, if he isn't I go BPA CB/ Pass rusher Dl or LB

2. If Decastro is taken in the first then BPA CB/Pass rusher, if he isn't then BPA G/C

3. BPA G/C/CB/Pass rusher

4. BPA G/C/CB

Since I think Decastro will be gone by the time the Cowboys pick and drugs or not Dre K will be gone as well, my mock goes like this.

1. Michael Brockers, DL, LSU or Melvin Ingram, LB, SC

2. Stephon Gilmore CB, SC or Chase Minnefield, CB, VA

3. David Molk, C, Michigan

4. Lucas Nix, G, Pitt

Yeah I'm with you

Decastro or Ingram would make me happy. I wouldn’t lose any sleep if we rolled the dice on J. Jenkins either.

I like Poe

But I gotta disagree, I think Brokers will be better.

by Bermystar on Jan 22, 2012 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

well they are 2 different positions

Poe is a NT (3-4 or 4-3) and Brockers is a 3-4 DT or 3-4 DE

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

Can someone explain to me the hype behind Poe?

I get why the guy seems like a great investment (big guy, light on his feet), but it worries me a little that he wasn’t even named to the first-team of Conference USA by the coaches.

I think hyping him as a mid-1st round pick is overselling him a bit.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Finnegan to Rams

Finnegan is likely to go to the Rams and be with Jeff Fisher again. I don’t think the Cowboys would even have the cap space to pull of both of those FAs, but the Rams have plenty of room for them.

unfortunately,

it doesn’t look like the rams are going to have a ton of cap space this season

unless we get some contracts restructured and release a few players,

it looks to be 10 million in cap space

You mean Jason Smith?

that's before Smith

He’ll be sure to accept an offer he can’t refuse this year.

Cut him

Then the Chargers will void Marcus McNeil’s deal. Then let these poor (not really) guys have a fresh shot on a new teams hopefully healthy with small deals.

Well preliminary reports have Dallas with at least $10-20 million dollars to work with this next year

so I wouldn’t worry too much about Dallas being able to pay an impact free agent or two (especially with some of the contract magic that can be done these days).

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

I'd love to sign Nicks

Any help on the O-line is welcomed.

Jason Smith

Isn’t he taking up 10 million in cap this year by himself? He will be taking a big pay cut. I think I heard some thoughts that Jason Brown might be gone as well. Those are two pretty big guys that could free up a lot of money to spend elsewhere. What are your thoughts on those two?

by Auric on Jan 22, 2012 8:15 PM EST reply actions

yeah I hope both are gone

Smith should retire due to his concussion problems, and Brown just isn’t the player he was with Baltimore. If we can somehow get some cap space from those two, that would be great.

Cutting him this year doesn't just erase him from the cap.

Any of his prorated guaranteed money (which I assume there still is some on the contract) will be accelerated and count again next year’s cap for the Rams.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
