Ranking the 2012 Draft Prospects by Position - Offensive Tackles

Today I will take a look at the offensive tackle position for the upcoming draft. The OT class took a hit when Barret Jones and D.J. Fluker of Alabama decided to return to school but it is still a very good class.

1. Matt Kalil, USC – Kalil is the best non-QB in the class and will likely be a top 3 pick.

2. Jonathan Martin, Stanford – Martin is a fantastic prospect that excels in all areas of the game and should be a top 10 pick.

3. Riley Reiff, Iowa – Reiff’s strength is as a run blocker but he is an above average pass blocker and should be a top 15 pick.

4. Mike Adams, Ohio State – Adams is a pure RT prospect and he is a very good one at that. With a good interview at the combine, he could be a late first round pick

5. Nate Potter, Boise State – Potter has the ability to play LT in the NFL and did a great job protecting Kellen Moore. He could be a good fit for a team with a lefty QB like the Eagles or Broncos due to the fact that he blocked for a lefty QB in college.

After the jump see the rest of the OT prospects

Mayock has Reiff ranked #1 and you have him #3… explain why.

by Michael_Necci on Jan 25, 2012 8:57 AM EST reply actions

LOL

Reiff above Kalil? Explanation is not needed to say how fail that is.

Mayock's an idiot?

No

he’s being different for the sake of it. Kiper and him do that all the time, well I guess mostly him.

I have respected Mayock's opinion for a long time, but....

….feel his job doing Notre Dame games undoubtedly has lead him to focus his attention on them (and their opponents).
Translation = I am not sure he is a knowledgeable of college football as a whole, as in the past.

Mayock has always had some controversial rankings (disagreement with Kiper, Mcshay, others), and believe in the past his top 5 hasn’t came out until March. He probably felt pressure to get it out early.

Mayock having Reiff is very controversial, as Kalil has been considered the best LT in this draft for almost as long as Luck has been considered the best QB. Reiff or Martin as #2 is very debatable, but I personally agree 100% with the order of Dan’s top 4.

Potter and Reynolds: those two I am a little less sure on.
I am also not sure the extent of the Datko injury, but I am under the impression he could still be a top 90 pick, and would likely still have him over Potter and Reynolds. Nixon may be a sleeper?

by durst on Jan 25, 2012 9:18 AM EST reply actions

I agree Datko should be higher

Only the injury should limit him. He can play LT – I’d put him at 5.

Nate Potter is not that good.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Chase Minnifield CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler G, 3: A.J. Jenkins, WR, 4: Neiko Thorpe S, 5: Brandon Bolden RB, 6: Rishard Matthews WR, 6: some random LB, 7: BPA

why in the world is matt reynolds so high? he plays like his feet are attached to cinder blocks.
add in the fact that i thought both wagner and nixon were staying in school and mccants is left off entirely, and this list becomes something of a head scratcher

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

Does Adams good showing so far this week sway anyone's opinion that he could be LT prospect?

Also a question on Reiff, I was reading on RoTB that Iowa runs more of a zone blocking scheme and thus Reiff was best suited for that kind of running game in the pros. Truth?

I have thought all along (well, since last yr) that Adams was a LT prospect (and #20-40 prospect overall)

I had him #30 on my Oct 10th big board, even though at that point he had not played in 2011
http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2011/10/10/2476052/dursts-big-board

Now, don’t get me wrong, he is not a top 10 prospect, but better than Sam Baker in Atlanta, and Jeff Backus in Detroit, to name a few.

You’ve got 3 players on here who aren’t in the draft and how is Reynolds the 6th ranked tackle? He might not even be drafted in the top 4 rounds.

I think Mike Adams has potential to be a LT. I was hearing he was one of the standouts at practice so far and how well his foot speed looked. I definitely don’t think he can be placed as purely a RT prospect.
