Your Dream Draft

Hey guys. I posted this topic at Behind the Steel Curtain and figured it could work here as well. What is your ideal draft for your team. It can be a dream and something that is unlikely to happen but just post it in the comments. However, don't put a first round prospect in the 3rd round or anything silly like that. You can take into account the compensatory picks you are supposed to get and you can trade picks. My Dream Steelers draft is after the jump

Star-divide

Round 1 Pick 24 - David DeCastro, OG, Stanford - DeCastro falling here is highly, highly unlikely but it is possible. Maybe he comes to the Combine slightly out of shape. Maybe he is slightly injured (but decides to play) and gets abused by Defensive prospects. Who knows, but his kid is going to be a top 5 guard in the NFL and I dream of landing him.

Round 2 Pick 24 - Brandon Washington, OG/OT, Miami - And the Steelers add another offensive guard. This would be an awesome second round pick and one that is very possible. Washington is a fantastic, and versatile prospect that can play 4 spots (everywhere but center). However, I think a line of Gilbert/DeCastro/Pouncey/Washington/Colon would be one of the very best in the NFL.

Round 3 Pick 24 - LaMichael James, RB, Oregon - Not a need but adding a player like James would give our offense a whole new dimension. James can take the top off a defense and is capable of taking it to the house on every play. He is also a very tough runner that could handle 15 to 20 touches a game, if needed.

Round 4 Pick 24 - Audie Cole, ILB, N.C. State - Cole is a very good ILB prospect with a draft range anywhere from the 3rd to 4th round. I would love to land him here and give him a year to learn from the best. He has the athleticism and talent to be a very good starter in this league.

Round 5 Pick 24 - Jarius Wright, WR, Arkansas - Wright will likely run in the 4.3's at the Combine and has great hands. He is undersized but would give the Steelers another threat to this dangerous offense. He can also return kicks and punts and be a special teams gunner, which would allow him to make the roster despite the crowded WR position.

Round 6 Pick 24 - Delvin Johnson, NT, Marshall - Here me out. I know a lot of you would be upset at not taking a NT until the 6th round, but Johnson is a hell of a prospect. At 320 pounds, he has the size and the strength to be a run stopping NT. However, unlike the other NT prospects in the draft, he can actually rush the passer. He is the only NT in this draft that I think could be a 3-down NT. His stock right now is in the 7th round but I would love to see him taken in the 6th to make sure we get him.

Round 7 Pick 24- Randy Bullock, K, Texas A&M - Bullock has a strong leg and good accuracy. He is slightly worse than Kai Forbath but I would rather take Bullock in the 7th than Forbath in the 5th.

Round 7 Compensatory - Omar Bolden, CB, Arizona State - Bolden came into the year as a possible 1st round prospect but a torn ACL prevented him from playing at all. His stock now ranges from the 6th round to undrafted and the fact that he won't be able to participate in the Combine makes me think we can get him here. However, despite the injuries, he is an incredible talent that can lock down WR's in man coverage. I could see him making the roster and becoming a starter by the middle of the season, he is that good.

Round 7 Compensatory - Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse - Nassib is an average QB prospect who projects best as a backup QB. Thankfully, that is exactly what we need. He is a little mobile and has good accuracy and could be our 3rd QB until Byron retires and then Nassib could take over as the backup.

Falcons

Falcons dream is to have a first round pick!

by durst on Jan 25, 2012 5:45 PM EST reply actions

The Falcons are without a 1st or 4th round pick

If someone who we have rated as a borderline first round pick, falls to us in the second round, we have to take that player.
With the 21st pick in 2nd round being our first pick, we MUST go best available, NOT need.

Who could fall? Dwayne Allen is unlikely, either Coby Fleener, and Orson Charles are likely to be there at pick #53.

John Abraham could be on his way out. It is difficult enough to find a pass-rusher in the first round, but still not impossible in the second. Perhaps either Vinny Curry or Cam Johnson will be there?

If we miss out on a TE in the 2nd or 3rd, then Ladarius Green should be the TE we pick in the 5th round, while Josh Norman or Donnie Fletcher are DBs that could still be there in the 5th round.

Atlanta
2. Vinny Curry DE
3. Casey Hayward CB
5. Ladarius Green TE

I’m ready to call CB Dominique Franks as a starter in 2012, in place of free agent Brent Grimes, and ahead of the smaller Chris Owens, but would love to get someone like Jameel Flemming, Shawn Prater, or Casey Hayward with our 3rd round pick.

Well lets hope it happens then because you won’t feel that way when he’s putting Ben on his back. He doesn’t have off the field issues he is just a really intense player. Ray is a guy he has said he looks up to and Ray will take him under his wing. Also we have Suggs and our OLB coach Monachino who both are from ASU as well. Plenty of people to help guide him. Everybody said last year that taking Jimmy would be horrible too and he’s been a stud both on and off the field for us. Ozzie will gladly take another top talent that slips to him.

Yes, but dreams must be rooted in reality

NFL prohibits a new contract to be restructured in the same league year. He’s due the money before the next league year starts, so if a trade happens, he would have been paid already, & it’s highly doubtful they pay him & then trade him. The only chance the Colts have of keeping Peyton Manning is if he takes a massive pay cut to become the Colts’ offensive coordinator

Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He needs to show more awareness in the pocket and move to extend plays, but nothing good comes of him leaving the pocket. He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.

I like him because he can play ILB or OLB. Guy is a vicious tackler.

Flacco should have the awareness of Roethlisberger, the elusiveness of Vick, the control of the offense of Manning, the leadership of Brady, the accuracy of Brees, and the arm strength of … Flacco? - Ampallang

Yeah he explodes into people. I don’t think OLB needs to be addressed that early, but if he’s on the board in round 2 I think Ozzie would have a tough time passing on him. I really like the tape I have seen on him.

I should have put OLB/ILB because honestly, he could play any LB position.

Meh i think we will draft a TE somewhere but i would rather sign a couple solid tight ends in free agency

I think signing a cheap TE would be better than signing a S or CB considering they can get pricey.

by Jonathan Hake on Jan 26, 2012 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

I think my TE

want is from watching Pope/Becht playing on the field… I looked at the FA TE list and nothing really exciting there. Finley of coarse is the best (probably going to resign with GB) then it drops to Fred Davis, Martellus Bennett, John Carlson, etc.
I agree that S is a big need for KC. Not really starting S caliber but athletic/potential caliber. I dont think CB depth is a need to fill in the draft at all. Now that would change a bunch if Carr left. I think Daniels/Arenas/Brown are all locked into the roster(Daniels needs to be resigned but KC should be his best offer)
I would swap Hayward with Green. Talented players who will get on the field year one and help the team. Once he adds some Man weight he will be a heck of an all around TE.

Gators RB to try out for Olympics … Florida RB Jeff Demps has reportedly decided not attend the combine or any other pre-draft workout. Instead, Demps plans to devote his full energies to trying to make the U.S. 2012 Olympics sprint team.

Demps, of course, will still be available at this spring’s draft and there is a chance that some team could take a flyer on him with a late round pick.

Good luck with getting a RB who rushed for 27 TD’s this year in the 6th round. That guy goes in the 3rd, maybe 2nd with a strong combine.

Eagles

Based on the recent disappointment with the "dream team", I’ve learned to be specific about how I want my dreams to be fulfilled. In my dream, these players do not merely fall to the Eagles in the draft; they also live up to expectations on the field. The second specification allows me to choose a few players whose performance has not always matched their hype.

1 Quinton Coples — would wreak havoc as a pass-rushing DT in the wide-9
2 Alshon Jeffery — a tall athletic red zone threat
2 Mike Adams — moves to RT to protect Vick’s blind side
3 Travis Lewis — finally some elite talent at LB
4 Cam Johnson — another “fastball” for the DE rotation
4 Ladarius Green — another tall athletic red-zone threat (Eagles need a 3rd TE)
5 Joe Adams — Djax, Maclin, & Adams overwhelm the opposition with speed
6 Asa Jackson — quickness and agility for the nickleback position
6 Tank Carder — a stabilizing force at MLB
6 Jeff Demps — track star speed for the RB position (available in my dreams)

Jeffery and Adams in the 2nd

Both currently have a second round grade on CBSsports.com, which is where I got my rankings. I just checked two other sites, and Adams would be in the second round of the MTD top 100, and Jeffery would be in the second round at NFP. Can you recommend a more realistic source for rankings? I’m new at this.

Ranking the rankers

Thanks. I just found this website which compares the accuracy of several “Top 100 big boards” over the past five years. I might prefer a different scoring system, but at least it provides an objective comparison. Sorry if this is getting off topic…

Yeah, I have seen that

the problem is with how current they are. I like NEpatriotsdraft for their evaluations but their rankings are pretty dated. The sites on the list you linked will all be updated by April but IMO, right now MTDs Big Board is the most up to date altho Rob Rang at CBS sports is also pretty good at staying current

JAGs DRAFT - using NEPatriotsDraft.Com Top 100 and DraftTek Top 250

1(7) OT Reilly Rieff: RT was a revolving door for DEs. quick fix. Britton to backup or guard.
2(39) CB Chase Minnefield. Mathis may not return. Need a corner across from Cox. Minnefield is injured so falls to here.
3(71) CB Brandon Boykin. Undersized but quick, tough and competitive CB. Ideal nickel.
4 (103) DE Jake Bequette. Developmental DE. Strong showing at Senior Bowl.
5 (135) WR Joe Adams. deep threats and soft hands. I fully expect the Jags to get a top WR free agent too.
6 (167) WR Marvin Jonse. deep threats and soft hands.Strong Senior Bowl.

People assume because our recievers are a laughing stock we will waste early picks on them. I’d prefer to get a surefire one in FA and make use of the depth of this year’s class by getting studs later. RT, CB and DE are still problems I also wouldn’t mind a developmental LB (Wagner/Carder/Robinson/Davis) and a pass catching TE if they’re BPA..

What could of happened; did.

Bills

Trade 1st and 3rd to Cincinatti for 1st, 1st

1a) Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
The Bills need help all across the defense, and while pass rusher might be a bigger need, there are more 1st round pass rushers to choose from with the second 1st rounder than there are cornerbacks.

1b) Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois
The Bills have no idea what scheme their going to play on defense next year, but it will likely be some combination of both. Mercilus can play in both schemes, and can do so effectively.

2) Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
No surprise that the Bills need some help on offense as well. Sanu is the best non-1st round WR, and has both good speed and good size.

4a) J.K. Schaffer, ILB, Cincinnati
With one more interior defensive player, the Bills will be very strong, and relatively young, up the middle. Schaffer is a playmaker, but is especially productive in run support. If you’ve watched the Bills at all these past few years, you know that run-support players are something we desperately need.

4b*) Orsen Charles, TE, Georgia
Since I’ve been watching football, I’ve never seen the Bills have any real type of threat at TE. Maybe Charles can finally change that.

4c**) Andrew Datko, OT, Florida State
Every year, our o-line gets destroyed by injuries and we never have enough depth. Datko is a great value here, and it fits the Bills mold of not drafting a tackle before the 4th round.

5) Donte Paige-Moss, DE/OLB, North Carolina
There were some early-season mock drafts that had DPM going in the early first round. Obviously things didn’t go well for him this season, but the fact that he was ever projected that high (granted, not by experts) shows that he must have some potential. Also, you can never have enough pass rushers.

6) Conner Vernon, WR, Duke
Another big WR. I don’t know much about him except that he’s 6’2", and we can always use more big bodies on the offense. Like they say, you can’t teach size.

7) John Brantley, QB, Florida
We need to try to develop somebody behind Fitz, and at this point there isn’t going to be much to choose from.

*4b is my projection for the last pick that Seattle owes us for Marshawn Lynch. He had a great year for them, so I can’t see it being anything lower than a 4th rounder.

**4c is the pick we got from Baltimore for Lee Evans
