What's Stopping Nick Foles From Being the 3rd Best Quarterback in the Draft?

The race to be the third quarterback has officially begun. The draft process has started and the general belief is that Andrew Luck will be taken by the Indianapolis Colts number one overall and Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III will follow shortly after. Who comes behind those two, is anyone's guess. Ryan Tannehill was thought as the next best quarterback, but he broke his foot which will set him back in the evaluation process. Brandon Weeden had a great season for Oklahoma State, but he will be 29 half way into his rookie season. Many other names are going to be throw into the equation, but as it stands right now, nobody is a clear leader. Nick Foles might well be one of those names that could jump up above the rest of the pack (behind Luck and Griffin III). But what is it that's holding Foles back? I believe his biggest weakness is his footwork. He consistently struggles to step into his throws under pressure and when he has time in the pocket, he plants his foot to his left rather than in front of him. Let's have a look at the tape.

I'll start with the under pressure throws. When his pocket starts to close in on him, he plants his front foot and rocks off his back foot to throw instead of stepping into the throw.

Underpressurethrow1a_medium

Here the pocket has started to push back on him. I've circled his front foot. He plants it here just before he winds up to throw.

Star-divide

Underpressurethrow1b_medium

Notice how his front foot remains planted, but he takes a half step back with his right foot to help build up power into his throw.

Underpressurethrow1c_medium

As Foles goes to throw, you can see his front foot is still in pretty much the same spot it was before. He hasn't stepped forward into the throw to help him transfer his weight and get torque behind his throw.

Underpressurethrow1d_medium

After the ball is released, his foot is still planted in the same position. He completely fails to step into his throw, but rather, he almost leans into it. It's closer to a back-foot throw, and will suffer similar results, mainly having little velocity behind the throw.

When a team can get consistent pressure, it can mess with Foles' footwork. When he gets into the rhythm of leaning into throws instead of stepping into them because of a pass-rush, it begins to become natural to him even when he has a clean pocket.

Notstepingintothrow1a_medium

Here we are later in the game. Foles has a clean pocket to throw from, but because he's been previously under pressure, his muscle memory makes him fall into bad habits. He plants his foot before he winds up.

Notstepingintothrow1b_medium

Foles again leans into the throw, which again means he can't properly transfer his weight to his front foot and put as much velocity behind the throw. He ends up under throwing his receiver and nearly gets intercepted by a trailing cornerback.

The other thing I've noticed with Foles is that he will occasionally fall into a trend of opening his body too much. This happens when he plants his front foot more to his left than in front of him.

Sidestepthrow1a_medium

His feet are fine here as he targets his receiver running a slant to his left.

Sidestepthrow1b_medium

Notice how wide he steps. He's almost front on to his receiver because of how wide that step is. This means he can't open his hips much more than they are already, limiting his ability to generate power into his throw.

Sidestepthrow1d_medium

Which is evident here, as the receiver has to dive back towards the ball to try and catch it. In the end, the ball is ruled incomplete.

These are huge issues that Foles will need to work on and improve throughout the draft process if he hopes to be the third quarterback taken. Do you guys believe he can overcome this issues? Should he be the third quarterback taken? Should he be a first rounder? Let me know in the comments.

The talent is there

All he needs is a good coach. I would not blame someone from taking him in the 1st.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler G, 3: A.J. Jenkins, WR, 4: Neiko Thorpe S, 5: Vick Ballard RB, 6: Rishard Matthews WR, 6: some random LB, 7: BPA

"Just needs a good coach"

He needs a good coach and 2 seasons to develop. This shows up primarily when he is under pressure which normally indicates it is a default behavior. He has already been coached up, he needs LOTS of repetition so that he doesn’t have a Tebow like regression when he finds himself in a game situation.

This is exactly my thought.

Would love for the Redskins to take him.

Dear Passionate fan, I know you are passionate, but please reply with a logical answer or I will ignore you.

Redskins would be a good place for him

I think San Fransisco would be to. Getting in with a good QB teacher like Shanny or Harbaugh is key

Redskins would be a bad place for him imo. We don’t need a QB that is going to sit for two years. (reasoning: our current QB situation, bad mentors).

I have to agree with Kevin.

Mike Shanahan might not have the time in D.C to develop him.

by UkRedskin on Feb 1, 2012 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

This was actually what I was getting at. Tannehill would need a season, Weeden may only need 4 games, so there is really no incentive to go Foles. If neither of those work they could wait a round or 2 and grab Brock Osweiler (great arm, great size)

Foles

Nice breakdown.

I like Foles arm talent a lot.
Imo he’s up there with Tannehill and BrockO for best pure arm talent in this draft class.
He doesn’t have the best footwork in this draft class but its not a deal breaker for me.(not saying it is for you)
Foles does it more then the top prospects but all these QB will throw off balance faling into and out of their throws from time to time.
My QB list goes: Griff, Luck, Tannehill (if 100% recovered), Russell Wilson, Foles/Weeden.
I value athleticism and playmaking and for me Griff/Luck/Tannehill and Wilson all trump Foles in athleticism and playmaking even though all except Tannehill have lesser arm talent.

A lot of talent is there but...

seems to be an underachiever even at UA. Footwork can be fixed. I wonder how much that terrific arm allows him to be lazy in the pocket. Motivation may be the key where this guy falls; He really needs to be coached up. Don’t think he will fall to a place where it makes sense for the Skins to get him. Don’t see him as a Day 1 starter or 1st Round pick.

Foles is underwhelming.

He’s Ryan Mallet without the accuracy and mechanics. Tall, slow, wild.

I’ve got Osweiler as the clear #3 QB, followed by the Tannehill/Cousins/Weeden cluster, and Foles as a late round gamble.

Osweiler #3?

Why?
How can you describe tall and wild as knocks against Foles yet have Osweiler as the ‘clear #3’?

Because one guy has wheels, while the other doe's not.

Foles reminds me of Matt Schaub

I think he’ll go in the 2nd or 3rd round to a team that has a QB and is willing to let him learn.

If the Giants had extra 2nd or 3rd round picks I think he’d be a great pick there in order to learn from Eli, Killdrive and basically the whole offense. Then turn around and deal him for picks later on.
