Brock Osweiler, the great QB hope in the 2012 NFL Draft
Without Southern California's Matt Barkley or Oklahoma's Landry Jones, the 2012 NFL Draft looked like it would be light on quarterbacks. Enter towering Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler.
Sources tell the Scout.com Arizona State site Devils Digest that Osweiler will hold a news conference Friday to announce that he's entering the 2012 NFL Draft. If there were a quarterback who looked like a video game create-a-player, it's Osweiler. Standing 6-foot-8, he's the tallest quarterback in the nation and has an incredibly strong arm. Unlike bigger quarterbacks like Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens or Ryan Mallett of the New England Patriots, Osweiler isn't simply a statue in the pocket, either. The former high school basketball player has nimble feet and can elude pressure.
The tools for stardom are there for Osweiler. His reasoning for going pro likely runs deeper than simply a lack of talent at the position in the draft, though.
There has been speculation that Osweiler was considering a transfer to UCLA because he'll graduate this year. That's where former ASU coach Noel Mazzone is the new offensive coordinator. Under Mazzone, Osweiler transformed as a quarterback. Prior to his junior season, Osweiler shortened and quickened his throwing motion.
The initial results for Osweiler were positive. He finished his junior season completing 63.2 percent of his passes for 4,036 yards and 26 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions. His standout game came in September against Missouri when he completed 75 percent of his passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns.
As a prospect, Osweiler is still raw. He's started in just over a year's worth of games and will at times revert to his old, bad habits. He also had a tendency to put the ball in bad spots, especially when his team needed to come back in a game. He also played in an offense at ASU that was predicated on the short passing game.
In a draft starved of talent past Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, Osweiler is the great quarterback hope. In April, it may be impossible for a team to overlook Osweiler's extremely high potential.. He's as naturally talented as any quarterback in this year's class — that include Griffin. A team with an established veteran quarterback could take a chance on Osweiler as early as the second round.

I feel like
he could have a Colin Kaepernik rise. Especially with the new “everybody’s eligible” bowl game.

Now this draft just got fun
I gushed about Osweiler in the previous article. I was able to see him play a couple of times early in the season, including the Missouri game. Major arm strength, good accuracy, good size. Sure he needs some seasoning. But if you need a QB, you’re probably planning on losing a lot of games anyway. Let him have a Gabbert year.
I could not blame a team for taking him Top 10.
lol at "Gabbert year"
the next step down from that is a “Clausen incident”

Don't know anything about the guy
but 6’8? Holy crap. A far cry from Drew Brees, I dunno how that guy sees over his linemen.
He doesn't always
He takes deep drops and gets good blocking to open up lanes to see between the linemen

I know a guy who goes to ASU,
and he can confirm that Brock Osweiler is in fact very tall.
Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Watch some tape of their O
He makes his TE’s look short.
I can see a team taking Osweiler in the late first
there’s really too much talent and athleticism, and of course there’s the 6"8 thing.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I would not take Osweiler before the 4th round
He doesn’t impress me much.

I was impressed when I saw how tall he was
then I saw him play and I was like meh…
And when we win, we want to dominate. We want to take guys out. We want to hurt guys. We want to win. We just want to dominate, hit them in the mouth. - Rathman

How many tall (over 6'5") QBs have had success in the NFL?
I think being too tall (over 6’5") becomes a disadvantage for QBs, and many other non lineman positions as well.

Isn't Peyton Manning 6'6?

Most tall QBs have had no athleticism
Oddly sized white guys are not known for athletic achievement. I cannot recall too many QBs that big.
I hate those new ASU uniforms
Gotta have Sparky on the helmet.

Could he be the Blaine Gabbert of this draft?
As no one really thought he’d declare, but he does and changes the landscape of the draft…
Sure sounds like it to me!
I'll be very surprised if he makes it out of round 2 just based on potential alone.
He needs work, but the tools are there.

He could be really effective on QB sneaks
I’d take him in the 3rd for this reason

Hope he gets a chance
Loved watching him here in Tempe. Wish he could have stayed for his Senior year, but I’m wishing him luck in the NFL.
He is raw, but he has all the physical tools to succeed. He was also a good leader and even though a good chunk of the team seemed to quit this year he never gave up and he always kept competing.
