2012 Compensatory Draft Pick Predictions

I have again this year decided to try to predict compensatory draft picks to feed my draft obsession. Last year I did rather well, in that I was able to correctly assign picks for players with the exception of Seattle and Baltimore, where a midseason contract renegotiation with Cory Redding that I was not aware of gave Baltimore a pick instead of Seattle receiving a rather high pick from losing Burleson. I was also off by a round for a few picks, most of which I can relate to playing time differential.

I again claim no credit for the basis behind this work, as I did nothing original. I shamelessly used AdamJT13's publicly posted guidelines as best as I could. You can find his work at adamjt13.blogspot.com. Unfortunately it looks like he has abandoned his research. If you are unfamiliar with his work, the basics that affect comp picks are:

1. Players that are cut or not tendered as RFAs and ERFAs are not counted.

2. Players earning minimum salaries do not count.

3. Each player signed cancels out one player lost.

4. The round of the pick awarded is primarily determined by the annual value of the contract signed. Signed players cancel out lost players with equal contracts, then lower contracts, before canceling out higher contracts.

Star-divide

This year was an unusual year in that the new labor contract virtually eliminated RFAs, and does so in the future as well. Also, because of the shortened time before the season, a lot of contracts went unreported, which means that I had to spend a lot of time looking for the information. There remain about a dozen players for which I failed to find information, and this is noted where relevant below.

I awarded 28 normal comp picks. I actually am leaning towards this number being 27, but I wanted to show the possible scenarios below. I am fairly confident in this number, but less confident in their order, because I am not sure how much the amount of playing time alters the placement by salary. Last year it lowered Artis Hicks significantly, but not AJ Feeley, who did not take a snap. I awarded 0 net value picks (value difference between players lost and signed). Since 32 comp picks must be awarded, that leaves 4-5 additional picks at the end, which according to AdamJT13 follows the order that would be used if there were an eighth round.

I will first list the comp picks awarded and then provide the related team free agent activity at the end. I am not explaining teams that did not get comp picks to save time. But if you want an explanation or additional information for any of the 32 teams, let me know.

Compensatory Picks Awarded (round - team - player lost)

3 - Oakland - Nnamdi Asomugha

3 - Minnesota - Sidney Rice

3 - Oakland - Zach Miller (possibly a 4)

4 - Green Bay - Cullen Jenkins

4 - Minnesota - Ray Edwards (possibly no pick, see below)

4 - Indianapolis - Clint Session (possibly a 6 for Johnson, see below)

4 - Baltimore - Dawan Landry

4 - Green Bay - Daryn Colledge

4 - Dallas - Stephen Bowen

4 - Oakland - Robert Gallery (possibly a 5 or no pick, see below)

6 - New York Giants - Kevin Boss (possibly a 5)

6 - New York Jets - Shaun Ellis (possibly a 5)

6 - Indianapolis - Charlie Johnson (possibly a 4 for Session, see below)

6 - Cleveland - Eric Wright

6 - New York Jets - Brad Smith

6 - Cleveland - Matt Roth

6 - Atlanta - Michael Koenen (possibly no pick, see below)

7 - New York Jets - Drew Coleman

7 - Carolina - Jeff King (possibly a 6, it's complicated)

7 - Pittsburgh - Matt Spaeth

7 - New York Giants - Steve Smith (possibly no pick, see below)

7 - Green Bay - Brandon Jackson

7 - Indianapolis - Bob Sanders

7 - Cleveland - Lawrence Vickers

7 - Green Bay - Jason Spitz

7 - Pittsburgh - Nick Eason

7 - New York Jets - Braylon Edwards

7 - Cleveland - Jason Trusnik

And the additional picks:

7 - St. Louis

7 - Indianapolis

7 - Minnesota

7 - Tampa Bay

7 - Cleveland (if a pick is lost above)

The predictions above assume that Reggie Kelly, Devin Aromashadu, Steve Weatherford, and Maurice Stovall received minimum salaries. If Stovall received a higher salary, Tampa Bay will get a 7th round selection. I assumed that Gradkowski got a significant enough salary to be included in the calculations - this does not affect Cincinnati, but it would cost Oakland their pick for Gallery. I could not find salary numbers for Floyd Womack or Dimitri Patterson, which would only affect Cleveland, but my predictions should generally be fine unless Patterson made significantly more than Womack. The location of the pick could change - possibly Trusnik is the one cancelled out. I also could not find salary numbers for Turk McBride or Marvin Mitchell, which would only affect New Orleans, and again only if Mitchell made significantly more than McBride. Of all these assumptions in this paragraph, I am fairly confident except for Weatherford. I could see him making enough to knock out the Steve Smith pick [*UPDATE: Weatherford does not qualify, Giants get the pick]. Neither the Jets or Cleveland could benefit much from my wrong assumptions because they already received the maximum four picks. The limit on four compensatory picks cost Green Bay an additional 7th rounder for Korey Hall.

UPDATE 1/10: Now that Sanders does not qualify, if Brandon Siler's contract with KC qualifies, then SD could get a 5th for losing Burnett.

An interesting situation comes into play with Indianapolis' highest pick. It only came to light a few years ago that compensation for 10-year veterans will not exceed a 5th round pick regardless of salary. However, it appears to be unknown whether the salary, or the adjusted 5th round pick, affects how another player is canceled out. If Kerry Collins' contract number is used, it would cancel out Session and result in a 6th round compensation for Charlie Johnson. If the 5th round value is used, it would cancel out Johnson and give Indy a 4th rounder for Session.

Explanations (with contract signed):

Atlanta -

  • Lost: Dahl (4 yr $16 million), Koenen (6 yr $19.5 million)
  • Signed: Edwards (5 yr $30 million)

Pittsburgh -

  • Lost: Spaeth (3 yr $6 million), Eason (2 yr $2 million)

Other Random Comments:

Indy fans should not only be worried about their 4th round pick. Collins' cap number for 2012 is $11.25 million. He needs to be disposed of properly.

If San Francisco fans are disappointed in Braylon Edwards now, you should know that signing him cost you a 4th round pick for losing Baas.

Minnesota fans should be thanking St. Louis. That one year deal for $1.25 they gave Leber saved the comp pick for losing Edwards, a 4th.

Neither Kirk Morrison, Tommy Thigpen, or Brad Smith contributed much for Buffalo. But signing two of them cost the Bills a 3rd rounder for losing Posluszny.

I know the Cincinnati fans wanted their 3rd for Joseph. But he was the only qualifying free agent you lost. Plenty were signed in return, including Lawson, Howard, Gronkowski, and Scaife.

LATE ADDITION:

Just realized I should give an approximation of the annual salary ranges of picks.

3 - $6.5/$7 million and greater

4 - $5 to $6.5/$7 million

5 - $4 to $5 million

6 - $2.5/2.75 to $4 million

7 - $1 to $2.5/2.75 million

awesome post

just wondering, why do you have Jeff King as “it’s complicated”?

by vitzeng on Jan 6, 2012 1:55 AM EST reply actions

Carolina has the most wiggle room

Moore, Mare, and Edwards are in the gray intersection of 6th/7th round value. Mare adds in the difficulty of being a kicker – I’m note sure to what degree that affects his adjustment for playing time. So I could see you getting a 6th for Marshall, or either a 6th or 7th for Moore.

Marshall is definitely a 6th and King a 7th.

this is always a "rec before reading" post every year. Awesome work, mate.

One thing pertaining to the Giants, though….I don’t think Weatherford was a minimum contract guy. I think he makes $700K, though I don’t think that affects it too much.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-giants/steve-weatherford/

Also, I might have missed this, but does re-signing your own guys affect your comp pick status?

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 6, 2012 7:33 AM EST reply actions

Big thanks

Spotrac is one of the sites I use, can’t believe I did not find Weatherford’s number there. They had a few salaries this year that other sites did not have. Last year when I did this they had nothing.

For his experience $685k would be the minimum. But $700k would not qualify him for the equation, so we get the SSmith pick.

Resigning your own players does not count.

49ers lost Baas, Franklin, Lawson, Clements, Spikes

and signed Rogers, Edwards and Goodwin

I think they will be getting a compensatory pick in there somewhere.

Braylon was 1 year 1.6 million
Rogers was 1 year 4 million
Goodwin was 3 years 10.9 million

Baas was 5 years 27.5
Franklin was 1 year 4 million
Lawson was 1 year 3 million
Clements was 2 years 10.5 million
Spikes was 3 year 9 million

Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

Rogers made the probowl and none of the free agents that left did

so niners lose that one too… Also everyone who we signed started on the team and I don’t think the people that left played that much…

I think you'll settle for your win-loss record

Baas started most of the Giants games, missed a few with injuries. I believe Spikes started in San Diego, La Boy got significant playing time there, and Clements and Lawson started for Cincy. I heard Clements played well this year, must have been all the money you gave him in his pockets slowing him down in SF.

Kerry Collins

I wonder if the fact that he was a retired player affects his how his contract will be treated.

by invisibulman on Jan 6, 2012 12:42 PM EST reply actions

I am saying no

Because he was a natural unrestricted free agent. The effect on Tennessee is the same. They lost a player to another team. If retirement wiped the slate clean, a player could use it to get out of a contract he did not like.

Re: Titans Comp Picks

You have none listed. They lost Jason Babin to Philly (where he signed a sizeable deal and had a monstrous year) and Stephen Tulloch to Detroit. They signed Matt Hasselbeck. I would have had Babin netting them a third, but even with the Hass signing I think the Titans receive a fourth rounder.

You have been banned from Stampede Blue.

Tennessee was busy

4 lost: Collins (2 – $14), Babin (5 – $27.5), Scaife (1 – $1), Tulloch (1 – $3.25)

4 signed: Hasselbeck (3 – $20), Graham (3 – $8.25), Ruud (1 – $4), Shaun Smith (3 – $7.25)

I looked into whether you would get a net value pick because Babin received such a large contract. But AdamJT13 had it that you combine the value of all of the contracts, and the players lost had to greatly exceed (at least double) the players signed. Your guys lost made $16.5 million, and guys signed made $15.9 million. That’s not even close.

There has to be 32 comp picks

If they get through the regular comp picks and they haven’t distributed 32, they just tack picks onto the end of the 7th round, starting with the team with the first overall pick.

The MtD folks figured 27 comp picks, which meant there were 5 more that had to be distributed. So, the teams that pick 1-5 overall each get another selection at the end of the 7th round.

I hope these picks are right for Minnesota. An extra 3rd and 4th in a draft as deep as this one would be awesome.

From what I can determine Orton will not count

Players signed during the season are not counted as lost by their previous team or gained by their new team, nor can they can be considered lost the following year. There is a set period of time during the year in which players have to be signed.

I don’t know why. I would guess it’s because they don’t consider the short-term player (Orton) an important piece of their new team.

Thank you (for the 1st comment)

And you signed LaBoy and Spikes from San Fran.

Now that Shake corrected my listing on Bob Sanders, though, you should be in the running for a net value pick. Sproles + Burnett have a value of $8.75 million/yr. LaBoy and Spikes have a value of $4 million/yr.

by ct17 on Jan 7, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

If Travis Laboy cost the Chargers a comp..

There’s also Brandon Siler who signed a qualifying deal with KC, that deal should cancel Laboy’s easily at 1.5 per year; especially considering he was extended this year. Now Siler didnt play a down this year but that shouldnt matter. The Sproles’ deal is above the Spikes’ deal and should cancel it no problem. It’s also possible that Legadu signed a qualifying deal with the Panthers. Meaning the Burnett deal should yield a comp in the 5th round range. The Chargers usually get the comp part of FA right, just wish they were better at the other parts. Great job and thanks for the post again ct. Also I think you have to count Smiley as a Raiders addition/ Fish loss

Winning

by Foilhat on Jan 8, 2012 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Do you have a source for Siler's salary?

I could not find one. Can’t find a number for his new contract either. Best I got was a guess from a fan that it was a 1-year, minimum deal because he knew he was going nowhere in San Diego (they spent high picks on Butler and Mouton), and he would get a chance to compete for a starting job in KC. He’d either start and earn a better contract, or be free to go elsewhere. It made sense.

Naanee left for a minimum contract. That surprised me, but WRs have not been doing well in free agency. Smiley retired before playing for the Raiders, that discounts him as it means he would not have been available to play anyway, but I double-checked it and he was also cut – by Jacksonville where he went after Miami.

by ct17 on Jan 8, 2012 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

I have no source on the Siler contract

It was not a min deal I would guess considering he signed fairly early in FA. A min deal would have typically been done later in FA like Naanee’s. I had thought Smiley’s contract had expired my apologies.

Siler = 0 snaps

Wasn’t Siler IR’d early and played 0 snaps? That should cancel him out.

by FCBolt82 on Mar 22, 2012 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Deadline for signing?

I thought there was a deadline for signing FAs eligible for compensatory considerations. Siler was signed 7/31. Not sure if that makes the signing eligible or not. If it does, then the Bolts lost 3 and gained 2 thus making them eligible for one compensatory pick, so long as there aren’t 32 teams with greater losses in front of them (which would be rare—hardly ever happens). Naanee signed 8/4, which I’m pretty sure is too late to qualify. Finally, if Siler doesn’t count, I think ct17 is right about the net value pick. By the way ct17, nice research here. Haven’t seen adamjt13 in awhile but this is on par with his stuff—good job

by FCBolt82 on Jan 16, 2012 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

The signing deadline was not clear this year

The deadline terminology changed, had to work from other events. There was no official “End of free agent signing period” on the NFL calendar. It appears that it was Sept. 3, unless it was Aug. 24, but the difference did not affect any of the picks.

10-4

That’s for sure. Course for compensatory picks, it’s always a bit nebulous. That said, iirc the current CBA said nothing would change regarding compensatory picks. If that’s true then they might still work off the old deadlines for compensatory eligible FAs. Like you say though, moving it back would make sense. But if you’re projections are a bit off and you’re looking for reasons why, that’s one place I’d look. I

Great post

I just dont remember how much hartstock signed with the panthers. Was it more then the min? We can use these extra picks. Got a lot of holes to fill and not a lot of cap room

You can only get 4 comp picks

That’s the rules. I believe Hartsock was cut as well, they wanted to save money.

What about Nick Barnett

From the Packers to the Bills. Contract ~$4mil/yr.

According to the compensation table, that would give the Pack a 5th round pick, which would replace one of the 7th rounders.

Barnett was cut by the Packers, does not qualify

Tony Hills left to Denver as a FA also not sure financials

Anthony Madison signed with Detroit not sure financials, 1 year vet min at least though.

Not sure if any of these contracts are worth enough to qualify

There have been players to qualify on near min deals though ct

Brandon McGowan qualified w/ a 765K deal for the Pats in 09. He must have had enough starts that year to perhaps put him in the qualifying category. Legedu had 10 starts, hopefully he signed prior to the cut off. I would think that the bottom of the 7th round would be the most difficult to predict

Packers

With the huge contract that colledge received from the cardinals, wouldn’t the packers get a 3rd round compensatory pick instead?

Not bad ct

the names are good some of the rounds may be off but it’s pretty damn good, I say.

10-yr vets: signing teams & canceling out FA losses

Well done, CT, indeed. In the end, how do you think things worked with Indianapolis and Kerry Collins? They signed Collins (10-year veteran), lost Clint Session and Charlie Johnson, yet got comp picks for both Session and Johnson, correct? Does that might mean that a 10-year veteran FA signing does not cancel out any other FA losses for the signing team? (I agreed with your original thought it might cancel some pick out, but at a maximum 5th round value.) Or, like was posted elsewhere (by you?) on another site, was Collins not canceling anyone out related only to injury-related reasons? I am wondering how things might work out with future 10-yr vet signings, such as the GB Packers signing J.Saturday & how that will effect 2013 comp picks. Thanks for your thoughts!

Indy

In the past some injured players counted, some did not. AdamJT13 could not explain the discrepancies. The league does not say anything. Collins may have received one because it affected a high pick, and therefore would have been a big loss to Indy for a guy that did not play. No idea if it relates to the 10-year vet rule.

The bigger question is why Session was a lower round than Stephen Bowen, who got less money. Perhaps it was due to playing time, as Session did not play 16 games. But knocking him back a round is a big reduction. And Charlie Johnson played a full season, yet the comp pick for him is lower than several others in that round who made less money.

I saw your comment over on AdamJT13's site

He listed the signing date as the reason. Because they changed the league year terminologies in the shortened league year, I spent hours staring at the screen trying to figure out what rules applied. The new dates and labels were specific to last year. This year the timeframes should be more clear.

Thanks for the reply!

That was me at AdamJT13’s site. I also saw your comment at bloggingthebeast. Good point about Session here, esp. when, according to AdamJT13, Collins didn’t factor in at all b/c of his signing date. Very interesting and curious. Also, with Collins not factoring in, it appears that this year gave us no more indication about if a 10-year veteran FA signing (before June 1st) cancels out any FA losses for the signing team at the signed value, at a maximum 5th round value (if the value is greater than the 5th round), or not at all, correct?

by dirko on Mar 28, 2012 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, that was a question I was hoping to have answered

Whether the salary or adjusted 5th round basis cancels out other picks. Looks so far that we will not find out this year either. No 10-yr players getting good money. This year I got smart, I’m keeping track of signings now.
