Boston College's Luke Kuechly enters 2012 NFL Draft field

The first round of the 2012 NFL Draft just got another player. Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly decided to forgo his senior season to enter the draft

Following Manti Te'o's return to Notre Dame, Kuechly is unquestionably the best inside linebacker in the draft. At a news conference where he announced his intentions, Kuechly wouldn't reveal where the NFL Draft advisory committee projected him.

Kuechly was far and away the nation's leading tackler this season with 191 stops. That's almost 16 a game.He had 23 alone in the third game of the season against Duke. As a junior, Kuechly won both the Lott IMPACT Trophy, and the Butkus, Nagurski and Lombardi awards.

To say Kuechly's instincts are NFL-ready is an understatement. He is the kind of player who will get drafted and plugged into the starting lineup in his first game.

Kuechly is always near the football because he takes good angles and knows where the play is going to develop. He is a textbook perfect tackler and rarely misses. While Kuechly may not have optimum athleticism, he's been good enough when asked to drop in pass coverage.

Not sure what I think of Kuechly

His stats were inflated because BC had a garbage defensive line which allowed RBs to get to the second level with ease

The guys a beast…He also had great stats when they had a good D-line.

by hoyaeagle on Jan 6, 2012 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

That makes no sense

The guy made every single play, if the play was to the middle, to the left, to the right, a pass, a run, you name it. Anyone that actually watched him play wouldn’t make a ludicrous statement like that. He’s got the instincts of a Zach Thomas, but has more size.

So

Kuechly is overrated because every time the RB got to the second level he made a tackle? Maybe I’m naive, but isn’t one of the things a good LB is supposed to do?

You have no idea what you're talking about

We’ll pass on him for a d-lineman that will bust….again….

I have to think Kuechly has ESP or some other psychic talent

There is no other way to explain how he is always in the right place. Even when he does not make the tackle, he is in the way. He diagnoses WR screens so fast that he gets out there to make plays.

I watched two games this year, Central Florida being one of them, where an OL was assigned virtually every play to proceed directly to the second level to block Kuechly. The entire offensive game plan was built around blocking him. And he still made tons of tackles.

I don't know

I like Kuechly a lot. I wonder if his stock is a bit like Posluszny, Laurinaitis, and Maualuga. All three were first round types in December-January but their stock fell due to the position they play and lack of elite athletic ability.

I wonder if he he drops as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if some fortunate team drafts him at the top of the second round.

No way he gets past 15

Given the average quality of this draft class, I’d find a hard time targeting 32 or more players who will get picked before Kuechly.

OK

I could see that. I’m just not as sure about Kuechly in the first round as most of the other players tagged to go there.

If he got drafted around 15, I wouldn’t be surprised. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he dropped into the second. The history says it could happen.

Best linebacker in the draft

Meaning the Giants won’t get him, meaning a bunch of pissed off Giants fans. Idk why, but that’s the way it usually shakes out lol.

I don't know if he can play SAM at the next level. He's 238 right now, so hopefully he gains some weight.

Right now, I see him as a MIKE only, and I don’t know if we need that with Goff/Herzlich/Jones

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

We really don't need a Mike

You’re right, between Goff and Herz, we’ll be fine for a while. Idk about Jones, I will give him the benefit of the doubt due to him being thrown into a starting role without any training camps or what not. I just think Herz will be the better player. We only need a SAM if Osi gets traded/cut and they move Kiwi back to DE, which I wouldn’t be totally opposed to.

I think he was the SAM, or at least an OLB when Herz was there last year.

he’s kind of like Zach Brown, he’s played every LBaneezer spot there is. And 6"3 238 is pretty damn good size.

I forgot that he played SAM two years ago. My mistake.

238 is decent…I’d prefer an extra 10 lbs or so, but that’s nitpicking.

An option for KC in the first?

I’m pegging them for O-line at the moment, but they could certainly stand to upgrade the spot next to Derrick Johnson (currently Jovan Belcher). Belcher has done an admirable job for an UDFA, but he’s nothing special.

What’s the general scouting report on Kuechly (strengths, weaknesses)? Best scheme? Ability to take on and shed blockers? Thanks!

As a BC fan, it's nice to see people with a very good sense of who he is as a player

He’s gained a lot of weight since he arrived on campus. In fact, he was recruited as a safety and was supposed to redshirt his freshman year in order to gain weight to switch to LB. But then Herzlich got diagnosed and another linebacker tore his ACL so he got thrown into the mix and obviously flourished. I have no doubt he’ll continue bulking up and will have more than adequate size.

Also, though he doesn’t have “elite” athleticism, he certainly doesn’t have below average athleticism and I don’t see any kind of oddly low 40 time to submarine his status a la Brandon Spikes. And as has been said, his instincts and vision are just terrifying. Put him on your team and get ready to spend the next few years chuckling to yourself over how he manages to be everywhere all the time.

OT: You're a BC Fan? I didn't know you guys were real. Awesome!

Love Kuechly in the first round by the way, regardless of athleticism. Reminds me a little of Lofa Tatupu circa ’05,
