2012 Mock Draft (3 Rounds) Version 3.0

As I looked over feedback from the quick 1-rounder I posted Friday, I decided it was better to rework the first round for my next installment of a 3 round mock.

A few notable FA signings:

- Matt Flynn to Miami

- Stevie Johnson remains in Buffalo

- Dwayne Bowe franchised by Kansas City

- Marques Colston to the Jags(I think Gene Smith is going to throw enough money Colston’s way that he is going to leave NO)

- Desean Jackson to Washington(call me crazy, but I feel like whatever is said publicly about Snyder’s involvement is irrelevant as he is going to push all the buttons to get a guy like Desean Jackson onto his team’s roster)

- Cortland Finnegan to St. Louis

- Vincent Jackson remains in San Diego

- Manningham to Indianapolis(Indy is going to need to bring in at least one good WR for Luck and I have a gut feeling Manningham might be that guy- and neither his last name resembling Peyton’s nor his big game in Indy have anything to do with this)

TRADES:

- Seattle trades #12, #43, and a 2012 first rounder to St. Louis for #2:Seattle makes a gutsy move up for RG III

- Philadelphia trades #14 and #46 to Jacksonville for #7: I know all of you people out there are going to bash me for me making a trade down for my Jags and netting picks, but the truth of the matter is that I feel that with Desean leaving, and with 2 2nd rounders, Philly might be tempted to move up for the #1 WR when he falls to the Jaguars, a team that could very well take him

- Denver trades #25 and #89 to Chicago for #19: JD Walton is seemingly not the long term answer at C, and Denver sees an opportunity to move up 6 spots and snag the top C in the draft, prior to Tennessee who could very well take Konz if he makes it to #20

- Washington trades #39 and #103 to New England for #31: Washington moves up into the bottom of the first round to get a guy who they believe can become their franchise QB

Colts

The only way Manningham comes to Indy is if the price is right. Manningham is ok, but far from a number one. Honestly, the best bet Indy has at receiver is to resign Garcon and then draft someone who they can groom in their system. After all, receivers rarely do better when they change systems.

As far as the draft, there is no way the Colts draft Gilmore over Minnifield. Gilmore is too erratic and too often goes for the big play rather than the sure thing. That’s not the kind of corner that Indy needs. Minnifield has the bloodlines and the talent to be a good corner while Gilmore is probably going to flame out.

I’d love to get Thompson in the third. I think he’d fit very well in Pagano’s scheme as a nose tackle (he has the same measurables as Josh Chapman) when they’re in the 3-4 and a 1-tech while in the 4-3.

by TrueBlue87 on Feb 12, 2012 3:54 PM EST reply actions

I think Indy is far more likely to retain Wayne or Garçon than to bring in a free agent.

My thoughts for Chapman over Thompson, though, is that Thompson is like Nevis

And isn’t predominantly your typical NT/1-tech type DT. I’m sure the Colts would try to convert him, but essentially he reads like a pass rusher. Chapman reads like a guy that will bench press a double team and clog running lanes. The Colts have had so many poor run stoppers and so many pass rushers that I’d want Chapman just because he fills a need. I’m just tired of our LBs providing 80% of the run stopping capabilities.

I just don’t buy Thompson as a pass rusher because he’s much better at stopping the run than rushing the passer. His career at Clemson and in the Senior Bowl showed he is much better at taking on double teams and stopping the run.

I realize that it's fun to talk about Snyder spending big for free agents

but he really isn’t involved in football operations anymore. Think what you want, but as a lifelong ‘skins fan, I am 100% certain that you’re wrong.

Other than that, this isn’t a bad draft for the Redskins. I like it, and it’s both reasonable and realistic.

by CarverM on Feb 12, 2012 4:18 PM EST reply actions

Agreed.

It is a decent draft for the Skins. The trade back might be unnecessary unless they are worried about Cleveland taking Tannehill. Most of the QB needy teams between NE and WAS had their QB’s taken care of in either free agency or the draft in this scenario. I don’t see them signing Jackson, he’ll demand to much money.

Also,

NE will only trade the 31st away if they get a 2013 1st rounder along with either a 2nd or 3rd in 2012.

Texans.

Solid draft. I think 3rd round might be BPA or OL. Antonio Allen was involved in a fight off field, so character concerns might set off a flag that the texans don’t like. But Allen played OLB on some downs, so I’m sure that Wade would love his blitzing ability.

Not a horrible pick at all

But safety is not a need for the Texans right now. We have a solid starter in Quin and a top 10 talent at the position with Daniel Manning. Our secondary depth is pretty strong as well, as Demps and Nolan played well in their time. I would say just slide Senio Kelemete up to us in that spot. Nice draft!

by messjunk on Feb 12, 2012 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty high on Mercilus

He’d be a stud rusher on the opposite side of Dunlap. Jenkins – meh. Lamar Miller in the second round is a steal. And IIoka? I’d rather that they stayed away from this years safety class altogether. I realize he had a nice Senior Bowl, but he’s a reach in the third. Plus, they’ve already got a 6’4 safety that they are developing in Sands.

I agree.
Unless we take Perry or Mercilus, I would prefer for us to trade down and pick up a different player. I don’t like the idea of going WR here, but I do have to admit that the prospects of Jeffery. However, I still think we go pass rusher.

it is a vlaue selection

plus, last I checked Bart Scott is already like 31 and I do not think he will produce at a high level much longer. There are also good options for rush LB in the later rounds, like Massaquoi who I have you guys getting in the 3rd.

This is exactly why I don’t have a problem with it. There’s also been talk of them moving Scott. Plus, the addition of Kuechly would allow for a smooth tranistion to a 43 front, should we decide to go that route. We can put Luke in the middle and put Harris on the strong side.

Maybe in later rounds,

But still, this team has to many needs that will hinder us until they’re fixed. Besides, Josh Mauga has been very promising.

Seahawks

A move up for RG3 would be lauded by 90% of the Seahawks fanbase (myself included) but I don’t think the FO would blow that much draft capital at once. A pass-rusher in the 3rd definitely addresses the other main need.

by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Feb 12, 2012 5:09 PM EST reply actions

agree

Griffin is my favorite college player and would love nothing more than for him to wind up in a Seahawk uniform, but a) I don’t see the Rams giving us #2 pick and making division rival better and b) JS and PC move the other way, I don’t think they moved up at all in previous 2 drafts, only back… look for them to continue that and get more picks.

by tarryhawk on Feb 12, 2012 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but who’s to say that someone wants to trade with the Rams? It will not be Cleveland (The WCO needs a couple of years to get worked into place), nor do I see anyone else moving up that far for that price. RGIII will drop to #4 Cleveland, and thats where it gets interesting, I do not see cleveland drafting him other than a draft and trade for either Washington, Seattle, KC, or Dallas. This is the spot where he gets traded and not for all the crazy amount of picks that have been thrown around. I do believe it will end up being the Redskins, and the Browns will either draft Blackmon or trade out again, very similar to what you proposed – but more likely with all the Philly ties in Cleveland.

I like the first two picks for the Steelers (although I woudl take Jeffery in the 1st)

but no CB in the 3rd. The Steelers have way to much young talent at CB to pick one in the top 3 rounds. A better pick would have been Senio Kelemente

Pats

Love the Fletcher Cox and 2-WR picks. Pats often draft for offense in pairs. TE in 2010, RBs and Ts in 2011..

Don’t like the Washington trade. If Pats trade back, they trade back into the 1st round of 2013 with either a 2nd or 3rd round 2012 pick. I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that pick, including for Dwayne Allen, so the Pats are likely to get a good deal. Giants and Colts pick after them and both teams are in need of a young TE to groom.

It is what it is

by Middlesex on Feb 12, 2012 5:18 PM EST reply actions

you are so certain they will trade one of their first rounders

but neither pick is likely to net them a first rounder next year.

The trade last year with New Orleans was

the 28th overall 2011 pick in exchange for their 2nd rounder(mid-late) and their 2012 1st rounder. The Saints acquired the player widely considered the best running back in the draft. In 2012, the 31st pick is an ideal spot to grab the best TE in the draft.

There are a lot of teams who think they’re one major-upgrade away from a run at the championship. I’m sure at least one or two will be interested in the pick.

It is what it is

by Middlesex on Feb 12, 2012 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

Further;

It’s probably more important to BB to trade that pick back into 2013 than to get 2nd or 3rd rounders.

I don’t see it.

Also, there is no way Dwight Jones is still there at #33. Fail.

As for the DT situation it was a matter of taking the best player there that fills a position of need.

Kelemete got measured at the Senior Bowl

6-3 300, arms under 33 in. He’s not playing tackle in the NFL, much less for the Giants. With his left tackle experience, I suppose he would be a good pass blocker at left guard. But he’s small for what we normally prefer.

I was in the guard camp until I looked at our finances. I can’t imagine using an early pick there now, though, unless it really helps the run game, and that is not Kelemete.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

Cowboys ideal picks from this mock.

Round 1 – Melvin Ingram – I just prefer him to Brockers
Round 2 – Mark Barron – We would sprint to the podium with this pick. We love injury-discounted players and need a safety in the worst way
Round 3 – Kendall Reye – We could go guard there but I would rather just carpetbomb our defense and add real players at every level of the defense

..they will not pass on janoris jenkins in the first

On my last mock a Cowboys fan tells me Cowboys won’t pass on Brockers if he is there. Please decide amongst the fanbase who will and won’t be passed on.

Jaguars

I like the trade back, but I’d take Sanu or Konz in the second, but likely Sanu. Curry is a great pick in the second. I like Osemele, but I think Lamar Miller has tremendous value. In the third I’d stick with Josh Norman and I hope Egnew was around in the fourth.

The following draft would have me very happy.
1) Mohammed Sanu
2) Vinny Curry
2) Lamar Miller
3) Josh Norman
4) Michael Egnew

1)Ingram >> Sanu and Konz
2)Needing a WR, I went with the top guy I had available in the second. I REALLY like Curry but he just did not make a ton of sense(unless Mincey is not brought back and no major FA is brought in)
3)Lamar Miller does not present better value for the Jaguars than Osemele, who is a massive o-lineman who can play G or even perhaps be a RT at the next level.

Ravens

Love the picks. Excellent picks which fit needs as well. Would be thrilled with this draft.

Vikings

1st. Kalil. Awesome

2nd. I like Worthy and we need a NT, but Zach Brown is BPA. I would take Brown or Minnifield (if the knee checks out) over Worthy here.

3rd. Not a fan of Hill this early, or any WR really. If I went Brown in 2 then I probably would take a CB here, Casey Hayward for example. If I went with Minnifield in the 2nd then I would probably look at LB, NT or Safety in the 3rd, Bradham, Reyes or Iloka, respectively.

"At this point, what we got to lose, right? So we might as well throw caution to the wind and hit people in the face."

Jags

I like the trade back. I like Ingram, Criner, and Norman but I’m not really sold on Osemele, It would be a good pick if he can play RT but from what I have heard, he will have to move inside to be effective in the league.
