Great effort on the 6 rounder. Overall, a decent mock for the Giants. We aren't going to take 2 OL in the first 3 rounds.

I think you need to update your needs. Ours are (in no particular order)

OLB (We have Blackburn, Goff, Herzlich, Jones all vying for MLB, we need a SAM), CB, RT, OC, TE, FS, RB, WR

That being said, we could use an upgrade almost everywhere, and BPA wins out.

So my re-mock would be:

1) Cordy Glenn, RT
2) David Wilson, RB
3) Chandler Jones, DE
4) Keenan Robinson, OLB
5) Ladarius Green, TE

Gimme Fletcher Cox, Osemele or Allen

over Cordy Glenn any day.

I prefer Bradham over Tank Carder or Keenan Robinson. I LOVE Chandler Jones.

I think A.J. Jenkins is perfect for the Giants.

by GiantNomad on Feb 12, 2012 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

I can understand Allen

Osemele I have ranked lower than Glenn, and is a guard only. Doesn’t have the same footwork as Glenn though both have great arm length. Cox…ehh, I don’t want another DT, especially in the first.

Bradham has better instincts and technique, I think Robinson’s athleticism (not that Bradham isn’t athletic, Keenan is better) would speak to the Giants more.

AJ Jenkins would work in the later rounds too.

I just don't think that Robinson has the size we want out of a SAM

Though I do like him, I just fear that he’s more of a WILL (which we’re kind of overloaded on).

I personally think that Osemele is more athletic than Glenn. I feel like Glenn has a lot of problems technique-wise, and people ignore those because they are enamored with his strength.

I get that, but Cox is one of those freak athletes (looks pretty tightly wound for a 300 pounder), and you know how JR feels about those guys.

by GiantNomad on Feb 12, 2012 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

Robinson has the frame to fill out to be a good SAM.

Though I have no problem with Bradham, I like him too.

Osemele is definitely more athletic than Glenn, but he’s got his fair share of technique issues. Glenn has excellent footwork, and is actually pretty fast shuffling. Also, he’s a better pass protector than people give him credit for. He’s a bit upright, but its coachable. I like Glenn’s combo of size/strength/footwork. I think its a great combination.

As far as Cox goes…well, wouldn’t be the first time JR went really athletic DL. Though if I were mocking for the Giants, we have Austin, Joseph, and Canty…Bernard may or may not come back, but considering how much we put our DE’s in the DT rotation, don’t think we go more than 3 deep at starter quality DT. If you have Cox as that much value, than I could justify it a bit more….I have him as an early 30 on my board, so it wasn’t value enough for me to justify that pick.

Hmm

Just looked it up, everything I see says Bradham is the same size as Robinson. Guess I was wrong…that or we’ll have to wait for the weigh in.

I like them both a lot, and you have the right idea. The Giants need a SAM.

I'm not sure you can ever need a SAM

In a 4-3 defense, that’s the 11th most important position. It’s a spare parts bin position. You take someone if there is good value, but don’t get too concerned over it.

LBs in college are getting smaller, so you cannot be choosy. There is maybe 1-2 good SAM candidates every draft. Robinson is not that big but only Audie Cole is really bigger, and he plays physical, not afraid to take on blockers.

We have gotten nowhere with converting small pass rushers to SAMs.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

I think Austin is potentially a really good player,

but I hate that so many of us Giants fans are expecting him to make an impact. The fact of the matter is the man has been out of football for 2 years now. Factor in the possibility of another stupid season-ending injury to somebody in the rotation and it seems thinner.

by GiantNomad on Feb 12, 2012 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

that's true. We can't get too ahead of ourselves...but the way I see it is

if they aren’t convinced that he can become a good rotational DT for us this year…we re-sign Rocky. We were fine with Bernard, Canty, and Linval.

In terms of needs though I like them, but I'd prioritize them this way

1) TE
2) OG/RT (Giants aren’t going to give up on Baas just yet)
3) FS
4) SAM
5) CB
6) RB
7) WR

You guys have two pretty good TEs. I know they both just got injured

but I would think a late round TE that can start until they return would be better than a early round TE that will have to be there a long time because of the money invested in them

Neither TE we have is an impact maker. Allen could be that. He's a better blocking Brandon Pettigrew.

I have no problem with the raw athleticism and measurables that Green gives us though.

I know a lot of Giants fans will disagree with me,

but I’m crushing hard on Coby Fleener. Everybody talks about how skinny he is etc. According to what he’s currently listed at, he’s the exact same height/weight as Kevin Boss was coming out. He’ll probably run a slightly faster 40 and definitely has more agility.

And guess what, the knock on Boss coming out is that he wasn’t an excellent blocker. I like Dwayne Allen, I just like Fleener more.

by GiantNomad on Feb 13, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'll disagree with you of course :P

I hate his frame. Allen looks almost like a fatty, but he’s got surprising speed. Also is a much better route runner. If Allen is gone though, I don’t mind taking Fleener.

I actually completely disagree with that.

Ballard is alright, but the reality of the matter is, he doesn’t offer much. He’s slow in and out of his breaks and isn’t as good of a blocker as advertised. Beyond that, ACL injuries really take an extra year after getting back to the field, to come back from (unless you’re Wes Welker).

Pascoe is good where he was, a third string tight end. Beckum…well Beckum barely had a place in the Giants offense BEFORE his injury.

Tight End is easily the most critical need on this team.

by GiantNomad on Feb 12, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Plus

Ballard is starting the season on the PUP. Beckum will probably get an injury settlement and that will be that.

I think Eagles Fans will agree with me in saying drafting Travis Beckum and Cornelius Ingram didn’t work out for either of our franchises.

WR is way too low on the needs list

3rd WR has to be one of the highest priorities on the team. And there’s no way we’re putting Barden or Jernigan down as a more secure replacement than Boothe. I’d even rank Herzlich at SAM and Brewer at RT as safer plays than Barden replacing Manningham. Reese puts a lot of value on WRs, that’s why we draft one every year.

Rolle should be playing safety, leaving us with a nickel CB need. The missing story from Welker’s famous drop was Rolle late to line up, then standing still as Welker ran past.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

Let's see him catch the ball when it hits his hands first

The other problem is that Cruz plays so well as the slot guy.

Hixon has to be done. He’s just too tall and skinny to take hits. Although if he can come back and run, he was always a decent WR. But no more return game. No special teams.

Safety is a very low need, not worth a first round pick

Danieal Manning & Glover Quin are the starters. We may need depth behind them, but we aren’t trying to replace them. If the board falls like that on draft day, the Texans would be quick to trade out of that pick, probably for the Patriots two 2nd round picks (because I’m sure after their performance this year, they’d badly want three 1st round defensive picks, plus not to mention the #48 & #63 picks for #26 is very fair deal)

Hgh five on adjusting GB's needs.

I still don’t like Martin in the 3rd ( I just don’t see that being worth it; GB chooses not to run the ball) but that’s a lot better than him in the 2nd like you had last time. Other than that, nice job.

Although I don’t know about the TE pick. The only way I see GB picking one is if J-Mike isn’t franchised/re-signed, and if that is the case hen I see them targeting one much earlier. We have plenty of depth TEs. Heck, we have 5 on the roster. But Finley is the only dynamic threat. If he leaves, we need a new starter. Not a late round flier who could provide depth.

But I have seen something like that mentioned in my skimming. I haven’t read the big Finley thread yet. Maybe I’ll do that and come back armed with more information. A lot of people at APC have the same opinion as me regarding Finley trying to get WR money.

Also, it appears the Pack haven’t begun contract talks with him yet as of 2/4. Not sure what that means, and neither is Brandon.

Also, Quarless is really hurt and we may not be able to count on him next year. So it really does look like J-Mike or early TE.

Panthers

hit and miss. love the Kirk and Iloka picks, the rest could be better. We wont take a kicker, Mare has too much guaranteed money to cut, we could be looking for a punter though. We also wont take a late WR, we have a ton of those already, if we take a WR at all (which is doubtful) it will be early. I dont hate the Thompson pick, but i dont like it. I just dont see anything special in him, we already have a ton of young mediocre DTs. If we take a DT (which is also doubtful) it would probably be a high potential reward player (maybe Poe).

49ers needs

Pretty good draft for 49ers although with the depth at WR and G in this draft I think they might go for a rush OLB earlier. I think the needs for the 49ers before free agency are

Priority 1: RG, WR, Rush OLB – They have some average depth on o-line with drafting of Kilgore and Person last year, so I think they’ll be looking for an exceptional player if they take an RG at all. You took Zeitler in round 3 which is good enough. I think they might go OLB in round 2 or even 1.

Priority 2: FS, SS, CB, another WR – Assuming they resign Goldson and Carlos Rogers, then they’re pretty good with their starters but could use depth at all three DB positions. Probably looking at best player available for any of those three spots in later rounds. They need to replace 2nd string Reggie Smith (FS), and Madieu Williams (SS), and everyone can always use another high upside CB.

Priority 3: NT, DE, RB – The DL is set and they have depth behind them with Ian Williams, Dobbs, and Tukuafu. I don’t see them taking and NT/DE early unless it is an exceptional player, despite that fact that Justin Smith is aging. More likely to go for developmental guy like Trevor Guyton. Pretty good at RB too, but they could use someone to push Anthony Dixon or if they think they have a high upside guy they can get late and be the eventual successor to Gore.

They decidedly do not need a QB. They’re completely happy with Smith. They moved up to get Kaep, and they like Tolzien as a clipboard guy.

Needs should be WR, RG, Rush OLB, FS, CB, SS, RB, NT, DE

If Pats go for Vinny Curry at 31, why not instead go for Nick Perry at 27?

I don’t see why the Pats would double-up at OLB in the first 2 rounds, especially if they’re passing on Nick Perry.

Not likely Seahawks pass on Upshaw

Carroll loves him and he is exactly what they are looking for off the edge.

No way Tannehill lasts to Rd. 2.

I don’t see Pead being on their radar either. He’s in the same mold as Washington and Forsett, not the inside runner the Hawks are seeking to compliment Lynch.

So I guess that means I don’t like your Seahawks picks. Right positions of need, wrong players.

PS: you guys all keep mocking Osweiler in the 4th round. I’ll say it again: he’s a first rounder by the time teams evaluate him fully.

Except for Foles. Part of it is that I don’t see Foles as a starter in the NFL, but a QB in the 2nd round wouldn’t really do anything for the Chiefs. The team is pretty high on Stanzi (even if I do believe his ceiling is limited), and the team can re-sign Orton, we’ll have a solid back-up no matter who the starter is.

Jags

1) Coples is an interesting pick. Not opposed to it, but as I have mentioned before on this site, if Jonathan Martin or Riley Rieff is available at 7, I think it is MUCH more likely that Gene Smith takes one of them as they seem to be safer picks and seem to be along the lines of what Gene Smith prefers in his draft picks. Not saying Coples can’t or won’t be the pick, but my gut says Martin or Rieff if possible.

2) As much as I like Norman as a player, I am not thinking he is early second round material. If Coples were to be the pick, I would be much more in favor of selecting Kelechi Osemele, and if Rieff/Martin were to be the pick, I think that Dwayne Allen or Juron Criner or Dwight Jones would be much better options.

3) Brandon Boykin, Cam Johnson, or Marvin McNutt please. Randle disappeared against the good defense he faced (Alabama) and that has me worried about him when he starts playing in the NFL.

4) I like the Leonard Johnson pick. If a CB has not been taken, I am all for the pick. However, I envision a CB having been taken by now, so I think Joe Adams would be a dynamite selection for the Jaguars.

5) Not a fan of the pick. I thing Michael Egnew is a great pick in the 5th round, reuniting Blaine Gabbert with his college security blanket. Could really help out Gabbert put behind the awful rookie year he had and improve. Marvin Jones, Sean Spence, Nigel Bradham are also real solid options in my opinion.

6) Not sure you will be selling me on the whole drafting a punter thing. Sure, they are important and all, but drafting one higher than the 7th round, unless they are Andy Lee or Shane Lechler is overdrafting I feel. I think going Quentin Saulsberry or Duke Ihenacho makes more sense at the pick.

Good mock! Thank for sharing with us. IMHO!
Team needs: WR1, CB, DE, WR2, LB, OG/C very young DT and safety, so if anything, it will be with FA. QB they already have 4. One will go. Won’t waste a draft pick again fter ding so in 2010 and 2011. Our new GM is from the Chiefs, so whichever player they franchise, Bowe (WR) or Carr (CB), we could take the other.
First 3 picks are great position wise, don’t recognise all the players, but I think the second 3ed rounder will be an OG which is a higher requirement due to Garzas and Spencer’s age.
4th round will be a LB who can also participate on specials teams.

Colts

That is a really good mock for Indy. Personally I’m not too sure about Wagner since linebacker isn’t really the most pressing need even with the switch to the 3-4. Since it’ll be a Ravens 3-4/4-3 hybrid, one linebacker will be a dedicated rusher. I’d imagine Indy will look long and hard at Josh Chapman in the third, who can provide a nose when in 3-4 and a 1-tech run stuffer in the 4-3. I’d be happy with either Miller or Edwards in the fourth. White is ok in the fifth, but I’d personally favor Broyles, who is more polished and should have an easier time establishing a relationship with Luck. McKenzie in the sixth is a steal.

Who exactly is playing QB for the Redskins next year in this scenario?

Are you assuming we sign Manning or Flynn? I would also assume that we resign London Fletcher, which makes ILB Burfict a bit of a luxury pick in the 2nd round, especially with Tannehill on the board. Tannehill seems to have been laboratory built to run Shanny’s offense, and even with (Manning/Flynn/some other FA) in the fold, I could see Shanny drafting Tannehill if he’s there at our 2nd round pick to be groomed for the future.

I do like the value you found us later in the draft, though. While he has some injury concerns, I think Datko would be a tremendous find in the 5th round.

McIntosh lost his starting job midway through last year

to Perry Riley, who we drafted in the 4th round of the 2010 draft out of LSU. He actually played quite well, too.

by CarverM on Feb 13, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

McIntosh is also a free agent

Perry Riley played very well last year, and should continue to get better alongside London.

Exactly

I was wondering about this too. If Tannehill is still on the board in the 2nd Round, then Shanny’s going to draft him. ILB can be addressed later in the draft.

great effort again at a 6 round mock

but i can’t say i like the jets picks . no way the position we double dip at will be OG . we could double dip at safety , olb or wr .
i do like the rest of the draft

this 49ers mock is much better than the last...

Why are the Jets in yours drafting 2 OGs?

Waste of time with both rather try and get a second S or a WR before a second OG.

And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!

Jags

1) Coples- Good pick

2) Norman- Good Pick

3) Randle- the pick is alright but with Mcnutt and Dwight Jones on the board, I think I would go in their direction.

4) Johnson- a good pick in the 4th but with Matt Reynolds and Joe Adams on the board, I would have to go with them.

5) DeChristopher- ? I would go with Marvin Jones or even Sean Spence in that spot.

6) Anger, Good pick.

Overall, Great Mock

One of the best mock drafts I’ve seen from a fan site. Especially coming from a Steelers fan, Ravens have good soild picks. I’d more like Aaron Henry in the 3rd. But overall, well done!

This is a dream mock for the Browns

Cowboys fan here

Using your mock draft as a template, I went ahead and redrafted all 6 Cowboys picks by taking players who were taken after each Cowboys pick in your mock draft.

Here’s what I ended up with:
1) Trent Richardson
2) Dontari Poe
3) Leonard Johnson
4) Johnathan Massaquoi-apparently he went undrafted in your mock despite being ranked 61st overall according to CBS.
5) Cliff Harris
6) Quentin Saulsberry

"The tone is business," Garrett said. "Let's get to work. The Giants are going to be at the Meadowlands on Sunday at 4:15. They're an awfully good football team. We have to get ready for them."

Seattle

I liked this mock. Not the Seahawks picks, but everything else. The Seahawks front office would cream their jeans if the board fell this well for them.

Based on the mock you did, here are my picks followed by what I think the Seahawks Front office would actually pick.

Me:

1) RB Trent Richardson

2) QB Ryan Tannehill

3) DT Derek Wolfe

4) CB Cliff Harris

6) DE Donte Paige-Moss

~

Them:

1) LB/DE Courtney Upshaw

2) RB Doug Martin

3) LB Sean Spence

4) DE Chandler Jones

6) QB Russell Wilson

Kip

I don’t get why it is now urban legend that Carroll is gushing over Upshaw. It was a 2nd hand rumor that originated with a guy who claimed Carroll made a comment during a pick-up basketball game.

I think the one thing we can say for certain, is Schneider will be trying to trade down, probably more than once, to gain additional draft picks. They’ll have 6-7 depending on whether they get any compensatory picks, and I’m sure they’d like 9. The best opportunity will be trading down from 11/12, If Richardson is still on the board, he may be a guy another team will be willing to trade up for, and provided the re-sign Lynch, I’d bet they trade down vs. selecting Richardson.

The pickup basketball game may or may not have been true

But Seattle IS interested in Upshaw, at least that what my inside source told me. In fairness, I was not told the exact order of Seattle’s big board, but I know that Upshaw is on the top 5 somewhere.

I Can’t comment on trading down. That’s one thing we’ll have to wait and see on. Trading down makes a lot of sense from my vantage point but they may very well disagree. It sounds like there are a couple guys they rate very highly, and if one of those guys is there at #11/#12 they will just take him, the same way they did for Earl Thomas in 2010.

Also, it seems pretty unlikely Seattle will get much in the way of comp picks. They had a very active free agency period last year. All the more reason to trade down. I hope they do, but unlike last year it does not feel like a forgone conclusion.

I was reading your article on the Seahawks Draft Blog and when I read that you were doing your picks with the available players, I immediately started to do that myself. Fun stuff!

Anyway, I was really surprised when I saw that I thought of the same players as you.

Given the parameters, I believed that Seattle would go:

1) LB/DE Courtney Upshaw

2) RB Doug Martin (I wouldn’t mind David Wilson here instead)

3) WR Dwight Jones

4) DE Chandler Jones

6) QB Russell Wilson

I think that’s it almost a foregone conclusion that Seattle will trade down with one of their first two picks – maybe multiple trade downs. In this scenario, I could see them trading down with their 2nd rounder.

diehard82: Upshaw fits the scheme and he has the talent at a major position of need for Seattle.

I like Jones a lot

I’d probably take him over Wolfe now that I think about it.

I wouldn’t change my prediction for Seattle’s pick though. The Seahawks are pretty serious about adding “speed” to linebacker. That might come through free agency or trade, but if it doesn’t I’m predicting it could very well be a round 2-4 priority. Sean Spence fits the bill pretty well and Seattle would be very lucky to get a LB like him in the 3rd. I’d rather have Jones than Spence personally, but I think Seattle would struggle to pass on a good speedy LB.
