Mocking the Draft Live Draft Update #3

Hey guys. Just wanted to give you all one last update on the Live Draft taking place on Friday and Saturday. First thing to note is that all the spots are filled. Good job by you all to get your BPA's in and fill all the spots. It will make for a much smoother draft. Now onto some semantics.

  • This is supposed to be as realistic as possible. If your team has 4 RBs on their roster signed long term and they are all decent, don't pick an RB. If your team has said they won't pick a player, don't pick him. It is as simple as that. Try and follow your teams drafting style (BPA/Need) to the best of your abilities.
  • The Draft will start at 7PM sharp on Friday night and 2:30 sharp on Saturday afternoon. These are both Eastern times.
  • In the last thread I originally said future (2013) picks will count as half of their 2012 value but upon further research, they typically count for one round lower. For example, if the Seahawks traded their 2013 first round pick, it would be equivalent to the 2012 12th pick in the draft.

Use this thread to let people know if you are interested in moving up/down and all that fun stuff.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

Why the 12th pick

shouldn’t it be the 16th pick

by Steve_Chiefs on Feb 13, 2012 7:25 PM EST reply actions

What?

The Seahawks have the 12th pick of the 1st round so then the 2013 1st round pick is equal to one round lower than that or the 12th pick of the 2nd round

I just meant on average

The Colts would have a huge advantage trading down and getting 1 st overall pick 2nd round value when who knows where they would draft in 2013. So I thought is was the value of the 16th pick of the next round down :)

Would make it easier tokeep track of if

a 2013 1st is worth 420 points
2nd is worth 190

or even

a future 1st is worth 1000 and a 2nd is worth 420 in trade

Vikings are looking to trade down if RG3 is there

But the Vikings also will probably take him themselves despite the perceived belief that Ponder is the answer. Right now there is no guarantee. He could be good or he could be another Matt Leinart. So then what do the Vikings do? When is the next time they will be picking 3rd in the draft.

The Vikings could also take Trent Richardson at #3 too. AP is not guaranteed to come back 100% and may never get back to 100%. Gerhart is OK but even he had a meniscus issue at the end of the year. Beyond them the Vikings have Jordan Todman and Caleb King both of whom have not done anything yet.

No offense, but I would find it very difficult to understand how someone could say the Vikings are set at RB or QB. The only position group that they are set at is DE. So I would probably pass on Quinton Coples unless I could trade Jared Allen to someone (which I cannot). Got to free cap space and he will waste two years and use up lots of cap space while the Vikings are rebuilding.

This is going to be a BPA draft for the Vikings most likely. Any and all positions could be drafted at any point.

I want to move down from #11. (Seahawks)

If you want to move up to take a shot at Trent Richardson, or someone else…… I’ll deal the 11th for your 17th (first of two first-rounders) and the #53 overall in the 2nd round. It’s a difference of 70 points on the draft value chart. I would consider the 21st pick instead, but you would need to throw in a 5th rounder as well to make it work.

Let me know!

They very well could.

Maybe Fisher doesn’t think Bradford is all that great, or maybe he’ll just take him and hold him hostage for a trade. Remember, he doesn’t have to win right away like Spags would have had to. He has at least three years to turn this team around, and that’s a gamble he could take, and I gamble I will take unless I get a good offer.

Wolf. Wolfgang Wolf

by dbcouver on Feb 14, 2012 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

If you believe that teams are not talking to the Vikings about the #3 pick in the real draft then I do not know what to say.

If I am a GM, I am going to ask the Vikings if they would deal that #3 pick if RG3 is there. Most GMs know that in the real draft that there is no freaking way the Rams will take RG3. No chance in hell.

You can try and come up with some far fetched scenario but if they did take him the majority of fans would be pissed off and you know it.

As for publicly telling teams that the Vikings are willing to deal, well, Spielman is already doing that in real life.

Spielman said in an interview on the NFL Network set. "We’re the third overall pick, so we’ll be looking at all the options. If someone wants to come up and get our pick, we’re going to be more than willing to listen."

So since this draft should represent reality, as the Vikings GM, I am doing the same thing.

If that is called taking the “gloves” off then so be it. I think that it is very reasonable. Perhaps the Rams GM may have to take less in order to trade down in this mock?

by MarkSP18 on Feb 14, 2012 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

Spielman isn't saying anything new. It means nothing. Who was waiting to hear Spielman say that in order to visit the possibility of trading with the Vikes?

Realistically this year is different than most in that we don’t need the guy who presents the most value. If we are told we can’t draft and trade him we’re at a disadvantage here that does not apply to the real world. Those are facts. The only way the Vikes can guarantee that RGIII is available when their pick comes up is by knowing we’d have to keep him if we picked him.

I don’t know what to say to you if you can grasp this.

I know you have to have rules and that the restrictions apply to all evenly, but....

You have to understand how this specific restriction hurts one team, ie Rams, more than any other. Our stock in the draft this year lies with the tradeability of that first pick. That tradeability may very realistically have to be protected in the real draft by taking the player of value, RGIII, and then marketing him. This restriction in my opinion needs to be reviewed.

I thought about it and decided you are right

making this rule would have put the Rams at a HUGE disadvantage. So, here is the new rule

You can draft a player and trade him for other players/picks in that draft ONCE in this live draft. So the Rams could draft RGIII, then trade him to lets say for example the Browns later in the draft for the #4 Pick (lets say Blackmon) and the #22 pick (lets say its Zach Brown). You get to do that ONCE.

This way, the Vikings can’t hold the Rams hostage and force a trade.

That is fair.

But in reality the Rams will not do that. I will bet you any amount of money you want. They cannot risk other teams saying no thanks and then be stuck with RG3. If they do that then they need a new GM immediately.

So be my guest and take RG3 and hope someone does trade for him later.

The Vikings are very very happy to take Matt Kalil which could be in the intention anyway.

by MarkSP18 on Feb 14, 2012 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

I am just trying to keep it real and also have some fun

But maybe my version of reality is whacked?

It’s all good. The Rams can do whatever they want. I kind of like it now because the Vikings have other options. They can draft Trent Richardson and try and trade him later.

The difference between the Vikings and Rams doing this is that the Vikings can actually use both players. If they could not move either player they would be OK because Ponder is not a guarantee to be good and AP may never get back to his old self.

For the Rams it is a huge risk to draft RG3 without having a deal with another team in place already.

by MarkSP18 on Feb 15, 2012 6:13 AM EST up reply actions

It is.

The vikes can’t use RG3. Again, they are ahead of Cleveland so that’s why teams would want to trade with them. Seriously, when has a team picked a QB in the top10 and then drafted a QB the following year with a top 3 pick?

by Brocolis154033 on Feb 15, 2012 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Probably never

But that doesn’t apply to the Vikings anyway. Ponder was drafted #12.

Well...

I’m not willing to trade up for RG3, so if the Rams or Vikes take him then they’ll have to find someone else to trade him to…

by Brocolis154033 on Feb 15, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

but...

That pick has its highest value before the player is taken. The value of the pick is based on the fact that cleveland would take rg3 at 4. So if no team is willing to trade before your pick is up then the value goes down because you can’t start the season with rg3 and bradford on the same roster. The same logic applies to the vikes at 3.

by Brocolis154033 on Feb 16, 2012 9:32 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I do not know why you believe the Vikings cannot take RG3 themselves

Ponder is not a guarantee. He did some good things and bad things as all rookies do. He also got hurt again unfortunately which has to be a concern for the Vikings. They want him to be able to start all 16 games more often than not.

RG3 is a better QB prospect coming out of college too. He may not be any good in the NFL and can be a bust too.

But right now the Vikings do not know what they have in Ponder or Webb. If they truly believe that RG3 is that good then they should not pass on him because you never know when will be the next time you can get a shot at drafting a QB like RG3.

If RG3 is the BPA for the Vikings then they should take him and then see what happens. They can always trade someone. Teams are always willing to give up picks for QBs.

by MarkSP18 on Feb 16, 2012 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

I guess...

You can justify drafting RG3 to yourself all you want. Teams don’t draft a QB 12th overall to just turn around and draft one 3rd the next year. Also, Ponder hasn’t even played a full season, so they aren’t taking RG3 unless they have a deal in place to trade him period.

OK. If you say so.

Here is what Spielman is saying today which should be obvious …

http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/139488693.html

“I know we’re very confident in Christian, but if one of those quarterbacks is too good to pass up, you also have to weight that in, too,” Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman said. “But we’re very, very confident in what Christian Ponder brings. As we go through this process and our coaches come into this process and we put this thing together in April, I don’t know where we’ll be.”

The salary committed to Ponder is minimal. If RG3 blows them out the water then they have to seriously consider upgrading that position. One of them can be traded.

Mike Shanahan was on NFL Network during the Senior Bowl practice for the North and he said that unless you have a top 5 or 6 QB in the league then you have to always be looking. He said the worst case is you trade someone.

That is exactly right. Ponder is a good guy and tough as hell but if the Vikings think RG3 is much better then they should go for it. It has been years and years of the Vikings searching for a top QB. Now they can have two of the top QBs to come out in the last two years. Not a bad position to be in IMO.

The Vikings drafted Peterson when they already had Chester Taylor who did very well in 2006. But they took the BPA and it worked out very well.

The Vikings should take the BPA no matter what. If that is Trent Richardson then they should take him too. Drafting for need is risky.

Again, the Vikings do not have a top 5 or 6 QB right now. They have two young guys who may or may not pan out.

Hey guy

There is a small possibility (like 15%) that I won’t be available for at least part of the Friday portion of the draft. If that happens, who, if any of you will be able to run the draft. I will give you the ability to update the Big Board, and all that fun stuff and will let you know how to do it. I just need to have somebody in place in case I won’t be here for part of it
