Mohamed Sanu Player Profile

LOUISVILLE, KY - OCTOBER 21: Mohamed Sanu #6 of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights catches a touchdown pass during the game against the Louisville Cardinals at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on October 21, 2011 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 215

First Word: Did you really think I would start my player profiles with anyone but Sanu? Really? Well, Sanu is one of the top WR targets in the draft and has the size, speed, route running, and hands to become an elite WR in the NFL. He has broken numerous records in just three years at Rutgers, while never having a good QB.

Star-divide

Player Bio: Sanu came into his Junior season as a highly touted player. However, nobody could have expected him to break the Big East single season receptions record. Without a viable starting QB, he put up 115 receptions for 1206 yards and 7TDs. Some will view the low yards per catch as a weakness and knock him for his lack of top end speed, but in reality, that is totally not true. Due to Rutgers awful QB play, they had to have Sanu run short four to six yard patters to keep him involved. In Sanu’s freshman and sophomore years, he was used as a RB in the Wild Knight formation as well. Over the two years he ran 121 times for 655 yards and 9TDs so he is clearly versatile.

Notable Achievements: Sanu holds the all time Big East Single Season Receptions record with 115 in one season. He won the offensive MVP and Homer Hazel award for Rutgers in 2011. The Homer Hazel award is given to the team voted MVP. Sanu finished fifth in the nation in receptions in 2011. There was only one game in 2011 where he had less than five receptions and there was 6 games where he went over 10. When he faced Ohio, he set a Big East record for receptions in a game, finishing with 16. In his Junior Year, he was an All America selection.

Projected Draft Status: First Round

  • Sanu’s incredible season has inserted himself firmly into the first round of the draft. His stock ranges from 13 to 32 but he is widely considered a first round prospect. Any doubts about his speed will be answered at the Draft Combine when he runs in the 4.4′s.

Other Possible Early WR Picks: Justin Blackmon, Alshon Jeffery, Kendall Wright, Tommy Streeter, Nick Toon

Career Stats:

  • Freshman: 51 Receptions, 639 Yards, 3TDs, 62 rushes, 346 yards, 5TDs
  • Sophomore: 44 Receptions, 418 Yards, 2TDs, 59 Rushes, 309 Yards, 4TDs
  • Junior: 115 Receptions, 1206 Yards, 7TDs, 4 Rushes, -2 Yards, 0TDs
  • Total: 210 Receptions, 2263 Yards, 12TDs, 125 Rushes, 653 Yards, 9TDs

Video Highlights:

Sanu’s Strengths (in buzzwords):

  • Size
  • Good in jump-ball situations
  • Quick burst in short area
  • Quality Route Runner
  • Strong upper body allows him to easily fight through jams
  • Powerful legs
  • Great body control
  • Outstanding hands
  • Capable and good blocker
  • Team first player
  • Fearless when going over the middle
  • Can play out wide or in the slot
  • Experience in a Wildcat

Sanu’s Weaknesses (in buzzwords):

  • Lacks straight line speed (this is not true and will be proven at the combine but for now it is being listed as a weakness)
  • Will be a 23 year old rookie

Final Thoughts:

  • Sanu is, in my opinion, the second or third best WR in a very good draft class. He has all the tools to be a great WR in the NFL and excels in every important aspect of the game. Throw in his exceptional blocking skills (he is the best blocking WR in the draft) and the fact that he produced so much in college despite always being double and triple teams and having no QB and he looks like as good of a prospect at WR as their is in this draft. Add in a great attitude and a great work ethic and his stock gets even higher. Teams I could see targeting him are the Cardinals at 13, the Eagles at 15, the Jets at 16, the Bears at 19, the Titans at 20 (pair the two best Rutgers WRs of all time), the Steelers at 24, the Broncos at 25, the Texans at 26, The Patriots at 27/31, the Ravens at 29, the 49ers at 30, and the Giants at 32. Basically, any team in the latter half of the first round with some need at WR will target him because of his great work ethic and skills.

I bet he goes to the Texans but wouldnt mind seeing him in Eagles green if we traded back into the first round to get him

by Mr.electric10 on Feb 14, 2012 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Yep. Texans sounds like a very likely landing spot

But the Kevin Colbert and the Steelers will likely try and move out of the 24 spot (either up or down) so that woudl give a team with some ammo in the 2nd/3rd rounds a chance to jump up and grab him before the Texans get a chance at him

Im sure if the Eagles selected him he'd play.

You’re gonna tell me he wouldn’t want to get to play with Mike Vick, him being an “Elite” QB aside it can’t be argued the respect Mike has from fellow Football players and more often then not they would want to be on the same team.

by EagleEyes on Feb 14, 2012 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

no, he'd play. but he would hold out for a while.

and vick is far from “Elite” one season means nothing, especially when you dont repeat it the next year

Who's to say..

He most certainly has an impact on the game to the level of the “Elite”, his problem is consistency not production. Eli lead the NFL in picks two years ago, things change. We just have to realize if we are going to go with this Vick Experience we have to get him players for his style (Big WR’s and TE’s).

by EagleEyes on Feb 15, 2012 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

well...

vick is very old, eli is in his prime and almost %70 of his picks were off the hands of his obnoxious recieving core. (brees is near the top in INTs every year BTW)
Vick doesnt have the time to change.
and he is now just a pocket passer since every time he tries to run it ends up in him getting hurt. So the question is, van he be as good of a pocket passer as he was 2 years ago?
and i dont think so.
deffinitley not with the pass rush in the nfc east, all 3 of his opponents have premiere pass rushers.
the eagles need to fully commit to the run game, and let lesean win and lose games for them, get a good FB.
and upgrade the oline that you guys like to think was the best of all time.
if they can have the O revolve around mccoy and have vick-maclin on the play action, the eagles may very well get that wild card spot next year…
i pre-draft see the division finishing this way
2. Redskins
3. eagles
4 cowboys
if the skins dont get the QB i think they will. then the eagles and skins will switch spots

ya that Vick is very old bit is funny
vick is very old, eli is in his prime and almost %70 of his picks were off the hands of his obnoxious recieving core.

This vary thing happened to Vick this year and no one is giving him that benefit of tipped balls (see first Giants game when S.Smith tipped the ball))

van he be as good of a pocket passer as he was 2 years ago?

Again there is more to worry about him being healthy then him being able to make plays (he throws one of the better passes in the NFL) so if he plays a 16 game season next year I would say he would be a lock for the Pro-Bowl and at some point he would have been an MVP canidate.
deffinitley not with the pass rush in the nfc east, all 3 of his opponents have premiere pass rushers.

Well you guys might be losing Osi and Tuck is “Very Old” in your terms so that leaves JPP. The Cowboys have Ware and the Redskins have Orakpo and Kerrigan so I’d say we could have the best pass rush next season.

the eagles may very well get that wild card spot next year…

I know you guys are still punch drunk from winning but there was two other teams that were one win away from being in the playoffs so I doubt the Giants repeat. Your schedule next year will be brutal plus teams will play you every week to “gauge” where they are against the prior NFL champs so I thin you guys will finish just above the Skins in 3rd place with the Cowboys 2 and us winning the NFCEast.

by EagleEyes on Feb 15, 2012 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

This vary thing happened to Vick this year and no one is giving him that benefit of tipped balls (see first Giants game when S.Smith tipped the ball))

I watched a lot of the eagles games this year.
and a lot of other games, and it happens, it tips off recievers hands.
but in no way was vicks or anyones near to as close as eli’s was when he threw 25 picks, e shoulda only thrown 10 maybe 15 that year. vick, most of his picks were on him, not all. but much more than when eli threw 25.

Well you guys might be losing Osi

too much depth their for him to make a huge difference.

and Tuck is "Very Old" in your terms

lol, u know what i meant when i said vick was very old. for a running QB, he is very old. wont be able to play to his strengths. tuck is still very good, maybe the best DE in the league right now.

so that leaves JPP

also Kiwi (if u dont include tuck) which is much more than anyone in the league
.
The Cowboys have Ware

which is much more than most in the league
and the Redskins have Orakpo and Kerrigan

youre acting like that isnt a lot. the skins have a great D.
so I’d say we could have the best pass rush next season.

2 things
i wasnt comparing pass rushes (the giants have the best and will have the best 4 years to come). i was just saying that vick will be facing a lot of great pass rushes 2 times a year next year, which will not help his injury factor.

and i like cole and all. but babin isnt anything special imo. he just doesnt play like an elite pass rusher, idc about the #s (and i said that when he was in tenn. to)
so unless you add someone in the draft (their really isnt much) your not gonna have the best pass rush in the game.

I know you guys are still punch drunk from winning but there was two other teams that were one win away from being in the playoffs so I doubt the Giants repeat. Your schedule next year will be brutal plus teams will play you every week to "gauge" where they are against the prior NFL champs so I thin you guys will finish just above the Skins in 3rd place with the Cowboys 2 and us winning the NFCEast.

well sure, you’re an eagles fan. you should think that.
but im not treatened by the eagles at all. i think you guys will fight with washington, atlanta, detroit/GB, TB, and a few other teams for the wild card spot.
if you dont remember, i’ll remind you just how many injuries the giants had.
but fist we’ll use the packers as example, last year they won the SB with a lot of injuries on their team, this year they almost repeated and had a 15-1 record.
this year the giants won the superbowl with many more injuries, including their #2 CB, their #4 CB, Their KR, osi (out for idk how many games) their Returner, bradshaw, numerous lineman, their very promising 1st round pick, their 2nd round pick, etc.
now next year we’re getting just about all those guys back. and most of the injuries were earlier in the season, so they will be at full strength for the start of the year.
just think about that. all the weaknesses we had last year, were not gonna have to go to the FA market to fill them (well most).
Tuck will be healthy (he wasnt all year till the playoffs) JPP will have another year under his bealt, Kiwi will move back to DE if Osi gets traded, if Osi stays he may be healthy enough to play atleast 13 games. Thomas is coming back, amukamara will be able to play without a broken foot, Bradshaw will have time for that cracked bone to heal, etc.
now you add that with the Elite play of manning and nicks, and thats one of the top 3-5 offenses in the league.
the dline plays as usual, our DBs all come back as healthy and thats one of the best Ds in the league.
the eagles dont have a top defense or offense (this isnt meant to spark you or anything)
their QB is questionable.
if Djax doesnt come back, whats to stop teams from double teaming maclin and celik? if Djax does comeback will he be a distraction again?
their dline besides cole isnt tip top, the LB core is much worse than ours and thats saying alot, Who will take over for asante? will Nnamdi bounce back (i think he will play much better. but not like his oakland years). can DRC be as good as i thought he would. the only thing your set at is HB and WR if Djax comes back or you get a couple guys in FA/Draft…

Absolutely

Being a Rutgers fan, I have seen him play for three years.

Also, remember, Rutgers early draft picks in the past couple years have had great success. Just look at the list

Kenny Britt – was emerging as one of the best WRs in the NFL this year before his injury
Devin McCourty – has been an explosive corner for New England and will only get better
Ray Rice – The most versatile RB in the league and one of the top 5 backs in the NFL

rice is better. he has much better hands than Foster and rice is a very talented blocker

my top HBs would be
1.ap
2. Ray Ray
3. Mjd
4. Foster
5. Mccoy

Have to see how AP comes back

I guess I can’t slight your list too bad I mean at least you realize McCoy. The thing is McCoy is getting better too where MJD and Foster may be at their peak so McCoy can be one of/the best for quite awhile longer.

by EagleEyes on Feb 15, 2012 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

agree with that.

Mccoy and rice are gonna be the premire backs in this league in a few years.
but for going into next year, i cant take him over MJD or Foster
AP, well yea. we’ll have to see what he does, but he has an amazing work ethic, and the best thing about him is not only was he a great speed back, but great power back 2. so he coudl deffinitley still be the big Dog.

rice imo is obviously the #2 guy.
theirs no one in the league that runs, catches, and blocks as well as he does.
rice has near elite speed, elite elusivness and agility, amazing hands, great power runner and superb blocker when flacco drops into the shotgun.

MJD and foster are obvious, just great runners

and well mcccoy
u know about him

Youre insane in the membrane

Foster has WAY better hands than Ray Rice and is better at running the rock too. Foster lines up as a WR a lot in the Texans offense because he has some of the best hands on the team. the order is definitely as follows:
1.Adrian Peterson (healthy)
1a. Arian Foster
2. Ray Rice
3. MJD
3a. L McCoy

Rectum!? Damn near killed 'em!!!

okay, if thats how you wanna play it. i will let my giants fandom take over for me to.

top 5 WR
1 Andre johnson
1A hakeem nicks.

now i know that hakeem isnt as good as johnson, but you seem to not understand that foster isnt as good as peterson or rice.
their both top 5 players at their position.
and i like foster, but rice has the best hands out of any HB in the League, your fandom of foster will block out whatever i say so should i even bother saying it?
i will, Ray rice like foster also doesnt fumble often. but rice is a better runner, he is more elusive faster and more powerful (foster is all good aswell, im not saying he isnt) but he doesnt block well like rice, and while foster has good hands, they arent better than ray’s.

Foster carved up the Baltimore defense, whereas Rice was stifled against the Texans defense

Foster didn’t lose that game for the Texans, & Rice didn’t win that game for the Ravens. T.J. Yates’ 3 INTs & Jacoby Jones’ blunder on the punt return cost them that game

The Eagles will reportedly Franchise Desean so the need for a WR is stirctly a RedZone need. Maybe a WR in the 2nd but I see a later round selection (3-5) and/or a Veteran presence, lets say a Plaxico type.

Would like to see him in Chicago navy and orange. Kid has a very bright future. Good write up. Don’t see how his speed is being questioned. He looks fast in highlights I’ve seen of him running the wildcat.

by Acreman20 on Feb 14, 2012 5:56 PM EST via Android app reply actions

I was disappointed in this write up

It lacked objectivity. Sanu is a good player, but I have a hard time believing that after the combine, when he runs the predicted blistering speed, his only remaining weakness will be age.

To the staff, why would you have a self proclaimed fan of a player write up his “scouting” report?

by Harvey Manfrengenson on Feb 14, 2012 6:08 PM EST reply actions

High 4.4's is not blistering, just faster than what he is projected (4.5 to 4.6)

Where was I not objective in this post? Those weaknesses and strengths were taken from a website. I just added them. The only two weaknesses they listed were lack of elite speed, and age. He really is that good

draftdatabase.wordpress.com

by seton hall and steelers on Feb 14, 2012 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

im gonna have to call BS on that one

if he really was THAT good that his age is his only weakness he would be a top 10 pick. hes not going to be because he played against weak competition is a solid athlete but nothing special has good hands but not phenomenal and isnt really fluid as a top prospect would be. hes good but he will have problems on the next level in getting seperation because he doesnt have great on field speed. he might run a 4.49 but on the field he isnt that fast. i view him in the same mold as marvin mcnutt and dwight jones big average speed receivers, but of course sanu is the best out of that group but that doesnt mean he is a home run prospect like you make him out to be

IMO next time put equal weight into the negatives and positives or dont proclaim he is your favorite player because the rest of the article then just screams BIAS. we all have our favorite players(mine is criner) but every player has flaws even in the nfl

And who is it you write for that makes you the expert?

Also, I’m sure you have never made a typo before?….ever?

i would assume

That he is getting paid for this considering he is a new writer. Him getting paid thus raises the standard beyond the levels of typos and fan boy gloating about his favorite player. If you’re going to get payed, your work should be better than most and this isn’t. Now if he isn’t getting paid as the new writer I’m wrong and will shut up but if he is I stand by what I said.

You say fan boy gloating yet you didn't point out

Any weaknesses that he didn’t list.

Also, you bring up a good question. Do SB Nation writers get paid? I’ve been wondering that for a while.

i did in the comments above

and they do. a couple months back they were asking for applications to a paid position. i dont know for a fact seton hall filled it so im not going to act like i know for a fact but i think its safe to assume considering hes a new writer that he got paid for this piece

If you spent so much time watching him play

why did you have to lift (plagiarize) words from another’s review? You are a self proclaimed Rutgers fan who has watched him for 3 years, which first of all destroys any claim you have of objectivity, and second, makes me wonder why you would use other people’s reviews to form your opinions.

I could tell you were a fan of his before I ever came across it in the comments, your article was so over the top glowing with praise.

the man has speed.

not say like desean jackson or Hester speed.
but think of somewhere between cruz or welker type speed.
sanu has game speed, he’s much faster in a game than his 40 would ever say.
kinda like hakeem nicks maybe. sanu can very well be a HR hitter, especially with a talented QB and good system.

He's never really thrilled me

Seems like a jack of all trades type of kid when I watched him. I’d favor him as a really good #2 in the NFL

Not a worthy first rounder

WRs tend to fall in the draft cause of inconsistencies as rookies. His lack of production (besides last season) should worry GMs. I’d much rather have Wright or Floyd based on production and playing against superior competition.

Lack of production?

50 recs and 640 yards as a Freshman is pretty good and that’s not to mention his rushing yards. The drop in production his sophomore year was due to the fact his season was cut short by injury if I’m not mistaken.

Also, how did Floyd play against superior competition?

ND’s schedule is consistently on par with those of teams in the weaker BCS conferences (Big East, ACC)

I really like this guy

To me he is physically every bit as good as Michael Floyd. Throw in his work ethic and team first attitude and I’d take him over Floyd.

Another thing Seton & Steelers

You missed his main weakness. That he isn’t a flashy highlight real type receiver. He make a living catching jump balls with 3 defenders draped all over him Megatron style that make the ESPN top 10 list and therefore isn’t a #1 receiver. (sarcasm)

I agree with you, the guy doesn’t have many weaknesses per say. He has everything you look for in a receiver at the next level- great hands, route running, burst and physicality. The problem is that too many fans gave come to associate height and jump ball ability with a WR’s ability to be a #1 receiver at the next level. They don’t realize that guys like Hines Ward, Hakeem Nicks, Santonio Holmes, Reggie Wayne etc. who make their living with great route running, intelligence and soft hands can also be #1 receivers in the NFL even though they aren’t 6’4" jump ball catching, highlight real players.
