2012 NFL Scouting Combine: Who needs a good showing

More than 300 prospects for the 2012 NFL Draft are preparing for the biggest job interview of their lives set to take place next week in Indianapolis at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine.

While the combine is not going to drastically affect most prospects, the drills and interviews could stand to benefit a number of prospects looking to improve their draft stock. It's one of the last chances for a player to prove himself in front of NFL scouts before the draft.

Some players have a lot more to prove than others. After the jump, we'll take a look at who has the most to prove in Indianapolis.

Star-divide

Speed Concerns

1. Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina - No players has been more heavily criticized throughout the pre-draft process than Alshon Jeffery. Many question his ability to separate from defenders in the secondary. He put on some weight last season at South Carolina, and he is going to have to prove that he has decent speed at the very least. Jeffery is a big time playmaker, but scouts are going to want him to run in the 4.5 range.

2. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State - Another receiver who has had his deep speed called into question is Justin Blackmon. The Oklahoma State wideout destroyed secondaries largely due to his ability to shed tackles after making a catch. In the NFL breaking tackles becomes difficult, so a strong 40 time would do wonders to solidify Blackmon as a top-ten prospect.

Character Concerns

3. Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama - The interview portion of the NFL Scouting Combine is crucial for Dre Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick was arrested in January for marijuana possession only to have the charges dropped a few weeks ago. Teams are going to grill the talented corner to find out what type of kid he is and whether or not he can be trusted with a first round paycheck. There are few people out there questioning this kid's ability on the field, but the off the field concerns need to be addressed.

4. Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama - Two drug related arrests got Janoris Jenkins kicked off the Florida Gators football team. A year later, Jenkins has done wonders to resurrect his draft stock, but his work is far from over. While everyone who has spoken to him seems to think he has learned from his mistakes, Jenkins will have to convince 32 NFL teams that next week.

Weigh-In/Strength Concerns

5. Matt Kalil, OT, USC - It may seem strange that one of the top prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft has something to prove at the combine, but Kalil will have the attention of scouts at the weigh-in. Kalil is currently listed at under 300 pounds, which is not terrible, but I'm sure scouts would like to see him add some bulk while maintaining the quick feet and flexibility that have made him a top-five lock.

6. Andrew Datko, OT, Florida State - Andrew Datko has the size to be an NFL left tackle, questions about his strength, particularly in his lower body, have been raised. The former Seminole will get a chance to show how hard he has been training to improve that aspect of his game.

I'd add Luke Kuechly and Zach Brown to the list.

They both don’t “need” a good showing, but Kuechly can allay any concerns about his athletic ability and solidify his stance as a top 15 pick. Brown is a consensus fringe 1st round prospect, but if he dominates the combine, he could position himself to be a surefire 1st round player and make some money as well.

With Zach Brown...

everyone knows he can run jump etc…. it is the instinctive aspect of playing Linebacker that most question. Can he be johnny on the spot like a really good 4-3 scheme backer needs to be>? Or is he a 3rd down backer for coverage and running with people in space?.. just seems like it is his instincts as a linebacker that most question because we already know he is a freak athlete.

Breaking Tackles

2. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State – Another receiver who has had his deep speed called into question is Justin Blackmon. The Oklahoma State wideout destroyed secondaries largely due to his ability to shed tackles after making a catch. In the NFL breaking tackles becomes difficult, so a strong 40 time would do wonders to solidify Blackmon as a top-ten prospect.

Everything becomes more difficult in the NFL, but his tackling breaking ability will still lead to him making a lot of big plays. There are plenty of CBs in the NFL will poor tackling ability.

So what’s Blackmon need to run to become a top 5 pick? I think if he runs 4.55 or below he’ll go top 5.

Very excited for the combine.

Man I hope Jeffrey runs a 4.6 it makes him drop to 29 so Baltimore can get him.

He ain’t getting past Baltimore you ring kisser! And what the hell do you need Jeffrey for, you guys already got the best duo in the league.

Don’t make Eli turn into one of the best ever now. God forbid the “Awe Shucks Assassin” keeps playing well and proves everyone wrong.

hahaha. We lose Manningham. Got to get the Giants offense into the NO/GB stratosphere.

Though I got to say, Jeffrey would be perfect for Flacco. A tall, physical WR that can go up and grab the ball is the perfect complement to a burner like Smith and a possession YAC guy like Boldin

Exactly why I want him! You guys are already in that stratosphere, people just need to get over the fact that Eli looks like Eeyore.

The fact that Eli doesn't look like an "elite" QB is our secret weapon.

Skip Baseless goes so far to calling him the “rain man”

That’s exactly why I like Eli. He is everything I think Flacco will turn out to be.

What recently came out is that Eli became a different QB when Jeremy Shockey busted up his leg

in 2007 before the playoffs. Shockey would bully Manning around in the huddle and practice. With him gone, it was easier for Eli to develop as a leader. I think part of Flacco’s problem is that there’s a lot of pressure (justifiably so, they want a ring) from the defense. Do you think that’s at least partially true?

No, not at all. This team is not split like that. Joe has carried the defense in their struggles, much so as the defense has carried Joe in his struggles.

I think Joe handles whatever pressure is out there perfectly fine. If anything, it is pressure on him to shut up the idiots who view him as a below average QB or in the same class as guys like Sanchez, Cassel etc and say that QB’s such as Ryan, Romo, Bradford, etc are light years better than him.

He has all the intangibles, but winning SB’s is not as easy as some of these dumbass “analysts” or “fans” make it out to be.

Makes sense. I was just going based on those Ed Reed remarks. I figured they were overblown

but they kept on getting rehashed, so I figured I’d ask lol

I remember that dynamic playing out

in 2007 between Shockey and Manning. I remember thinking only briefly about how they were better off without Shockey. Before we knew it they were champs and Shockey was in New Orleans. I think Shockey was the fly in the ointment, huh? I see now just how important it was to get his ass out of the huddle.

I agree the Ravens dynamic isn’t the same way. First of all Lewis, Reed, et al aren’t in the huddle, though they would still put pressure on Flacco. I don’t think it would be negative pressure though, like Shockeys.

This is easily the most important for Alshon

since it means first round or not, closely followed by the character guys (though they will be gone by late 1st round regardless). Really in that sense the combine means a lot for Kendall Wright and Sanu too. If they do well and the other WRs stink it up, then those guys may go earlier than anticipated.

Nick Toon

and Kendall Wright need good 40 times as well. Wright needs something in the high 4.3’s low 4.4’s,and Toon needs to run sub 4.6

Hey are we gonna have a 40 yard dash time and runner pool?

I have to defend my 37th place finish.
