steel.curtain 2 Round Mock

Finally got a 2 Round Mock done. I sprinkled in a few trades but this is more conservative than my last. Enjoy

Star-divide

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck QB, Stanford

Pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point.

TRADE: St. Louis Rams trade #2 pick to Washington for their 1st, 2nd and conditional 2013 2nd round pick.

2. Washington Redskins (from Rams): Robert Griffin III QB, Baylor

This is one of the more predictable trades I can remember as Washington moves up to get RG3. The 2013 pick will become a 1st round pick if RG3 leads them to the playoffs.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil OT, USC

The Vikings couldn't be happier to see someone trade up for RG3 because then it means they get Kalil. He fills a big need and will protect Christian Ponder for the next 10 years.

4. Cleveland Browns: Justin Blackmon WR, Oklahoma State

I'm going on the record now, the worst thing the Browns could possibly do is to trade up for Robert Griffin. He will just be another talented young QB with no weapons to work with that will FAIL MISERABLY. Taking an elite receiver like Blackmon will actually give whoever their QB is a chance.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne CB, LSU

Tampa is in a good situation here since its unlikely any defensive players are taken in the top 4. Claiborne fills the biggest need for the Bucs and is the top talent available who's not Trent Richardson.

6. St. Louis Rams (from Redskins): Riley Reiff OT, Iowa

Missing out on Justin Blackmon, the Rams still need to put talent around Sam Bradford.

TRADE: Jacksonville trades #7 pick to Cincinnati for 1st and 2013 1st (both from Raiders).

7. Cincinnati Bengals (from Jaguars): Trent Richardson RB, Alabama

The Bengals essentially trade Carson Palmer for Trent Richardson. No brainer if you ask me.

8. Miami Dolphins: Quinton Coples DE, UNC

Switching to a 4-3, Miami needs someone opposite Cameron Wake, who is 30 anyway. Coples is a better run defender than pass rusher, but he will be in a great situation because he won't be the most feared pass rusher on the team, meaning more opportunities for him to get 1-on-1 blocking.

9. Carolina Panthers: Michael Brockers DT, LSU

Carolina considered taking Marcel Dareus at #1 last year, but they won't pass on Brockers at 9 this time. They couldn't stop anyone running the ball in 2011.

10. Buffalo Bills: Melvin Ingram DE, South Carolina

The Bills will also be switching back to a 4-3, and they desperately need edge rushers. Kyle Williams and Dareus are great on the inside, but with no threat off the edge they'll be useless. Ingram has a chance to be a great pass rusher.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: Courtney Upshaw OLB, Alabama

Kansas City could go in a number of directions here, but adding a pass rusher to play opposite Tamba Hali has to be appealing. This defense will be scary for quite some time with Upshaw.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Devon Still DT, Penn State

Seattle needs a QB and are frontrunners for Peyton Manning in my mind, so they'll use the draft to upgrade their front 7 on defense. Devon Still could be a great addition to this defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Jonathan Martin OT, Stanford

Martin has been slipping recently, and Arizona couldn't be happier. Their OTs have been so terrible for years that it doesn't matter who is under center, they won't succeed. They would be foolish to give up on Kevin Kolb that quickly.

14. Dallas Cowboys: Dre Kirkpatrick CB, Alabama

This is a toss up between Kirkpatrick and DeCastro, but I've heard they will go after Carl Nicks in free agency, making Kirkpatrick the pick. With elite size (6'2") for a corner, Dre could immediately replace Terrance Newman.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly ILB, Boston College

No brainer pick if Kuechly is here.

16. New York Jets: Mark Barron S, Alabama

The Jets really need an elite pass rusher so they don't have to blitz every play, but Barron is much better than any OLB on the board. He should be able to match up well against New England's Tight Ends.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Bengals via Raiders): Michael Floyd WR, Notre Dame

Jacksonville makes a great trade moving back and getting better value for Floyd. This offseason has to be all about putting weapons around Blaine Gabbert.

18. San Diego Chargers: David DeCastro G, Stanford

San Diego would probably be better focusing on defense this offseason, but they simply can't pass on DeCastro. Definitely best player on the board and fills a need.

19. Chicago Bears: Alshon Jeffery WR, South Carolina

Chicago has said that upgrading their receivers is priority #1 this offseason (after resigning Matt Forte). They definitely have speed at receiver with Johnny Knox and Devin Hester, but they need a go-to guy with some size. Enter Alshon Jeffery.

20. Tennessee Titans: Peter Konz C, Wisconsin

The Titans really need some talent on their interior offensive line. It will come down to preference between Konz or Cordy Glenn but a top-tier center for Jake Locker to develop a rapport with will be huge.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Cordy Glenn G/T, Georgia

The Bengals address their biggest needs with their first two picks, getting a rare talent RB and a mauler Guard for him to run behind. Glenn is an absolute beast at 6'5" and almost 350 lbs.

22. Cleveland Browns (via Falcons): Ryan Tannehill QB, Texas A&M

Mike Holmgren made it clear he would bring in competition for Colt McCoy. Big mistake if you ask me, as he'd be better off putting talent around McCoy and truly getting a sense of what he can do. Still, Tannehill makes sense at the end of the first.

23. Detroit Lions: Mike Adams OT, Ohio State

Detroit saw what Matt Stafford can do with a full, healthy season. Now its time to ensure he gets as many of those as possible. Adams is huge at 6'7" and 325 lbs, he can protect Stafford's blind side.

TRADE: Pittsburgh trades #24 and 5th round picks to Philadelphia for both 2nd round picks.

24. Philadelphia Eagles: Alfonzo Dennard CB, Nebraska

Asante Samuel is expected to be traded soon to free up cap space, Nnamdi Asomugha is over 30 and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is a free agent in 2013. Dennard is great value here and will provide insurance at the position in case Samuel and DRC aren't with the team in 2013.

25. Denver Broncos: Dwayne Allen TE, Clemson

Denver has good receivers with Decker, Thomas and Royal. They don't have a good TE though and Allen would give Tebow a different but equally valuable target.

26. Houston Texans: Kendall Wright WR, Baylor

Houston learned how ineffective their receivers are without Andre Johnson in the lineup.

27. New England Patriots (via Saints): Whitney Mercilus DE/OLB, Illinois

Belichick has to realize he needs a talent infusion on defense. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the year he finally trades up to get a top talent like Kirkpatrick or Ingram. Mercilus is the best pass rusher available.

28. Green Bay Packers: Andre Branch OLB, Clemson

Green Bay needs someone to rush the QB other than Clay Matthews.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Vontaze Burfict ILB, Arizona State

Its obvious that Baltimore needs to find Ray Lewis's replacement this offseason. Burfict will need to control himself on the field but should turn into a good ILB.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Fletcher Cox DE, Mississippi State

San Fran can take the best player available and never look back at this point. Right now that's Cox, who can provide good depth on the D Line and eventually take over for Justin Smith.

31. New England Patriots: Zach Brown OLB, UNC

Belichick isn't done retooling his defense, not by a long shot...

32. New York Giants: Coby Fleener TE, Stanford

After Jake Ballard's ACL injury in the Super Bowl, the Giants need to find someone who can be ready by the start of camp.

ROUND 2:

33. St. Louis Rams: Mohamed Sanu WR, Rutgers

Bradford needs more talented options to throw to and Sanu is good value here.

34. Indianapolis Colts: Chase Minnifield CB, UVA

After an absolutely terrible year, the Colts learned how vulnerable their secondary is when they're not playing with the lead. Minnifield is a good pick to try to turn that around.

35. Minnesota Vikings: Dontari Poe DT, Memphis

After getting their franchise LT in the first round, the Vikings can spend the rest of the draft restocking their defense. Poe would be a great replacement for Pat Williams

36. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Dont'a Hightower ILB, Alabama

The Bucs need playmakers on defense. With Claiborne and Hightower, the should be headed in the right direction.

37. Cleveland Browns: Lamar Miller RB, Miami

Cleveland is expected to let Peyton Hillis go after a Madden-cursed year. Miller is much more explosive anyway and can add some bite to this muzzled offense.

38. Jacksonville Jaguars: Nick Toon WR, Wisconsin

Yes, Jacksonville's receivers are that bad. Floyd and Toon could probably start right away on this team.

39. St. Louis Rams (from Redskins): Ronnel Lewis OLB, Oklahoma

The Rams could probably double-dip at WR like the Jags did, but it might be a reach right now. Lewis is a great pick to work with James Laurinaitis.

40. Carolina Panthers: Janoris Jenkins CB, North Alabama

If Carolina keeps improving their defense, they should reach .500 as long as Cam Newton improves as well. Jenkins should go much higher than this if he can convince a team that his off field issues are behind him.

41. Buffalo Bills: Rueben Randle WR, LSU

With Stevie Johnson expected to hit free agency, Randle is a good pick to replace him. Even if they do resign Johnson, its a good idea to get a second receiver for Fitzpatrick to work with.

42. Miami Dolphins: Nick Foles QB, Arizona

If Miami is the front-runner to land Peyton Manning, they'll still want a young guy to develop and learn behind him for a few years.

43. Seattle Seahawks: Nick Perry DE, USC

Seattle still needs to upgrade their front 7, specifically their pass rush, if they wan't to compete with San Francisco.

44. Kansas City Chiefs: Kelechi Osemele OG, Iowa State

After passing on DeCastro early in the first, the Chiefs get a great consolation prize in Osemele at 44.

45. Dallas Cowboys: Jerel Worthy DE, Michigan State

Mostly a value pick here, as Worthy has a chance to go in the first round. He'd be great at DE in a 3-4 where he can occupy blockers who would otherwise be worried about Demarcus Ware.

46. Pittsburgh Steelers: Nate Potter OT, Boise State

The Steelers have only 2 guaranteed starters on the O Line next year. Potter has a great chance to develop into a strong LT.

47. New York Jets: Vinny Curry OLB, Marshall

The Jets seriously need an elite pass rusher so they don't have to blitz so much.

48. New England Patriots (from Raiders): Stephon Gilmore CB, South Carolina

New England has missed on a lot of DB picks recently, so they need to get more talent.

49. San Diego Chargers: Markelle Martin S, Oklahoma State

After the failed Bob Sanders experiment, the Chargers need someone to pair with Eric Weddle.

50. Chicago Bears: Zebrie Sanders OT, Florida State

Chicago needs to continue building around Jay Cutler. If Jeffery and Sanders develop to their full potential, Cutler will have everything he needs.

51. Pittsburgh Steelers (from Eagles via Cardinals): Kevin Zeitler G, Wisconsin

Again, Pittsburgh addresses their extreme lack of depth and quality on their O Line.

52. Tennessee Titans: Bruce Irvin DE, West Virginia

Tennessee needs another pass rushing DE to push former 1st round pick Derrick Morgan.

53. Cincinnati Bengals: Dwight Jones WR, UNC

The Bengals' #2 and #3 receivers are free agents, and they weren't very good anyway.

54. Detroit Lions: Michael Brewster OC, Ohio State

Another piece to add to their O Line, Brewster was the top rated OC to start the year but fell behind Konz.

55. Atlanta Falcons: Josh Robinson CB, Central Florida

Dunta Robinson has disappointed after coming over from Houston. Maybe this Robinson will get the job done.

56. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alameda Ta'amu NT, Washington

Casey Hampton is 35, overpaid, and coming off his third ACL surgury. It's time to cut ties with him and add the final piece to a young group of D Linemen.

57. Denver Broncos: David Wilson RB, Virginia Tech

Willis McGahee had a great year but he's 30 now. Wilson will bring an explosive element to the run game to take attention away from Tebow.

58. Houston Texans: Harrison Smith S, Notre Dame

Houston can take the best player available on defense and in this case Smith's upside is hard to pass up on.

59. New Orleans Saints: Brandon Thompson DT, Clemson

With Aubrayo Franklin and Shuan Rodgers as free agents, the Saints need a young replacement. Thompson has fallen considerably after being considered a top 20 pick.

60. Green Bay Packers: Doug Martin RB, Boise State

Green Bay could keep working on their defense, but they couldn't have been happy with the production of James Starks and Ryan Grant. Martin has great upside and is a real threat in the passing game as well.

61. Baltimore Ravens: Ben Jones OC, Georgia

Matt Birk is going to retire, if not this season then definitely next.

62. San Francisco 49ers: Brandon Washington G, Miami

Washington is too good to pass up right now, and would help solidify an offensive line that could be really great.

63. New England Patriots: Juron Criner WR, Arizona

New England will want to give Brady an outside threat to take attention away from Welker and the Tight Ends.

64. New York Giants: Jayron Hosley CB, Virginia Tech

Hosley is a very instinctive CB and is great value at the bottom of the second.

i felt like there werent a lot of options for the jets in the first. the available pass rushers were much lower on my board than Barron

Lions

I like the 2nd rd pick. I’m not sold on Adams as an NFL LT and don’t think he is a 1st rd talent at this moment. That feeling may change after the combine, idk. There are alot of better overall players available after pick 23 with the way this mock goes.

Happier than a pig in shit that I was wrong about Matthew Stafford since 2009!

bengals will more likley get a 2nd next year from the raiders

And its 1st and 2nd I could deal with it. Would rather trade up for decastro, then go corner with 2nd first, then Doug Martin in the second, even if it takes trading up in the second.

by JCompton41 on Feb 15, 2012 12:28 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Yeah, you said it all.

If DeCastro is as good as everybody says he is, he’s the guy I would target, not Richardson. Then, martin in the 2nd (please no Wilson).

Agree

OLB isnt even going to be on the list of needs for KC this offseason.
Houston was a straight stud once he got use to the NFL game. He started setting the edge better than any LOLB on the roster. He also has become a great pass rusher notching 5.5 sacks in the last 6 games. He also had four pass breakups, 56 tackles (46 solo), and a forced fumble.
The depth is good enough to not worry about it anywhere close to early in the draft. Study and Sheff are ok with me as depth. Study would be alright in case of injury to either starter. We havent seen much from Sheff as far as real playing time.

What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!

Bills

I like Randle, I really do, and would have said good job and moved on, but for one thing. There is no way the Bills wiith the defense they had, even after drafting a DE in the first round, would let Nick Perry slide by them in the second.

Yeah Id take Nick Perry or Cerry in the second

and take Kirpatrick in the 1st, he might be BPA and would be nice with Williams

Horrible draft for the Texans

Wright does not fit the Texans system, & they don’t need a safety that early. 1st round they’d take either Sanu or Poe, 2nd they’d take Criner or Brandon Washington

Jaguars

Pumped about the trade. Especially (forgive me Bengals fans) because I think Cinci overachieved this year in a somewhat easy schedule. I think they will be Buc’d back to reality in 2012…Tampa Bay style. That could mean our 2013 pick will be nice.

Michael Floyd is probably awesome, but he would have to give one hell of an interview for our GM to take a chance on his DUI problem. We’re a pretty clean cut bunch.

by CheapSeat on Feb 15, 2012 2:16 PM EST reply actions

my take on this situation.

LOVE the trade. Not sure though why Cincy makes it. There is not all that much of a threat that Trent goes at #8 or #9 or even maybe #10. I feel like Cincy could get by trading less and still getting T-Rich. Lett me reiterate I am not complaining because I would love to see the Jags trade out of #7 unless Claiborne or Kalil is available.

As for Michael Floyd @17, I like it. I think his past DUI is being overemphasized these days. He has apparently shown himself to be a new person. He obviously will still need a good interview, but I am not sure he has ALL that much to prove. In general, I feel like the overall “cleanness” of the Jags roster will positively influence him, and help motivate him to be a good boy. I still might prefer Kendall Wright though given that I envision a bigger WR coming in through FA, so one of these real special speedy field stretchers could be a better option.

As for Toon in the 2nd round, I 1000% hate the pick. He is an overrated player who has questionable speed and durability. Also, there is first round talent just sitting there at positions of need. Nick Perry, Janoris Jenkins, Stephon Gilmore are all first round guys who are MUCH better picks. If they were to go in the first, there is still a guy like Vinny Curry who I MUCH prefer.

Not sure I’d take Poe that early, but I agree with the logic. Corner also needs to be addressed.

This is a crappy board that's left

for the Giants. One of the worst case scenarios. I like seeing that though cause I wanna know what will happen if worst comes to worst. Fleener’s a decent pick but I don’t think a lot of teams would draft him that high. I’d wait it out in round 2 for him. I’d take Lamar Miller in round one before Fleener. I like Hosley but the Gaints haven’t drafted a DB under 6 feet since Nam.

by The Cole Train on Feb 15, 2012 2:31 PM EST reply actions

Agreed.

I like Fleener, but after looking at more film of him…I’m thinking he’s a 2nd round talent. I’d rather have Minniefield, Sanu, or Miller. This board definitely is the worst case scenario, though.

the right fit

Fleener is just not a good name for a Giants TE. I don’t expect good blocking from a guy named Fleener. A Giants TE needs a name like Boss. Or Bear. Or Zeke Mowatt.

I acknowledge the height preference, but I am really hoping they go for short-area quickness and grab a real nickel CB like Hosley.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

Panthers

I love Jenkins in the 2nd. I doubt he falls that far but i would love it if he did. I dont like the Brockers pick. We have young DTs who improved at the end of the year. Unless someone slips to us (Blackmon, Kalil, or Claiborne) i think it’s either Kikpatrick or trade down (and hopefully Zack Brown after the trade down)

I think he is, even though many seem to disagree.

He is really inconsistent, he has no burst, inferior competition, he could never drop into coverage, he’s not particularly fast, he has no pass rushing moves, relies too much on strength, and he can’t use his hands very well.

well i for one disagree

but I also view him as a DE not an OLB which he would be for NYJ

For the Pack

I like Branch as a 34 OLB conversion guy, but Perry is even better. Unless Branch has a really good combine, and Perry has a poor one, I don’t see us picking Branch over Perry.

For our second round, unless Lamar Miller or David Wilson is sitting there at #60, I don’t see us taking a RB. I’d say Kendall Reyes would be the pick there. Thanks for the mock though!

It’ll take at least two #1s to move up to pick RG3, though. Historically it always has.

I like Upshaw, but unles he shows he can play inside I don’t think that is the pick. Houston came around by the end of the year, and was voted their rookie of the year. I don’t see them passing on him that quick.

Good to know

I hadn’t heard how well Houston was doing.. i remembered him struggling early in the year. I’ll change the pick in my next one.
