Mock Draft #2 w/trades 4 rounds

Ok fans, I'm running through a 4 round mock for the first time. There will be moves and trades I'm sure some won't like, but I'll give reasons for those trades. I'll give some reasoning for 1st round picks only... I'm always open for feedback. See below each round for the trade details. Here we go.

Round 1

1) Colts - Andrew Luck - QB - Stanford

2) Redskins (from Rams) - Robert Griffin III - QB - Baylor - He won't be there at 6, Tannehill is a reach at 6 and can't see that happening... I do see the Redskins making a big push for Kyle Orton, and this only happens if he signs elsewhere.

3) Vikings - Ryan Kalil - OT - USC - I originally had Claiborne in this spot, but Viking's fans convinced me this is the choice if he's there.

4) Browns - Trent Richardson - RB - Alabama - This was a tough call, I almost put Blackmon here, WR is a glaring need, but WR is deep in this class and can address that later. Hardesty can't stay healthy and Hillis may or may not be back.

5) Bucs - Morris Claiborne - CB - LSU - The Bucs need 2 CBs, good start with the best in this draft class

6) Rams - Riley Reiff - OT - Iowa - With Kalil off the board, and the Rams still needing ancor at LT, this is a no brainer pick.

7) Jaguars - Quinton Coples - DE - North Carolina - The Jags need a lot of help... you've gotta start somewhere, questions surrounding Coples 'heart' but I think he's fine.

8) Dolphins - Devon Still - DT - Penn State - With the Dolphins switching to a 4-3 they will need a DT, Still is a good run defender that gets you pressure on the QB on passing downs.

9) Panthers - Courtney Upshaw - DE/OLB - Alabama - The panthers could go a few ways here, Kirkpatrick or Brockers, but Upshaw is the better player of the 3.

10) Bills - Justin Blackmon - WR - Oklahoma State - I think the Bills sprint up to make this selection. Even if Johnson is retained, they need a second weapon. They have big needs on D as well, but take the BPA to fill a need and Blackmon is it.

11) Chiefs - Jonathan Martin - OT - Stanford - The chiefs are a puzzle to me, they have a few key FAs (Bowe and Carr that they may need to address here, they need a G, so DeCastro could go here too, his buddy Martin is the better player IMO so he's the pick. Maybe they move down, but I think they take BPA

12) Eagles (from Seahawks) - Luke Kuechly - MLB - Boston College - The Eagles need help at LB, 191 tackles shows this guy can get 'er done. It's possible Kuechly is there at 15 and this may not be necessary, but if it doesn't cost much to move up here (it doesn't dont worry Eagles fans) I think they make this move. Seattle 'could' actually make this pick depending on Hawthorne, but I'm betting he's resigned.

13) Cardinals - Michael Floyd - WR - Notre Dame - Personally I think he's a much better receiver than Jeffery is, and I think he would compliment Fitz perfectly, problem is if the Cards think his off the field issues are in fact behind him... if they think so, this is your pick.

14) Cowboys - Dre Kirkpatrick - CB - Alabama - Kirkpatrick is a solid corner and the Cowboys need a lot of help in their secondary. Dre is the BPA on D, now that they know he smokes pot, he fits perfectly in Dallas.

15) Seahawks - Melvin Ingram - DE - South Carolina - Seattle has a well documented need for a pass rushing DE, if Ingram is in fact here, look for them to take him. More speculation is coming in that Tannehill could be the pick for the Seahawks here again, but my money is on DE.

16) Broncos (from Jets) - Michael Brockers - DT - LSU - The Broncos need this guy and are not afraid of making a big deal in the draft to get their guy.

17) Bengals - Alshon Jeffrey - WR - South Carolina - Green needs help and with Simpson possibly leaving via FA, a solid #2 is needed, (even if Simpson is retained, an upgrade is needed).

18) Chargers - David DeCastro - OG - Stanford - The chargers need LBs, but they can't pass up their need for G in this spot... LB will be addressed later, BPA here.

19) Bears - Kendall Wright - WR - Baylor - There is no questioning the need at WR, Wright is all over the place on draft boards, I've seen him in the top 10 and I've seen him to the 49ers. I see him here. There are questions about his size, but with the kind of QB Cutler is, I think they will work well together. I also see the Bears getting another WR later in the draft to compliment.

20) Titans - Whitney Mercilus - DE - Illinois - OL is a big need too, but hard to pass him up here.

21) Bengals - Alfanzo Dennard - CB - Nebraska - Dennard constantly shut down WRs in college and was avoided in most games. One of the best cover corners in college period. I don't like Jenkins here for his off the field issues - The bengals are trying to clean that up a bit, so why take a guy like him and risk it.

22) Browns - Ryan Tannehill - QB - Texas A&M - If you listen closely you can hear the fans in Cleveland yell 'WHAT!?!' in unison. This is a strong possibility folks, I don't think FO is sold on McCoy. Personally I like him, but Tannehill is better suited to run the Browns offense.

23) Ravens (from Lions) - Peter Konz - C - Wisconsin - Trading up for a C? Really? Birk is getting up there in age and needs to be replaced, Konz is the best C in this class.

24) Steelers - Donta Hightower - MLB - Alabama - I think Poe could go here, but NT will be addressed later.

25) NY Jets (from Broncos) - Zach Brown - OLB - North Carolina - You could be looking OT here and Adams, but if Brown is here, he's got to be the pick .

26) Texans - Mohamed Sanu - WR - Rutgers - I think Sanu fits well with the Texans, I'm not fully convinced WR goes here, glaring need though.

27) Patriots - Mark Barron - S - Alabama - The Patriots need DE, OLB a bit more, but Barron won't be there at 31 if they try and wait for him.

28) Packers - Nick Perry - OLB/DE - USC - Clay can't do it all by himself, the Packers need another rush LB that can get to into the backfield and cause some pressure and sack the QB. I think Perry is that guy here.

29) Lions (from Ravens) - Janoris Jenkins - CB - North Alabama - The lions are not afraid of his off the field concerns and they really need help on corner.

30) 49ers - Cordy Glenn - OG - Georgia - Most drafters have WR here, but I like Glenn here for 2 reasons, 1) He's an instant upgrade at RG, the biggest hole on the OL. 2) He can play RT if is needed or if the 49ers decide to move Anthony Davis to G. Solid player

31) Patriots - Chase Minnifield - CB - Virginia - This is a very underrated CB and the Patriots could use an upgrade.

32) Giants - Dwayne Allen - TE - Clemson - With Ballards injury and likely out for next season, this decision is an easy one.

That's the 1st round, below see the trades that went down.

Redskins trade #6 overall pick, 2013 1st round pick and 2012 3rd round pick to the Rams for #2 overall pick in 2012.

The Eagles trade 2012 #15 pick and 2012 4th round pick (4th pick in that round) to the Seahawks for the #12 pick.

The Ravens trade #29 pick, 3rd round pick in 2012 for the Lions #23 pick

The NY Jets trade #16 pick to the Broncos for pick #25, a 2012 3rd round pick, and a 2013 3rd round pick.

Round 2

1) Rams - Rueben Randall - WR - LSU -

2) Colts - Coby Fleener - TE - Stanford -

3) Vikings - Vontaze Burfict - MLB - Arizona State -

4) Bucs - David Wilson - RB - Virginia Tech

5) Browns - Dwight Jones - WR - North Carolina

6) (Trade) Dolphins (from Jags) - Lavonte David - OLB - Nebraska

7) Redskins - Juron Criner - WR - Arizona

8) Carolina - Casey Hayward - CB - Vanderbilt

9) Bills - Ronnell Lewis - OLB - Oklahoma

10) Jags (from Dolphins) - Jayron Hosley - CB - Virginia Tech

11) (Trade) Bears (from Seahawks) - Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

15) NY Jets - Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

16) Patriots - Andre Branch - DE - Clemson

17) Chargers - Vinny Curry - OLB/DE - Marshall

18) Seahawks (from Bears) - Lamar Miller - RB - Miami

19) Eagles - Sean Spence - OLB - Miami

20) Titans - Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

21) Bengals - Brandon Washington - G - Miami

22) Lions - Markelle Martin, SS, Oklahoma State

30) 49ers - Marvin McNutt - WR - Iowa

31) Giants - Kelechi Osemele - OG/T - Iowa State

32) Patriots - Bobby Wagner - OLB - Utah State

Not a lot of movement in the 2nd round, but the 2 trades were:

Jags trade 6th pick to Dolphins for 10th pick and 4th round pick

Seattle trades 11th pick to the Bears for the 18th pick and 3rd round pick (17th pick)

Round 3

1) Colts - Amini Silatolu - G - Midwestern State

2) Rams - Jonathan Massaquoi - OLB - Troy

3) Vikings - Leonard Johnson - CB - Iowa State

30) Jets (from 49ers) - Cory Harkey - TE - UCLA

31) Patriots - Stephen Hill - WR - Georgia Tech

32) Giants - Bernard Pierce - RB - Temple

Ok, this is getting tough. Going through team needs and pegging right fits for one team is hard enough, doing it for 32 is exhausting... players going to other teams just before another would select him, then taking another position because the BPA is not in that postion... anyway, here are the trades for round 3.

KC trades pick 11 to the NY Jets for pick 14 of 3rd round and a 2012 6th round pick.

Denver trades pick 25 to the 49ers for pick 30 in the 3rd round and their 4th round pick

trades: the Bills traded a 2013 3rd round pick for the Eagles 4th round 2012 pick.

There you have it boys and girls. My first 4 round mock. I'm curious on how fans of various teams think I did. I'm sure there will be some fans that are upset and some fans that are extremely happy... that's how it goes at the real draft too right? Thanks in advance for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Vikings

Kalil—Great pick. Nuff said.

Burfict--??? No thanks. I would take Gilmore, Hayward, and Poe before Burfict. They all fill a bigger need as well.

Leonard Johnson—I like the kid, but being 5’9" with 28" arms is not advantagous for a Tampa 2 Corner. If we take Gilmore or Hayward in the 2nd, I would rather have Kendall Reyes or Brandon Thompson in the 3rd.

Brian Quick—Okay I guess. I’d rather bolster the defense and take Nigel Bradham here.

Burfict

Nobody seems to want him, every mock I see someone complains lol, he’s rough around the edges, but plays with fire… the Vikings D could use some ‘attitude’ on D besides Allen.

by tarryhawk on Feb 16, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Attitude is great

But our secondary needs an infusion of talent. It’s not even Burficts character that I don’t like, I think he is overrated as a talent. He completely disappears for long stretches at a time. No thanks. I won’t be surprised if he gets drafted on day 3.

As a Vikings fan

If he fell to us, I say take him, you always want a player who got passed up by everytime with a chip on their shoulder, when they were supposed to be a top 10 pick just a year ago, he could very well be the next closest thing to Ray Lewis, as striking fear into opposing players, in no way, am I saying he will be the next Ray Ray or even a Hall of famer, but just potential wise, and I love the dude..

by hickenizgriz on Feb 16, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see it

The dude is all bark and no bite IMO.

the vikes dont have good enough coaching to handle him.

the fits coaching wise are the steelers, ravens, giants, 49ers, TB, maybe NE, etc… those teams can handle the type of guy that Burfict is

Man if the Bills can get Charles in round 3

and Norman in round 4, that would be absolute steals.

Charles

a bit of a stretch, most likely mid 2nd round pick, but the teams that have TE as a need, went in another direction. Norman in 4 could happen depending on combine.

Im a Bills fan

so Im not complaining.

Plus Blackmon in round 1

The only thing I’m not a fan of is Ronnell Lewis when Vinny Curry, Stephen Gilmore, Andre Branch, and Brock Osweiler are available in the second. I’d rather address the SLB position in free agency or later rounds.

yeah

I feel like Curry would definitely be the pick there. I would be excited about Ta’amu at the end of the fourth too.

by Mr. h on Feb 16, 2012 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

Jags

1) Coples is fine. Cannot really complain.
2) Gilmore, Branch, Curry, McNutt all seem like better and more realistic selections.
3)Not really complaining, but I do feel like Joe Adams, the offensive tackles (Zebrie Sanders and Bobbie Massie) and the safeties(Antoni Allen and Harrison Smith) are better options value-wise at the spot
4) Josh Norman instead of Phillip Blake makes me a much happier person. However assuming CB taken already other players are still better choices IMO

If I had the board fall this way, I think I would have drafted like this:
1)Coples
2)Gilmore
3)Joe Adams
4)Marvin Jones and Mitchell Schwartz

Ravens

Not a fan of this mock at all.Don’t like moving up for Konz. I don’t feel we would move up for a C and we may not even draft him if he’s there at our spot. It’s possible, but I think we will re-sign Gurode and he will start at C. Also don’t like Toon in the 2nd because he’s nearly a clone to Tandon Doss who we drafted last year. Streeter or Hill would be better fits to stretch the field. Finally we don’t have our 4th rounder it belongs to the Bills.

Thank you… I missed that, I’ll fix it.

Wow, you got Ta'amu rated really low

If the Texans don’t go after Poe in the 1st, they’ll take Ta’amu in the 2nd if he’s there

ya

I dropped the ball on 2 DT, Ta’amu and Wolfe who I didn’t have selected in first 4 rounds… good thing about a first mock, you can fix it in the 2nd one haha.

by tarryhawk on Feb 16, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Both of which the Texans could target

Ta’amu would be great at NT, while Wolfe would be a nice 3-4 DE for us

Bengals - I'm stunned

The Bengals cannot pass on DeCastro if he falls to 17. As it stands right now they have 0 guards who have started in the NFL on their roster (technically, I suppose Clint Boling started a game or two last year, but was pulled in favor of a terrible Mike McGlynn last year).

maybe the weirdest bengals mock i've seen

A WR in round 1 2 years in a row when Cedric Benson is gone? Alfonzo Dennard who got blown up at the Senior Bowl and most scouts are calling an NFL safety… no thanks, it doesn’t seem like you did your hw on the bengals

2 WRs in 4 rounds

and Alshon Jeffery has the same skills as Green, only not as good, what would he bring that AJ doesn’t already do better?

by The Dealio on Feb 17, 2012 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

yeah, not a good mock for the Bengals (especially round 1)

But he did grab Isaiah Pead, which would make UC fans happy. lol

depth

and a solid #2 receiver, you need more than 1 good/great WR. There is nobody else there.

Redskins

I’m not a fan of trading the farm to get RG3, but this isn’t as bad a trade as some I’ve seen. I wouldn’t make it, but it is what it is.
I think it’s possible that Shanny will target Juron Criner, so that is a reasonable pick. I don’t really like the 4th round picks. I don’t know a lot about the kids you slotted for us in the 4th, but I’d rather see us take one of the OL still on the board than an ILB.

Steelers

So our current NT has a knee injury, why would we want Chapman? I think that’s a big reach. I’d rather have Ta’amu.

And then the draft just gets bizarre. RB then QB, while ignoring one of our biggest needs in either OG or OT.

I’d be furious if this was the Steelers draft.

I agree, I like the RB, I’m not a fan of Redman and Mendenhall was just bad in a lot of games this year. OL over Harnish for sure though… I’ll fix in 2nd mock.

BTW

Our OL was more responsible for our inability to run than anything. Draft another RB and we’ll have the same issue with a different name.

yea. unfortunately a fail for the Steelers

Hightower is pretty good. but I would probably take Glenn instead.
Chapman instead of Ta’amu is just not good. we dont need another NT with knee issues.
James and Harnish MIGHT be possibilities, but completely ignoring the OL is a terrible idea. RB and QB are both secondary needs and would be luxury picks this early in the draft.

by steel.curtain.number2 on Feb 17, 2012 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

good points

Mendenhall likely not playing for most if not all of next season with ACL, which made James a high priority IMO… Harnish… ya maybe a bit early for him… I did miss the OL, sorry Steeler fans. will get you some in 2nd mock.

Great 49ers mock

Love the strategy. I would have taken Stephen Hill instead of McNutt, but still like getting a starting RG/RT in round 1, starting WR in round 2 and moving up to get a starting CB in round 3. Good draft for 9ers if it goes down like that.

Chiefs

DeCastro
Adams
Pead/Pierce
Ta’amu

would be an almost perfect start to the draft(hard time making the Jets trade and passing up Allen though)

1st Round: DeCastro Over Jeffrey
1st Round: Jenkins or Barron Over Dennard
2nd Round: Great Pick
3rd Round: Great Pick
4th Round: Someone besides Page Please we are not in need of a Slot WR we need a LEGIT NUMBER 2 WR

Bengals

That’s why I had Jeffrey at 1 and a slot in 4th… I didn’t realize the G situation was that bad. I’ll keep it in mind on my update. I still think Dennard is a better fit though :)

by tarryhawk on Feb 16, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

No our G is a major need

we only have 2 back-up guard signed on the team this very moment and Dennard is more of a man-man DB and the Bengals said that we are going to play more zone

by Touhue Cha on Feb 16, 2012 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

we have Shipley as our slot

slot is a non issue, G, CB, RB and S is our biggest needs, then DL in the mid to late rounds

Got to disagree

Fails to address any of the needs on the offensive line. We have NO answer for the future at OC, RG, or LT.
At least our defensive secondary has youth that is being developed and performed decent until injuries began to take their toll.
Not to mention the management for Detroit has said that they plan on addressing the offensive line and that they are an offensive team (with plans to ensure they remain that way).

I like the players chosen separately. As a whole though I think it really misses the focus Detroit has.

Packers

Again, they won’t draft a RB in rounds 1-3. They need depth, but that’s it. They may not even draft a RB at all if they like Brandon Saine, who played well last year in a limited role. I prefer Vinny Curry over Nick Perry for various reasons, but that’s my opinion. OLB is a major need, so Nick Perry isn’t a bad pick. DE is also a major need. The CB or S position needs to be addressed as well.

I’m pretty sure that was one of the worst drafts I’ve seen in a while for them AND you got us more picks.

A DT is not needed this draft, nor is a TE.

And the home of the .... JETS!!!

Lol so bad for us.

Zach Brown looks like strictly a 4-3 OLB, Antonio Allen is a SS which really isn’t a need, a DT isn’t needed at all, and A QB can be signed in FA. Bad bad bad.

S & NT

I think Allen might be able to play free safety in a 2-deep system.

But the Jets drafted Kenrick Ellis last year at NT, and they still have Pouha starting.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

Giants

With the first rounder, I personally would have picked up Mike Adams over Dwayne Allen. Then I saw that we got Osemele and I was like oh hell yeah, that’s fine. Pierce is fine, a power back is something we’d look for if we cut ties with Jacobs. I don’t know too much about the 4th round pick to make an intelligent judgement.

Your mock is certainly a real good one for the Giants, though if I were to remock I’d probably go:

1) Mike Adams, OT
2) Chandler Jones, DE
3) Ladarius Green, TE
4) George Iloka, SS
4)

by BigBlueIntervention on Feb 16, 2012 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Of course, in the real draft, you don't know you will get Osemele

While TE is a huge need, it is hard to pass on a LT at #32. I would even think the Steelers and Lions grab him before us.

Osemele and Pierce are good fits for the team. I see very inconsistent grades on Harris, but the Giants would have to have a huge BPA grade on him to draft a DT this early when he’d likely be 5th on the depth chart (Canty-Joseph-Austin-Tuck). It’s the deepest position on the team.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

David DeCastro projects to be another Chris Snee.

And we’re talking about RT here, not Guard. Mike Adams would be a great bookend with William Beatty. You have to take into account the positional value as well. If you have an OT that’s as “talented” as a TE, you take the OT, ESPECIALLY if you have a need for it. And we do. Mike Adams is talented enough to be the BPA at 32. I’ll take him and laugh all the way to the bank.

Chris Snee wasn't considered Chris Snee when he was in the draft

when he got drafted it was considered a reach and we were just doing the coache’s son in law a favor.

Actually Mitch Petrus was probably more well regarded then Snee going into the draft, as many had Petrus as the best guard in the draft that year yet somehow he slipped, probably cuz he speaks entirely in gibberish.

Mark Barron is a beast

I doubt he’s going past #32. I’d say all this Dwayne Allen to the GIants stuff is just fun for the offseason, but once the real thing starts he’s not making it past the GIants. He’s got elite size, smarts, skills and played and starred on a great defense. Barron’s a Giant if he’s there.

hmm

I didn’t peg Upshaw as a reach at all, he’s a top 10 talent, I went BPA there you are right that he would project as better DE in your 4-3 than OLB in a 4-3… I can see your displeasure in that case. I had Hayward as best corner available at that point…

Broncos

Interesting move. I am not sure what to think of it. There are limited 1st round talents in this draft, Brockers is one of them and they are not afraid of moving about in the draft, they openly declared that they considered moving back into the 1st last year when Fairley was dropping. I am not sure this guy quite fits that bill yet though, he way wow them in interviews but the tape doesnt put him in that category yet.
The other thing that makes me think that this might not happen is that I think there is a lot of value to be had in the 2nd and 3rd round and losing the 3rd rounder might not be worth it for such a raw kid.

RB is a need but would go for Martin over Polk, concerned about Polks injuries and conditioning.

Not sure how you worked the trade out which gives the Broncos the 30th in the 4th round as you traded the 3rd round pick away.

Dont know much about the SS you have picked so cant comment too much on him but what I have read on him doesnt fill me with hope. But I do like Jarius Wright and Mike Martin as 3rd round talents so to pick on of those up in the 4th would be great.

1st rd-miami is going to 4-3 but dont need a DT, starks and odrick(1st rd in 2010 draft) will man those 2 spots and if blackmon fell that far he would probably be the pick or martin, upshaw or ingram

2nd rd-lavonte david is from nebraska btw and i dont think he worth trading up for plus miami has much bigger needs if OT or DE is not addressed in the 1st it has to be here, vinny curry is a great value here and if we went offense in the 1st curry would be the pick

3rd-i believe qb will be addressed in free agency, so the pick here would probably be zebrie sanders OT or harrison smith S

4th-not needing to trade up in the 2nd, TE and CB is still a need and at good value lardarius green or cliff harris would be good picks

A team switching to a 4-3, though some key positions would be of need, Still gives the pressure up the middle I didn’t think they had. David good rush LB is needed…. Browns

Why you’d mock a RB with the #4 pick is a total head scratcher. At BEST he would be good for 5 years, and thats pushing it in that division. Then Tannenhill at #22, he would be a late 3rd to 4th rounder if the better QB’s had come out this draft.

The Browns are being build to last with quality players, picked at smart spots in the draft, so the first round failed.

I like the second round pick. Third Round is a meh, thats where things get muttled, and 4th is a who knows.

How would I have done it. I would make the Redskins a better offer to trade up and get the #6 position, depending on who the bucs took, I trade back again to either Seattle, Dallas, or Philly. Picking up 2012 2nd & 3rd round picks or possible 2013 2nd & 3rd round picks.
Take the best available WR in the 12-15 range, then at 22 take the best DE. use the extra pick(s) and go LB & CB, the OL. Picking up 2 new WR’s, DE, LB, CB, & OL and that adresses many needs.

Really good draft. I like the trade down and I love the Coples, Hosley, Streeter, and Jones picks. But the Jags aren’t drafting a Center, so with that pick I could see them going in a couple different directions, Josh Norman, Ladarius Green, Mitchell Schwartz, or Jarius Wright would be good options there.

Cardinals

No way do we take a WR in the first, especially with Decastro there. If Martin, Rieff, Decastro are gone in the first I could see us trading down to get a 2nd or 3rd round pick and selecting Mike Adams in the 1st rd.

3rd round pick is good as we need as much talent at OT as we can get.

4th rd I cannot see us taking a CB. Not at all in this draft. We have Peterson, Marshall, Toler, Jefferson, Adams already on the roster. It’s not even remotely a need unless we fail to re-sign Marshall. The way the 4th rd went, no doubt in my mind we would look to add depth to our DLine and pickup DT Ta’amu or whatever his name is.

Our biggest needs in order are:

OT (left & right)
RG
OLB
ILB
WR
NT or DE
