Offseason team needs: Giants

Offseason-needs-giants-off_medium

Tight End: Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum likely aren’t going to be ready to go when the 2012 season begins, leaving just Bear Pascoe as the lone remaining TE. While Bear Pascoe will forever be etched in the annals of NFL lore (he was the first player named after a circus animal to catch a pass in the Super Bowl), he’s not exactly a legitimate starting TE. Obviously, the Giants will need to bring in a player or two at TE.

Right Tackle: Kareem McKenzie and Chris Snee, in my opinion, were the best tandem RG/RT in the NFL in 2010. In 2011, the play of both players fell off dramatically, especially McKenzie’s. Kareem is also a free agent. Major hole to fill here for the champs.

Star-divide

Guard: I really like Kevin Boothe, but I like him in the exact role he played last season… a valuable backup at multiple positions along the line. The Giants started the season will David Diehl at LG, and Diehl was a horror show. When LT Will Beatty was lost for the season with an eye injury, Diehl kicked out from LG to LT, Boothe filled in at LG, and played far better than Diehl had. At the time, I remember thinking "Hmmm… Diehl-Boothe-Baas is the trio protecting Eli’s blind side? The Giants are done." Oops. Nevertheless, the Giants are about $7 million over the cap, and need to shed some dollars. Diehl would make sense as a cap casualty. He’s set to make $3.825 million in 2012. The Giants would be wise to find themselves a new LG and move Boothe back into the role where he’s the best fit.

#3 Wide Receiver: Mario Manningham is a free agent, and is probably going to get an offer elsewhere that the Giants won’t (or can’t) match. Do you trust the next guy to step up (something the Giants have had some luck with), or do you bring in outside help?

#2 Running back: Lesser need here, but there’s a possibility the Giants dump Brandon Jacobs’ $4.9 million cap number for 2012. Jacobs is willing to take a pay cut, but what exactly does that mean? A million less? Two million? I’m not even sure that’ll be enough to keep him on the roster. Jacobs ran for 3.8 yards per carry last season, he was only on the field for 26.6% of the Giants’ offensive snaps in 2011, and he turns 30 in July. Do that math, and the writing could be on the wall for Jacobs. If the Giants cut him, they’ll need someone to back up Ahmad Bradshaw if they don’t believe Danny Ware is that guy.

Offseason-needs-giants-def_medium

DEFENSE

Linebacker/safety: First of all, I know that the chart above looks weird. Three safeties and two linebackers? Why? Well, here are the snap counts for the Giants’ safeties last season:

Antrel Rolle, 1377 (98%). Kenny Phillips, 1282 (89%). Deon Grant, 1126 (80%).

And the linebacker snap counts:

Michael Boley, 1177 (84%). Mathias Kiwanuka, 975 (69%). The next closest player? Jacquain Williams, with 597 (43%), who only got that many snaps because Boley missed two and a half games.

So that makes pegging down the Giants’ defensive needs a little more tricky. Does defensive coordinator Perry Fewell prefer a defense that primarily utilizes 3 safeties, or did he adjust because he didn’t like his options at linebacker?

- If it’s the former, linebacker isn’t an enormous need, as Boley and Mathias Kiwanuka both played well last season. Meanwhile, Williams was a rookie that, at the very least, showed enough promise to be considered decent in terms of depth at the position, and Chase Blackburn (a free agent) was a monumental pleasant surprise after being signed off the street prior to Week 13. Safety would be a much greater need in that scenario.

- However, if it’s the latter and Fewell would rather have three linebackers on the field in most situations, linebacker becomes a much bigger need, and safety less so.

Got it? Was that intelligible? Sort of? OK. Anyway, with the Giants’ defense, it’s tougher to decipher than most teams.

Cornerback: Aaron Ross is a free agent, as is Terrell Thomas, who is also still rehabbing a torn ACL injury sustained last August. Prince Amukamara was toasted when he got his opportunities last season, but his poor play comes with excuses. The Prince was late to camp (he was the last first round pick to sign his rookie contract), and on his second day of practice, he broke his foot and missed the first 10 weeks of the season. It's tough to come in and play against the highest level of football talent in the world under those circumstances. On the other side, Corey Webster is unspectacular, but as solid as they come.

Defense End: Just because… you know… they’re collectors.

Fewell prefers his 3 safety sets. Calls 'em the big nickel package.

We’ll probably keep an eye on LB/SS tweeners in the draft…so George Iloka, Mark Barron, Lavonte David, Sean Spence…they all make some sense. We are trying to develop Chad Jones, who will be able to resume football activities, as a MIKE.

so...Mark Barron.

Iloka is kind of a tortoise, and David and Spence are both smaller then Amukamara. Barron’s a horse, I think he’s probably the more likely pick over the TEs.

Overall, I'd agree with this. Just saying they'd be on the radar

especially if they are value at where we’re picking. I wouldn’t mind having David. Small, but fast, great instincts and a decent passrusher

To me, those are guys you can pick up late

Teams will drop the guys that are too slow for safety, too small for LB. I think Andrew Rich from BYU and Tom DeCicco from Pitt went undrafted last year, and they did not get any interest from us.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

Can't argue with any thing here

and you know I would if I could. Only think I don’t like is the three safety crap, but that’s on Fewell.

Actually I will. Amukamara was excellent when given the opportunity in the playoffs. Looks like a stud.

Williams was the Nickel LB . It wasnt just injuries that got him on the field. Kiwanuka played all over .If Williams and Kiwi were on the field Kiwi was at DE.Also the Giants lost there starting MLB Jon Goff to an ACL he is a FA but may return People who mock for the Giants take size into consideration especially early. The Giants are the Tallest defense in the NFL. They absolutely value size ,length and athleticism on defense. Yes naysayers they have taken players that dont fit this mold late in the draft and as UDFA but early they target athletes.

I disagree with Guard

Snee is a lock at RG, even after a bad season. With a full offseason and some good coaching, Petrus will step up and become our LG. All he needs to do is work on his pass blocking, the mauling run blocking mindset is already there. As far as safety goes, Sash may or may not be a good 3rd guy, not enough sample size from him. I refuse to expect anything out of Chad Jones, but if he can come back anywhere close to 100%, he looked like a monster coming out of college, and was my favorite pick of the draft that year.

by #56 4life on Feb 19, 2012 12:59 PM EST reply actions

That we need one

We don’t need a Guard because we have Snee at RG, and I think Petrus will be a very good LG next year, so I disagree with the statement that Guard is a need.

It's a need

When you don’t have someone who you know is good at that position.

By your logic I can say we have zero needs, because I think all of ur players are good enough to start.

Giants have 3 players that grade out well at the G position.

Well sure

But since this is a mocking the draft site, drafting a guard wouldn’t make sense by that logic because we wouldn’t KNOW he was good. We would just THINK he was good. So why draft someone who we THINK is good when we already have someone in house who we THINK the same thing about, but have actually seen him play? Sorry, don’t know how to bold lol

I think Kelechi Osemele is the perfect fit for the Giants at 32…absolute mauler, can play RT

I dont think the Giants NEED anything on D, any pick there would be a luxury…

I dont see what people like about Ladarius Green, I am much much higher on Evan Rodriguez….where is he projected? He would be great value in the 4th rd…

If Kellen Moore is avalible in rd 5, id be all over it, yeah hes small and yeah he doesnt have the strongest arm….but neither did Pennington, I think he could develop to be a poor mans Brees

by Chris3035 on Feb 19, 2012 2:28 PM EST reply actions

Got an up-close look at Green at the Senior Bowl. Looks like he could be a nice big target in the passing game, but the way he’s built, he’s never going to see a ton of snaps. Legs like toothpicks. No way he can hold up in the blocking game unless he bulks up.

by JimmyK on Feb 19, 2012 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

Thats what I saw as well

He is more similar to Plaxico Burress or Ramses Barden than he is Gronk or Graham…

Agreed…how would we rank Massie, Z. Sanders and Nate Potter? Any chance one of them would be avalible in rd 2 for the Giants?

In the 3rd and 4th rd who would be the best avalible RBs? Could we land James? Pead? Or the guy from Temple around there? Would they be worth it?

by Chris3035 on Feb 19, 2012 8:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Tackles & RBs

Sanders and potter lack run blocking strength, I don’t see either one as better than Brewer. Sanders fits a ZBS team and Potter is a mid-rounder. People seem to be high on Massie, I did not study him much.

Pierce may be there in the 4th, I would expect the others to go in the 3rd.

Off Season Needs

Of course much depends on the Salary Cap moves, but Draft Needs appear to be TE, Offensive Guard / RT, RB (3rd of 4th round). Jerry Reese usually gets thing right. There will be quality OL and TE options in the first three rounds.

by den1114 on Feb 20, 2012 3:42 PM EST reply actions

Can't disagree with much here

Cutting Diehl, Jacobs, and McKenzie would save like 11 million.

You let Aaron Ross go as well, because while he was a good tackler, he just got roasted in coverage. TT is a much better player when healthy so I would give him a one year incentive based deal.

Rolle is making an absurd amount of money so I would restructure his contract, or release him, because frankly, you wouldn’t have to look far to find an upgrade over him.

Obviously, TE, RB and the O-line are important, but you cannot just assume the defense we saw in the playoffs was the “real” Giants defense. In the regular season, it gave up 6200 yards and 400 points, which is horrible. Stephen Tulloch would be an amazing pickup for MLB, but if not him, someone in FA, because the MLB market is loaded.

For TE, Fred Davis would be a nice pickup, but he might be franchised. Dwayne Allen may not fall to us in the draft, so if all else fails, Joel Dreesen from the Texans would be a good pickup. Not dynamic, but cheap and better than what the Giants have.

O-line…I really don’t know many of the draft O-line guys, but in FA, Jared Gaither would be an underrated pickup for LT, and if you get him, you can slide Beatty over to RT. Evan Mathis would be nice as well.

For WR…that double agent traitorous, erm, receiver for the Eagles who used to play for the Giants would be cheap pickup.

There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only BLUE WALLS.

Your safety comments are exactly what I said on BBV

However on further reflection – I think Fewell is committed to the 3 safety thing until somebody runs for 200 yards on us.

Although Barron seems like even more of an inside the box safety than Rolle, I don’t know if he can cover well enough to step in and replace Grant right away. Rolle’s cap number is so high he’s our SS for two more years at least.

At 32 (what a great spot to draft at!) it seems more likely that a TE we like will be on the board. OL works too, but I think we’re more likely to go there in rounds 2 or 3.
