3 Round Mock Draft

I'm putting out another addition of a mock draft. No Explanations are included because I didn't want to pick the right player but give a bad explanation. Any questions or explanations needed feel free to ask. Only two trades included and they are two trades that i feel pretty confident about happening.

1. Washington trades their 1st and 2nd round pick this year as well as a 1st round pick next season to move up and select RG III.

2. Cincinatti trades their 1st round pick (#17) and their 2nd round pick to move up and select Trent Richardson.

Hate it. Both players have terrible value at where they were picked.

Well I, and most, would disagree

Brockers isnt a top 15, maybe not even top 20, and Hosley is a 3rd rounder. We already have a bunch of young developing DTs, it makes no since to bring in another project.

Really? I can see 3 or 4 teams in the top ten that might take him.

Brockers is a top 10 because the only other first round DT is Still and he can't penetrate like Brockers can

Young with a high upside at DT. Hosley is a mid to late 2nd for me but there was a run on CB’s and I love the insight you have. No suggestions of who you all would rather take. No input on anything.

by Jonathan Hake on Feb 19, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

have you watched him play?

Brockers doesnt penetrates. He has a good use of hands and a high motor but he doesnt penetrate or dominate at the line. Still is a much better DT

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

I see a different player in Brockers

I think he bull rushes and stacks and sheds very well. He doesn’t have finesse moves but who needs them when you have the strength and length he has. I think he will be special but I can go back to the vanilla Dre mock.

by Jonathan Hake on Feb 19, 2012 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

I dont know who you were watching. I rarely ever saw him drive a lineman back. He just doesnt have the raw power to push. He’s quick and uses his hands well but his leverage is bad, he doesnt have dominating strength, and he has a terrible first step

How about this then

Brockers does a good job of holding the poa, he can split double teams with a nice swim ove, he also has a nifty little spin move. He sti gets caught up in the wash sometimes, but the dude is 21 years old, and has only been playing DT for like 2 seasons.

And if I wanted you to change the Bills draft….I would have said something. So think about that before you get your panties in a bunch.

In each additional round

Teams with the same records rotate draft picks so that they can get essentially “equal” value in each draft. Last year we picked 3rd overall as Buffalo, but also had the second pick of the second round, rotating with Denver and Cincy.

Chiefs

Love the trade down and picks in rounds 1 and 2. Not sure I would go safety in round 3 with NT’s Ta’amu and Chapman still on the board.

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Feb 19, 2012 9:33 PM EST reply actions

Well I believe safety to be a bigger need than NT.

We run around half of our snaps in a Nickel formation without a NT and we have Powe to step in as a run stuffer. Also Chapman and Ta’amu both being available likely means one of them is available in the 4th.

by Jonathan Hake on Feb 19, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

With your safety need, are you displacing Lewis or drafting a backup safety?

Merlinnj

by merlinnj on Feb 19, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

I am replacing McGraw

We run a lot of 3 safety formations. Allen also has the ability to play solid man coverage so he can be used against bigger receivers or he can man up tight ends.

I might prefer Josh Norman to Trumaine Johnson but I am fine with either. I really won’t complain.

Not bad except rather have Stephen Hill in the 3rd.

We are still looking to develop our WR. Lee Evans might be gone, so that would leave Torrey and Boldin. Hill is a great down field threat that would fit our offense for sure.

If you are looking for a great downfield threat, I would look elsewhere

Hill has a major case of the drops. Yes, he will make the occasional spectacular grab. But until this year, he actually dropped more passes than he caught. And a lot of them were wide open drops (the North Carolina drop this year is one of the worst I have ever seen in college football). He is a developmental guy who has a lot of great physical traits, but he needs to work on what is between the ears before he can ever become a successful WR. I would think a team like the Ravens would pick up a guy more NFL-ready than a Stephen Hill.

by sportsfan4life2012 on Feb 19, 2012 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Well at the end of the 3rd more than likely you are getting someone that is a developmental player. For our offense to consistently run efficiently it requires two guys that can stretch the field and we only have one. As far as physical traits you won’t find anyone with more talent at the end of the third. He may take a little to develop, but we desperately need someone else who can stretch the field. We also have never had a WR with some size which could really help us out as well. A lot of the guys who would fit what we need and would be considered more NFL ready are already gone. Streeter would be another option, but that’s the reason I would take him. At the end of the 3rd I don’t see a problem taking a guy with all the tools and hoping you can develop the rest of the game.

I personally don’t see anyone we would trade up for. Possibly a Floyd, Adams, or Upshaw if they fell far enough, but they didn’t in this mock and even then I don’t know we would trade up for them. I think Ozzie would be more likely to trade down.

Seahawks

What a beastly draft for our D. Would have liked to see a LB picked in the first three spots, but if Upshaw is there at 1, Crick at 2, and Jones at 3, I would pick each and every one of them over most everyone you have available… except maybe Doug Martin in the third there cause that would be the steal of the draft (no way he makes it past the 45th pick of the whole draft)

Eternally looking forward to someone making a Seahawks song based off of Lil' Jon's "Shots" song named "Hawks!"

I just don't see Martin as being that special.

He is just an overall good back. But he doesn’t have break away speed, he can’t make people miss, and he has a small frame to take the beating of a pounding running back.

Two picks undo each other

You add a G/RT that will likely be looked at for LG and a TE that can’t block, you’re back to zero on run blocking.

The last time we did not take two guys from the Dline, WR, or CB in the first three rounds was in 2004 when we picked Manning, and traded away our 3rd. It’s all about positional value.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

Nice draft. 3 potential impact players.

I like it too,

But in the first, there’s no way we pass up Melvin Ingram for a WR. I don’t see hoe Ingram could fall so much in general. But I like Branch and love Iloka, so nice job.

by JetKing55 on Feb 20, 2012 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

Disagree. I think Floyd has the potential to be a dominant force and its by no means an easy choice to pass him up for Ingram. I like Ingram as much as anyone, but Floyd is not just some WR. Dude is a stud, and he’s a perfect fit for our offense.

Chiefs

For us i kind of like it but i guess i dont see guard as such a need. I think OT and NT are huge so why not trade back in the first with cincy for their 2nd then trade that 2nd and 3rd to get back into the late 1st.
1a. NT Dontari Poe
1b. OT Mike Adams
2. OG Kevin Zeitler (or Burfict in ur draft)
3. TE Ladarius Green
4. RB Isiah Pead

by BSchief on Feb 19, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Well NT isn't a huge need and Poe isn't a 2 gap NT yet.

He would need to develop into that role and we already have one developmental NT in Powe. Mike Adams goes number 13 to Arizona but you want him at the end of the first. Zeitler is more of a power guard than a ZBS guard and Decastro is a rare prospect. Green would be a good pick but I would rather get rid of McGraw with Antonio Allen.

by Jonathan Hake on Feb 19, 2012 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

I dont think the cardinals are going to take him there

if decastro gets to the cards thats who their taking. Hes more of a late 1st rounder. And even if hes not there we could still sit tight and get sanders and have another 2nd. I just dont see the reasoning behind drafting decastro with our first pick in such a deep class

by BSchief on Feb 19, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well the Cardinals absolutely need a LT and Adams is the last one with a high ceiling at LT.

And I took Decastro because he is a great prospect and because as you said we can get Sanders in the second. Also this class isn’t particularly deep in the areas we need. There are 5 good guards by my count and outside of the first round maybe 2 good tackles. The NT’s are bad this year, they are just fat defensive tackles.

by Jonathan Hake on Feb 19, 2012 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

All the more reason to draft poe

I agree its not a deep NT class but everything ive read on poe says hes a rare 3-4 nose tackle with the potential to be the best NT in the NFL. I think we all know pioli isnt gona go get a stud NT in FA and im not comfortable with Jerrell Powe. I really like powe but lets be real, hes a 6th round pick. So look at OT, NT, OG and ILB. Between richardson, powe, lilja and belcher/siler where do you need to find starters at? NT and OT. Poe is the only ligit 3-4 NT in this draft and you can find a great RT in the 2nd and a great guard in the 2nd or 3rd

by BSchief on Feb 19, 2012 11:34 PM EST up reply actions

Poe isn't a legit NT right now

He may be a legit NT 3 seasons from now but the guy is weak. He doesn’t stand players up and demand a double team. He is much better suited as a 3-4 DE to start out with. You can’t find a great RT or a great guard in this years draft in the 2nd or third. You can get developmental players at both positions.

Also the NT isn’t as important of a position now with the pass happy league. A NT maybe plays 50 % of the snaps. Also Gregg hasn’t officially retired yet and we have Gordon as a backup NT and Chapman should be available in the 4th or 5th round and he is much more experienced and ready right now to be a NT in a 2 gap system.

Ok so insert anybody

All im saying is guard is this teams 6th or 7th need so why address it with the first pick? This draft would be great for us if we signed a NT in free agency but right now its a huge need and how can you say it isnt when we were 26th in run defense last year? Lilja was not the problem on the line last year. He wasnt spectacular but its hard to be good at all when your playing next to wiegman. If you replace Richardson and wiegman and lilja is healthier then he was last year then he is already going to be tons better playing next to hudson. And somethink id like the chiefs at least try to do is see how both richardson and david mims are at right guard. Both struggle with lateral movement in the passing game but wouldnt have that problem on the inside

by BSchief on Feb 20, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

G is a huge need. OL is the biggest thing this team needs.

NT isn’t a big need for this team. If you get another run stuffing MLB you’ll be just fine. Fix the worst offensive line in the NFL before you address a need that really isn’t that big. You also need better coverage with 2 of the 3 teams in the division being legit passing teams.

As a Bills fan

I hate Kendall Wright and I don’t think he fits into Buffalo’s offense at all. If you follow our WR acquisition strategies we are basically doing what San Diego had recently – a basketball team of WR’s. 6’2 or taller, long, rangy athletic players. Wright is a small speedster (who I think is Lee Evans 2.0 and will have maybe 2 good seasons in his career) that doesn’t work.
I’m also not a huge Melvin Ingram fan, but in the second I’d take him in a heartbeat.
My redraft:
1. Dre Kirkpatrick
2. Melvin Ingram
3. Brock Osweiler, George Iloka, or Josh Norman

But i figured Wright’s speed could stretch the field and allow the other players to get open underneath.

Cardinals

I’d be okay with Adams, but I’d prefer DeCastro. Either way Oline should be the first round selection. 3rd round you have us taking Weeden. I really dont see us grabbing a QB this draft at all. We have Skelton and Kolb who are going to battle for the number one spot, and should both improve after their first full offseason with the Cards, and Richard Bartel is a servicable third QB. No real need for QB there. I’d change the pick to either Kelemete or Markelle Martin there

I gave you Adams over Decastro

Because I don’t like any LT after Adams. There are some that could grow into the LT role but Adams has a very high ceiling. Decastro is a rare talent I know and he will likely be great for a long time but having great guards doesn’t stop the edge rushers from destroying your QB.

by Jonathan Hake on Feb 19, 2012 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

LT has to be fixed this offseason. I’m really hoping Martin falls to 13, seems like he has a high football IQ, high ceiling, and is good enough right now to take the LT spot from camp.

Understandable reasoning on Adams

Don’t think the Cardinals will take him over Decastro if it means ignoring their own board if it comes to it. I think they’ll stick pretty hard to BPA. They will probably need 2 new starters at OT though so that may weight their board the other direction.

No chance they take a QB in the third. They don’t have a 2nd round pick. They’ll go into next camp with Kolb and Skelton fighting it out. Only way they don’t is if they sign Peyton Manning. They need help in several areas, OL, WR, OLB all at the top of the list. Another QB would be premature at this time.

Way too high of a price to pay for that spot we’d get the same deal from Miami or Carolina and we’d be trading for DeCastro would want a 4th as well.

I don't think it is too high of a price to pay at all.

You move up 6 spots and surrender a second rounder. Last year the chiefs moved down 6 spots from 21 – 27 and got a third. Moving from 17 to 11 will be pricier. Why move up for Decastro when you can stay at 17 and possibly select him or draft Glenn at 21?

Pats

I freaking love the draft!! i only have a problem with one pick and that is 31 overall. We have McCourty who in his rookie yr was a shutdown corner for the most part when he had S help over the top with a full offseason the Pats’ S(hopefully u r correct and we get H Smith from Notre Dame) will learn that and McCourty will be even better than he was his rookie yr. then we have Ras-I Dowling who was impressive before he got hurt coming back and Arrington who was pretty good at the #2 corner spot who can also go to the slot and be pretty darn good there and then Sterling Moore as our 4th corner. Now i am not saying we dont draft a corner at all i am all for getting one later in the draft for depth but with the 31 i would like to see a domminant Center taken. But overall i love the draft you got a rec from me!

just about every other pick seams like the wrong pick for the team.
u have mike adams going top 15?
i can understand first round, but no way is he picked 13 overall.
u have us drafting an olineman, which would be fine if we completey abandoned any of our usual trends, threw out BPA, and just went for one of he biggest reaches in your draft.
that isnt the giants style, nor is picking okine in the first.

you have ruebon randle over sanu, now i can understand the other 3 guys that people usually put ahead of sanu, because a lot of ppl arent familiar with sanu pre-combine. but their is nothing that indicates randle shoul dbe considered over sanu.

u have tannahil going to clevland, which really makes no sense to me.

Colts.

Don’t need to say anything on Luck, foregone conclusion. With the way the 1st Round developed, I can understand Fleener being slotted in at the top of the 2nd, but I think the value meets with need best.. if Mark Barron were there.

Don’t like Dwight Jones at the top of the 3rd – and it’s partly linked to the last pick quandary in that it’d be offense with all three picks. I don’t think we can really afford to do it, given our defense has been so bad.

I’d prefer if it went down Luck, Barron, Brian Quick/Brandon Boykin – but I think your picks all fit a certain need on the roster, so a fair effort.

I don't have a right to an opinion, apparently.

I agree that defense is certainly needed.

But I don’t think you can just throw luck out there without any help. The line seems to have been coming together but adding two solid receiving options including his safety blanket in college would be a good move imo. Focus picks 4-7 this year and next year’s draft on building up that defense.

Personally, I think it’s crazy to take Fleener over Sanu. Sanu might end up being one of the best receivers in the class. I’m not wild about Jones because I don’t think he’ll be anything special. Plus, he makes too many catches with his body instead of his hands.

And different isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’d be OK with this if you think Osemele can play RT and play it well. We take positional value into account much more than need and we don’t have Guard up on our list, nor do we have a pressing need for a guard either.

If you went with Osemele as a Guard, I’d take Dennard, Fleener, Allen, Miller, or Sanu before Kelechi. My redraft would be:

2) Bobby Massie

Love Claiborne. Like Lewis. Hate the Dennard pick. I know we’ve double dipped the last 2 drafts, but I am expecting us to pursue free agency this year for at least one corner. I don’t think we’re double dipping this year. I’d take Lamar Miller or maybe Mark Barron in that spot.

As others have said Decastro>Adams for the Cardinals

However Adams is not a bad pick. It’s Weeden in the 3rd that i dont like. The Cardinals offense is complex to the point that it takes at least a full season to learn. Not the best fit for a qb prospect who will be 29 years old going into his rookie season. I do think Weeden offers good value in the 3rd round but i dont see the Cardinals as a good fit.

love the broncos 1st 2 picks

not so much on Brock as the QB, i think we’ll likely take a QB, but i think they’ll want someone a bit more mobile if Tebow goes down so that the system doesn’t have to be overhauled midseason again. Someone like Russel Wilson makes more sense or going the free agency route and trying for one of Dennis Dixon, Josh Johnson, or even Vince Young.

But LOVE the first 2. But thoughts-

-I doubt that Deron Still falls to us, i think the only real chance of us landing him is if we jump up a little in the draft for him.

-I really, really like Wilson in the 2nd, but again, i don’t think he’ll fall there. He’ll perform better then any RB by far at the combine, and it’ll bump him to the top of the second imo.

-If the DT we want isn’t there with our first and the 1st round CBs are off the board i think we’ll try hard to move out of the 1st and acquire more picks since we dont have a ton this year and could really use 1 or 2 more. If they could move down 10-15 picks and do that, it’d be nice, as it’d allow them to take a CB at that spot and have it not be such a reach.

awful draft here. dont get me wrong here overall the draft looked good, but it seemed like you mailed it in with the pack. first off i know a olb is needed but i highly doubt two are needed in the first two picks. im also not convinced a cb is really needed in the third. house has looked okay so far he just got hurt last year, shields should improve with an offseason and williams will be 100% again. whats needed is a safety or front line help…starting de or depth for the interior line.

Titans

Love the Titans first two picks. Our top needs are S, OG/C and DE.
Konz at C is a great pick…
Vinny Curry at DE in second is a steal at 52…
but then it gets strange in the third…we wouldn’t need another C with Brewster….I know you listed him as a G too..but I’ve never seen him listed that way either way it wouldnt matter… taking a C moves our current guy back to guard…next pick should then be for S.
You have Markelle Martin going the very next pick….that’s our Safety pick.

Steelers

I get the draft, but I don’t love it. I’m not sure how the Steelers feel, but I am loving Dontari Poe in the first. That would allow us, IMO, to cut Casey and save 5-6 million. Cordy Glenn would fit well on the team, but I think there are more Gs to be found in later rounds than solid NTs.

Burfict in the second would be awesome, but I don’t know if the Steelers are looking for more of a “sure thing” with their second round pick. We have a lot of positions we need to fill and a player with character concerns probably isn’t high on their board. I could be wrong though, it’s a great value pick.

I still don’t think the Steelers will be looking for a RB at all in the first 4 rounds. RBs just aren’t that important and we are a passing team. Also, more RBs on our roster doesn’t mean anything unless we bolster the OL (which you partially did with Glenn).

I think if it fell this way, I’d like:
1st: Poe
2nd: Burfict
3rd: Kelemete/Brooks

Because you guys want to get back to pound the rock football. Haley will run the ball over 50% of time so depth at RB is a bonus.

ESPN took Rooney’s quote out of context and molested it into submission. Rooney said he wanted to get back to running the ball successfully. He didn’t say he wanted to ignore his franchise QB and pro bowls WRs in order to get the ball more in the hands of a 3rd round pick. I’d be shocked if the Steelers ran the ball over 50% of the time considering there were only 4 teams that did that last year. Either way, drafting a RB without OTs who can run block makes it irrelevant.

Wisenhunt runs a pass first offense and look at where that has gotten him without Haley

While Haley was in Arizona they tried to run the ball more than since he has left even though they have a worse QB now. Haley is an old school pound the ball to setup up the play action and big play kind of OC and HC.

That being said with his ego and pride I’m not sure why he was hired. The guy has serious issues if even half of the stuff that’s come out about him are true.

He ran a pass first offense

Because using Edgerrin James was a horrible idea with Warner Fitz and Boldin as your other options. And actually the Cards ran the ball more this year than in 08. they had 389 this year, 320 in 10, 365 in 09 and 340 under Haley in 08.

He was hired because he has success running a passing first Offense and a rush first offense.

Arizona also went 10-6 in 09 without Haley. The biggest loss was Warner that is why Wiz is running the ball more
