Is Mike Adams a Top-20 Pick?
After a strong week at the Senior Bowl, Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams is starting to crawl up draft boards. Adams showed incredible athleticism for a 6 foot 7, 320 pound man. The former Buckeye has long arms and quick feet, two ideal traits of an NFL left tackle.
That being said, there is a reason he was a late first round prospect before last week. His final season at Ohio State was mired with inconsistency. Many believe the game tape is more important than the pre-draft festivities. This will be a perfect case to watch to see just how valid that is.
After the jump, I'll examine whether or not Adams will be taken in the first 20 picks.
When Mike Adams steps on the field, he truly looks like an NFL left tackle. He added some bulk to his frame this season while maintaining the athleticism that made him a five-star recruit coming out of high school. At times, Adams dominated his opponents this season with his quick feet, long arms and ability to quickly get to the point of attack.
The two games in which I watched Adams most closely were the Michigan game and Ohio State's bowl game against Florida. Within the Michigan game, he had stellar plays and some complete head scratchers. There were two big concerns I had when watching Adams. First, he was beat numerous times on the same inside move. Whenever he let the defensive end inside of him and wasn't able to extend his long arms and move his feet, he lacked the nasty streak and strength to fight off the defender. I also noticed a few plays where Adams was out to lunch, so to speak. Against Michigan he was called for a holding in the end-zone, resulting in a safety. On the play, he was simply slow getting off the ball and looked really sloppy trying to get back into position. I also noticed a few plays where Adams simply stopped blocking way too early because he thought the ball had been thrown. I understand the need to avoid holding, but he looked like he thought the play was over.
In the Florida game, I saw some things I liked from Adams. He really is a powerful run blocker when he wants it. I love how quickly he gets to the point of attack and really drives defenders with his legs. But again, some of the same head scratching plays popped up. He looks genuinely confused out there sometimes.
In Adams' defense, Braxton Miller is not the easiest quarterback to block for. The freshman signal caller has no pocket presence and was escaping the pocket far too quickly on plenty of occasions. That can make life tough on the offensive line, especially the left tackle.
Overall, Adams has enough talent, athleticism and technical skills to warrant a first round pick. The value for a franchise left tackle could push him up into the top 20, and I wouldn't blame a team for taking him there. Once he is working with NFL coaching and strength training, Adams has the potential to be a very strong left tackle in the NFL. He may be a bit of a risky prospect, but upside is king in the NFL Draft, and Mike Adams has a ton of it.

Ugh. That's a reference that'll kill any kind thoughts from Colts fans.
But seriously, if he’s not mentally into things, he’ll end up being a net liability. Ugoh had some fantastic blocks for Indianapolis… and then followed them up with some incredibly boneheaded plays. It was so Boom/Bust with him: One minute, he’d wow you, then the next minute it would all be wiped away because Ugoh just plain screwed up.
If Adams is like this, then the team that gets him had better have a line coach that knows how to deal with fragile mentalities. Otherwise, he’ll end up being a bust.

SB might be relevant next year
I went to college there and never bothered to go to a game, maybe now I will. Or at least I was too drunk to remember going to any games.

Wrong. This entire 4 years at Ohio state was mired with inconsistency.

You look at tape from Matt Kalil and compare it to Mike Adams.
And you are absolutely right, Matt…its consistency. There are times when both of them look almost flawless..completely stonewalling the rusher. Kalil did it longer. He knew when to release, when and where to guide the rusher into the backfield, and has a quicker release and more strength. Adams doesn’t know when to release from the rusher, and if there’s two rushers on his side…I’ve seen him whiff a couple times because he doesn’t know who to block.

Exactly
Sometimes he looks like he just doesn’t grasp the game, which is a big concern. He doesn’t have natural instincts at the position like Kalil does.

After reading this I wonder
How different it must be to block for a guy like Barkley, who stays in the pocket unless it collapses, and Pryor who was inconsistent on where he would set up to throw? Probably a minor affect but would it account for that inconsistency Adams made in game tapes that wasn’t there when he was working out this last week?

That's probably part of it. No doubt.

its like blocking for Eli Manning vs. blocking for Tarvaris Jackson
one’s not all that athletic but has about 12 eyes. The other’s real athletic but doesn’t realize where the defense is coming from.

I am a Buckeyes supporter and saw the ups and downs he had. As a Lions fan, I would have no problem with Mike being selected #23 this year. Worth the risk, IMO
and thats it: Adams would be an upgrade to Jeff Backus in Detroit, Sam Baker in Atlanta, and probably 10 other LTs in the NFL
and many “busts” at LT, turn out fine at RT (and sometimes guard).
Adams is NOT a top 10 pick, but I would be fine with him around 18-25
top 15 only if there is a run on the top 3
He'd be the most athletic T on the Steelers

for his value i like Adams at 23 to Detroit.
And beyond just being a upgrade Backus is 33 and a free agent. It would depend on if the Staff feel they can coach him up better. And likely would be easyer to block for Stafford since he isn’t running around.
I would like to see the Lions get him at # 23......
but I don’t think it will happen. I think he will go earlier.
And I disagree that he would be an “upgrade” over Backus. Backus is about as consistent as it gets. He plays every snap, every game, of every year, going on to twelve in 2012.
2011 was an odd year for Jeff, really two separate years. The first half was brutal and the second half was outstanding. He did miss pretty much all of the preseason due to a pectoral injury. He only gave up one sack after week seven, and eliminated most of the penalties too.
Adams sounds like he is almost the anti-Backus. Let’s see what happens this offseason. If Backus is re-signed before the draft, I doubt the Lions will take a Tackle in the first round. If he is not signed, I would not be shocked if Detroit moves up for an OT they like. Adams, Martin, or Reiff.
"I’m sorry for all the people who want us to run the ball 40 times a game, but we’re going to put the ball in No. 9’s hands and he’s going to make plays for us like he did today," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Amen to that Jim!
If it means a he is taken before Jonathon Martin...
And Martin falls to the Bears at 19 (similar to how Carimi did last year) then I hope he is a top 15 tackle.

I'd take him in a second at 31 or 32

Long arms?
His arms are shorter than the 34" standard for NFL Left Tackles.

After that dominant Senior Bowl?
Hell yes. As long as he shows up at the combine and performs well its almost guaranteed.
Ive heard GMs were very impressed with his interviews, and I think he may be a guy who performs better when he realizes football is a job. I do know line play upgraded by leaps and bounds when he came back which is always a good sign, and the inconsistency issues may not be so bad onthe right side.
Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!
I voted no
But it’s close. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he was. I think he’ll be as productive in the pros as he’s been in college. Like you say he needs a good coach but don’t they all?

I personally feel
that Adams is not an NFL left tackle. I believe him to be a great right tackle, however.
