My "Mike Mayock" Mock

One of the most well respected analysts and draftniks out there, without question, is Mike Mayock. He recently had a media conference call this past week. You can find the transcript right here

I read all 21 glorious pages of it, and attempted to make a 1st round mock draft based solely upon Mayock's observations, and tried match need/drafting style with his valuations.

Please remember that this came straight from his words. I did no evaluating of prospects, just looked for where their draft range might be and the needs of teams. It took some time. Let me know what you think.

The rightmost column is a blurb from the transcript about the prospect which explains my reasoning for putting tem there. There often were times where Mayock would connect a team with a prospect directly, so that may be the case for your team.

Enjoy!

Star-divide

Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck, QB

When you throw Andrew Luck into that grouping, I think he falls from an intellect with passion for the game of football, somewhere in that kind of Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan mold. That's how much the kid loves it.

As far as ability, I don't think he's quite in the Peyton Manning mold, but I think he's close. I think he's got a little more ability than Matt Ryan did when he came out.

St. Louis Rams TRADE Cleveland Browns give up both 2012 1st Round draft picks

Robert Griffin III, QB

The other side of the coin is you're bringing up one of the most gifted kids in the last several years in this draft in Robert Griffin. Is there some down side to Robert Griffin? Yes, there is. However, you probably have the opportunity to move up and get him if you want him.

Minnesota Vikings

Matt Kalil, OT

Kalil is a wonderfully gifted left tackle. He's got great feet, long arms, and he fits the bill for the athleticism look in an all pro left tackle. What he doesn't have yet is the core strength that you're going to look for that will happen two or three years from now. And every once in a while he gets bull rushed. Every once in a while at the point of attack, he's going to struggle. But he does what the NFL demands from their left tackles, which is he ultimately will be an exceptional pass protector.

Cleveland Browns TRADE St. Louis Rams

Justin Blackmon, WR

As far as Blackmon is concerned, I think you have to look at him like Larry Fitzgerald a few years ago, which is I don't think he's going to run a great 40. I think he's going to run a 4.5, or a 4.52 somewhere in there, and I think you have to say that's okay. He's big, he's physical, he's got tremendous body control and tremendous ball skills.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Trent Richardson, RB

I believe he is, and I don't say that very often about running backs. I think the last guy where you bang the table this hard was Peterson when he came out of Oklahoma and was the seventh pick of Minnesota.

So, yeah. I think his height, width, speed, toughness, all constitutes a pretty solid pick.

Washington Redskins

Morris Claiborne, CB

(talking about top 3-5 picks) You probably could throw a corner in there also. The Claiborne kid from LSU

Jacksonville Jaguars

Kendall Wright, WR

As far as the wide receiver position is concerned, now that's kind of interesting. Blackmon's going to go early. Kendall Wright will run a sub 4.4 from Baylor. He'll probably go in the top 15 picks.

Miami Dolphins

Riley Reiff, OT

However, when you start looking at the top ends of this draft, from a talent perspective, I don't think Riley Reiff should be a Top 10 pick, but I think he might be when it's all said and done.

Carolina Panthers

Michael Brockers, DT

You start looking at, I've got Michael Brockers from LSU, the defensive tackle is a potential Top 10 pick, and I think he's a logical guy that could play even outside if you needed him to. He's a really explosive, 6'5", 300-pound defensive tackle.

I think Brockers is really logical for them right there. The question is if you don't like Brockers, to me the only concern there is he's a one-year guy.

Buffalo Bills

Courtney Upshaw, OLB

I've got Upshaw as the number one linebacker.

Kansas City Chiefs

David DeCastro, OG

I think DeCastro's pretty sure. You can plug him in and play him day one. I think Adams is a little bit iffy just because of his past. I think Jonathan Martin's a pretty solid left tackle prospect.

Seattle Seahawks

Ryan Tannehill, QB

He's a really good athlete. All you have to do is look at his tape as a wide receiver a year ago. He's a big, strong, fast kid with a really good arm.

What I don't like about him is he waits for routes to develop before he throws the football. In other words, he lacks anticipation, and because of that he throws late in the coverage and makes mistakes. Now, that's not atypical for a lot of young quarterbacks in college football, especially ones that only have a year and a half of starting under their belt.

So he hasn't started as many games as I'd like to see from a typical first round NFL quarterback. You'd typically like to see at least 25 minimum starting assignments in college. But I think he's going to be a first round guy.

Arizona Cardinals

Jonathon Martin, OT

Jonathan Martin to me, prototypical left tackle. Gifted athletically. Needs to get stronger, lot of things I said about Kalil, you could say about him. Needs to get stronger but will protect the quarterback.

Dallas Cowboys

Dre Kirkpatrick, CB

I've been a big believer that the secondary is what's kept them out of any potential Super Bowls the last eight or ten years, whether it was safety or corner, I think they need to upgrade back there.

Philadelphia Eagles

Luke Kuechly, ILB

I think he's the best inside linebacker in this draft by far. He's a natural three-year junior. He's got more production than you could imagine. He's never been hurt. He's got no significant injuries. He's clean off the field, intelligent. He's got great instincts, and he's a better athlete than people think.

New York Jets

Quinton Coples, OLB

You might have heard me say at the beginning of the call, I don't like the defensive ends in this year's draft. I'm not a Quinton Coples guy. Most people think he's a Top 10 pick.

Cincinnati Bengals

Jerel Worthy, DT

The nice thing about where they are now is I don't think they have to reach as far position wise as they used to. If they have one guy and they want to go get him, that's fine. But what I like with those two picks is you're in the middle of the first round, and you have an opportunity to say who is the best football player there? Not necessarily reach because you need a position so badly.

Now, having said that, at 15, there could be two or three explosive defensive tackles sitting there. Jerel Worthy from Michigan State. I thought he threw around the Wisconsin offensive linemen. Those Wisconsin offensive linemen can play. And I thought he dominated the front of that game.

San Diego Chargers

Michael Floyd, WR

If Michael Floyd runs well, he'll be in the top 15 or 20, if he doesn't run well, he'll probably slide a little bit. You never know where Michael Floyd could end up

Chicago Bears

Mark Barron, SS

As far as Barron the safety, I would have loved to have seen him workout. But his body of work on tape is very strong. He's the number one safety on just about everybody's charts. Everybody's hoping that he'll have an opportunity to work out prior to the draft.

Tennessee Titans

Melvin Ingram, DE

But Melvin Ingram would be the guy I would say, okay, if had you to push are there, I'd say him because I can move him all around. Defensive end, I can kick him inside on nickel sub-situations. I'd stand him up. He's a guy like Justin Tuck where you could have some fun with him.

Cincinnati Bengals

Alfonzo Dennard, CB

I think with the loss of Jonathan Joseph and what you ended up having to play with in that secondary at the end of the year, I think from my perspective, I'd love to see a corner get in there and compete from day one.

Cleveland Browns TRADE St. Louis Rams

Mike Adams, OT

Mike Adams has had some off the field issues. I spoke with his offensive line coach the other day. He really helped himself at The Senior Bowl. I think he will continue to help himself at the combine.

Detroit Lions

Janoris Jenkins, CB

-But I think what you're looking for is a left tackle. Backus is older. You have to protect your quarterback, and if you talk offense, that's where you need to start. However, what they need to do is continue to get better on defense. I would be looking at corner and linebacker, because you have to feel pretty good, especially if you can re-sign Cliff Avril about your front four.

-I think if you're talking about corners, Claiborne will probably be gone. I think Dre' Kirkpatrick from Alabama could be gone at that point. So you're looking at Janoris Jenkins from North Alabama who is one of the ultimate boom or bust guys in this draft

Pittsburgh Steelers

Kevin Zeitler, OG

I think the Steelers offensive line coach has done a phenomenal job the last come years kind of mixing and matching with all those injuries they've had.

But they've got to continue to get younger and more athletic. They've got to protect their quarterback. That is first and foremost.

Peter Konz, the center from Wisconsin is a late one to mid two. I think Zeitler from Wisconsin is also in that same range

Denver Broncos

Devon Still, DT

Devon Still has a great body, a great skill set. He helped himself this year but there is a consistency or lack of consistency factor that he's got to work on when he's talking to scouts and coaches about his ability to show up on every snap.

(Asked if he can pass rush or run stop) I think he can do both. He's a gifted kid. When you're talking about these kind of players in the first round they better be able to do both or be so exceptional at one of them that it pushes them into the first round.

Houston Texans

Mohamed Sanu, WR

Some of them were of the sick variety. Just really impressive, one handed, beautiful catches. So he's a guy I want to like and believe in, but he's not sudden. He doesn't have great acceleration, and in the NFL, everything's going to be contested. That's where you get nervous with some of those big bodied guys.

*Grade depends on combine

New England Patriots

Alshon Jeffery, WR

They're based middle of the field more than they are vertically. I think a vertical wide receiver could really help them

*Grade depends on combine

Green Bay Packers

Vinny Curry, OLB

I know he's gotten himself into that late first to mid second consideration because of what he did at The Senior Bowl. Now he's got to continue the process, run well, do well in the meetings, present yourself well, work, and that's what this kid is. People are going to like him because he works so hard.

Baltimore Ravens

Dont'a Hightower, ILB

-As far as the inside linebacker position is concerned, I really think that Luke Kuechly will be gone by the time you get there. I think a guy like Dont'a Hightower could be available in the first round, but there are positives and negatives about him. But he's a big, strong, downhill inside linebacker.

San Francisco 49ers

Reuben Randle, WR

From my perspective, Randle should go in the second half of the first round, somewhere in that 20 to 30 range. If he comes into the combine and runs 4.38 at 208 pounds, that might change some things. He might go higher. But he's extremely well thought of. He's a guy that could fit for the 49ers depending on how this process plays out.

New England Patriots

Whitney Mercilus, DE

-There are a lot of teams including the Patriots that want a track meet every week, which means you've got to rush the quarterback and defend on the back end.

-I think he's one of those borderline, late 1 to mid 2 type guys. I think where he will be helped though is that there aren't a whole lot of real strong defensive ends and outside linebackers in this draft. So that could push him up a little bit.

New York Giants

Peter Konz, OC

Peter Konz, the center from Wisconsin is a late one to mid two. I think Zeitler from Wisconsin is also in that same range, and you might be able to get a guy like Ben Jones from Georgia late in the second round.

I think, depending on how it plays out, I think there is a lot of flexibility with that interior offensive lineman draft. I think for the first three rounds, you can get a lot of quality at center or either guard.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

I see the chargers getting Mercilus or Nick Perry instead of Floyd because that is a much bigger need

by samfootball21 on Feb 20, 2012 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Mayock stated that Mercilus would be a late 1st round pick, and didn't even mention Perry.

He did say that Floyd would go in the 15ish range, so that’s why I gave him to you guys. BPA plus the fact that you might lose VJax

I find it hard that Ozzie would pass on Mercilus. While our pass rush was good last year (3rd in the league with 48 sacks) half of them came against 4 teams. So we need more consistency, particularly opposite Suggs.

Mercilus works, though the Ravens were one team that he linked specifically with a player.

He mentioned both Dont’a Hightower as well as Reuben Randle.

Hightower is a solid pick. Ozzie would draft all Alabama people if he could. Would not mind that pick at all.

Record converting DEs from the state of Illinois into OLBs: not so good

Floyd is the better player.

"Picture Me Rollin"

by Mr MaLoR on Feb 20, 2012 3:23 PM EST reply actions

I did the mock. He has Randle, Wright, Floyd, and Blackmon above Jeffrey and Sanu

Those were the only two prospects that didn’t have a 1st round grade on them. However, he said that was based on rumors of them being slow. “Big and fast is good. Big and slow is not”

So I’m assuming they do well and move up, that’s on me. On top of that, he linked San Francisco specifically with Randle.

How is Brockers a "one year guy"

he didnt even have one year. Everyone talks about his explosiveness even though he has one of the slowest first steps i’ve ever seen. He also stands straight up and has very little pass rush. I’m not saying he doesnt have potential. But i havent seen enough in him to merit a first round pick.

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

It's what Mayock says, not me. I like Brockers, I think everyone on that LSU front, from Montgomery to Mingo to Brockers

are all first rounders. Brockers has the size/speed combo, and while his explosiveness isn’t great…I don’t think its below average. He does an excellent job of getting leverage though, and looks strong.

Same ol' crap.

I stopped reading the transcript after a few pages because Mayock really doesn’t provide any more insight than I’d get right here at MTD. What a joke. Just more groupthink.

There's no way Khloe's a Kardashian. No frickin' way.

by Agent Jerry Fletcher on Feb 20, 2012 4:37 PM EST reply actions

Just to be clear...

…I wasn’t criticizing you. I appreciate what you did here.

I’m just tired of everyone regurgitating the same ol’ mocks (i.e. Luke Kuechly going to the Eagles) and no one thinking for themselves. You’d think that someone who’s supposedly as connected and skilled at talent evaluation as Mayock would have some original ideas or insight. He doesn’t. It’s the same ol’ crap.

I find it disturbing that people ridicule Russ Lande because his mock deviates from the groupthink. We should be praising him for taking a chance and using his own eyes and brain to evaluate talent and consider team needs.

That’s what I liked about the latest mock from Jagsrok. He had some new ideas in it. Although my board differed from his, I liked his independent thinking.

Then you get this guy who views any deviation from the groupthink du jour as blasphemy. But I bet he’ll happily change his tune as the groupthinkers slowly find out what NFL scouts really think of these players. And then he’ll throw around meaningless phrases like “put simply, he’s a beast” to justify his revisionism.

It's like you're dreamin' about gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly brie time, baby!.

by Agent Jerry Fletcher on Feb 22, 2012 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, I got you. Though Mayock does deviate from the norm, and I think he scouts on his own.

I guess there are some things that are more or less slam dunks. Kuechly doesn’t really have any great weaknesses from what more or less everybody sees, had tremendous production. The Eagles, well….everybody knows what kind of shape their LB corps is in.

Mayock actually started the Kendall Wright bandwagon, and now has Reuben Randle up high. He has Kevin Zeitler in the first round.

I understand completely where you are coming from, though. I think as long as you can justify why you do things the way you do, its legit. Regardless of whether its based on a popular opinion or not.

Dennard has more good tape than bad. Stock is currently pointing down, but I still think that at the end of the day, he’ll be a fringe 1st to early 2nd. During the season, he was a consensus top 15 guy before the bowl game.

In any case, this wasn’t my opinion, it was Mike Mayock’s based on his rankings. So I just put it there as an exercise. I didn’t believe that everyone would like it, but I suppose that wasn’t a point…was just trying to get a feel for how a top draft analyst would put together a mock by parsing his comments and valuations is all.

Elite Cornerbacks are always available in Free Agency.

Just like elite offensive tackles. All you have to do is wait until they are 30+ and looking for a huge contract. Sounds very familiar, who’s been trading away draft picks and over paying for over the hill talent for years now…

I would tend to agree. His stock is down because of these rumors, but right after

the season ended, most had him in the 12-15ish draft range. Gametape don’t change. If he can confirm via measurables, I saw plenty of good from him to warrant a 1st round pick.

2 points on the Lions.

First, is that Mayock stated Lions are looking for either an LT, OLB, or CB. Mike Adams was gone, so there was no other OT with a 1st round grade. Secondly, Mayock mentioned Jenkins specifically as a Lions target, cause he’s in that draft range due to his “boom or bust” nature.

I mean if he puts up a 36"+ vert and a good short shuttle time than I would be fine with it. Can’t wait to see how these pass rushers test out. If we draft a guard in the first round I am going to be unhappy unless we pull a coup in the rest of the draft.

of Johnathan Massaquoi and Bruce Irvin?

Tag Team name for Sean Lee and Bruce Carter is RUSH HOUR

by Rohpuri on Feb 21, 2012 6:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Both for me will really rely on their combine workouts.

I like what I saw on tape for both because they each have that quick step that is the most necessary trait in a pass rusher. I wish they each would have participated in the Senior Bowl to get some idea of how they compare, but I certainly am intrigued by both.

As far as range, I still think that Irvin could work his way into the first round to a team like the Packers if he kills his workout like most think he will. Massaquoi is fighting some issues of name recognition so I see him being in play probably around the mid-2nd if he puts up a good workout.

Then again, you never know. I was a huge fan of Justin Houston and Christopher Carter last year (both had great combine numbers and production) but they both fell considerably farther than I expected. Right on cue of course, Houston finished last season on a tear for KC. Carter never really got a chance, but given the fact that he was behind Harrison, Woodley, and Wordlis, I don’t think anyone can be too surprised. Either way, I think teams are worse at finding talent than a lot of people give them credit for.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Creasy729 on Feb 22, 2012 3:40 AM EST up reply actions

The problem with Carter was

he got hurt early hamstring and never was healthy. Otherwise he would have had a opportunity since both Harrison and Woodley missed a lot of time.

A couple of things

1) I checked up nfldraftscout. Tyron Smith was the #1OT and Prince was the #2 CB. However, you’re correct, at least according to nflds, Prince was the slightly better player #6 overall, while Smith was #10 best player. We don’t know how the 32 teams had the two ranked. My hunch, is the Cowboys either had the two guys even or they graded Smith slightly higher given his athleticism, his youth (he turned 21 last yr) and how he projected to play LT down the road.

2) I feel like you’re implying it was a reach to take Smith when you site your examples. I won’t call taking Tyron Smith (#10 ranked player) with the 9th pick in the first round a “reach” like the Vikings using the 12th pick in the first round on Christian Ponder (4th best QB #32 ranked player) or the Eagles taking Danny Watkins (#31 ranked player) with the 23rd pick in the first round.

3) I do agree BPA is the best approach.

4) If you’re going to tell me Pro Football Focus “sucks” at least give me an explanation. From what I know about the website, they grade players in a similar fashion to how teams grade their players internally.

fair enough

1- yea, they were both ranked high, just some had prince anywhere form 4-7
where i saw tyron from 8-15. in truth rankings dont matter, tyron is a project where prince was a play now player.

2-im more saying it was a need pick then a reach, their were certaintly several better options.

3- yea, more championship teams are built on BPA through draft and need through FA.

4- People seem to think that PFF is like this supreme overlord on judging players, but its not. not even close.
i remember reading multiple articles at BBV, after each game ed would post the PFF numbers for all the players. and usually they were completley off-base. they looked at stats instead of watching the games.
and a lot of the time, they had terrible rankings for players that ultimatley won the game. or played very well throughout the game.
it was then i realid that their just another website. they just look at stats, and they are more respectible ESPN.
PFF is no way to judge a player

Just couldn’t find a place for him. I think he had Brockers as his highest pick – top 10. He mentioned that Worthy could “fall” to 15 and possibly be a target for the Eagles….

Browns

This moving up for two 1st rounders is plain stupid. Neither the Ram or Vikes need a QB, and Cleveland already has one that would be serviceable/caretaker for another season if he doesn’t progress. That leaves washington and I would bet that Allen & Shanny have already spoken to all 3 teams, with Cleveland giving the better terms.

Dude, I just do not give a damn what all the RGIII all-in or nothing fans say or want. Holmgren & Heckert will do whats best to bring the browns back to the winning ways, and that means plenty of talent on the team. You don’t get that by shipping all of your difference making picks to a team for one player.

How well did the Herschell Walker, Ricky Williams, & Julio Jones trades work out for the teams that broke the bank to get these players? Herschell didn’t work out in Minny – though Dallas got to do a really fast rebuild and win Super Bowls in part due to the trade. The Saints really didn’t get anything out of Ricky, and the juries still out on Julio.

Cleveland trades back from #4 to #7, Jags take Blackmon, Browns trade back again to either 12, 14 or 15, take the best DE left, then take WR with the #22. The picks in the 2nd plus the extras & 3rd round are used to get LB, WR, CB, OL, RB. Don’t be fooled by Holmgrens grand fatherly demeanor.

I don't think Cleveland does that either. I put it in there because the point of the exercise

was WWMD? (What Would Mayock Do?) LOL….but trust me, I completely agree with what you are saying. I’m not a fan of trading up…period, because I don’t think you ever get equal value in return. However, if you have your heart set on a players’ skillset…well…that’s what drives those sorts of trades.

Atlanta didn't miss the 2011 picks they gave up.

Going into 2011 the biggest need for them was another WR opposite Roddy. Julio gave them a great weapon.

Look who the Browns ended up with instead, Greg Little? Please, give me Julio over him every time.

It’s hilarious that out of all your “for one player” examples, none are QBs (Walker/Williams/Jones). It shows you don’t understand how a winning NFL team is constructed.

QB is the single most important position in sports. We could have two picks in every round of every draft, but we’ll still be 4-12 every year if we don’t (drastically) improve the QB position. If you don’t have one, you have to get one. The Browns don’t have one. Now is the Perfect time to get one.

What you don’t understand is the fact that it’s a TEAM sport! You give up multiple difference making draft spots for a QB to throw to whom? The worst wide receiver corps in the entire league, not to mention half of a quality offensive line. They tried that before and ruined a damn fine QB.

A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist....

Couch would do backflips to have this line.

Of course it’s a team sport, but not every player’s role is equal. This is a QB league, the difference between good ones and bad ones is vast compared to the same about other positions.

Just look around the league. Name a successful team that built up every position but the singularly most important one (QB), and then got their QB as one of the last pieces. You can’t do it. Because literally every successful team gets the QB, and then builds around him. Every one.

I was looking at the Draft Pick Value Calculator

Cleveland doesn’t have to give up both 1st rd picks to get the deal done. All they need to do is give up #4, #37 (or next year’s 1st rd pick), their 3rd rd pick, and their fourth rd pick.

If Cleveland does that, they’d have the number 2, the 22, and the Falcons second round pick, plus their 5th, 6th, and 7th.

The Redskins have 0 chance to land RG3 as long as Cleveland is willing to move.
a) There’s a 200 point disparity between the #4 and the #6-to make up that difference, the Redskins would have to punt this entire draft, and still might not be able to match the point total, from the Cleveland package I mentioned above, unless they include multiple picks from 2013.
b) Moving down to #4 insures the Rams get either Blackmon or Kalil
c) Moving down to #6 the Rams very likely miss out on both

Explain

Im coming around on Sanu but I think the combine will most likely hurt his value as speed isnt one of his strengths. Why do you think he will preform so well?

by Mr.electric10 on Feb 22, 2012 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

speed isnt a weakness for him

its more the routes he ran than the speed he ran them at.
he barely ran a route past 5 yards, when he did. the ball was underthrown a lot of the time.
he returned punts and he broke several of them, and had several more big ones when they put him back their.
in the wildcat, he ran fo 20+ runs
speed was never a problem for him.
he just wasnt used in a way to showcase his speed.
he’s very agile, and has good ups.
he is no desean jackson, but he isnt like a TE out their either.
people still complain about jerry rice’s speed, yet he was still pretty fast.
no barry sanders fast.
but for a WR he was above average.
sanu is like that

People get caught up in speed.

There’s a difference between Track Speed and Game Speed.

Jerry Rice had game speed, but wasn’t a natural speedster, rather he was a very quick to get in and out of his cuts, with fluid movement, and knew where to be for all his routes.

Deion Sanders had something close to track speed which translated to the field because he was also very quick, fluid in his movements, as well as having great instincts for his position.
